Newb here witha few questions.

Not a newb to macs but to my powerbook. I had a Powermac G3 all in one beige with 384 MEGS of ram, 9.2 OS and a factory speed of 233 MGHZ clocked to 280 and 4 GIG HD and CD drive. It since died a few years ago when the power unit/supply...i am guessing, crapped out. I now just purchased a Lombard 400 MGHZ powerbook G3 DVD/CD, with 64 MEGS of ram and a 6 gig HD. There is some things i need to get for it...ram, batteries and a bigger hardrive but i am happy with it. I am running 10.2 on it right now and REALLY need more memory. I am about to install 9.2 on it as well. My question is the PC slot on the left side, what can go there? I know the 333MGHZ Lombards use a DVD decoder there but mine does not since its built in. What sorta things can go there? Also i have a 10.3 CD here...should i install it as wellor will it make it run slower since i only have the 64 MEGS right now.

Why did the scratch thread below get locked?

Thanks. Just curious. Although I somewhat disagree. I realize he is complaining about the scratching issue. But, I think his thread had some support related topics in it as well. Such as how to LEGITIMATELY keep scratches from happening. I too have issues with scratching and yes, I have a cover and have had one since the day I bought it but it still has scratches.

  • Hi...Newby here with a question

Hey everybody, i just signed up here with a quick question.
I've been using Itunes for about a year now and havent been able to figure out if its possible to display the lyrics of a song while it plays. I know you can put the lyrics on by clicking on a song and "get[ing] Info" but is there any way that, while a song is playing, the lyrics can be displayed on a side screen? For example, in the small display where the album artwork is displayed, could it show lyrics instead?
    Thanks for the help

One thing you can do is install the Yahoo Widget Engine, then install a widget like iTunes Companion or Sing that iTune!.

  • Newbie here, with button action script issue

I have just started to scrach the surface with actionscript
and I have attempted to assign it to buttons. Much to my supprise,
it worked, sort of... All my buttons require a double click the
first time you click on them. I was able to put
    this together, by
using the following action script for all my buttons:
    on (release) {
    ybutton.onRelease = function() {
    gotoAndStop(28);
So I have 2 questions. What actionscript will give me the
single click that I am looking for? Also, is there any shortcut to
making a broad change? In other words, will have to switch out the
code for every button on 37 frames?
    Thank you

1: // You needed two clicks because you have 2 onRelease.
    on (release) {
    gotoAndStop(28);
2: Yes, it'll go fast I would copy the above and paste where
needed then just change the frame #.

  • Newbie here with a host of problems

Just got my I ipod touch and besides having to re-register every time I log on, I am also having problems with my ipod being seen as a device in itunes. Somehow I managed to download one song from itunes and play it on my ipod. When I went back on itunes to purchase another song, not only did it not recognize the ipod again, but I could not sync the new song and then the first song that I did sync was no longer on my ipod. What happened to the song that I downloaded? I am so disgusted. I can't get anything accomplished. Please help!

My advice would be to make sure you have the latest software. When you connect your IPT (iPod Touch) to your computer, iTunes should show your IPT. The latest software is 1.1.3. If you have 1.1.1, update to 1.1.2. and then to 1.1.3. You can find out which version you have in one of two ways: 1) On your IPT (not hooked to the computer) at the home screen, select Settings->General->About. You should have Version 1.1.3 (4A93); 2) in iTunes, Click on the IPT and you'll see the Summary tab. It will let you know if you have an update available. Now if you don't have the updated software, click Check For Update. If the update doesn't help, click the Restore button on iTunes. It'll reset your iPod and will sync everything back on.
Don't feel like an idiot: it's new so you have to learn it. We're here to help!

  • Newbie here with automatic update problem.

    Hi everyone,
I just purchased a palm centro for sprint and so far I really like it. The problem is every morning when I get up there is this message...
Sorry, your secheduled automatic updte did not complete successfully because a connection could not be establised--32485
Can anyone help me with this? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
    Leila
    Post relates to: Centro (Sprint)

Hello Leila and welcome to the Palm forums.
This is likely an error message from the My Centro application of the Palm Software (store) application.  The problem is that one or both of these applications is waking up while you're asleep and trying to check for content updates (not really needed in my opinion) and the Internet connection on your phone is currently closed.
I don't use either of these applications on my Treo 755p (My Centro is called My Treo).  If you launch these apps on your Centro, and then press the Menu button on your keyboard you should be be able to access the menu item that controls software updates and turn off the updates.
Other applications on your Centro may also be looking to check for updates.  I would also check Pocket Tunes (pTunes) to see if it is looking for updates also.
    Hope that helps,

  • First post, newb here.. simple question..

