Newbee question: Limiting Access

Ok, here the situation.
In my school, I would like to be able to block temporary access to internet or other software to my students individually or globally if needed. Is it possible to do that with ARD? I log to one of my student station and block his access. Possible? Right software? I'm new in the Mac World.
I would like to know what is your experience using this software in a *school lab*? Happy with this software. What is good? What to avoid? Thanks for your help!

I have the same need. Specifically, I need to be able to temporarily disable iChat without having to go into the pref. pane for each machine to deactivate it. (MediaCenter, this is done SystemPre/Accounts)
But I am with ya, along the lines of "Remote Locking" the screen, teachers need the ability to allow students to work on the desktop but not have access to instant messaging at certain times- this addition would be much appreciated in RD4.

I don't think that this is an option within ARD, but if you are running Leopard, there is a new Preference Pane called 'Parental Controls' that works much like you require. It allows you to set time limits on specific software and internet usage. That sounds like what you are looking for.

  • Limited Access - can't load web pages

Although I am connected to the internet, web pages won't load. Trouble-shooting, it says I have "limited access" (I've tried both hard wire and Wife - same deal, no go).
Thought it might be my ISP, so I was on the phone with AT&T support and we ran tests and ping showed packets going out and coming in normally, and I can connect to the online game I play, but websites will not load. No home page, no E-mail, nada.
I am not a computer geek, so I have limited know-how.
    This question was solved.

Interesting that AT&T support could not help.  When that problem happens, it could be a virus or some malware.  It can also be caused by your antivirus software - imagine that.  But first try resetting the stack.  SEE HERE for a dicussion.  The reset in the last section applies to Windows 7 also.

  • Limited Access not working as intended

In SharePoint 2010 when Limited Access (fine grain permissions) is enabled you could assign permissions for a user on a list item or list etc. SharePoint would then grant Limited Access permissions for that same user on parent scopes. This allowed the user
to have access to shared resources such as navigation and master pages allowing him to traverse to the target item or list without having access to any other content.
I can't seem to replicate this in SharePoint 2013. I have the following features:
SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure: Enabled (site collection feature)
Limited-access user permission lockdown mode: Disabled (site collection feature)
SharePoint Server Publishing: Enabled on all sites (Site feature)
If I assign permission to a user for a list. The user can view that list via URL, but cannot view the parent webs/sites. Cannot view the navigation (site scope).
If anyone has any idea as to why Limited Access isn't working as I hoped it would, I would be very appreciative of any help!
    Regards,
    Damien

Since Publishing is enabled, the pages are stored in the Pages library and CSS etc is stored in the Style library.  Make sure that users have access to those locations.  If they don't then having limited access won't allow viewing the default
page and navigation.  I suspect in 2010 you were using sites where the default page was stored directly in the site root folder rather than in a library.  Changes in 2013 moved away from that design.  So limited access normally won't allow display
of the root site unless you also give users access to the page and any additional required material.

  • How to set up full access and limited access wireless networks to laptops

    Dear Apple,
I just received my Apple 1 TB Time Capsule. Can someone please help me with a network configuration I want to set up?
I have a cable modem, and, three computers: a G4 iMAC (system 10.5.5), an Apple MacBook (system 10.5.5), and, a PC laptop.
The Time Capsule is connect directly to the cable modem.
    Regarding the computers:
    (1) I want the G4 iMAC to connect directly, via an Ethernet cable, to the Time Capsule, WITH FULL ALLOWED ACCESS to the Time Capsule and to the back-up function of the Time Machine feature, and, with allowed access to my HP inkjet printer (class 6110);
    (2) I also want the MacBook laptop to wirelessly link to the Time Capsule via the Airport utility on the laptop, and, WITH FULL ALLOWED ACCESS to the Time Capsule and to the back-up function of the Time Machine feature (using WPA/WPA2 security, and, without the network name visible to third parties), and, WITH allowed access to my HP inkjet printer (class 6110);
    (3) I want the PC laptop to wirelessly link to the Time Capsule (using WEP security), but WITHOUT ACCESS to the Time Machine, WITHOUT access to the back-ups on the iMAC, WITHOUT access to the back-ups on the MacBook, and, WITHOUT access to the inkjet printer --- I only want the PC to use the Time Capsule as a WIRELESS ROUTER so that the PC laptop can access the internet.
    (4) And, finally, I want to specify (Time-Capsule/Time-Machine/server ) access ONLY to the iMAC and the MacBook, so that others cannot gain any access.
I specifically need help to set up and configure the Time Capsule so that the PC laptop, as stated above, should have limited access to the Time Capsule --- namely, only to access the internet, and, not even be aware of stored data on the Time Capsule, not even be aware of the inkjet printer, and, not even see my WPA network name when the PC scans for wireless devices.
I also want the iMAC and the MacBook to have access to each other’s data stored on the Time Capsule (like a common server).
I have an old D-Link DI-624 wireless router that I used before buying the Time Capsule, which is available, if needed. Hopefully, I can configure the Time Capsule so that I would not need the old D-Link.
    Thank you in advance,
    David.

