New Zen Xtra just went d

I started charging my new Zen Xtra, when after about 3.5 hours of the initial charge the screen went blank. I tried the reset, but that didn't work. I tried to use rescue mode, but since nothing shows on the LCD I can't use it. When I connect to my computer I can see the files on the player and can also play them. But I am unable to play them with the player itself. Ay ideas? Should I consider it DOA and RMA it, or am I just missing something ?

ducky24: It sounds like the screen has failed. It happens, but isn't very common. You should try connecting to the mains adapter and pressing reset a few times, just to be sure. Are you still under warranty?

  • My brand new MacBook Air just went to a black screen. Beeps at constant short intervals. Keypad is lit. Does not respond to anything. Any ideas?

I just purchased a new MacBook Air last night from my local Apple Store. All was well until this morning when suddenly the screen went black and non-responsive. It beeps every few seconds and the keyboard is lit. The beep continues even when the cover is down. The battery is about 3/4 full. Did I get a lemon? I've only had the machine for about 16 hours and I'm a bit frustrated. Any help would be most appreciated.

Apple will take care of that,  if you're worried about private data you can't access, it's no worry,

have tried everything, updated firmware, drivers, format. I can synch files using included software and Windows MEdia Player 0, can access and delete files from player but whenever I try to play it freezes solid and need a pin "**bleep**" to reboot. Any ideas or should I just scrap this $250 albatross? Bad out of the box is not a good thing no matter what.

Please refrain from using bad language on these forums, we have people of all ages reading.
See how you get on with the reset SSR mentioned. It may also be worth formatting the player, and putting a freshly ripped album on it to see if it behaves the same. You may have some corrupt files on the player that are causing problems.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra connection prob

I already tried searcing the forums, And I didn't come across anything like this, And anything I came across that was similar I did as was suggested and it didn't help. anyways, onto the problem...:
I'm using Windows XP by the way.
I just got a new Zen Xtra a few days ago because I had to return my first one because the harddri've crashed, so I took this one home, loaded my music onto it and it was fine. Today I went to load more music onto it and my computer started lagging really badly, I use Realplayer to put my music onto the player and when I clicked into it, It would freeze as it was starting and I'd have to kill the program.
Then I tried going into My Computer to go into the Nomad explorer, Except my computer took about 5 minutes to find itself, And then it only found 'Desktop' and 'My Computer' which, 'My Computer' had nothing in it. So I went into desktop and that fixed the problem with the harddri'ves showing up, Except once I get into Nomad Explorer it says my player isn't connected.
I (physically) disconnected and reconnected my player while in Nomad Exploer but it's still a no-go.
I cleaned up the disk on my player and rebooted it, I used a different cable and tried all my USB ports. What do you suggest I do?
I really need some help and if it doesn't get fixed I'm not getting another replacement, I'll have to get a different brand.Message Edited by spring90 on 08-07-2006 04:43 PM

Ok... I think I figured it out. I finally got into the recovery mode. I let the battery sit out of the mp3 player for a while, hoping that there is a capacitor that would run out of power. I put the battery back in and got into recovery mode. I ran disk clean up. Nothing changed. I had the same problem I first started off with. So I took the battery out again for an hour. Came back, and got back into recovery mode. I reinstalled the OS. Everything seems to be working fine.
I hope that anyone having a similar problem with this mp3 player can keep this in the back of their mind if they cannot get into recovery mode due to a boot up and shut down problem.

  • Need Opinion on Purchasing Zen Xtra 60GB

Fry's Electronics is selling the 60GB Zen Xtra for $249 with an extra $40 off with a rebate. However, they unfortunately don't offer an extended warranty plan, which is why I have not purchased one over the last several months.
Wal-Mart's website offers 2- and 3-year service plans for the 60GB Zen Xtra, but they are currently out of stock and I would have to wait for it to be mailed, plus, the price is $298 plus shipping and handling, plus $30-$40 for the service plan.
Should I take the risk for the low price? The Fry's deal is today and tomorrow only.
I haven't gotten one in the first place in part of the headphone jack problems, the slight gap between tracks, and also because I have not completely tagged my entire catalog properly, and I wouldn't want to waste my warranty time tagging all those files and once I finally get that done, my warranty is over and I have problems.
    Does it seem worth it's