I seen that 2009.8 is more "automated".. and the defaults (as i've read) will most likely work..
after it's all done and have i have a blank screen with the prompt and i type root and hit enter and enter again (no password yet)(unless i make one during the process of install)
if i type pacman -S kde (that should install all of KDE and X)?
i read there's lil need to set up X any more?
did i read all this right?
    thanks..
base installation of 2009.8 is easy.. its the next step where the wiki kinda stops..(at least I cant seem to figure what step is next)
i'm really after kde 4.3.1 (im using gnome now in ubuntu)  but all i've read , it seems that archs ' 64bit kde is faster, more stable then kubuntu/ppa version of kde 4.3.x
and will mp3, avi, flash etc work out of the box? or do i have to search the forums to figure all of this out?
any help would be most appreciated..

I to had trouble the first time I attempted to install Arch... I gave up for a week and then decided to try again... and the second time everything just worked... My only advice is that likely your missing a step in the Begginers/Installation guide... if you have another computer that can load up the guides and continually reference them while you are installing I am sure you will be able to successfully install arch... From your initial post it seems like you didn't even bother reading large portions of the guide. Arch isn't mean to be a GUI do-it-all install... it is meant to be customizable to the individual users needs... The ArchWiki is the best resource to date that I have found... it is very well put together... 90% of the all the problems I have ran into are quickly solved by doing a quick google search "problemX archwiki" and if for whatever reason their happens to not have an entry on it... "problemX archlinux" seems to pop up relevant forum posts. I really do not see how their could be a simpler guide while still retaining the ability to customize the distro to each individuals liking and personally I do not find it that difficult or convoluted... it separated into easy to follow steps... albeit I will grant you a semi-long process (once you have done it once... it doesn't seem so long the second or third time you do it). By the time you do get installed you will have learned more about your system and that knowledge will help you in being able to track down problems as they arise or at least be able to post up the necessary information that will help fellow forum users in diagnosing/solving your issues. That being said... if you enjoy your previous distro and it does everything you like... then stick with what works... but just realize you are missing the brilliance in simplicity that is Arch ; )

  • Please help : here a few questions about BLOBs

    I'm using Forms6i patch11. I've got a web application with a block based on a table like this :
    TMP_STORED_FILE(file_name varchar2(256),
    file blob)
The application allow the user to select a picture on the hard disk, and to store it in the database.
I use the read_image_file to show the picture in an Image item (based on the file column of the table).
When the user perform a commit, I'm not sure that the file is correctly stored in the table... what do
    you think ?
Now, I want to show in the image item the picture stored in the table when a record is queried. I saw many java sample code supposed to do that, but do I really have to use java ??
I saw that if I want to show the picture, I have first to re-create the file, and then to use read_image_file again. So : why should I store the pictures ? I mean : I wanted to store the pictures so that I can control
the access to them. I wanted to delete the files after they have been stored. But if I have to recreate them,
what about keep the files on the server and never store anything but the pathname and the filename ???
At least, I could control the security at the directory level, what do you think ?

Yes, thanks. I tried to commit the pictures yesterday, and I thought it was ok, but in fact nothing was
inserted in my blob. I thought it was ok, because I found in the metalink the following :
fix: To read the image stored in BLOB column of some database table into an image item in forms block,
the item should have property 'Database Item'= No Image items can only be populated in two ways:
    1. with read_image_file built-in In this case file needs to be read from a local filesystem (or from the middle- tier for webforms)
    Or
    2. directly from database table by fetching In this case the image item must be based on database column of BLOB or LONG RAW
datatype, and cannot be a control item. There is no interface how to manipulate value of an image item programmatically.
    Possible solutions are:
    1. get file from BLOB column in database into local file system as some temporary file, then use read_image_file.
<Note:66312.1> describes the steps for BFILEs, it needs to be modified for BLOB columns.
    Or
2a) create temporary table with BLOB column, copy image from BLOB storage table into it using stored procedure with DBMS_LOB package.
<Note:61737.1> describes using DBMS_LOB package in detail. In forms create a separate block based on this temporary table,
only with image item visible, and display just copied image
    Or
2b) have separate block based on BLOB storage table, only the image item visible, and always restrict where clause to select only the one
particular image. The second way is probably easier to implement.
Case 2a could be slower than the first one or 2b.
Maybe I didn't understand it correctly (my english is not so good after all).
Anyway, I finally succeed in inserting my pics.
    Thanks again !!

