New WLAN(s)

Last year we had a glut of resources. I purchased a 5508 WLC with a (50) AP license, (12) 1042 APs, and (12) 3500 APs. We already have 6 APs in the field run by a 2106.
What I would like to do is supply wireless access to all of the laptops and iphones that are corporate, and also provide guest access.  At the same time, I would like to make the lives of the outside workers who maintain a VPN connection all day in the home office a bit easier with Office Extend.
So - I'm at a place where I don't know where to begin.  That is an excellent place to start I think
I would like to deploy in stages - replace the current infrastructure, provide guest access, and have the remote users connected in stages.  It's all about how to get started at this point.
Thanks,
    Ed

Hey Ed,
I would recommend you check out some of the Smart Business Architecture (SBA) documentation at http://www.cisco.com/go/sba/.  It is straightforward documentation with lots of screenshots and easy  to follow instructions to get you up and running with a wide range of  Cisco products.
Based on what you have asked for (LAN WiFi, Guest Access, and Office Extend) I would check out the following documents:
Enterprise LAN Deployment Guide (Wireless LAN section)
Teleworking Deployment Guide (Cisco OfficeExtend section)
Want some authentication then check out this guide:
LAN and WLAN 802.1X Deployment Guide
And since you bought some pretty sweet 3500s I would recomend that you check out this guide:
Wireless CleanAir Deployment Guide
There are some other guide with more Advanced Guest Wireless as well. If you are a smaller organization then checkout the Midsize docs for doing coresident LAN and Guest on the same controller.
Also we doing a major overhaul on our documents to be release in August so be aware that the format will change a little bit but the archtectire (as always with SBA) will stay the same.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments about SBA!

  • APs disappearing after enabling a new WLAN

    Hello,
We have a 4402 WLC running software version 4.2.207.0. There are 5 WLANs enabled and we have 13 AIR-AP1010 accesspoints connected to the WLC.
The WLC was recently upgraded from version 4.0.206.0 to provide compatibility with the newer WLCs. The upgrade went without any issues and the system was stable after the upgrade.
We are about to create a new wlan and problems start when we enable it: the system becomes unstable, accesspoints are disappearing randomly. We tested this with two different wlans to eliminate setting issues. The sympthoms were the same in both cases. If the new wlan is disabled everything returns to normal operation and the system becomes stable. All accesspoints are working fine.
I would like to ask your help if you experienced such issue or know a resolution for this.
    Thank you!

  • New WLAN in 7.2 WLC WPA gtk-randomize State?

What does the option WPA gtk-randomize State do when configuring Layer 2 Security under a new WLAN in a WLC (Code level 7.2)?
    Thanks

I know this is an inside only attack but a lot of attacks already happen from the inside. Attacks are not always to gain access to a network to use it but to steal information from other trusted users.
In our environment, a University, we feel that this inside attack is very real especially when running ethical hacking courses which probably cover such attacks. Some students will try these attacks out on the most convenient network they have available, ours. So although the user must already have access to our WLAN it doesn't mean that an attack will not happen.
We have a lot of "trusted" users, about 20,000, but to be honest I don't trust any of them.

  • New WLAN driver advised by Tempro

Tempro have advised of new driver (wlesslan-20091112152038.html ) but there is no comparable reference to help you choose which one to download.
Can anyone guide me to the correct driver to download please.

Then check device manager and there you will see which WLAN card is inside.
Go to Toshiba WLAN portal and there you will find latest driver.
Other way post exact notebook model name and we can check it for you.
BTW: if WLAN work properly you must not change preinstalled driver.

Recently i bought the LinkSys Router (Model no: WRT120N) and configured it. But it is not connecting to my TOSHIBA laptop (model no: Satellite A200-1MB) with this new router.
It is a wireless connection. I don't think its something to do with the router because the other laptops can access the signal and they can able to connect to that router.
Can anyone please help me out in fixing this?

