Newbie: Change in Approach PEFs and DNGs?

Waiting on my new MacBook and Aperture 2, but am reading furiously. Am laying out plans for a (hopefully) orderly transition from PC (using ACDSee Pro for workflow and file cataloging) to Mac and Aperture. Would appreciate comments on my planned approach, but first some background.
Here's what I do now: I shoot in RAW (PEF), then convert to DNG using Adobe's converter. I do nothing with PEFs, but do save them. I do editing from DNGs and convert to JPGs when I want to share.
PC file structure: I put photos files in top level folders (PEFs, DNGs, JPGs). Within these file type folders I have yearly and then monthly folders. This to facilitate DVD archiving (only have to burn latest photo folders, not subject oriented folders with mixed dates). I find images I want using categories and keywords in ACDSee. Works well for me.
By the way, I'm not taking tons of photos. I have about 30GB of files and that includes the same photos in PEF and DNG, then JPGs of the ones I've wanted to share. My MacBook will have a 500GB drive, so I can keep all my photos (probably for quite some time) resident on my HDD (current HDD contains a total of ~150GB including OS).
As I'm learning about Aperture, it seems I have a lot of redundancy I don't need. So here's what I'm thinking.
1-Planned backup regimen: a) use Time Machine to do routine backups of my HDD to attached external HDD; b) use online backup service to routinely backup all data online; c) given a) and b), I think I'll stop with the DVD archves except for PEF storage. Once I get a DVD's worth of PEFs in a folder will burn and delete from HDD (will not manage PEFs in Aperture).
2- Am undecided on whether or not to manage masters within Aperture or as referenced masters. What are Pros/Cons of referenced masters given I have plenty of HDD space to play with (i.e., all referenced files will be resident on drive)?
3- Aperture structure will be: years as folders, months as projects, albums within months.
4- Question: how to handle/reduce all the redundancy in my old system as I import? I print from my DNGs as ACDSee embedded my edits in them. Most JPGs are exact copies of adjusted DNGs, but some are quite derivative (e.g., processed IRs and some layered photos). I'm thinking I should ONLY import as masters DNGs and those JPGs that are highly processed derivatives of the DNGs and discard the JPGs that are simple copies. It would be easy enough to export those should I need them again.
Well that went longer than I'd planned. Thanks for bearing with me and I'll appreciate any experienced advice/comments anyone is willing to give.
Thanks

  • Import pef and export dng

I can import .pef files into elements 5.0 and make changes fine. I would like to know if I can export those altered files to a dng file format. When I try to export the dng file format does not appear. Do I need another plugin? I have already installed the latest (dated 03/02/2007) camera raw.8bi into the c:\program files\adobe\photoshop elements 5.0\plug-ins\file formats directory already.

I am trying to save pef as dng in the organizer portion not the editor. When I click on export I see options for original format, jpg, png, tiff and psd. I do not see a dng option. I am also evaluating Lightroom 1.0 and it does have dng as save as option. Is there another plugin I need for Elements 5.0 to save a dng file?

  • EXIF time altered on conversion from PEF to DNG

Converting Pentax PEF files from my *istDS to DNG using the Adobe DNG converter (4.1) results in the EXIF date/times all being shifted forward by six hours. I gather that the camera and the converter are miscommunicating regarding time zone. But the question is: short of running a batch operation to correct the times after the fact, what can be done about this to prevent this from happening in the future? I've also asked in the Pentax forums, in case someone there knows about any answers from the camera side of the equation.
One workaround I've found is to generate XMP files for my images before running the converter. I have discovered that if the EXIF info is present in the XMP file - and ACDSee Pro 2 will do this for me by default as soon as I try to write copyright info or anything else to my PEF - then DNG will use that instead of the "real" EXIF info to populate the EXIF fields of the resulting DNG file. Actually, I'm kind of guessing it is still messing up the "real" EXIF version of the info in the DNG, but it is also reproducing the XMP version info, and ACDSee is using the latter, and that's probably good enough for now. Still, I'd prefer other alternatives.

