New Z87-GD65 USB Issues?

Trying to find out if I need to return a newly installed board to the store for an exchange. I have another PC, with this same board, that was built back in August, and it works great.
If I go into the BIOS, sometimes the USB drive is detected and sometimes not. Had to reboot 3 or 4 times to even get it to see a usb drive to load Windows 8.1.
In windows it will detect a usb flash drive about half the time. I have an ASUS N-53 USB Wireless stick that has only been detected one time. NOTE - All of the items I have plugged in work without fail, on the same board, in another PC. I thought it first it was maybe the front ports in the case (Fractal Design R4) but it has the same issue on the backside ports that are coming directly off the board.
I have reset the bios to defaults and also flashed the bios to latest. Also tried it on bios B to make sure it wasn't something specific to BIOS A. Since I was having the issues before even installing Windows, I'm going with a faulty board. Before I go through the trouble of returning the board, is their anything else I can do to check?

As a follow-up...
I went back to the store and did an exchange. The new board is working like a champ, so I assume the USB controller was bad on the original. Just got unlucky on that last one.
As I stated previously, this is my second Z87-GD65 and I really like it. I would recommend.

  • Z87-GD65 USB and ATA/ATAPI Bridge Issues

I just installed a new Z87-GD65 into a Silverstone HTPC case and I'm having weird issues with all USB 3.0 ports. This problem occurs on both a Windows 10 technical preview install and a Windows 8.1 install. Everything is updated including the BIOS and, as far as I can tell, installed properly. I used Live Update 6 to verify the integrity of the motherboard drivers and BIOS version. I also double checked the build for any potential shorts or incorrectly plugged in devices and everything seems to check out.
Basically, what seems to be happening, is the computer is constantly losing connection with the USB 3 ports and is re-"scanning" to gain connection again. This makes all the USB 3 ports useless for any media or storage device and is extremely annoying when used with a mouse and keyboard. This "re-scanning" if that is what it is, is also causing all the i/o ports to freeze for a second or two so if I let's say, double click on a folder and this "scan" occurs, it takes a few seconds for the the folder to open. I also notice that a storage device plugged into any USB 2.0 port is more sluggish than usual and there is an overall delay in all mouse/keyboard input. This is a new motherboard and a new build although I have used all this external equipment and some internal with another computer with no issues at all.
    System Specs:
PSU: 850w Coolermaster with front panel fan control
    Motherboard: MSI Z87-GD65
    CPU: Intel i5 4670k
    Video Card: MSI GTX 770
RAM: 16GB of G-Skill Sniper series memory
    Storage/Media:
    128GB Samsung SSD (OS)
2x128Gb Crucial SSD Raid 0 (Games)
1TB Western Digital black (general programs)
    2x2TB Western Digital Green (storage)
I also have a Medisonic 4-bay USB 3.0 enclosure with 3x2TB drives and one 3TB drive.
If this is a Windows issue I'll re-install Windows 7 but if this is a hardware/driver issue I'd like to know how to fix it if possible as I can't return or exchange the board.

Everything works, or is at least detected, fine in BIOS. I already messed with the hand off settings and no dice.
I got tired of dealing with it so I formatted an installed Win 7 unfortunately the problem is still there. It's much less pronounced so I can actually use the computer without the weird freezing and stuttering issues but any time I try to transfer and or unzip any large file windows will lose connection and I'll get a "USB device has Malfunctioned" error. This does not happen on my other PC, unfortunately I need the hard drive bay on this PC.

  • Z87-GD65 USB 3.0 Issue

I've owned a Z87-GD65 for about a month now, and USB 3.0 has connection issues:
I have an external usb 3.0 harddrive that will randomly disconnect and reconnect several times a day.  It also tends to disconnect when waking from hibernation or sleep mode.  The harddrive doesn't have this problem when plugged into the USB 2.0 ports.
    Troubleshooting completed:
Tested multiple usb 3.0 ports with the same result.
Tested harddrive in usb 2.0 ports with no issues.
Flashed motherboard BIOS to newest version with no change in results.
Disabled power saving mode for both the harddrive and the usb 3.0 controllers with no change in results.
Uninstalled and reinstalled latest drivers for the usb 3.0 controller with no change in results.
The intermittent nature of this problem is beyond frustrating.  What can I do?  Do I need to RMA the board?

