Newbe in IWeb

I created 3 pages for my IWeb.
Each page is created fine in the Navigation menu.
Works OK with IWeb
Doesn't when published (Cursor doesn't even change).
I made 3 Hyper text links to these pages. Works fine with IWeb AND in published IWeb
Any Idea ?
Thank for your help

Your understanding is good.
Many thanks for helping.
I solved the problem without knowing exactly why that happened
I deleted the first page and redraw it
Republished the site and everything is working fine.
I think there was some transparent picture in front of the Navigation menu of pages.
Anyway one more time thank you very much

  • Newbie ~ Need iWeb / movie help ~ PC's having problems

Hello, please bear with me, I am a newbie. I am using iWeb to create a site for family and friends to keep up with my kids.
    www.jimcreighton.com
    or
    web.mac.com/creightonfamily
I have recently tried my hand at a small movie clip. When I go to the site I see it just fine. When I use my sons PC, using IE, I see it fine. However I am getting lots of emails from frustrated grandparents and others that they are either totally unable to see it at all. (A white "box") or they are able to see the screen but when they hit play, they get sound only.
Is this an issue on my end? Or on thier end?
Please remember that I am a total newbie at this, so be kind in your replies! Thanks in advance for any and all help.
    G5 iMac, G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Those that get a white "box" and sound are using older versions of QuickTime.
Ask them to download QuickTime Player version 7 from this link:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Once they've installed version 7 they'll be able to see your movie.

  • Newbie question - iweb into "iphoto" site?

I am just opening iweb for the first time on my new macbook. I really like some of the things that appear to be possible with it.
However, for a number of years now I have been keeping a collection of photos tracking the birth and growth of my son for the benefit of far away friends and relatives. I have built it though iPhoto and my .mac homepage space.
I have a beautiful new daughter for whom I want to do the same, but iPhoto no longer allows that. My question then is - can I post "iweb pages" into my exisiting .mac site without destroying all the other photos that I have collected and posted over the years.

Apnewbie is right.... your Homepages created with previous versions of iPhoto are indeed safe. They are not in any danger of being overwritten by iWeb, as far as we've all been led to believe so far. But iWeb is definitely the way of the future in terms of how Apple wants us to think of it...as you mention, the easy Homepage function is no longer available in iPhoto 6. Instead of Homepages, now Apple wants you to use iWeb to create your photo pages. You can do so using the iWeb icon in the bottom of the iPhoto window and selecting "Photo Page". This is the closest equivalent of the old Homepages function.
But iWeb is infinitely more functional and customizable than the old Homepages system. There is actually a "hidden" function for creating photo gallery pages easily, especially since it sounds like you already have your photos organized into albums in iPhoto. The process is detailed here in this .Mac blog entry...
    http://www.mac.com/web/en/Tips/013C4180-4787-4847-BAAB-319222AFC652.html
iWeb has a little bit of a learning curve, but I think once you get the hang of using it, you will not miss the old Homepages function. Of course, if you run into any showstoppers, please don't hesitate to post your questions here in this forum....It's filled with lots of helpful people eager to lend you a hand.

  • Newbie with iWeb ...

I'm planning to give a try to Mobile Me specially to check if I will be able to finally build my first website but I have initial questions ... lol
How can I figure out the size of my website built with iWeb 08 ? I would like to know if the space reserved in Mobile Me plans to host a website will be enough to hold my site .....
Can I register a personal domain name (anywhere) and have visitors writing it on their browsers and be redirected to my site at Mobile Me ?
Pictures: Should they be .jpeg or .png ?
Videos: Size ? Data rate ? .mov or flash ?
    Thanks in advance ....

I've been reading some post ... about "drag and drop" movie files on iweb pages, making it "bigger, havier and long loadings" and/or place them somewhere, like idisk, and have something like an url pointing to them
That was a suggestion for the old version of iWeb where the movie was uploaded every time you changed something on the page (I did not check this)
Since you have iWeb '08 : forget that tip.
    (streaming ? )
No, MobileMe does not give you QT Streaming Server capabilities.
I guess people doesn't need to have "my movies" phisically on their computers.
Indeed no, they do not need to save the movie on their computer.
But the movie will have to be "loaded" on their computer in order for the browser to play it.
That way, I believe I should compress my videos, for example, as H.264
    Yes !
And also it wouldn't increase my Data Transfer Limits on my MobileMe account.
No, the opposite : when they "save" the movie they can play it 100 times from their hard disk = 1 x Data Transfer.
When they visit your website 100 times to see the movie = 100 x Data Transfer.
    So, keep your movies small.
If you need the movie to be big :
_ you can buy more Data Transfer on MobileMe,
_ put the movie on YouTube or Vimeo and on your page : hyperlink to them (Not in an iFrame on your page!)