You do not need three anten to N
I also have a Sony VAIO laptop and there is a wifi card intel 5100 N (for 300Megabit / s) and plugged the two antennas.
3 if the card has the antenna and the laptop
    is needed to 450Megabit / s
which is probably wifi intel 5300 and intel 6300 wifi
For this you need a router 450megabit
This card Advanced Intel Centrino-N 6200
which would use the Toshiba P105-S6024 also has 2 entrances to the antenna. The laptop has two antennas.
The problem lies in the bios toshiba laptop.
Bios adopt certain cards (so-called white list),
I must have deleted the bios white list, or to teach a new wifi card intel 6200
    How do I do?
I'm almost 101% sure that the card must match
You have to modify the bios

  • New WLAN install

I am looking at installing WLAN to one of our outbuildings at work. I will be putting the transmitter/receiver on building roofs but due to traffic passing the link may lose line-of-sight for short durations (5-10 seconds).
Would this adversely affect WLAN operation?

I can't agree with the two previous comments.
The vehicles passing by are made of metal. They will create reflected signals. You either need to get the antennas higher (plan on about $100 each for mounts that take a vertical pipe), or you need to go to circular polarized antennas.
Circular polarization helps overcome interference created by reflection of the original signal. I can explain why and help you find antennas.
Or, put the stuff in, try it and see if anyone complains.

  • [new] wlan-config

wlan-config is a perl script that I have been working on for a year or so off and on.
the goal is to make connecting to wireless networks painless, no matter what special things you have to do at each one.
I use it at home to connect to my openvpn vpn on an openbsd machine running pf with a wireless card.
I use it at work to connect to the wlan, then the cisco vpn, then set up the routes, connect to my home vpn and use that as the default gateway.
I use it at school to connect to the wlan and then my home vpn as the default gateway.
I will upload the file into incoming as wlan-config-3.0.1-1.src.tar.gz
There is a difference in the config file so I had to reupload my sourceforge project.  It may not be on the mirrors yet.
This package requires perl-config-general which I posted in another post and also uploaded to incoming.
The reason kdebase is a dep is because gwlan-config uses kdialog.  I am not sure if i should keep it as a req for the whole package tho, any thoughts?

I have now updated the package to be able to use static IPs.  It can also add the default gateway and set the DNS/domain options in /etc/resolv.conf.  I have done a lot of testing with wlan-config and wlan-konfig (the gui, renamed from gwlan-config).  I really need people to test it out so I can iron out the bugs!

  • Satellite P100-429 - New WLAN card doesn't work

    Hi,
    I've just upgraded my home network to draft 'N' standard and thought I'd upgrade my WiFi card on my P100-429 Laptop;
Laptop is running Vista Home Premium, and has the latest BIOS and Drivers installed.
Laptop currently has an Intel 3945ABG card fitted, which works fine. I purchased an Intel 4965AGN Card but when I fit it, the computer powers up, but wont load (lights on, fan on - nothing else)
    O.K. - So I read up on a few forums, could be a bad card, so I bought a Toshiba branded 4965AGN card - P/N G86C0002P710
Still have the same problem - the computer refuses to start up. Intel tech support say the card should work?
Obviously a compatability issue - is there anything I can do about it?
Or does anybody know what type of card I should use?
    Thanks for your help!

Im not a Satellite P100 owner but is your notebook equipped with 3 or only 2 antennas?
If your notebook does only have 2 antennas you cant upgrade it to draft N because this WiFi standard needs 3 antennas.
I think your notebook does only have 2 antennas so this would be the reason why both cards are not compatible to your notebook.