The basic method for remote access is not changed.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
    You have a few issues.
The really big one.. the school firewall should not let you connect to home.
Check the IT admin at your school but if they allow anything but a few protocols like http and https through, they are not doing their job. You cannot afford in a large network to have every Tom Dick and Harry access any open device.. that can introduce viruses and trojans into the network behind the firewall.
The general method for remote access on large networks is vpn and the TC offers no vpn connection.. just AFP.
If you intend using 3G wireless stick or the like then you can get access.
The next issue is static public IP or how to find the TC.. you need some way to find the IP if your ISP does not offer static ip, and the tc has no dyndns client. Since Apple shut down new users for mobileme and will close that service there is no method to find the TC IP without owning your own domain. You would be better placing the TC in bridge behind a router that does offer dyndns and port forward AFP (TCP 548) to it.

  • Apple mobile device support install/uninstall sets my wireless to limited access

    Dell Pavilion dv7
    Windows 7 64 bit.
    Current itunes 10.4
When installing itunes 10.5, my wireless connection changed to limited access.  I can not connect to the internet with wireless.  If I put my ethernet cable in, i can connect to the internet through the ethernet cable.
I found no solutions to fix the limited access issue.  So, i had to restore my system.  After the restore my wireless connection could connect to the internet again.
But now itunes does not work.  One of two messages come up.  The latest (i have done several system restores).  Either quicktime was not found or something about iTunes Library.itl is out of synch with the current version of itunes.
Now i decide to uninstall all the itunes installed products one at a time.  Itunes, quicktime, Apple software update, Apple mobile device support and there it goes, my wireless connection changes to limited access again.
    Any help would be great.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Think disabling WMM on G580 solved wifi Limited Access issue

I'm posting this in the hope the hope that it may help someone else.  I have a G580, model 20150 with Windows 8.1 and the Broadcom wifi card.  Like many of you, I had the limited Access dropout issue.  Here's the things I can remember trying previously:
Switching from the Microsoft Broadcom driver to the Broadcom driver.
Turning off power management on the Broadcom driver
Setting IBSS mode to just b/g
    Disable Bluetooth collaboration.
Disabling all things power managment I could find.
    etc...
The thing I found that seemed to fix it once and for all is going to the Advanced properties of the Broadcom and disabling "WMM".  As I understand it, WMM is a QoS feature for prioritizing audio/video port traffic over data.  Supposedly, you can't take advantage of wireless N speeds with WMM off, but I'll trade performance for not having to reconnect every 15 minutes.
I'm not going to mess with telling you how to disable WMM since there are tons of instructions and discussions on the interwebs.  I also can't guarantee that it wasn't a combination of WMM and other fixes that solved my problem because I'm not willing to experiment on my finally working pc.  My system has been constantly connected and going strong for 12 hours.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

Don't these usually work by intercepting the DNS quieries and then redirecting you to the gateway for authentication?  Check your DNS settings and  try to use theirs for the nameserver.  Make sure something else isn't getting specified such as Google Public DNS.