I've really like mine and it hasn't given me any trouble and my dad like it so much i went and bought one for him for his birthday. as far as the head phone thing it's not with the zen xtra i haven't heard anything bad with for the zen xtra just that as of now it don't work with napster to go or yahoo music to go. it does work with them you just have to pay for the tracks.
ZEN XTRA 30 is what i have and i love it. this is my first mp3 player and it's great.
    i say go for it..
I second that thought. The Xtra already comes with a 3 month/ year warrenty, and it doesn't have a headphone jack problem. It is a stable mp3 player. Go to Fry's and save the $40

  • Zen Xtra battery w

    Hallo all.
For the past few days I've been having trouble with the battery for my NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra--just general eccentric behaviour. Now, the battery is completely drained, so that the Low Battery screen comes on when the mp3 player is turned on. However, I seem to be unable to charge it. When I plg it in to the charging cable, nothing happens--or sometimes it turns on, gets to the EAX screen, and then turns off, or goes to the Low Battery screen. Whatever happens, though, I simply can't get the charging icon in the bottom left of the screen, and the player won't charge.
What can I do, other than buying a new battery? Will buying a new battery help? If it will, how do I buy one?--I can't seem to find it in the UK online shop.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like the hard disk is failing to talk to the player. You can try the advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net at your OWN RISK.
If this doesn't help, or you don't wish to try it and you are under warranty, then contact Creative Support.

  • Zen Xtra data partiti

Hello - just rec'd a shiny new Zen Xtra 60gb for xmas. Surprised to find out that the data function is pretty much unusable. Not quite sure how Creative expects us to be able to install nomad explorer on work and school computers, which are generally heavily policed.
Very disappointed, because I used that functionality of my Ipod pretty regularly and will miss it, especially with all of that free space!
So my question is - is there any way to partition the dri've so I can block off 0gb or so for Data, and it would show up as a dri've letter formatted Fat32 on PC and Mac. Then have the rest of the 50gb behave as a normal Zen Xtra music partition would? It seems like in theory it should be something that could be done. I noticed the micro can do this - confused at why the Xtra can't and wondering if it can be done manually.
    Anyone have any tips?

Supposedly, you can't have it run like that. You need to have the software installed, which I too find inconvenient. You're lucky your school will even allow you to connect devices to the machines, I can't :P.
I guess you could have the software downloaded from an FTP site and have it work that way.

  • Some "Now Playing" questions from a former Zen XTRA user

    Hello all...
I'm new to iPod, as my Creative Zen XTRA just had hard drive failure and I replaced it with a new 5.5G iPod. Anyway, in general iPod is very nice, but a couple of things that I liked about the Zen seem to be missing from the Now Playing screen on iPod.
    1 - Scrolling tag information
It seems like only the song title will scroll when the title is too big to fit on the screen. However, I really need the album title to scroll as well. The Zen did so, but I cannot find any setting to make the album title scroll on iPod.
2 - Maintaining position when connecting
For some reason, the current position is lost when syncing to a computer. Is there any way to have it remember what it was doing and have it pick back up right there? Right now I'm in the middle of a 4065 song playlist and it's really annoying that I have to try and re-find the song I left off each night. The Zen never lost its current state. Also, position within the song would be nice, but I can tolerate just the song.
Anyway, those are really the only two things that bug me about the switch. But for me, those are significant. Is there a way to fix those?
    Thank you!

    No, no.

  • Problems downloading between Nomad Zen Xtra 40GB and PC (XP S

    Help please
I've a new Zen Xtra and have installed all the software that came with it and then reinstalled as per the instructions given in another post.
I can see no sign of the drivers under the device driver although, not always, the PC pops up a message saying 'do i want to organise'. I can see my Nomad files in Nomad Explorer and Windows Explorer. i can even, sometimes, after each software reinstallation, even transfer a few, about 0 to 20, files before i get an error message telling me thw player is busy or disconnected. I have left the connection in place overnight but still no celarance.
Any ideas as I really feel like throwing the bloody thing out the window!
    Thanks