This is a user to user forum. Admin and moderators are just simple MSI product users just like you and me. You want to call me a ? Be my guest. Due to forum rules I can't call you or the other poster what I really think after that comment.
You were rude for no reason whatsoever.  If you don't like being called a , you shouldn't act like one.  It is tragic that I have to explain this to you.
Then you escalate the situation with the promise of naughty words to both me and yet another stranger that has done absolutely nothing to provoke you?  Are you really not seeing why you were called a and then laughed at when you got defensive about it?

  • Z87-GD65 USB headset and BIOS 1.7 problems

OK...as i've stated on these forums before there is a problem with attaching USB headsets with this motherboard. There is already many posts about the problem so it "is a problem". F.R.E.Q 5 headphone will not work with the mobo, other people on these forums have also complained about razor headsets not working, as I agree with that it is a well known razor has compatibility issues I still think this is a mobo issue that MSI need to address. Logitech G35 work fines...but every other usb headset i've tried doesnt...this is on both 1.3 bios and 1.6. I've also tried other workarounds to no avail.
Any MSI guys readin this...these are the headphone i'm talking about
    http://www.cyborggaming.com/prod/freq5.htm
NOW..the BIOS issue...the new 1.7 that has been released...DONT FLASH IT....it just bricked my mate mobos...lucky the GD65 has dual bios. I tried it to see if it happened to get his freq 5 working...but the PC wouldn't post.
Any comments or development on this situations on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

    Personally I don't think it's a problem with a BIOS.
Have you tried updating all the drivers? Especially Audio..
Like I said, i've tried every workaround from bios to drivers. Been on these forums, other forums, other sources and no solution seems to work. There is nothing wrong with the headphones as they work on every other PC i've tried and those have had different mobos. Those headphones even work on my Z87 MPower MAX no problem..it is just this Z87 GD65 board. Could be just a bad apple out of the bunch...but I doubt we'll get a RMA for it just cause one sort of headphones wont work on it. Now my mate got a pair of $170 headphones sitting there he cant use.
And as the to 1.7 bios...just by going off the few posts on here i'd be pulling it asap, obviously not alot of testing has been done on it. Just lucky the board has the dual bios option.

  • Z87-GD65 Reboot Issue

I've been having a bit of a strange issue with my new board (Z87-GD65) since installing it. Anytime I perform a reboot, the computer will stayed powered on as it normally should, however the display will disconnect and not display on the monitor. This is the case even outside of Windows (as I first discovered it when rebooting before installing Windows on it at all). The computer will turn on and display video normally when turned on from being completely powered off, however when doing so from a reboot, my monitor displays a "no signal" message, and displays nothing. This continues to happen when switching between the two DVI ports on my card (even when switching them in the middle of the issue).
Again, this only happens when restarting the computer, whether from inside of Windows or not. The result is that I end up having to do a hard shut down, and turn back on the computer.
I have flashed my BIOS with the most up to date version, and I have not tried any over clocking yet, so short of the BIOS flash, all of the settings are on their defaults.
    Hardware Used:
    Z87-GD65 Board
    Intel Core i5 4590S
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
Corsair Vengeance Pro Series RAM, 2x4 GB DDR3 2400MHz
    Seagate 2GB SSHD
    Corsair GS800 800W PSU
Using On Board Audio, NIC, and USB
If it matters, or if it comes down to it being a power issue oddly enough, I'm also using an after market cooling system for my CPU.
Thanks to ANYONE who has any ideas as to what may be causing this.