I still don't understand the issue *fully*. But examining my files with ExifTool, I see that the DNG converter is *not* in fact altering the EXIF info per se at all. What it is doing is adding an XMP block to the DNG file that contains a modified version of the DateTimeDigitized field. This modified version actually contains the time as shot, but it has the current time zone offset appended to it. That is, if the original EXIF dates read 09:00, and I am located in a time zone 6 hours behind GMT, the new DateTimeDigitized field created by the DNG Converter reads 09:00-06:00. Some applications will still display this as 9:00 AM, but others will display it as 3:00 PM - the GMT equivalent of 9:00 AM for folks in this time zone. In the case of the application I have been using (ACDSee Pro 2), if it sees time zone info on this field, it goes ahead and displays *all* times for the file in GMT, making it looks like the converter has modified more than it has.
I don't know if the converter is wrong to append the current time zone offset, or if ACDSee (and, apparently, some other applications) are wrong to display the time in GMT. The folks are ACDSee are looking into whether and how they should change the behavior of their application. I would also suggest Adobe consider whether appending the time zone info from the computer on which the conversion is being run really makes sense (perhaps it could be made an optional behavior). But I am inclined to suspect the real problem is an overly-vague specification - there may be no definitively correct behavior here.
So for me, this is enough understanding to feel like my workround is the way to go for me here. It actually suits my workflow better to generate XMP files before running the converter - it's the most convenient time for me to enter location information. Another workround would presumably be to run ExifTool to delete the XMP:DateTimeDigitized field immediately after running the converter.

I have an IPad mini and I changed the Apple ID and the password almost one year ago and, for a while, a message asking me to sign in to ICloud pops- up constantly. My ICloud account is registered with an old email address and password. I do not remember the password to my ICloud account, and ID address that my ICloud account is registered under is an old email adress which is deleted right now (the old mail account is deleted). I don’t have a rescue email adress and I don’t know the answers to the security questions, so I have no way of changing the ICloud password. A message asking me to sign in to ICloud pops up constantly, but I always just hit cancel. However, now I am unable to access Find My IPad. How do I get my ICloud account changed and registered to be under my current Apple ID (email) and password? It is possible to set the device as New Ipad?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact Apple ID Support, upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.

  • Lightroom and DNG compatibility?

Will Lightroom read DNG converted from RAW from a camera that Lightroom doesn't support?

    > "Barry what do you mean by converter? I am talking about taking a CR2 image and converting it to a DNG file."
I was talking about converting raw files in general to DNG files. (Not just CR2s). I was NOT talking about "raw conversion".
Adobe provide ACR, Lightroom, and the DNG Converter. They can all convert CR2s to DNGs (among other things). (They are all DNG converters and all raw converters, sharing core code).
Hasselblad-Imacon provide FlexColor which can convert their raw file formats to DNG. Pentax provide PHOTO Browser which can convert PEFs to DNG. Better Light supply ViewFinder for their scanning digital backs.
Then there are amateurs to who supply (typically free) converters for niche and minority and unofficial raw file formats to DNG: raw2dng; DNGForPowershot; SMaL to DNG; eMotionDng; etc:

    Hi everyone,
Beta 2 of the camera profiles and DNG Profile Editor are now available. Please visit here and enjoy:

I hope to have more detailed release notes/changes for you soon. You are welcome to ask questions, but please note that it may take a while for me to respond.
    Eric

    Eric,
I followed very carefully your instructions for installing the new beta2 profiles and deleting the beta1 profiles, but have the same problems as many others. I'd like to provide a bit more information. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium and have installed Photoshop CS4, updated with ACR5.1 and Lightroom 2.1 final release. As others have described, the default for all of my images was set to one of the Camera profiles (Canon faithful beta1), but now the profile name in Lightroom is blank. I tried looking at the other profiles and it does indeed appear that the beta2 profile is being used, but if I then reset the image it now shows ACR4.4, whereas the image had been imported with the camera profile as default. Also, if I open an image in ACR5.1 that was specified to use the same camera profile, it now shows ACR4.4 and it is not using the beta2 profile of what I had been using, I can see this by selecting the other profiles. Going back to Lightoom, I guess I could select all my images and select the Canon faithful beta2 profile, but then the mark shows up bottom right of the image showing that they have all been edited/modified, is there anyway to get all my images using the profile I was using but the beta2 version, without this happening and how about new imports?
    Thanks, David.