    Guys
Thanks for your responses. Sorry I haven't got back - been away a few days.
    Situation is this.
new Nomad Zen Extra and Dell 3000 running XP SP2 52mb ram 40gb dri've.
Loaded software with Nomad and unable to sync or transfer. PC could 'see' nomad and read preloaded files but when any form of transfer tried I either got 'device not connected' or, occasionally, a few files would transfer before 'hanging'. Erroe message stated'device busy or not connected'.
Since then I have followed these instructions given in another reply on this forum to the letter.
<SPAN>Here is a step by step of what I would do to try to get back to square one and get MediaSource and the Driver installed.
    <SPAN>
<SPAN>) Disable any antivirus and background programs on your system and disconnect the Jukebox from USB
<SPAN>2) Go to control panel/add remove programs and remove both Mediasource and the Jukebox Driver
    <SPAN>3) Reboot
<SPAN>4) Ensure AV and BG programs are still disabled
<SPAN>5) Search for any updated Chipset drivers for your motherboard (if you need help with this tell me your computer Mft. or your motherboard mft. and I will find out what you will need) and install them.
    <SPAN>6) Reboot
    <SPAN>7) Repeat step 5
<SPAN>8) Go to www.nomadworld.com and go to downloads/drivers and applications. Select the Jukebox Zen USB 2.0 and your version of Windows. Click get files. Download four files:
    <SPAN>Jukebox Driver version .26.02<SPAN></LI>
<SPAN>Creative MediaSource Software Update version 2.03.29<SPAN></LI>
    <SPAN>NOMAD JukeBox Type 2 Version .0.03 (English) Web Release<SPAN></LI>
    <SPAN>Creative NOMAD Explorer (Version 3.0.0)<SPAN></LI>
<SPAN>9) While these are downloading, go into rescue mode on the player and run a cleanup. A reload OS will hopefully not be needed.
<SPAN>0) Install the files in the above order. You will plug the Jukebox Zen in at the end of the driver install to complete the install. Leave it connected all the way through the remaining ste
    ps.
Disconnect after the last file is installed.
<SPAN>0) Reboot, reconnect the player and test.
    <SPAN>Jeremy"
<SPAN>So I think of all the up-to-date firmware etc...
<SPAN>I've also loaded and installed WMP 0 - which can also see the Nomad and has transferred a few files before hanging as above...
<SPAN>I can also see the driver in my device drivers under usb controllers. the driver listed is Creative Labs .26.2.0
<SPAN>I have managed to transfer my tracks (3500+) to the Nomad by burning as MP3 cd's and loading through my works laptop (Win2000). I used the Creative Media Source on the original software which came with the Nomad to do this. This is not a great solution as my company aren't thrilled about such use of their lappies and it only has a 0gb hd and, therefore, doesn't / can't hold my music library.
<SPAN>I really want to get it working properly on my main PC so I can get the max from the Nomad.
    <SPAN>Any ideas?

  • Zen XTRA dead or not? Zombie state or gone forev

I bought thru e*ay a fairly new Zen Xtra. The charger works, the battery is fine. But the turn-on switch produces no display at all. I hear nothing... I can't tell what's wrong, whether it's the hard dri've, the switch, or what...
Any ideas? And has anyone done the hdd switch and gotten this solved? My fear is that with no display, it may be something way more fundamental...

Should have mentioned in my orig. post the obvious: I don't know if it's under warranty and I bought the Xtra "as-is."
If a reset with power connected does nothing, then what? Gi've it up for lost?

  • Zen Xtra Backlighting Brightness Prob

The backlighting on my new Zen Xtra seems to be woefully dark. I have changed the contrast again and again, but it does nothing to brighten up the screen. It does adjust the contrast between the background and the text, but the lighting itself is very dim. I have gone page by page in the cd manual and there is nothing that addresses backlighting brightness.
Is there something I am missing? Or is the screen very dark for everyone?

Well, it's not as bright as an iPod's screen, for example.
I searched around for some pics about what it should look like (since I don't have access to a digital cam to photograph mine)
http://www.dui'verman.nl/upload/images/28_ZenXtraAndTravelSound_0lowres.jpg Looks about right to me<

  • Zen Xtra start up probl

I START UP MY 30 GIG ZEN XTRA AND I GET AS FAR AS THE EAX SCREEN AND THEN IT STOPS. NO PLAYLIST WINDOW, NOTHING. I HEAR THE HARDDRIVE SPINNING THOUGH, I HAVE HAD THIS THING FOR A YEAR NOW. COULD IT BE THAT I NEED A NEW BATTERY? HELP.