I have exactly this issue, when I try and restart the screen shuts down and the pc keeps the powerbutton on..it just sort of hang with fans on.
There's no issue when it starts 'manually by clicking the startbutton'.
I updated the bios like different websites suggest, and like you did. I lean toward trying a new powersupply now since thats the only old thing left in my pc. Everything else is completely new.
This post was great inspiration on what to do to fix it.. however seeing that it didnt work for you I'm abit discouraged to be honest.
Maybe some of you have suggestions to what can be tried to fix it. What I tried :
    - (my husband) Trying different settings. I cant recall them, i'm not that technical (then returning settings in the end to default, since the only reaction I got was the computer refusing to start my win7.)
    - I have the newest driver for my 1150 board (ver. 1.20). Flashed it from an usb as the guide said.
Did you get your issue fixed?
Specs for my pc, appologies if it's lacking, typed what I understood.
    Board MSI Z87M GAMING
    VGA Geforce GTX 760
    Intel core i7 4790 CPU 3,6GHz
    Bios 1.20 AMI OEM
    HDD Samsung 120 SSD SATA600
HDD Samsung 500 SSD SATA 600
    RAM Kingston 16GB DIMM DDR3
    Windows 7 Ultimate 6.01.7601
Mine was never fixed. :/ After the last BIOS flash suggested in this forum, it won't even come on from a shut down, even with a brand new board (swapped it after I thought that update bricked it).
I was thinking the PSU, I just don't have another one to test and I know it worked fine in the old build. This whole thing has been a disaster.

  • Z87-GD65 motherboard issues NEED HELP!

I just built my first gaming PC whit the Z87-GD65 motherboard from MSI. From time, everything is installed and ready to go, expect the CPU watercooling cooler.
But, i got a few issues whit the motherboard.
First, When i installed the drivers, i get an error for installing the bios (7845v13) and WIN78_64 drivers.
Error message for 7845v13 BIOS: The version of this file is not compatible with Windows - version you are running. Refer to your computer's system information if you need an x86 (32 bit) or x64 (64 - bit) version of the program, and then contact your software publisher.
Error message for WIN78_64 Drivers: This system does not meet the minimum requirements to install the software.
I tried to run as admin, but still.
Next issue that the boot up for windows 7 is much slower when i did install the drivers. It took me like 5 seconds or more to start up as new. Now it takes around 15 - 10 seconds.
Next issue is pretty much about that i cant use my keyboard at startup to go to the bios, or change the system settings. I have tried between 3 keyboards, and still. I know that i can get access to the bios for the motherboard, but still, i really don't want to open the case every time.
    Here is my system specs:
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K Processor
GPU: EVGA Ge-Force GTX 780 3GB PhysX CUDA
    PSU: Corsair AX 760 PSU

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Pro 64BIT

I am really looking forward for help!

    Hi,
I Personaly trust more the flash tool inside BIOS. And so i havent seen those type of OS problems
Isnt that WIN78 driver for that videocard inside the CPU?
-- And you are now useing, EVGA. So it dont see it in use at the moment.
Did you format that SSD when you installed OS on it?
-- For SSDs only "Secure eraser" to wipe it clean and if must then "fast format".
    Hope this helps. Mummy
Edit: Duble check that the automatic defragmentation isnt on, on that SSD.

  • P67A-GD65 USB Issues

Okay folks, I have had much of a system change since lightning took out my AMD box.
My new system is in my sig and I have had it for about 4 months now
I have 3 USB Enclosures.  A Hornettek JAWS and a Hornettek Viper, USB 3.0 Editions.  I also have a Kingwin USB 3.0 edition.
When using the drives with this particular motherboard, I get some weird behavior from the Hornetteks.  Randomly when the system is operating, the drives will disconnect from the system and shutdown power to themselves.  To get the drives back, I have to disconnect power..... wait 10 secs.... plug them back in.  I have ensured all power management is disabled.  It does not matter if the drives are idle or being used.  I have updated my BIOS and drivers to the latest versions.  I am not overclocking anything.
I contacted Hornettek and RMA'd both boxes.  They sent me two new ones and the issue still occurs.  The Kingwin box is fine.  Does not matter if I am using USB 3.0 or 2.0 ports.  Keyboard and mouse, along with all other USB devices is fine.
Contacting MSI resulted in my sending my motherboard in for RMA.  I really really REALLY do not want to tear out this watercooling.  Any thoughts??? Suggestions??