  • Raw and DNG

Have been successfully using RAW and DNG conversion with Canon 20D in CS3. New Canon 5D Mark II. No longer able to covert to DNG or open RAW files. Have downloaded updates RAW 4.6 and corresponding DNG converter that are supposed to work in CS3. Still not able to open or convert. Any siggestions?

I can understand being angry when you find out your camera isn't supported by Adobe, as I remember I was, too, just not being angry enough to find JPG or DPP adequate instead of spending $200 on an upgrade.  Adobe needs to pay their employees and not waste our money by hiring more people to keep all their old versions up-to-date, so once I got over being angry, I was ok with their policy.  I suppose it's possible you'd need to upgrade your computer, again, to run CS4 or CS5, and that would be more than $200.  My old computer will barely run CS4 and I don't have a 5D.2 so you're one step ahead of me.
Anyway, to summarize what the alternatives would be if you weren't avoiding them out of protest:
    1)  Upgrade Photoshop to a version that supports your camera, which would be CS4 or CS5 next spring.  This would cost $200 unless you had to upgrade your computer again.
    2)  Manually copy your files from your CF card to your hard drive, then use the DNG Converter 5.5 to convert them to DNGs, then Bridge and ACR can work with them.  This is free.
Another alternative I will mention, because this is what I do, is to use Lightroom, and then edit things in Photoshop if your processing requires it.  Mine rarely does, anymore.
I used to shoot JPG and use Paintshop Pro to adjust my images and that worked until I found myself in a situation where I needed to correct white-balance more than worked well with JPGs, so I converted to shooting RAW, with a temporary phase of RAW+JPG because I wasn't sure.
Once I was doing RAW, it only took me a day or two to reject using DPP as very annoying.  So I started using Bridge/ACR/Photoshop to process everything.  At one point an independent company had a program call RAW Shooter, where they gave away the "lite" version for free, and it did a reasonable job.  Of course Adobe bought them out, and then released a wonderful program called Lightroom based on the idea and some of the technology.  Lightroom costs $300 for the initial version, $100 for major upgrades that mirror the Photoshop major upgrades, and has free minor updates for new cameras that correspond to the free interim ACR updates.
If Photoshop, itself, does what you want, and it's only ACR that you want to update whenever you get a new camera, then Lightroom is a cheaper alternative to updating Photoshop just to get a new ACR version.
As I said, I love Lightroom, and would hate to go back to use Bridge/ACR as my main processing model, again, let along use DPP or shoot JPGs.
The next version of Lightroom, LR3, which improves the detail rendering and color-noise-reduction (so far) is available for beta testing until April 2010, from http://labs.abobe.com/  It doesn't have luminance noise-reduction enabled because that is apparently still a work-in-progress after Adobe has fundamentally changed their RAW rendering algorithm and luminance NR is the quite difficult to accomplish, but Adobe wanted user-feedback on their new rendering and color NR without waiting to perfect the luminance NR.
I am enjoying using the beta although I have to go to Photoshop to use the Noise Ninja plug-in for higher ISO images.

  • Why both jpeg and dng from my D90?

OK ....bear with me - I'm a beginner ... but why do I get photos from my Nikon D90 in both jpeg and dng formats? Is this desirable? Can I just select the dng format? If so, how?
And really confusing to me is the fact that often the jpeg copies seem to be more vibrant than its dng brother.
    Thanks, Burt

    Burtman,
First, your user manual will tell you how, in the camera's menu, to choose whether you want RAW, small RAW, JPEGs in Large, Medium, or Small, and a combination of RAW and JPEG.
Now, the why:  RAW files are specifically intended for those who plan on doing image processing after taking the picture...it is what you camera's sensor actually "sees" and when comparedto the JPEG will almost always look washed out as you are seeing.  If you are not planning on doing intensive post-processing such as white balance corrections, or using these as the kick-off point for creating large image files (such as TIFs coming out of Photoshop) that are not destined for large format printing, you may well find that (at least for now) you are fine just changing the file capture setting just to Large JPEGs.
Here is a link to the manual (you want the section starting on page 62), but the short version is:  use the "quality" button on the bottom left of the back of the camera, and then use the main command dial to change selections.
    Link to user manual.
    Hope that helps.