  • New WLAN

Hi I am looking for some advice.
I have an old HP G62-b17SA and I am looking to upgrade the wireless card and add an antenna so it supports both N300 and 5GHz.
I was looking at the Intel Centrino Advanced N + WiMax 6250 but I have seen it mentioned that it will not work on an HP laptop due to a `BIOS Whitelist`? Is anyone able to explain this and possibly suggest a good alternative?
    Thanks!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

When you boot up the machine, the BIOS looks at the wireless card and refuses to POST unless one of the specific wireless cards in the white list is present, if any card is installed. It even looks for usb wireless devices. I have an HP laptop that will not POST if a usb sound card is installed because it sees it as a wireless card! There is no practical workaround. There are some reckless souls who rewrite BIOS Code and you can google around and find some instructions. I would not do it myself.
The only cards you can install are those listed in the Service Manual and it has to be the HP version, not even a generic card with the same exact chipset will work. Sorry. This is done in an effort to comply with Federal Communication Commission regulations but the interpretation of those regs is subject to some disagreement, as evidenced by the fact that not all laptop makers read it the same way, but HP is not alone. Lenovo does something similar.

  • How can I apply existing WCS "WLAN Config" templates to a new WLC?

We've been running a pair of WLC 4402s managed by WCS, thus we are still on the older 7.0.235.0 (WCS) / 7.0.235.3 (WLC) release. I'm trying to add an additional WLC 4402-50 as a hot spare. I first ran the manual setup steps to give it an IP in our range, and used the WLCs web page to set our SNMP communities and such to the values used by our existing WLCs, then I added the new WLC in WCS.
At this point I could apply most of the "Controller Templates" from our existing configuration to the new unit. However, I can not get it to take our existing interfaces nor our WLAN Configurations. How do I avoid needing to recreate these from scratch on the new WLC?
We only have four dynamic interfaces, and each WLC needs its own IP address for each interface, so I did manually add these via the WLCs web page. However, now when I go to the WCS' "Configure > Contoller Templagte Launch Pad" page, then select "WLANs > WLAN Configuration", I see my usual list of WLANs, but can't figure how to push them to the new WLC.
For all of the other templates on the launch pad, I can select a template, click the "Apply to Controllers..." button, and I get a list that has my existing two and also the new controller. I can select the new controller, and apply the template, and it succeeds.
Yet if I select a specific WLAN config, and press "Apply to Controllers...", the list that appears has only my existing two WLCs, not the the new one.
In small green type at the top it says, "Controllers configured with Interface/Interface Group - 'w-restricted'  and selected RADIUS server(s), LDAP servers, ACL Name with rules and  Ingress interface are shown."
I have already manually added the interface "w-restricted" to the new controller, and have added the RADIUS servers via the template used by our other two WLCs. Not sure what to do about "LDAP servers, ACL Name with rules and  Ingress interface", as we don't have any ACL rules, nor use LDAP directly from the WLCs (as all user ID stuff is via RADIUS).
Any hints on what manual setup I should add to get the new WLC in the list for these WLAN Configs?
    Thanks,
    Steve

To be honest, if your only adding another WLC, your better off creating the interface and WLAN's manually. I don't like pushing out templates to create new WLAN's. I would use it to adjust an existing WLAN, but that would be it. To me it's safer. Also your new WLC is on the same code? If you really want to figure it out, I would manually add the interfaces first then refresh the co fog from the new WLC and then push out the WLAN SSID and see if it takes. If not, don't waste your time anymore and create it manually.

I just bought an Satellite L850-13Q and my WiFi doesen't work. Win 7 64bit and I installed the Atheros driver for this system but it tell There are no aviable connection, but my old computer find a lots of them.
I turn it on with the FN+F12 keys, and the orange led is light. What can I do?

    Hi
Did you mean the right indicator?
There are three LEDs in the front of the notebook.
The last one (the first from right) is an WLan indicator.
If this is ON, then the WLan should be enabled.
The notebooks WLan supports the 802.11 b, g and n standard.
Is your WLan router configured for b/g or n?
I think you should additionally try to configure the WLan again.
Go to control panel -> Network & Sharing center
On the left choose Manager wireless networks
Now press Add and configure the new WLan.
Ensure that you typed right SSID (wlan name), encryption and encryption password