  • Noob Here With a question

I'm new here so I thought I would say HI to all.  I'm a self taught computer guy and late to the newer AMD cpu's.
    I did a little searching and ordered a MSI K8N Neo2-F.
I was wondering what a good/average CPU would be for this. I still need to study up on these but I was looking at a 3700+ 1mb L2 Cache.
Also What can I slavage from the stuff below. It's all 6mo. old except the memory and video card which is brand new.

You should be able to use everything. Obviously the chip and cooler will stay the the NF-7
As far as chip goes, the 3700 San Diego chip should suit you fine for what you requested as a good average CPU.

  • A few questions from possible Apple TV newbie

    Hi all,
I am interested in buying Apple TV and have read the product description on the Store section.I have a few question as I don't quite get how it works.
I watch digital/freeview TV currently on my iMac using a USB eye-TV thingy. Works Great!
I share WiFi connection with my neighbour to get onto the internet. Good speeds, good signal and works great.
    I don't own a 'regular' TV Set.
Would adding Apple TV work here? Can I connect this and make it work or am I missing the point completely?
Any pointers to user guides, previous posts or tips would be great.
    Thanks y'all.

think of TV as a way to get your iTunes library (plus some internet related features such as youtube and movie rentals from the iTunes store) to a HDTV.
if you don't own a HDTV, TV is not for you IMHO.

  • A few questions from a newbie!

    Hello!
So, I am VERY new to using Mac productions and I just got my Macbook recently.
I have a few questions that may seem to have a very simple and obvious answer but like I said, this is all new to me...
    1. Do I have to install a anti-virus/spam program? If so, which one?
    2. Time Machine- this is the program to back up files right? when I try to set it up it doesn't give me any options for a back up disk.
Anything else that I should defiantly know please let me know!
    Thanks so much!
    Alanna.

Not unless you want to. I have had Macs for 2 years and never had a problem. This is a good one if you decide to install one. ClamXav
    2. Time Machine- this is the program to back up files right? when I try to set it up it doesn't give me any options for a back up disk.
You need an external hard drive attached to use with Time Machine. This explains it.

This is info that will help you get the best life from your battery.
It is OK to leave your battery hooked to the charger most of the time. The only time I unhook mine from the charger is when I calibrate or for a few minutes to use in another room. Have you calibrated your battery yet? You should calibrate every two months or so to keep the battery fully functioning. If you use your MacBook infrequently, it’s best to re-calibrate the battery at least once a month.
It is best not to use your battery unless you need to. Some people have hurt their batteries by charging then discharging every time they use the MacBook. This will age a battery very fast and cause you to buy a battery sooner than you should have too. Don't discharge the battery just because you used it. Li-Ion batteries prefer small charges over big ones. Use it and then plug it in as soon as you can. The only time my Battery is ever fully discharged is when I'm doing a calibration.

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac
    Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac7,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:
    2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:
    1
      Total Number Of Cores:
    2
      L2 Cache:
    4 MB
      Memory:
    2 GB
      Bus Speed:
    800 MHz

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

  • Hello everyone. I'm a newbie here and have some questions.

Hi my name is Gary and I am a newbie to Flash player and what it is I can do and not do with it. Actually, I have some time on my hands since I got layed off and I haven't a clue what I am doing and could use some help getting started.
My OS is Windows XP Home SP3, 32 bit I believe.
Internet Explorer 8 version 8.0.6001.18702 not sure what bit version but I'm thinking 32 but.
Not exactly sure what else I would need to tell you info wise, so please feel free to ask and how I can find this info out.
My main questions are, am I able, is it possible or even allowed to download .FLV files to my hard drive and how do I do it to view at a later time? I can go into details at a later time.
I have read a lot of info and have even downloaded a few .exe files, like FLASH SAVING PLUG-IN for IE8, thinking I was going in the right direction but seems to me nothing is working like I thought it would. I have the button on my toolbar but when I try to save a file things just disapper and I don't know why.
    Please HELP!
    Thanks in advance,
