New Win8 client cannot log on to WinServer2008 domain

I have a server running Windows Server 2008 hosting a domain with a small number of client PCs running various versions of Windows up to Windows 7. A router provides access to the internet as well as DNS and pseudo-static IP address assignment by DHCP (based
on MAC address). This setup has been working perfectly for several years and still does work on all existing PCs.
However, I have just bought a laptop running Windows 8.1 Professional (Update 1). I installed the
Windows 8 update on the server. When I first logged into the new Win8 laptop as a domain user, it took the expected long time to load the roaming profile but then gave the error:
The Group Policy Client service failed the sign-in.
The universal unique identifier (UUID) type is not supported
Despite that, everything seemed OK including a full local copy of the roaming profile, until I logged out and then tried to log back in.
If I log back in as the same domain user, the roaming profile doesn't load and I eventually see "User Profile Service: There was a problem with your roaming profile. You've been signed in with your previously saved local profile. Please see the
event log for details or contact your administrator".
If I try to log in as another domain user, I immediately see "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request" and I can't log in.
I've tried pinging between the machines and everything is OK, including DNS. The server does have a working DNS server but it is redundant since DNS is handled by the router. I've read elsewhere that DNS could be the cause but everything seems OK with DNS.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Active Directory uses DNS as its domain controller location mechanism and leverages the namespace design of DNS in the design of Active Directory domain names. As a result, DNS is positioned within the discoverability and logical structure components of
Active Directory technology components.
And if you are using the routers DNS, then your computers won't find Active Directory easily and they will take long time.
Read the following link to know more how DNS support for Active Directory works:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc759550(v=ws.10).aspx
So make sure that your client is directed to use your internal DNS server in order to let your computers function well.

  • I am running an AD Forest and when I don't have Internet connection on the entire network, some computers cannot log in on the domain

    Hello!
I run an AD Forest and when my Internet connection is not working, some of my PCs cannot sign in on the domain, while the majority can do this without any problems.
    Could you please help,
    Thanks,
    Radu

    Hi,
Usually, we have an edge device for internet connection and LAN connection, like a router. So I suppose gateway is not working properly.
For further troubleshooting, please provide your network topology. DNS, gateway settings. Test if you can ping DC when the issue occur.

  • Windows cannot log on because the domain is not available?

I usually log into my computer with my username and password and today when i attempted to log on i was denied and recieved this message.  Is there anyway to bypass this log in or anyway to get it back to normal....please help

    Some viruses cause this behaviour.
usually they change registry path to userinit.exe, winlogon.exe  and logonui.exe and change these filies.
Seems like you'll have to clean this by antivirus tools.
For now try booting in safe mode and entering Administrator account with blank password.
Also try pressing twice Ctrl+Alt+Del on logon screen and use logon name Administrator and blank password.

  • New WSUS on Server 2012 - problem with win8 clients

    Hi,
Two weeks ago we created a new Server 2012 and installed the WSUS role from scratch on it.  Its version number is:  6.2.9200.16384.  It replaced a Server 2008 WSUS server.  After some time all the win7 clients updated and reported as
they did on the old and replaced server.
However all our win8 clients refuse to update against this server.  They show correctly up in WSUS server console each with 107 needed updates day after day.  We have rebooted them and done numerous wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow and wuauclt
/detectnow /reportnow, but to no avail.
I paste in some lines from a win8 client winupdate log at the end of this message if someone can figure out what I have to do to get these clients update as they did against the old wsus server.  Thanks for help on this issue.
    regards Tor

