Newb Q - Caps Lock and Num Lock reversed?

I've never seen this is in 25 years of having a computer (though only a month with a Mac.) I booted my MacBook this morning and it appears that the caps lock and the num lock keys are reversed, ie; the caps are off when the key is lit and the numbers on when the num lock key is off. any thoughts? Thanks!

A user in a different thread reported this same problem and says that it was fixed by resetting the PRAM. This page gives you instructions on how to do this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238

  • Caps, Scroll and Num Lock Notification - How to disable

    Hi,
When i hit either my caps, scroll or num lock on my keyboard have this small notification popup and have problem disabling the function.
How will i go about to disable this?

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\Shared
    Find hpCaslNotification.exe and rename it.
Then open task manager and kill this process.
You have to rename the file, simplly killing won't work because hphotkeymonitor service runs it every time you press caps lock, scroll lock or num lock.

  • CAPS LOCK REVERSES...

Several times now my Caps Lock key will reverse itself-with the light on it is in small case; with it off it is in Capitals....??

I've had this but only when I've been using Parallels and had the caps-lock on when I've started Windows; toggled the caps-lock within Windows and then tried to go back to OSX - it seems to get itself confused between the two environments.
You don't state mcuh about the conditions under which it happens so I have no idea if my situation is even close

  • Caps lock reversed

My cap lock is reversed. I've seen other had the same problem and I tryed to fix it as it was explaines: PRAM reset was of no use. Restar was useless. also reinstalling maverick was useless. what can it be? if I disable the caps lock from the keyboard preferences, the led turns on, meaning that for my mac the lower case is set when the led is on.
    Can anyone help me?
I have a macbook pro 13" late 2011. 8gb ram. 2.4 ghz intel core i5  Mavericks ios, up to date 10.9.3
    Thanks

This is an iMac forum, so I don't understand why you are posting about a Mac Book Pro's keyboard issue???

  • Keyboard suddenly requires caps on and num lock on in order to type

But with the caps on it types lower case and won't work if both keys are not pushed. Have I changed keyboards or pushed some code without knowing it?

Sounds like you need some maintenance done. But on the chance that you caould correct the issue yourself, Try a PMU and PRAM reset. If this doesn't work, try the hardware test on the disk that came with your computer.
To reset the PRAM, hold down Option, Apple, O, and F at startup. Wait for two startup chimes.
To use the hardware test insert the disk that came with your computer and hold down D on startup.
If this doesn't work, you will need to take it in for service.

  • Laptop won't boot caps light and Num light blink

My Ts2-1375dx won't boot after I have shut it off and turned it back on. I get the cap & num lock lights blinking once. I remove the powercord, battery and all attached peripherals, hold the on button for 30 seconds reconnect the power and try booting again. Although this works (maybe after 1-3 tries) I don't believe that this is the way you should have to boot the computer. I also see lots of the same problem with the solution being the method I use. WHY IS THERE NO PERMANT FIX?!?!
    This question was solved.

Please try understanding the root cause for the issue by understanding the LED blink codes from the following weblink:

  • Started with reversed caps lock, now.....

Yesterday while working in Word, my caps lock reversed function as well as num-lock. Shutting down and restarting seems to have fixed most of the problems but now to dim my screen or change the volume, I need to press the fn key in combination with the appropriate F-key. Also num-lock key won't function. Any ideas...?

Sounds like to need to do a bit of maintenance.
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Reverse Caps Lock

I am typing on my iPad using my iMac keyboard through bluetooth.
Sometimes my caps lock reverses. By that I mean I sometimes get ALL CAPS when it is off and lower case when it is on & lighted.
I fix this by closing apps, turning bluetooth off, powering down the iPad, then rebooting 30 seconds later. All returns to normal.
What causes this? Is it related to iOS7? Am I hitting a key combination to make it happen?  Is it a sign from God?
    Most answers are appreciated.

I suppose it could be related to iOS 7. Have you updated to iOS 7.0.2?
If the steps you've described fix it, maybe just a simple reboot or a reset would work
    Try this next time
Reboot the device by pressing and holding down the home and sleep/wake buttons (power) at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

  • ****PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE**** PLEASE - Re: ON SCREEN CAPS LOCK INDICATOR

can someone please help me before i pull all of my hair out.
i have windows vista - 64 bit - the HP IQ500 touchsmart with a wireless keyboard.
in the systray the num caps and scroll lock appears as little blue boxes (when on).
everynow and again they simply disapper.
i researced how to activate them again but cant remember how to do it.
there is a way without having to mess with the registry and without downloading any program
i just cant remember how. i know wherever it is...you ultimately get 3 boxes that you can check in order to turn the options back on.
i am not talking about toggling, or sound, or mscofig and then boot.
does anyone know the steps to turn the caps scroll and num lock indicator in teh sys tray back on
oh, and right clicking on the toolbar and going to the notificiation area is not what i am referring to either.
I checked in the control panel programs and the hp on screen caps lock indicator etc program is there.
I reinstalled it nonetheless and confirmed it is installed properly
When I right click on the notification area I do to properties/notification area/customize
    There are two lists there
    1. Current Items and
    2. Past Items
For some reason I see caps lock - scroll lock and num lock under the past items
There you are also able to change the status of the items to either Hide wne active, hide or show
    All three (caps/num/scroll) are SHOW
I click apply OK then apply
I restart the computer and nothing. The on screen caps lock indicator is still not in the notification area/systray area
I repeat teh steps to ensure that the three have the SHOW option chosen and they are.
    So....
    Program is installed
    Items are check for SHOW
    Restart was done
Ohhh and also...I went to MSCONFIG and made sure that the HP Keyboard Program was selected/check mark as one of the start up programs.
There in a run command to activiate the 3rd party program (hp onscreen indicator program)
When you enter the run command that I cant remember...you then get this option where there are three check boxes...one next to num lock - one next to caps lock and one for scroll lock.
Once you check/select the boxes/options you want...presto they appear in the sys tray/notification area.
I just cant remember the run command it to save my life.
Please....put my mind to ease...cause I am losing it!
I just cant seem to "walk away"...must be my OCD :-(
    Thanks