  • TS1369 I fractured the screen on my iPhone 4, 2+ years old and the latest when bought so I bought a new phone but I can not get my previous purchases to download to itunes that were there 2 weeks ago. Changed apple id once and now it shows up when downloa

I bought a brand new iPhone 4 as soon as it came out which was 2010 I think.  No problems until two weeks ago.  I fractured the screen on it so I am slowly losiong some functions like charge, touch screen ability and need to activate my new iPhone but I am having trouble with iTunes showing my full song library. I have 554 plus songs but some that will not update or download,. Two weeks ago is when this all began.  I used to have a different apple ID but changed it after a few months for security reasons.  Now when I try to observe my itunes library it only shows the most recent songs I have purchased,35.  Not all, and there are still songs that it states it can not download because my computer is not authorized, I authorize it and it says it is already authorized.  Then it gives me the old apple ID from years ago and I change it back to my new one, but this only causes it to do it over and over.  I called apple and they said all kinds of mean things that my son or husband had been using my ID or account, of which is impossible because all purchases have to be password protected and I get warnings if anyone attempts to access.  Also, their ID's are not my old one.  Their libraries have none of my music. I do not home share but I thought that iTunes says you can use the music for households if you homeshare so I do not know why the person was so abusive but I am frustrated. So, any ideas?  I was instructed to install icloud and did and it seems to me to be the culprit so I bought the stupid iCloud sharing manage,$25 yearly so that it automatically downloads your full library but no luck, still only shows the purchases I recently made with my gift card.  This was suggested by the apple care expert.  Can not update my phone until backed up, can not change phones until updated and backed up.

I know it sounds weird, and that is the reason I posted my question.  Because my case is not like all the ones I've found online and it's confusing.  I added a screen capture of my itunes with my old iphone (the one that houses my playlists) connected to it.
My playlists "ARE"  in my iphone 4s.  They are still there even though they do not show up when I plug in to itunes in my computer.
When connecting my phone to itunes on my macbook, the playlists do not appear anywhere in itunes.  I have found my connected iphone icon, I have clicked on the arrow next to it and it does pull up the standard lists that come with the iphone/itunes:  Music, Movies, TV shows, books.  That's it! below that is "Genius" and below "Geniuns" is "PLAYLISTS"  but the only playlist of mine that shows there is one that I created several years back titled "90's music" and that one I created it on my computer, not my phone.  Under "90's music" there are also other standard playlists that itunes automatically adds.
Does anyone else have this issue or know how to get around this.  I am starting to think that I am going to have to recreate these lists on my computer

Okay so I associate the e-mail address as the apple ID and that seems to be a wrong assumption.  I did go to my Apple ID and changes the e-mail address and the password but for the same and only Apple account I have ...
That is good.  In that case, your one and only account has not changed, just the login credentials you use for it.  All your previous purchases will remain associated with that account, and the new login.
In essence, an AppleID is an email, but it has two parts.  One is the login email address and password everyone traditionally thinks of as an AppleID.  But that in turn is linked to an account with Apple.  As long as you use the manage Apple ID portal to just change the email address and/or password for your exisiting AppleID, then the internal account tracks along with those changes as well.
However, on your iOS devices, you will need to log out and then log back in with the new login credentials:
settings -> iTunes & App Stores - tap your AppleID, and choose log out.  Then log back in with the new email address and new password.

I've been texting my friend with iMessage with wifi on and all of a sudden it changed to text message and won't let me send messages. My wifi is still on and working but it won't switch back to iMessage. Please help

What I recommend you try doing first is to turn iMessage off then back on.  If that doesn't work, make sure that your Apple ID and password are correct.  If everything seems correct and you still can't send out messages using iMessage instead of text message, I think you should either try calling AppleCare at 1-800-MY-IPHONE (1-800-694-7466) and/or scheduling an appointment at the Genius Bar at an Apple Store (that is, if there's one close to you).
    Hope this helps!