Today I opened Control Panel / Windows Updates and first did a check for new updates (from the WSUS server).  Nothing was found and it reported Windows is Updated.   Then I clicked the link Check for updates from Microsoft via internet, and
    it found around 24 updates.
This is confirmation of the point that I made in the previous post. The updates are *NEEDED* by this system, but the updates were not *AVAILABLE* from the assigned WSUS Server. You were able to get them from Windows Update, but that does not fix your continuing
    issue with the WSUS Server.
but it still reported the original 108 Needed updates.
Exactly. As previously noted, the client is functioning perfectly. The problem is NOT with the client; the problem is with the WSUS Server. The updates that this client needed were not AVAILABLE to be downloaded from the WSUS server.
Why this is the case requires further investigation on your part, but is either because the updates are not properly approved, or the update FILES are not yet downloaded from Microsoft to the WSUS server.
It appears that the wsus server doesn't get any information back from the client despite that it displays new Last contact and Last Status report timestamps.
This conclusion is incorrect. The WSUS Server got every bit of information available from the client -- you've confirmed this by the number of updates reported as "Needed" by the Windows Update Agent to the WSUS Server.
I assumed that the log would display if the updates were downloaded or not.
It will log when the updates are actually downloaded. If there's no log entries for updates being downloaded, then they're not being downloaded. If the logfile says "Found 0 updates", then that means exactly what it says: It couldn't find any approved/available
    updates to download.
In your case it "Found 11 updates", but now it will be impossible to diagnose that fault, because you went and got them from Windows Update.
All Win8 versions are checked in the WSUS server's Product list so the updates should at least have been downloaded to the server.
This is why understanding the infrastructure is so critical. Your conclusion is invalid based on the premise given, and you may be using improper terminology which only confuses the rest of us as well.
First, selecting updates for synchronization only gets the update metadata (i.e. the detection logic) downloaded to the WSUS database.
The Second Step in this process is to Approve those updates for one or more WSUS Target Groups that contain the appropriate client systems. Following the approval of an update, the WSUS Server downloads the INSTALLATION FILE for that update.
Once the WUAgent sees an approved update and the installation file is available, then the WUAgent will download the file and schedule the update for installation.
Most of the post I read about my problem is about upgrading a 2008 WSUS server to support Win8 / Server 12 clients.  When I try to run this update on my Server 12 WSUS it refuses to run (probably because it is for Server 2008).
Yeah.. totally different issue in those posts than what you're describing here.
What should I do to try to track down the problem?
Well.... now that it's 11 days since the logfile was posted, and you've already updated that system, we'll first need to find another system exhibiting the same issue.
Then I'll need to ask a number of questions to properly understand the environment, as well as what you have or have not done.
Then, from there, we can attempt to figure out why your Windows 8 client apparently sees some updates as approved/available but is still not downloading them. We do not yet have sufficient information to even speculate on a possible cause -- there are several.

I have a new ipad and cannot log on to factime or the messages.  I have reset my apple id and my password.  Nothing works any ideas?
All facetime things are checked in the settings area too

Try turning FaceTime off and on in Settings. As for SnapChat, try reinstalling the app or perhaps waiting for the next update on the App Store. I'm not familiar with SnapChat, so that's all I can really give you for the second app.

  • My husband plugged in a password and we don't know what it is and cannot log onto the new computer.  How can I reset the password if I can't log on?

My husband was setting up the iMac he got us for Christmas.  I already have a MacBook Pro.  I do not know the sequence of events but I do know he wanted to use my iTunes account on the iMac so I provided passwords.  Now we cannot log onto the computer using any of my passwords.  He must have mistyped something.  How do we log onto the computer if we can't figure out what the password is?

If it's a new Mac I guess it's running Lion, if so, hopefully this'll help:

I have another computer that a virus may have taken over and I cannot log into it anymore.  I just downloaded Itunes on a new computer but most of my songs are not on there.  Is there a way to still access or find those songs?  Remotely or another way?  Or do I need to take it to a tech to get my files off of my hard drive?

Edit > Preferences > Store check Music under Automatic Downloads.
Open the iTunes Store from left hand column, then select Purchasedfrom the column on the right, click the Not In My Library button and select the tunes you want to download again.
That said, you seem to be under a misapprehension as to how iTunes works, or at least how it has worked in the past. It has, until recently, been up to you take care of your purchases once they have been downloaded. You had a one-time download which you were reminded to back up. With the recent change to this policy you can at least download your store purchases again, but having a personal backup of your iTunes store purchases, stuff purchased elsewhere and files ripped from your CDs will still be preferable to gathering all the stuff together again in the event of a disaster.
For a backup strategy see this User Tip.