  • Total Newb needs Iweb Storage info

    Hello,
I currently only have an e-mail account. Not the Full.mac account.
So before I jump into that, how much space does an Iweb site hold in Maxium Storage space? Can I be a Store and sell things off that site?
    Can I take credit cards?
I will be displaying images of my Stock art for sale as well as Video tutorials. Can I do this? Does Apple premit this or do I hav eot get some sort of Bueiness account?
The ads don't go into details like that as far as I found. So, I gotta ask here.
    Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hello, and Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The space that you need depends on how big the site you create is. If you have a lot of images on your website, you can really eat up space.
Secondly... iWeb does not support creating dynamic pages for taking credit card orders, etc.
You can however put up video tutorials (as long as you don't want to charge for them, because iWeb does not support the Dynamic pages). This tutorial shows you how to add movies to iWeb: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iweb/1.0/en/bld1124.html.
    Hope this helps,

  • Newbie at Iweb--having difficulty with publishing

I have created a large website for my church. I then created one for the youth group, and one for a local non-for profit agency. (I am the youth director for the church)
I had published the first two pages for the church website and a few days later found time to actually do the rest of the work. Last night I attempted to publish and it stated that there was an error publishing the "index.html" file.
How do I figure out what error it is and how to fix it? I am so lost since it is my first time publishing, and I am BRAND NEW at MAC and .Mac stuff. I have only owned my mac for 2 months. Thanks for any help!!

Singer... hey... I was a youth pastor too... 14 years. Now I am just a pastor! lol.
    Here's the fix.
There are a number of "publishing errors"... mostly they are caused by three things.
    1. corrupt preference files
    2. bandwidth usage
    3. cpu usage
iWeb is a cpu memory and bandwidth hog soooo...
Quit iWeb. Don't just close the window, quit the program. You do this by going to file and choosing "quit"... sorry to be redundant, but some new switchers from windows haven't learned this yet.
go to systempreferences/.mac/idisk and make sure syncing is turned off. In fact... if your idisk is on your desktop drag it to the trash also.
second, while you're in system preferences, go to the screen saver and turn it off, also, go to energy saver and set both slide bars to "never"
Then... follow this path to get to the offending preferences file.
    hard disk/users/your user name/library/application support/iweb/DOMAIN
When you see the domain file, hold down the control key and click on it ONCE. You'll get a pop up menu, choose SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS. Inside either this first folder that comes up, or in an interior folder you're gonna find a file that is called "assets.yourusername.plist"
Yourusername is simply the user name you use on your mac.
    Delete this file.
This should take care of your issues.
remember, iWeb is a bandwidth hog, so when you publish don't use the net for anything else. You'll get these publishing errors when there isn't enough bandwidth sometimes. If you're at church and their are other users, it's best to wait till they go home for the day.
    Hope this helps.

  • Complete newbie to iWeb and .pdf file on my page

I previously had a small webpage under .mac. Now I have upgraded to Tiger and iLife '08. I am trying to create a new, better webpage, which would have a page where one can download a .pdf file. Two questions:
    1. The .pdf is 5.4 MB. Is this overly large? How can I tell how long it would take to download with a dial-up connection?
    2. Where do I put this file? I know how to put the link on the webpage layout. I am just not sure where to house the downloadable file.
This website will be put on an external (not .Mac/MobileMe) server (if that is the correct term).

To add a pdf file to your web site for downloading only compress the file first by Control-clicking on it and selecting the option "Compress xxxxx" from the contextual menu. Next create your text link on your site, select the text, go to the Inspector/Links and in the "Link To" menu select "A file". You will be directed to select that file. When you publish the page the zipped file will be uploaded with the rest of the site. When a visitor click on the link the zipped file will be automatically downloaded.
This demo page has some examples of such links at the bottom.

