New WRT54GS

I upgraded from my perfectly fine WRT54G to the GS because I thought the security would be a good thing to have on my home network. It's a V. 7, and all PCs run XP. I did this yesterday.
Now none of the PCs can get on the internet - even the hardwired one - because it won't accept the password (I set up WPA security). It says more digits are needed, some specific number of digits like 13. But no warnings about this were given when I was entering passwords. What am I doing wrong, and how do I get out of this mess? My wife is getting ticked.

You have to enter the security settings exactly as you set them up in the router.  If you can not remember the settings just go back into the router and reconfigure it and write it down.  I do believe the passphrase is case sensitive.

  • Very low signal with new WRT54G (V7.2) comparing with my old BEF1W1154

I bought myself a new WRT54G router to replace my old (but good working) b-router. With the old router I have a great signal in/outdoors.
With the new g-router I experience a low signal , even in the room were I installed the router. In other rooms or outdoors I don't have a signal at all.
    Please advice

There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Swapping out a WRT54G for a new WRT54G

    Swapping out
I have purchased a new WRT54G Router (V6.0) to replace an older WRT54G Router(V2.1) due to suspected intermediate problems.
Can I just physically replace the old one with the new one and then manually re-enter my current configuration changes, like ssid, mac addresses to permit, password, etc?  Or do I need to install using the CD?

If it were me I would just slap it in and then using your (with a direct connect to one of your switch ports) browser http to the IP 198.168.1.1. Login using the defaults and set it up that way. You should get a snapshot of your old linksys setting  before you pull it off. I installed my first linksys that way and it wasn't till ver 5 that I encountered the CD. For your basic install this should be just fine. I am sure there is a lot of good stuff on the CD, but just get it up and running that is the way I would go.
Oh by the way...Wanna buy a used linksys router? Lookie here in my trunk...gotta a couple extra hubs and switches...
    It's Labor Day...just kidding...hope you had a nice weekend.

  • New WRT54G loosing wired connections

I have a new WRT54G v 8.0 router that continues to lose it's connections, both wired and wireless.  The cable modem stays connected, as I only have to reset the Linksys router to reestablish connectivity.  I am using the latest firmware from a default router configuration (I did not pull in a saved config).  I see others with the same issue.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but as the original post from my notes, I have already upgraded to the latest firmware, which did not resolve the issue. All machines lose connection, wired and wireless. I have at least 6 various media center, laptop and desktops, vista, linux, and XP that lose connection. Therefore, it is not system specific.

Download the firmware update and look at the *_ver.txt (or whatever the version file is called for your particular router) to see if the changes affect the functionality you use.

Look down the list for your model and version and you'll see the specs on your router.

  • Can't login to brand new WRT54GS

I just purchased a new WRT54GS and I installed the easylink advisor. I configured all my computers, but I have to forward a few ports. When I login, i leave the username blank and enter 'admin' into the password field and it doesn't work. Could it be because of the easylink advisor? Thanks, Tom

I'm sorry, I figured it out. Thanks anyways.

It is still making me access the control panel at 192.168.2.1, any idea why?
Also, I first create an SSID and than changed it to a different name, but the Windows Vista machine is still showing the old SSID name not the new one. Any idea why this is happening?

  • New WRT54G intermittant wireless functionality

I just got the WRT54G new yesterday and ran the setup disk and first set up my computer wired to my satellite modem. All worked well until I set up the wireless for my Dell laptop. The signal cuts on and off, the signal isn't constant enough to give me continuous internet streams which I do get when using it wired. And occasionally the wireless connection cuts off completely for a few minutes. My laptop wifi is working, I know this because the Netgear router I replaced worked well with this laptop until it died. Also have used my laptop at hotels and other wifi hotspots. A few things I have tried so far: Switched to 54 MBs only, changed to 26 digit WEP (WAP?) security. I am only about 6 feet from the router, but this thing is simply pitiful. My connection strength is excellent and usually reads 54 Mbps (even though I have it set to force 54, it occasionally reads lower). Not sure if it matters, but I am on a Hughesnet Satellite modem system. I know it isn't my ISP becuase I have tested wired, and gotten good download speeds near 1Mbps, then disconnected the network cable and connected wirelessly and immediately ran the same test and half the time it won't even finish downloading the test file, or it takes 3 to 4 times as long and returns a result about the speed of a dial up connection. Looking for the holy grail setting that I missed? Please tell me this is easy!

I would recommend turning wireless security off while you are testing your connection. It helps to cut down on the number of variables to be accounted for while you are troubleshooting. If you still see your connection dropping out and wireless security is turned off, you know that the issue wasn't related to encryption. At that point, you can turn wireless security back on. BTW, wep is pretty useless from a security standpoint. Try to always use wpa or wpa2.
Secondly, choosing channels at random may not solve your issue either. If you live in an area with dense wireless coverage, like an apartment building, you may need to find a channel that's free and away from those channels that are in heavy use. The general rule of thumb is to try to put 2 channels between your AP and the next one. For example, if you see that there are several access points using channels 6 and 9 (which there usually are -- those are the defaults for most wireless routers), picking channels 7 or 8 wouldn't make sense because you'd get bleed-over from channels 6 and 9. A better bet would be channel 3.
You may want to download a program like kismet so you can see not only the active base stations in your area, but also their signal strength and the channels in use.