Quote from: KidDaGoat on 08-September-11, 01:32:54
Since I can't edit my post.... where are you going with the PSU??
I have seen Corsair AX1200 and Antec Quattro 1200W with similar specs to mine.    I have had more USB devices plugged into a 700W Tagan ABS PSU without issue.
If mine isn't putting out the juice how would the similarly spec'd items be able to do so??
MSI believes it is the motherboard.  Hornettek confirmed the enclosures are fine.  I have used them on another computer.
This is the first time I have ever encountered anything like this.
As I have found out and already make the clear statement with my doubts on your PSU's claim of 1250watts by just looking at the combined power of +12v rail. How can the maximum total output of the PSU's +12v combined rail alone take up the whole 1250watts? If that is the case, being a max output of 1250watts for +3.3v, +5v & +12v will leave 0 watts for +3.3v & +5v rails already.
I hope you see the picture here and like I said, I did not want to put the PSU as the main culprit but the specs give doubts. It is always good to test out with another PSU.
If you are wondering if I'm harping on wattages or branding of PSU, I can easily prove you wrong as my old system as listed in my siggy is currently running strong for 7 years and powering 5 USB external drives every now and then. Look at the PSU I'm using and it is no big name, except it is a mid-entry level PSU from AcBel. Before this AcBel, it was powered by an Enermax 475watts which died after 4 years.

  • Z87-gd65 --USB Headet not working and cant bios

Ok, i have a z87-gd65 and my usb headset will not work at all in SLI. I take one card out, it then seems to work..sumtime, must take it in and out everytime i restart PC and hopes it works.
After some research I seem to need 1.4 or higher beta bios to solve this problem however after following your guides to the letter the board refuses to update bios. When you click the file through MFlash the system just freezes. Im worry even it 1.4 or higher bios come out of beta and are standard I will still not be able to update the bios and i'll be still in my first predicament...no usb sound working.
Please help...or should i just RMA the board??

USB stick bootable? If not, use the forum tool 'Fix My USB Key' option first. USB stick formatted FAT32? Follow the instructions in the link.

  • New black MacBook, USB issue

I have a friend (no, seriously) that just made "the switch" and moved to a black MacBook at my urging. It's brand new, but from day 1 he has been complaining that anything he plugs into one of the USB ports keeps dropping out randomly. He said he found on some website that this is just a MacBook issue and that the solution is to use the other port. Then today he said the other one intermittently started drop out too.
I say it's broken, he should send it back and get a new one... but I don't know enough about the MacBooks to tell him that it's a unique issue.
Anyone else seen anything like this?

    Hey guys.
I use Scratch Live also, and BTW its Serato.
anyway, this is quite the problem over at Scratchlive.net
Many of the users have run tests and have come to the conclusion that when the SL1 box is plugged into the "bad" port, that being the USB closest to the firewire cable, it is somehow linked to the track pad, and therefore goes into some kind of sleep mode. If you leave the trackpad alone, when the SL1 box is plugged into that port, let it sit for 20 seconds, then touch the pad you will get a drop out.
This is the case for both the MBP, and the MB.
The funny thing is...when we run Scratch Live in windows XP, using bootcamp...the problem is not there, WHAT-SO-EVER.
So this is obviously a Mac OSX issue.
The problem still persists and I've got the Developer versions of 10.4.9, and still the problem is there.
This isnt just a case for Scratch Live either, it happens with ANY audio interface that is plugged into the bad port.
I.E. Mbox, Scratch Live...anything USB audio interface related.
So hope this helps and check the link...its a big problem in this DJ community.
    lol.
    help?
any Developers out there that can write a code that prevents the track pad going into sleep mode?

