New windows open behind current explorer window

Every time I open an image or a video from within explorer, photo viewer or WMP opens it behind that explorer window, and I have to click over to it - why is it not taking focus and opening the new window on top?

This may not work for everyone and I don't know what other ramifications may appear, but what I finally did was: click on Configure ObjectDock; Settings; Troubleshooting Options; under System Hooks tick Temporarily disable all special Window-Event hooking.
So far no adverse effects otherwise and my media programs open on top as they should.

  • When a window is open and I try to go to a new bookmark or a link in an existing site, the new window opens behind the old window.

    It isn't every time, and sometimes doesn't happen for a long time, then I'll go to a bookmark or toolbar link and the new window opens behind the one I was on. Example: I just opened a second window (CTRL N) and clicked on a bookmark. It opened a new window behind the one I'm on as I type this. I did the same steps again and it opened the new window in front of this one. It doesn't seem to make any difference which site I start from or go to or if I use CTRL N or let the bookmark do the opening.

    This can happen if you have a tab open in the main browsing window that uses the plugin-container process (e.g. Flash).

  • New windows opening behind current one?

    I can't seem to find a preference to change where you can have new windows open in front of the current window when you command-click a link...
    I'm ready to downgrade from what is turning into a truly annoying experience...

    I don't use tabs, they hinder my work...
    I turn tabs off.. then command click links to open in new windows.. but the new windows now open behind the current window... which is counter intuitive. the new window should open in front...
    I can't seem to find a preference to change it to the way the Safari 2 works...
    I think I just need to downgrade Safari.. there's too many irritating "features" in it that can't be turned off..

  • New Window Opening Behind Browser Window

    I have produced a page in DW3 for an artist where you click
    on a thumbnail and it opens a new window with an enlargement of
    that image. (I use the DW3 javascript behaviour to do this).
    When I test it on my browsers the windows open in front of
    the main browser window and all is hunky dory.
    When my client does the same, she claims that some of the
    windows open in front of the main browser window but some open
    behind the browser window and are obscured. She says she perceives
    a "flash" if the new window opens behind the browser window. She is
    using Firefox 2.0.9.17
    Has anyone experienced this behaviour and figured out a
    fix?

    Usually the user/browser decides where new windows/tabs will
    be opened.
    But why open a new window at all? Why not use something like
    Litebox?

  • New window opens behind, etc.

    I'm running Safari 4.0.5. Several things are happening. I can't launch Safari directly from the dock. The Safari icon on the dock open a finder window with the Safari icon, from which I can launch Safari.
    After several minutes of inactivity, the address bar will not accept input. Clicking on the bar moves the bar. I'm lucky if re-launching Safari solves the problem. Then there are the windows. When I click on a link, the new window opens behind the old one. Clicking on the window does not bring it to the front. I have to move the original window out of the way in order to enter text or click on links in the new window. Sometimes, the dock indicates Safari is running, and there is a Safari window open, but not active. Clicking in the window does not make Safari active. Sometimes Safari is active and I want to go to the Finder. Clicking on the desktop does not take me to the Finder.

    HI John,
    Move the current Safari icon off the Dock. Just click and drag the icon straight up until it goes "poof".
    Now go to your Applications folder and try launching Safari from there. If you can, then you will see a new Safari icon in the Dock. Click that then click: Options/Keep in Dock. or just Keep in Dock.
    You may need to reset Safari and empty the cache also.
    From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
    From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If you still have problems...go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
    Make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.
    If you still have problems, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

    4.
    Under Base , click
    Decimal , type 0 in the Value data
    box, and then click OK .
    Note The default decimal value for the ForegroundLockTimeout registry entry is set as

  • Window priority -- opens behind current application -- help

    Hi. I've had a mac for a few months now, but I think I've broken something.
    I have a vague recollection of changing some sort of windows compositor thing by following instructions on a site somewhere. The problem that I'm having now is that windows are opening in the wrong order in terms of priority.  Sub-windows are opening behind the window they're generated from. This is an ordering issue.  So, for example, I open a graphics image which fires up GIMP for me.  GIMP opens it, but it's behind another window.  Or I run a Python program to display graphical output (say, Matplotlib graph) and it opens behind the Eclipse window.  So I have to manually navigate to these new windows to see it.  Unfortunately, searching for "window display order" or "window compositor" or similar just doesn't seem to click with what I must have changed earlier.
    My recollection is that ther are a number of "compositors" which you can choose to do your window management.  If this is correct, then I've chosen one that isn't doing a good job. Only I can't remember how to change these, or even what I used.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    A

  • New app windows opening Under current ones

    so I have this strange issue that just suddenly started happening and it's driving me nuts. this only seems to happen when I open applications, never folders, and it does it to ALL applications, so I know it's a system problem. the issue is this: say I've opened FireFox and now decide to open System Preferences. when I click on the System Preferences icon, it appears that nothing has happened, when in fact System Preferences HAS opened, only the Sys Pref window opens UNDER the FireFox window. unless I'm going nuts I seem to remember that all apps opened their new windows on TOP of all other windows. the same thing happens if I open Mail, Word, Safari, you name it. I cannot find any logical preference that I might have changed to cause this, and am really sick of having to find new windows after I open an application. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hard to say, except something mucked up in memory, where everything running on the machine is stored and operating. You might want to review what you had done since the restart prior to it happening. If it doesn't come back, running the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests, wouldn't hurt. If you want to thoroughly check out the installed RAM, download and run Rember.