  • New 2012 R2 domain - xp clients cannot join or print

I just migrated a 2003  domain to 2012 R2.   Things were working ok & then XP clients became AD stupid.
    Steps I took:
Added a VM 2012 R2 DC to the domain.  Server had DNS installed.  Ran dcdiag & bpa and resolved any issues.
About a week later I moved all roles over to the VM DC.
Tore down one of the NT2003 DCs (not VM) and rebuit it as a 2012 R2 DC w/DNS.  Ran dcdiag & bpa and resolved any issues.   Had problems with DNS scavenging removing some static records.  readded records & made sure the  "Delete
record when it becomes stale" was unchecked on all static records (all fwd & rev zones).
Moved all roles from the VM DC to the hardware DC.
After a week I tore down the 2nd (& last) nt2003 DC (not VM) and rebuilt it as a 2012 R2 DC w/DNS.  Ran dcdiag/bpa and fixed any issues.  Also ran it on the other DCs.
Removed the VM 2012 R2 DC from the domain (demote, remove features, remove from domain, power off, delete VM).
Everything seems to be working fine.  dcdiags look clean, event logs seem good.
    Bump forest/domain to 2012 R2 native.
Then, a few days later,  it goes bad.  I (after hours) install all accumulated updates on both DCs.  Reboot both.
Next AM a user calls.  Her thin client cannot connect to the terminal services server.  DNS has deleted its dns record, even though the delete when stale was unchecked.  :|  So I readd the static record and turn off scavenging.
    Problem solved.
Next call s from a XP user (we have XP, Win 7, and thin clients).  She cannot print.  Printers show "cannot connect".  Try various things to no avail.  Check Win 7 boxes and they're working fine & printers are connected.
Note that the XP & Win7 boxes all pull their DHCP address from the same dhcp server/scope.
Review error logs and run dcdiag.  There are several somewhat esoteric errors.  After several hours or tail chasing I decide to take a more scorched earth tack.  I demote the 2nd DC and remove AD & DNS from it. After demotion and role
removal I check AD and it still shows the DC.  I remove the now just a server from the domain.  Clean up DNS & AD removing all traces.  This takes a while as I have to run variuos scripts (tahnk you google) to ensure AD is clean.
Run dcdiag and resolve issues.  Even a detailed dcdiag comes out clean.  Replication tests show the old server is now forgotten.
Check XP boxes and they still show printers as "cannot connect".
Remove a XP PC from the domain.  Try to rejoin and I get a error.  Rename it and still get the error.  I can ping, nslookup, etc and they return the correct IP.
I've tried the simple change the join a domain in system properties.  That gives a somewht non descript error.  The network identification wizard seemed to find the domain but didn't work.  As it was trying to find the PC in AD, I went ahead
and added it via AD users& Computer console.  Run the wizard and it tells me it found the record in AD.  It then says "a domain controller for the domain [ourdomain] could not be contacted."  !?  Yet the prior screen it told
me it had found the record for the PC on the DC.
nslookup for ourdomain.local as well as dcname.ourdomain.local resolve correctly.  Tried chenging the PC to static - no change.  Rename the old win 2012 R2 dc (now just a server outside the domain), reboot, and the try to rejoin the domain.
    Works flawlessly.
BTW - We're running tcpip w/o netbios over tcpip.
So basically my XP boxes cannot use AD printers and cannot join the domain.  IDK if they're picking up gp updates (I'll check in the AM), but I suspect they're not.
Short of buying a truckload of Win 7 licenses and reloading OSs, what can I do to fix this?
Details on the XP box error (fyi - I did a record to record comparison to a Win 2008 domain's SRV records and they look identical (except, fo course, the domain& server names)) :
The domain name [ourdomain] might be a NetBIOS domain name.  If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain [ourdomain]:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
    (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.[ourdomain]
Common causes of this error include the following:
    - The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.
    - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
    [ourdomain]
    . (the root zone)

    I see the following errors:
"TCP/IP failed to establish an outgoing connection because the selected local endpoint was recently used to connect to the same remote endpoint. This error typically occurs when outgoing
connections are opened and closed at a high rate, causing all available local ports to be used and forcing TCP/IP to reuse a local port for an outgoing connection. To minimize the risk of data corruption, the TCP/IP standard requires a minimum time period
to elapse between successive connections from a given local endpoint to a given remote endpoint."

"DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer 8.8.8.8 using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID      b70 (C:\Windows\system32\dcdiag.exe)."
As you can see, it is pointing to 8.8.8.8. You need to make sure that public DNS servers are configured as forwarders and not in IP setting of your DCs. Better if you could use your ISP DNS servers as public ones instead of 8.8.8.8.
Please read this Wiki article for recommendations about IP settings: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18513.active-directory-replication-issues-basic-troubleshooting-steps-single-ad-domain-in-a-single-ad-forest.aspx

I had the replacement hard drive installed and the tech said he left the password open.  My old password does not work.  I can use the computer, but I cannot log in to add new wireless devices or to download programs.  I recently tried to download Adobe Flash player, and I needed to log in but could not. I can downloan security updated from Apple and the machine will shut down and restart, without me needing to enter a password.  I bought this computer from Apple directly in 2007.  Is this a case where I need to send it to them since they can verify that I own it, or can I get help with this online or from a local computer tech?