No, I have not chosen photos to share as I assumed that the Apple TV would access all photos and music that are stored on my iMac.
Thanks for your advice. I will check it out.

  • Limited-access user permission lockdown mode and allowing anon users to view list items

I'm working on setting up a public-facing SharePoint website that will need to support anonymous user access. I'm using the Enterprise Publishing Portal site collection template, so the Limited-access user permission lockdown mode feature is turned on.
Everything is working great, except allowing users to view a list item. One of the key features I was hoping to leverage was the ability to display custom lists on a web page using a List View web part. Then they could click on an item and see the DispForm.aspx
so the item's content was accessible, including any file attachments.
A real-world example is adding an RSS viewer web part to the home page and allowing anon users to click on one of the events to see the details of it. Currently, in lockdown mode, the users gets an authentication prompt.
I toyed with the idea of turning the lockdown feature off. However, I'm uncertain of the full impact that would have on security. For example, I know it will allow anonymous users to see who created and modified an item, which we don't want exposed to the
public (i.e. our employee names). Seems like opening a can of worms by disabling the lockdown mode...
Any ideas on how to tackle this would be greatly appreciated.

So far, this is the most promising solution I've come across:

  • Limited Access in parent objects not working

In my scenario I've a document library with several document sets. I break the role inheritence in the document set and provide individual permissions for users.
The thing is, that no limited access is granted to the parent object (list and web). Does that change in SharPoint 2013? I saw that the method AddToCurrentScopeOnly is new for developers - does SharePoint use that method, too for adding users?
Is there a way how I can change the behavoiur to the old one (like 2010)? Or what is the recommended workaround.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Fidy13,
In SharePoint 2010, it shows the Limited Access permission in the parent scope. For site administrators, it is very hard to manage site permissions because they cannot make sure where the limited users have permissions or not.
In SharePoint 2013, although it doesn’t show Limited Access permission in the parent scope, the users who have limited aceess permission can access the specified scope, and when you remove the permission in the specified scope, the limited access is removed.
It is convenient to site adminitrators to manage the site. So , I don’t recommand you change it.

  • WRT54G Limited Access in Vista

I have an XP and a Vista machine on my wireless network. The Vista computer keeps going into limited Access Connection after it is on for a while. The XP machine never looses connection. To connect again all I have to do is disconnect from the network then reconnect and it works fine, but I hate having to do that all the time. My cousin with Vista and a WRT54G router has this same problem also.

Update firmware, perform hard reset. Set all settings again. Change wireless channel to 1,6,9,11 and check which is best for you. Change advanced wireless settings : change beacon interval to 50, fragmentation threshold to 2306, RTS threshold to 2307, DTIM to 2

  • Lenovo G400s Wireless Connection Limited Access on Windows 7 Ultimate - 32 bit

Just bought Lenovo G400s, install windows 7 ultimate - 32 bit on it.
It turns out the wireless network driver need to install manually, the disc driver that came with laptop was for windows 8.1. So I went to lenovo website, put on the series and download the wirelss network driver which is around 250 MB.
I installed the driver and connect to the wireless network. My office wireless was on security and use static ip. I changed the ipv4 ip static already. It connected for a while, 1-2 second then lost connection. I checked with ping to google, got 2 records of live connection which is very short. After that it try to reconnecting itself again and again with status said "Limited Access"
I search in google, read some forums about problem in different series, so I use another computer go to Intel website to download latest driver. Got it installed, but it's still the same.
I try download broadcom driver, but it's really different and doesn't work at all.
Now I don't know what to do.
    Windows 7 Ultimate - 32 bit

    Driver Provider: Intel
    Driver Date: 1/26/2014
    Driver Version: 15.11.0.7
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compability Publisher
What makes it weird, although from intel website said the driver date is in 3/21/2014, and the version is 16.11.0, but this information I get from device driver was different.
    Here's the intel's website if you're wondering:

    Can anyone help me?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Today I want to install windows 8.1 on it, because the laptop came with windows 8.1 driver disc.
However, I try the wireless connection once again , one final try before I clean install the OS.
It turns out the internet connection is connected. Ping is quite stable, got a small drop. Nonetheless, IT'S CONNECTED!!!
I don't know what happened, I tried thousand ways yesterday and gave up. Today I don't set anything just try connecting with static IP set the ipv4 just like I did yesterday, and it connects without hassle!! is there a pc fairy or what?
The possible way I can think of is the router's internet connection's got restarted since It's a new day at office.
Despite how it solved still mystery to me, I think I mark this thread as Solved.