  • Newbe with iWeb question

Hello all new here and no computer expert by all means so please bare with me.
Trying to create a web page for a for a friend
What i would like to do is have a bio section for crew members. What would be the best way to do this??????
I would like to have one heading that says (The Crew) and then sub headings with each persons bio.
The only way i see how to do this is to create multiple (about me's) this would be fine but i would like them all under one heading.
    Thanks for you help

Rather than use a template you can start with a Blank page in whatever theme you are using.
Drag photos onto the page from the Finder or iPhoto and resize then to suit.
Insert text boxes for headings, sub headings and content. Make sure you use a web safe font.....

  • Link to files in iWeb

Newbie to iWeb! I have created a site in iWeb, and want to create links to pages (.htm) generated by another program (Reunion). When I try to create the links I can't get iWeb to bring up the "linked" page. I've tried using link to file (clearly wrong) and link to external page, without success. If this should be possible in iweb, how to do it please? Where should my "external" pages be located?
    Thanks.

Where should my "external" pages be located?
Welcome to the discussions. They should be published to a server. "External page" is the option to use. ...Does the URL you're trying to enter into iWeb's Link inspector work if you enter it into a browser's address bar? ...If not, it's not going to work in iWeb either.
Did you check the "Make hyperlinks active" box? If you do that, you should be able to click on the hyperlinked element and go to that page. If you haven't checked that box, the hyperlinked element won't become active until you've published the page and clicked on the element in a browser.

  • HELP! Can I view a site I created with iWeb using a personal domain?

Sorry in advance if this question has already been addressed. I too am sort of a newbie to iWeb. I just purchased a domain name through Google Apps. I would like to create my website through iWeb using the domain name ("www.youngvoters08.com") that I already purchased through Google Apps.
At this point, I'm incredibly confused. Is it possible to type in my domain URL (that I purchased through Google Apps) and have my iWeb website come up? I set up my personal domain through .Mac and I even tried publishing its contents to a folder (that was even more confusing). The personal domain option says it will take up to 48 hours to link to my domain.
All I want for Christmas is to be able to type in "www.youngvoters08.com" and be directed to the site I created on iWeb (as opposed to creating my site through Google Apps). Is this at all possible? And does it require me to be patient for 48 hours?
I'm afraid that the .Mac personal domain option means that I have to have already created a website with another service provider, and it doesn't mean that the personal domain I already purchased ("www.youngvoters08.com") will take me to the website I created through iWeb. I'm also weary that I wasted $10.00 by buying a personal domain through Google Apps, especially if I cannot create the contents of my website through iWeb.
Did that make any sense at all??? (Sorry for the confusion and redundancy:)

If you have both sites on one domain file - that is they both load into iWeb at once - click on the name of site 2 in the sidebar and drag it to the top of the list so that it is now in the #1 position. Now do a "Publish all to .Mac".
Your domain name URL is being directed to the index.html file in the Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites folder. This file opens the site that is at the top of the list in iWeb or, if you are publishing your sites individually, the last site that you uploaded.

  • IWeb??

    i'm a newbie to iWeb.
And iWeb is really ease to use to create a professional looking personal websites.
    My questions are:
1.) Any web hosting providers out there work same as .mac work? i mean they will show the pages' contents exactly what's shown published to .mac??
2.) After i published all my pages to the internet, can i delete all my works in the iWeb application? in the near future, let's say, i would like to change some texts/ photos in the published page. can i do it? (while i already deleted my works)
3.) i would like to create a site, like the e-commerce site. can i do it using the iWeb? (i know iWeb is for family uses, just curious, ok??)
    thanks...

.mac server is same as any other server as far as serves out pages, however server side services are quite different, ie:
    a) other server may (pr may not) allow you to have CGI, PHP or ASP... .mac server won't
    b) .mac server allows comments/attachment/search in blog/pod cast page without post processing.
2.) After i published all my pages to the internet, can i delete all my works in the iWeb application? in the near future, let's say, i would like to change some texts/ photos in the published page. can i do it? (while i already deleted my works)
No, what published can NOT be imported back into iweb.
3.) i would like to create a site, like the e-commerce site. can i do it using the iWeb? (i know iWeb is for family uses, just curious, ok??)
    Check your .mac TOS.