  • Firefox opens up an explorer window when I download a file

    Recently, Firefox started opening up an Explorer window every time I download a file. It's Better Explorer, actually, since I use that to replace the Microsoft version. The folder that opens is the target destination. So it creates multiple tabs, but I expect that it would just open up multiple instances of Windows Explorer if that's what I used.
    So if I download a dozen images, I get a dozen tabs opened. This doesn't happen with IE or Chrome. I do have multiple extensions installed, but I've gone through the options in Firefox and any relating to downloads and none of them seem to have anything that might cause this. I did check the Applications tab under the Firefox Options, since that seemed like a probable cause. But I don't see anything. And I don't recall changing anything recently, in any case. I can't see anything in Better Explorer that would cause this behavior. Which is borne out by this not occurring in other browsers. And I haven't changed anything it, either.
    I tried downloading something with NetVideoHunter and I get the same behavior. But it doesn't happen with DownloadThemAll!
    I've tried researching it on-line, but the queries I use are apparently too similar to the ones for other issues, because nothing that comes up is even close to my problem.
    As this is getting very annoying, any help would be greatly appreciated. Firefox remains my favorite desktop browser and I'm not prepared to give it up over this. But I'd hate to have to reinstall it, since I have it configure just the way I want it. And I'm not even sure that would fix the issue.
    Thanks

    Start Firefox in [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode safe mode] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
    * https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
    In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:
    * all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
    * default theme is used (no persona)
    * userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
    * default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
    * Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
    * hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
    * plugins are not affected
    * preferences are not affected
    Your profile folder contains a user.js file, which includes preferences that were not created by Firefox.
    so you may want to also check for a user.js file and DELETE that.

  • Why does a new tab (middle click) in a new window open in the original window?

    In FF 4 Beta 11 I open a new window, middle click a link in the new window, but the new tab opens on the original window.
    Why doesn't it open in the new window?
    Are there settings to alter this behaviour?

    In 4.0 stable this problem still occurs. I have restarted in safe mode and all new tabs (middle click or right click new tab) open in the original window.

  • Test window opens behind panels

    A lot of times with I test in CS3, the test window opens
    behind the other
    panels. I have to quit and restart to get it back to opening
    in front. Is
    this a but they are still trying to fix?
    I've checked for updates and I have the latest.

    I'm having the same issue. It seems the docked panels are
    taking display priority. Very strange. If I click on the test movie
    window title bar, it comes to the front, but as soon as I try to
    interact with the player, it snaps back behind the rest of the
    interface. The only solution is to restart Flash, which is quite
    annoying.
    Here's what I'm talking

    Any ideas, Adobe?

  • In Address book print window opened too large for window.  Unable to close

    Using Address book,   trying to print lables for a group, print window opened to large for window.... cannot cancel or close out.

    In general, in any window presented which calls for user action, if a button is highlighted (usually in blue if the OS is in charge) then pressing Return or Enter will do the same as clicking that button.
    Most of the time the highlighted button is the one which is most usable - the "Print" button in that dialog window, for example, or the "Save" button in a Save dialog window.
    The keystroke Command-. (Command-periodkey) will usually invoke a "Cancel" button if such is present in a window.

  • How can I make the UITableView go away?  The New NIB opens behind it

    The new NIB opens behind the table and the table doesn't animate away.
    I am using a TabBar Application if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!!
    - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView
    didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath
    NSInteger row = [indexPath row];
    if (row == 0)
    MoreZeroViewController *view2 = [[MoreZeroViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"MoreZeroView" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]];
    self.moreZeroViewController = view2;
    [[self navigationController] pushViewController:moreZeroViewController animated:YES];
    [self.view addSubview:view2.view];
    [view2 release];

    Have you inspected the navigationController you are attempting to push the view with in the debugger? I'm guessing that it is nil since you are using a TabBar controller. The line after the pushViewController adds the new view as a sub view - that does not change what is already there so you will continue to see your table. What you need to do is to create a UINavigationController - insert that into the hierarchy then use it to push your new view. It can be a little tricky to get the UINavigationController and UITabbrController to peacefully coexist. Try searching these forums for how to make that work - I have that topic discussed.

  • Apple Mail new messages opening behind active window

    I have been noticing that new mail messages often open behind active windows, especially Microsoft office (Word).  When I create a new message, the new message will often open and sit behind the current open document.  I have noticed this mostly when using a second display.  It also does not seem to be isolated to just Mail, but that's where I see it the most.  Has anyone else seen this?

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Opening apps/Safari windows-want them to open behind current window ?

    Ok, maybe small beer, but, when I open a Safari window from, for eg, google reader, the new window opens in front of my current Safari window, the window I am reading. This means that it covers my current window, which is annoying, to me. Similarly, when I open an application, the new app insists on coming to the front, and interrupting my work. As I said, small beer, but annoying.
    Is there a way to make all new Safari windows and new apps start 'behind' the currently active window/app?

    No. Why are you opening new windows when you don't want to act in them? Don't open them and you won't be disturbed.