Hi guys, I recently just upgraded my PC and everything is okay except my USB Headphones are not recognized on this system oO I had to reinstall windows to get the motherboard to be compatible with my setup and after updating windows and looking up the problem, I haven't found an answer.
The Headphones work 100% sure because they worked on my old mobo and my laptop that is right next to me.
Says its an unknown device and has a ? next to it. Also these headphones use the Windows USB Generic Audio Driver but for some reason its not working.
Any help would be appreciated alot

Try the latest Bios: >>Beta BIOSes<<
I will check for a newer version as well right now.
    Edit: .141 is the latest.
Might want to check for a firmware update for the usb device as well.
Edit#2: Install the ram properly and see if that changes anything. Locking this topic as it is a duplicate.

  • Z87-G45 usb issues

I'm having a heck of a time with this board and if I can't get this taken care of today I'll have to RMA it. I'm having many problems with the usb ports. After loading windows and installing the drivers off of the disc, none of my flash drives would work. I received the popular "unknown device" which I could not fix. So I re-installed windows. I tried installing the drivers from MSI's site, but after installing them one by one my keyboard and mouse randomly stop working. If I load in safe mode they do work. Also, not once has any of my flash drives been recognized.
Is there any hope for me, or is RMA the best option?

  • Z87-GD65 USB madness....

    Hello -
    Fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro...on the GD65 w/ 4770k.
Installed fine w/ optical disk everything looks good - stable etc.... With one exception!  My USB keboard and mouse work great, however if I plug in a thumb drive or iphone I get some really odd activity.  The phone will charge, but will not connect.  The thumb drives (i've tried a couple now that work in other PCs) connect and disconnect rapidly.  If i'm fast, I can catch it every now and then for a couple seconds but it disappears pretty quick.  My mobo is a C2 rev. and it came with 1.8.  I tried to flash within the BIOS, and could not get it to read any USB drive on all ports.  I tried using the MSI tool to make a bootable and didn't have any luck. (i've enabled legacy devices in BIOS, and changed the boot order and also tried F11).
I flashed successfully to 1.9 with the Live Update tool but i have no change with my USB ports.  FWIW when i'm in the BIOS and plug in a USB thumb drive I get brief freezing where the mouse becomes unresponsive... also I see a 9C (at the bottom right when booting) error when rebooting occasionally which goes away if I pull the thumb drive out.
Am I missing something?.... help a frustrated guy out?

Also i have tried multiple times to boot from the usb - to get the system to recognize the usb it has to be in a usb 3.0 port, and then restart and (with all other boot devices disabled) it says "missing operating system" I've tried this on 2 usb devices from another pc after applying the USB fix and still nothing.  Interestingly enough if i hit f11 and get the usb stick to appear and select it... it boots to windows which is crazy as I've disabled the ssd as a boot device.
I'm really at a loss here.
Also, I tried disabling the various usb functions in BIOS... no effect.

  • Z87-GD65 BIOS Issue

I am working on this motherboard trying to figure out why its not booting. Originally the BIOS update was interrupted. When I started the system up I get error code 36 for a few seconds, then F2, then the system reboots and starts the cycle over. I ran into the same issue recently on the same board. I resolved it last time by using the multi-bios to refresh the BIOS and that solved the issue. It looks like I had the same issue with it again, but this time the BIOS switch it not making any difference. Any alternate options on this subject?

I find it surprising the backup bios did not help , did you flip the switch during update process or something? again do a proper cmos clear ie remove the psu, remove the cmos battery and hold the power button for 15 sec and then the cmos jumper all while in working bios B and no extra component other than cpu and 1 stick of ram.
Yeah I gave that a shot. Still the same error code as before. I dont know what happened to this motherboard im just fixing it for a friend.