  • Installed a new WRT54GS ver 7 router

I replaced my BEFW11S4 router with a WRT54GS ver 7 router recently. I use two VPN's for work, one to my employer's network and one to a customer's network.  Since installing the new router, I can access the customer's network without a problem but I get a "Port not connected" error when attempting to connect to my employer's network. Any suggestions?

When you open the VPN software or connection client, it usually gives you the brand of the VPN. Like Nortel Contivity Software, etc.

  • New WRT54G wireless router. Who's the genius that can help me?

I just purchased a WRT54G wireless router. The main reason is my son wanted to be able to use his Sony PSP online. I also have two desktop computers that will be wired thru this router. My question's are. If he is using his PSP online and the desktops are wired, can the desktops be "hacked" if they are on/off? If the router is turned off then the wireless is not working? If I access the router and disable the SSID Broadcast then the wireless portion of the network is off? What are the safest security settings to protect my network?
    Thanks.

    Dead Mans Zone....  I guess.
Using the DMZ is a very simple and risky way to forward ports. The DMZ takes an ip address of a computer on your network, and forwards all ports to that computer. This is really nice if you are having problems forwarding ports for some program. It can be a life saver if your router will not allow you to properly forward ports. It also has a huge downfall. The computer that is in the DMZ is now wide open to internet traffic. Meaning that it will catch virii, and it will be at risk of being hacked. If you put a computer into the DMZ then please install a software firewall to help protect it
Orange/White. The Cisco logo is the Router’s SecureEasySetup button. It lights up and will stay orange when the Router is powered on. The color orange indicates that the Router is not using the SecureEasySetup feature, while the color white indicates that the Router is using the SecureEasySetup feature. When the Router enters SecureEasySetup mode, the Cisco logo will turn white and start flashing. After the Router has generated the SSID and WPA-PSK (also called WPA-Personal) key, the Cisco logo will stop flashing and stay white.

  • Setup New WRT54GS. Having trouble. Getting error 322.

Trying to do the "EASY SETUP". I have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
1394 Net Adapter Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
I put setup disk in. Followed steps 1-3. got to step 4 where it says it is waiting for router after plugging it in. The power led, Wlan, 1 & internet LEDs are on and flickering. It then times out and gives me an error message of Error 322: New router or Gateway not detected. I PUT THE OLD ROUTER BACK ON. REBOOT AND IT IS OK WITH THAT ONE.

    FYI TO ALL.
While the device is 'ON', press the reset button on the back panel of the device using a pointed object and keep it held for about 60 seconds.
    - You will notice that the power light on the device would start blinking, indicating that it is being reset.
    - After 60 seconds release the reset button, then remove the power cable from the router, wait for 10 seconds and plug it back.
    - Let the power light on the device stabilize.
Step 1 : Confirmation of the physical connection. You should connect the modem >>>>>> router ( internet port )>>>>>> to main wired computer ( port 1,2,3,4).
Now switch OFF both your modem and the router.
Switch ON the modem first and wait for about 40 seconds and only then switch on router.
At the end of this step try going online from the wired computer . If you are not able to go online from the wired computer than do the step 2 :
Step 2 : Please access the setup page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter.
When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as “admin "" all in lower cases and then click on ok.
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically / DHCP “.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
    - Click on enable
    - Click on clone your PC's MAC button and then click on the Save Settings button.
Now switch OFF both your modem and the router.
Switch ON the modem first and wait for about 40 seconds and only then switch on router
I am sure after the end of this step you will be online from the wired computer.
THEY FORGOT TO ADD= REBOOT .  Did not work until I did.
Once you are online from the wired computer then do this 2 step's for wireless settings.
Now please consider the step for the wireless settings on the router page:
Step 3 : Wireless Settings on the router page .
    "Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed
    - Provide any name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box, all in lower cases without any spaces in between.
    - Set wireless channel to 11
    - And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings.
Step 4 : Wireless Security on the router page .
    1. When the router's setup page appears, please click on the "Wireless" tab.
    2. When the Wireless area appears, click on the "Wireless Security" sub tab.
    3. When the Wireless Security area appears, select WEP under "Security Mode" dropdown.
    4. Encryption should be set to 64 bits 10 hex digits.
    5. Skip the "Passphrase" box.
    6. In the WEP Key1 box, type in a phone number (just the numbers no spaces or dashes) that you can remember in the box.
    7. Make a note of these 10 numbers; this would be your wireless network's key.
    8. Leave the key 2, key 3 and key 4 boxes blank, and then click on the Save Settings button.
Please remember to save copy and paste this chat in the word pad. I am confident , if you just follow the steps you will be all set. Once the router is set up , please try to get connected from the wireless computers to your network name using the WEP KEY 1 as your Password / Network Key / Pass phrase / Security Key

  • Can't get a wireless signal on my new WRT54G

I just bought and installed my WRT54G. I can get a great connection if I connect my laptop to the modem via Ethernet cable. However, when I try and go wireless I can get either a very low-no signal at all. My Dell Wireless card works fine in my office so I know it isn't that. Help please?