  • I want to buy Adobe Acrobat XI Pro full version... Limited access vs. full access?

I want to buy Adobe Acrobat XI Pro full version, but I don't know what the difference is between limited access to online services offered by the full version and the full access that's offered by the month-to-month version. In other words, what would I losing by acquiring the full version, rather than just paying the $19.99 per month and get full access to online services? Can someone help clear this up for me? Thanks!

    Hi dmoynihan0421,
The retail version of Acrobat costs around US449$ and the monthly subscription is available for a very nominal fee of 19.99$ per month.
The software is the same and there's no difference between the functionality of Acrobat except that in the retail version you have a serial number to permanently activate the software whereas in subscription Acrobat validates the license very month to check if the subscription is active or not.
The main difference between the two however is the Adobe Online services.
When you buy Acrobat XI Pro as a one-time purchase, you get only Acrobat software. No online services are included.
When you subscribe to Acrobat Pro in select countries, you pay a low monthly fee to get:
Acrobat XI Pro desktop software, including any upgrades
The FormsCentral Plus online service for creating and distributing web forms
The Adobe PDF Pack online service that makes it easy to create, convert, and combine PDFs in your browser
Acrobat.com for storing and sharing files in the cloud
The details of these services are as follows:
Adobe online services extend your Acrobat XI working environment to help you streamline and simplify your projects:
Adobe FormsCentral makes it fast and easy to create, distribute, and analyze forms. A desktop version of the online service is included in Acrobat XI Pro. Using the FormsCentral desktop app, you can create unlimited PDF forms for free from scratch or by using professional templates. If you subscribe to Acrobat Pro† or open a free or paid account with the FormsCentral online service, you can also use the desktop app to build web forms and manage form distribution and analysis.
Adobe EchoSign makes it easy to get rid of paper signatures forever. If you open a free or paid account with the service, you can use the Sign pane in Acrobat XI to send documents to others for signature approval and track results online. Recipients can sign electronically without installing software or creating an EchoSign account.
Acrobat.com lets you store and access your files online from within Acrobat or Reader on any device when you sign up for a free account or subscribe† to Acrobat Pro or Acrobat Standard.
Adobe PDF Pack lets you create, combine, and export PDFs from any browser or mobile device. PDF Pack is included when you subscribe† to Acrobat Pro or Acrobat Standard — or you can open a paid account.
Adobe Send is an Adobe online service that lets you send and track large files — including audio and video — without the headaches of email size restrictions. Paid subscriptions are available.

    Thank you in advance,
    David.

Not a problem. I just wanted to point out that you won't get any "official" answers from Apple on this board. It is all user to user and we only know what we know and some of the time it is conjecture on how to fix a problem if we've never seen it before. I try to point out when I'm guessing, but I don't always remember to rephrase my statements.
I'm not sure how to set up the Time Machine, but look for an option to only serve out files via AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) only. Turn off SMB sharing, if possible. The PC won't be able to understand AFP--it communicates via SMB (Server Message Block). I would think you should be able to set up
If the PC can use WPA or WPA2, use that instead of WEP. There is no way to set up special passwords for individual users on a wireless network. It is all or nothing. Now, the wireless password could be different than the password needed to access the files, I think. So, you could set up a simple WPA password for wireless, but set up user accounts with strong passwords for the file server. Again, I don't have Time Capsule, so I don't know how to set it up. Hopefully, I've put enough keywords in for you to look through the configuration options and get it set up.
As long as this thread stays open and unanswered, more people might look in and have a more specific answer for you.