  • MacBook Keyboard Caps Lock and Num Lock are working in reverse!!!

Ok, this sounds very strange...my keyboard on my MacBook only works when both the num lock and caps lock keys are depressed (so the green lights are illuminated). if the num lock is off then the keyboard does not work. if num lock is on and caps lock is off then the keys only type in ALL CAPS. if both num lock and caps lock are on (green lights) then the keyboard behaves as it should--except it's supposed to be that the num lock and caps lock keys should be off! I've checked system prefs for keyboard and mouse and for universal access, i've reset to defaults, i've restarted the machine...NOTHING works!
Has anyone ever seen this before? Any clue what to do?
    thanks
    Mark

Do computers have child diseases? My computer's immune system now seems to have taken care of the caps lock/num lock problem. I haven't had any inverted startups in weeks now. Very strange!
In my experience, the treatment is to ignore the fact caps lock/num lock is lit, and to restart the computer. If you need to log in to restart, do it as if startup was normal, since caps lock/num lock is not actually turned on.
And hope for the natural healing.
    Does anyone have different experiences?

  • Problem with Caps Lock and Num Lock after 10.5.1

I noticed after updating to 10.5.1 my caps and num lock lights were on, i thought this odd as I did not push the buttons, pushing the buttons to turn the lights off however actually turns the caps and num lock features on.
In short, the light is backwards! when caps is OFF the light is on and when caps is ON the light is OFF!
the same is true for the num lock key/light...???
    anyone else notice this problem?

Same exact problem... after updating I noticed that my numbers lock and caps lock were on. Didn't think much of it so I turned them off and then I notice that they are working in reverse. Caps lock on gives me lower case letters and numbers lock on I only get the symbols associated with that key above the number....mmmmm.
Anyone found a fix yet? I have looked in preferences and other places but found no solution.

  • Caps and Num locks on - typing lowercase

After today's auto-update of my MBP 2.2 (macbook mackbook pro software update 1.1) the capslock and numlock lights are on by default but typing is in lowercase... quite annoying as to use the numberic pad the num lock light has to be off. Another flaw in the MBP.. I bought mine 2 months ago, I am experiencing 5 dark (dust like) spots 'behind' the screen, always there on a light background, the problem with the baklight switching off after 30 seconds no matter what settings (a known problem) and now the caps/numlock problem..
As a long time Apple user (starting with a Lisa) and having developed several mac based applications, I am currently believing that Apple has serious problems.. the lack of QA in both hard- and software makes Apple stand on the same level as nameless clone makers from Taiwan (only with a significant but unjustified higher pricelevel)
The support here in Belgium is terrible, to fix my display errors I would have to miss my mbp > 4 weeks which is unacceptable.
    Dissappointed..

I am currently having the same problem. I did a Software Update today and when my computer started up, it had the "Num Lock" and "Caps Lock" lit up by default.
If I _shut OFF_ the "Num Lock," it types only numbers.
If I _shut OFF_ the "Caps Lock," it types in CAPS.
If I _turn on_ the "Num Lock," it will type like a normal keyboard with the correct key assignments.
If I _turn on_ the "Caps Lock," it will type in lowercase letters.
It as if everything is in reverse when they are turned on and lit up on the keyboard. Anyone have a solutions for a fix?

  • Lion - num lock and caps lock keys problem

Since installing lion I have to have num lock key and caps lock key turned on to type normally (otherwise I get all numbers if num lock off, or all caps if cap lock off). It's like the keys' functions have been reversed. (2.16 GHz MacBook).
    Any help much appreciated.

  • Post Leopard install, caps and num lock have opposite effect

Not sure what I did as I was running Leopard just fine on my MB Pro rebooted and found my Num Lock light was on. Turning it off resulted in the keyboard behaving as if it was on. Also when caps lock is on I get lower case, i.e., normal behaviour when Caps lock is off. When caps lock is off I get ALL UPPER CASE AND CANT GET LOWER CASE.
What did I do? I've checked keyboard settings, but can't seem to find anything that I might have inadvertently done.
    Mark

Actually this is a new feature of Leopard.
The developers have been wanting to rewrite some of the conventions that we use when operating computers, such as the much boasted about (and fraudulently claimed that they invented) multi-touch. and so they patented the reversal of these keys for us all to think, wow this is amazing and new! Apple are so cool and hip, nothing like those copycat MS people!!!
But seriously. Try fixing disk permissions (in disk utility) and also reset the System Management Controller by removing all power and cables into the computer for at least 15 seconds.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Good luck, and if all else fails try doing a clean install. I assume that you only did an upgrade so that u wouldn't have to reload all the data from the computer!?!