1)hardwire the computer to the router's ethernet port
2)access the router using http://192.168.1.1 ... the default password is admin
3)on the web ui , click on the "wireless" tab and change the following wireless settings
    ssid - any unique name
    channel - 1 or 11
    beacon interval - 50
    Fragmentation & RTS threshold - 2304

  • New WRT54G at home, some websites not rendering???

I installed a WRT54G a couple of weeks ago and I noticed this weekend a few sites not rendering, in particular ESPN.com. When I bring the same laptop to my office, plug it into my network, no prob whatsoever.
My network is pretty much all macs (I do run Parallels on my MacBook with WinXP, and Explorer didn't work either) and the 3 machines all with the same behavior. I also had problems with Disney Channel.
Anyone have ideas of what I can look at, or have experience with this thing. I tried changing the channel, and that didn't seem to have an impact.

adjust the MTU on the setup page between 1492 and 1200.

  • Is my new WRT54G ver 5 duff?

Tried the cd set up, get to page 8 (checking your computer's settings) dialog says: "Unable to connect to the router" after only 10%, despite all cables in place. In fact I get all the way to entering a password (but no further, tried the default "admin" & dsl password) when the routers not connected! Then it is a never ending merry-go-round of password/checking computer settings. Have downloaded firmware upgrade but as I cannot access web set up page (http://192.168.1.1) just doesn't happen, even when I've disconnected the router & connected to internet in usual way. (Is this because I'm in the Philippines?) Have downloaded EasyLink Connect, dialog says: "Wired adapter disabled." Followed instructions from a thread on this forum (thanks) to ping the router & got "Destination Host Unreachable." Powered down, reset, etc but still no joy. Although all the lights work (no blinking) I really think this unit is duff. Not happy, as I bought the router in Hong Kong means I've got to buy another plane ticket to replace it if it's faulty. Have checked the web & it seems I'm not alone so hoping there is a process to correct this as I wont be telephoning the 1-800 number.

know how you feel.. it's really sad when you have a router like that... but let explain to you first what is happening... let's get to the bottom line... when you said tried pinging the router and you get a reply destination host unreachable... at that time, your router's DHCP is not replying anymore because your router is giving you an autoconfiguration IP adress... you can check that by typing in "ipconfig" [no qoutes] in the command line (same place where you pinged the oruter)... what you'll be receiving is an IP adress that starts with a 169.254.x.x . you can try fixing your router by updating the firmware... BUT?!!! let me explain first... I know how you react to this when I said, "upgrade the firmware of your router"...
you still have a chance to access the set up page of your router... try this steps:
ASSIGN A STATIC IP ADRESS ON YOUR PC:
go to your control panel [select classic view (click the option on the left side right below control panel title)]. select network connections...
under LAN or high speed internet, you will see local area connection. right click on it then select properties
under local area connection properties, look for internet protocol TCP/IP. high light it and click properties.
once on the internet protocol TCP/IP properties, set it to use the following IP adress.
    IP adress: 192.168.1.5
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
click ok and click the close button on the local area connectipn properties window (not the common "x" button when exiting out a window).
BRUTE FORCE THE CARD TO 10 Mbps half duplex mode
go to the same window (local area connection properties), once there, you will see a configure button. click it.
you will be lead to fast ethernet card 10/100 properties (depending on the type of etherenet card you have)
once there, click on the advance tab
under property, highlight link speed and duplex or media type or connection type (it varies, but these are one of those variations).
under value, select 10 Mbps/ Tx half mode/ duplex
click ok and click close on the local area connection window.
CHECK IP ADRESS AND PING THE ROUTER
To make sure everything is in place, check the IP adress.
go to command prompt (click START, go to RUN, type in cmd (for win XP only) or command.
on the command line, type in "ipconfig" [no qoutes]. make sure that you get the same IP adress you assigned to your ethernet local area connection adapter. (if not, restart the computer).
once you get it the correct IP adress already, ping the default gateway number (equivalent to the router's IP adress). once getting replies (if not push the reset button at the back of the router for 10 sec. then unpower the router for 10 sec., then repower), you can now start opening the router's set-up page by typing in the http://192.168.1.1 on the browser's (internet explorer) adress bar.
to update. click on this link: http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=557&p_created=108421...
if you can't acess the set-up page of the router, click on this link: http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3176&p_created=11310...
You should be able to configure the router already after it updating it. To check if the router is replying reverse all you've done in your computer by setting back the internet protocol TCP/IP to obtain an IP adress automatically and DNS server automatically (don't forget to click ok and close for the windows opened before opening a new one, okay?). then set back the speed and duplex mode back to auto-negotiation. then go online again and click this link: http://www.linksysfix.com/check/HomePage/index.htm?CallerID=CC
    Hope this helps...