  • Rearranging photos in iWeb

I am a newbie with iWeb. Setting up my Welcome page was fine. I could easily drag and resize all the photos I imported from iPhoto. On the next page, however, all the photos I have dragged to the page are trapped in a blue grid, and I cannot select them individually to work on them. I find it hard to believe that the "nature" of the first page would differ from the rest, but......
Many thanks in advance for whatever help is out there. pah

It sounds like all of the photos on your second page are selected (at once). Can you select outside of the photos? That way you may be able to one at a time. The other problem might be that you put your iPhotos into a non-photo area (I may not be describing this right). Try this - go to your first page (the one that works). Click on the " + " at the bottom left of the page. Select the photo template. Drag one picture at a time from iPhoto (use the "Media" tool in iWeb to get to your iPhoto) into one of the placeholder pictures. Hope this works...Jim

Joe ~ If you didn't make an external backup of your domain file, then yes. For next time, read this Apple doc:

  • Iweb mp3 flash, media path problem

    Hi all,
So I've spent several days trying to understand how to get iweb and any mp3 flash player to work together. I really think I have things put together correctly cept it still says 'file not found' when I press play on the media player.
So this is what I've been doing.
I copy over the html code, paste it in to an html snippet, put the .swf player on the page. Now depending on what player I'm using, sometimes they ask for a media path and some not. I'll explain the different methods I've tried in a sec.
But here is where I think where the problem is. So I publish to mobile me, go to idisk>Web>Sites>MyWebPage and have put the mp3 in various different places after this point and nothing seems to work. I've tried
    idisk>Web>Sites>MyWebPage>song.mp3
    idisk>Web>Sites>song.mp3
    idisk>Web>Sites>MyWebPage>Media_files>song.mp3
    idisk>Web>Sites>MyWebPage>ThePage_Files>song.mp3
And I do this all after I've published to mobile me of course, but silly me I also have done before, republished and of course the mp3 isn't there anymore.
Now also depending on the player I'm trying I mess with the file path of the html code. trying both relative path:
    options.mediaPath = "song.mp3"
    and absolute path
    options.mediaPath = "https://public.me.com/mysite.com/song.mp3"
And I'm pretty sure I've tried all the combinations of all this different methods.
Any ideas? I've spent a lot of time really trying to solve this on my own but I do admit I'm still a newbie at iweb and flash, obviously.....
    Thanks guys and gals!

From the browser perspective an URL to any file on MobileMe starts with :
    http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/
So following your samples these are :
    http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/MyWebPage/song.mp3
    http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/song.mp3
    http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/MyWebPage/Media_files/song.mp3
    http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/MyWebPage/ThePage_Files/song.mp3
If you're using a Flash player, keep all your stuff OUTSIDE the folder iWeb creates and INSIDE the folder with your Flashplayer.
    The URL will be :
    http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/FlashplayerFolder/etcetera....
Then make it work. Once it does, display your player in a HTML Snippet with an <iframe>
    <iframe src="http://url.to.file.html" frameborder="0" width="500" height="500" scrolling="no" allowTransparency="true"></iframe>

  • How do I publish multiple websites from iweb?

Hi, I'm new with iweb and .mac in general and wanted to know about publishing multiple accounts from my iweb.
I bought a five-user edition of .mac last week and I wanted to get at least three different websites up and running. One site is almost 50% done and has uploaded just fine but when I tried to create another site in iweb, I have no idea where it's going. I created a second account in .mac and it shows up (I can log into and everything) but how can I publish to my brand new site without the other one going through each and every time?
This question may sound really dumb but please bear and mind that I'm a newbie with iweb and mac (I just got this powerbook in Sept. 2006).
    Thanks in advance,
    Dale

Actually, Dale, this is a pretty common question.
If you want the different sites to load to different .mac accounts (or different sub accounts), the easiest solution is probably to set up several different user accounts on your computer, one for each .mac sub account. In each of those accounts, set the appropriate .mac info in system preferences. Seems like I've heard of another approach, but this is probably the simplest.
Have you already started building a second site in the same user account (on your computer) as the first site? If so, we'll need to walk you through domain separation, too.
One other heads up: it is very important to back up your domain files (in your case in each account). The domain file is found in ~/library/Application Support/iWeb, where ~ refers to your home folder for your user account on the computer. Make sure to make a backup copy (preferably on an external hard drive or CD) after every major change in your website. Don't be lulled into thinking that a published website serves as a backup. It is not possible to import a published site back into iWeb. The domain file is your only link to creating/editing the site in iWeb.
Please post back if you have any questions or if I haven't been clear.