I am having this same issue but I have some questions. This is a brand new zen xtra and it stops at the eax screen. I have read a few articles and attmpted to try the suggestions. I can get into the rescue and I start a disk cleanup, it shows the "scan disk" (LOL) as if its doing something but it appears not to be doing anything I am also not hearing the usual sounds of a hard dri've working while its sitting there...does this usually take a long time? I have also downloaded the latest firmware but am unsure how to go about updating with this lockup issue. I installed the drivers and windows 2000 is not picking up the device and also when i try and run the firmware update it of course says its not connected. I will be attempting to try and get my other work computer to recognize it this afternoon (XP). I really don't want to have to return this thing so any other ideas for me? How does the format function work on this device and how would i reload the OS?
    Thanks for you time,

  • Getting Zen Xtra to work with new compu

I just bought a new Dell 8400 with a Sound Blaster Audigy card. The computer has Creative Media Source version 2.03.29 installed. I plugged my Zen Xtra into the USB port, and I guesss I just expected it to work (but obviously it doesn't). how do I get the new computer to recognize my mp3 player. I can't locate any of the discs that came with the mp3 player. Are there drivers I can download? I looked through the download section, but I really wasn't sure what I was looking for. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    For the Zen Xtra right?
I went to and chose MP3 Players > Zen (Hard Disk Dri've/MicroDri've) > Zen Xtra, then <EM>Get Files</EM>.
The driver was listed there, but you want to download:
    Jukebox Driver version .26.02</LI>
Creative MediaSource Software Update version 2.03.29</LI>
NOMAD JukeBox Type 2 Version .0.03 (English) Web Release</LI>
Creative NOMAD Explorer (Version 3.0.0) (if you want to use Nomad Explorer)</LI>
    You then want to:
    install the driver</LI>
turn the Xtra on and connect to the PC and let the driver install (should be automatic)</LI>
with the Zen still connected to the PC install MediaSource (it needs a Creative product present to validate the install)</LI>
install the Nomad Jukebox Type 2 version (this is required to get MediaSoruce to work with the player)</LI>
If you want, install Nomad Explorer</LI>
That's all you should need to do.

  • I can't get my Zen Xtra to work on my new comput

Hello. For years now, my Creative Zen Xtra has been working perfectly on my old (and I do mean old, Windows 98 old) computer. However, I recently bought a new computer with Windows Vista, and I just can't get it to work on there. I've installed all the software on the CD I got with the player, but when I open the player, it says "Not connected". All my other USB devices are working, and when I connect my MP3 player, it switches itself on, so I don't think there's anything wrong with my USB ports or the cable, and I can only assume there's something wrong with the software. I already tried looking for a driver update in the Downloads section of this site, but couldn't find anything for Vista.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how to solve it's If so, I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

Do you have any security software installed, blocking these ports? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125

  • Just repaired Nomad ZEN Xtra in rescue m

Need some help here........Got my Zen back a month ago from the repair center because it wouldn't play. Took about a month. Paid $78+ to have it fixed. I guess they put a new hard dri've in it as I only had a 40GB and the one they returned to me says its a 60GB.Well, as my Zen was playing yesterday it just stopped and went into Rescue mode. I tried the reset procedures as described on the support website. It went to the rescue screen. Tried the clean up procedure. Nothing, it just went back to the highlighted clean up selection. Does this sound like my hard dri've is toast again? This unit is only 2 years old. Never been dropped or abused. Rather irritating after a repair less than a month ago it's not working again. Any ideas would help. ThanksGreg

Oh yeah I forgot to mention my Zen operated just great and never had a problem until I downloaded from the Creative Support site an UPGRADE for my player. It immediately went into this Rescue Mode. The Creative repair center said I needed to send in the Player for anlysis and repair. The rest is in my previous email....DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE UPGRADES FOR YOUR SYSTEM. I think
