Newbie FCP HDV monitoring and RAID questions

Hello forum gods.
First off, I must confess - I am a defector seeking assylum in the the Mac camp. I am a born-and-bred Windows person, and a longtime Avid editor who just made the jump and purchased the Mac-Pro with all the bells and whistles, and FCP Studio. I did this to accompany my JVC ProHD cam and deck.
I have no idea what I am going to do with the time I used to spend scanning for viruses and trojans. I am thinking I may write a novel, or build a house by hand - but that is another topic.
Now that the confession is out of the way - we can move on to the actual questions.
<big breath>
Ok - so I have this new fancy shiny computer, deck, camera, and monitors - one of which is the Sony 23" that is comparable to the Apple 23. I do not have a Kona or Blackmagic card because I was told that I did not need one right away - though I do plan on getting one later. For monitoring, I was going to use the firewire in/out of the JVC deck and convert the signal via the component outs to another HD monitor. This would bring the total monitors on the system to 3 - a 19" for the edit screen, the 23" for the video playback in FCP and the braodacast HD for monitoring the final signal.
Is this workable?
Now for the second question - storage and RAID.
Most of my footage will be either SD or HDV. Eventually I'll be going to XDCam, but that's a bit down the road. I have the internal 250 gigger that came in the Mac, and I purchased additional 500gb SATA II drives that I was going to use to set up a RAID. Should I do this internal or external? Will it work? What else do I need? What is the meaning of life?
Thanks for your replies. My credit card is anxiously awaiting your suggestions
G5 Quad Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Some question back atcha:
1) When you say you'll be working in SD, what do you
mean? Typically, SD refers to uncompressed 601, 720 X
486. Or are you referring to DV NTSC?
DV NTSC and/or the myriad formats that the JVC100 can do.
2) Your Profile says you have a Quad G5, but your
post says it's a MacPro. Which is it?
Sorry - Consider that my first public gaffe in the new Mac world. I bought the Mac Pro. Time to change my profile. I bought it last week - it isn't even here yet. Supposed to be delivered today...
3) Are you wanting to see your HDV sequence on a
external video monitor while you're editing? If so,
you'll need the Kona card (or the Blackmagic card,
but I don't do BMD, only Aja, so I don't know about
the Blackmagic offerings.)
I've read about the Cinema Preview function and although I know that this isn't the best idea for monitoring, wouldn't it work? On the JVC deck, it has the firewire output/input and component outs (among others) so in E-to-E mode, couldn't the deck act as my converter for monitoring on the broadcast monitor? If not - I have a line on a Kona-2 with the BOB for about $1400. Deal or no deal?
Now as for your RAID question, you can do either
internal or external. Just don't include the drive
that contains your system folder in the RAID.
I was planning on using the 250 for all my system files and the 2-500 giggers as my edit drives. Sound good?
EDIT: As for the meaning of life, go ask your father.
Gaah... He handed me "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and told me to get to reading....
Thanks for the help. Lord knows I need it.

  • [SOLVED] Dual monitors and raid - linux newb

    Hi
I'm raginaot and I'll probably be asking a lot of dumb questions here in the near future
I just decided to say goodbye to windows for a while. Been wasting too much time gaming and it was either - switch to linux or - sell my computer and move to the desert. I'm gonna try the former first and see how it goes.
I managed to install arch and get gnome up and running with the help of the most awesome linux install guide I have ever seen and I installed the xf86-video-ati driver package but I'm having trouble getting it to recognise my 2 monitors.
I'll list my hardware specs before I go any further:
    CPU: i7 920
    RAM: 12GB (3x4) Mushkin Silverline 1333MHz
    Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R (rev 1.6)
    GPU: ATI HD5870 1GB
    Souncard: Auzentech X-fi forte
Monitors: Samsung 2693HM and Samsung 226BW
now the monitors seem to be stuck in mirrored mode, both showing the same image at 1280*1024 resolution
when I try to set them both to on and their native resolutions (1920*1200 and 1680*1050) in the display settings I get a message that says:
"the selected configuration for displays could not be applied
    required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(3600, 1200), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1920, 1920"
But when I unplug the 22" display, I can set the 26" to native res just fine and vice versa.
    Now to the second issue...
I have 2 1TB drives in raid0, but in fdisk -l they appear as 2 seperate 1TB drives instead of 1 big 2TB like they're supposed to (see output below).
I guess I have to mount them in some special way, but I have no idea how. The raid worked right away in linux mint.

Glad you were able to figure out the RAID part - I can't really help you with that.  As far as the dual monitor setup, I would suspect that you will need to do some stuff with the xorg config to get it working.  I would say that xorg.log would be the first thing to look at - to see what is limiting the modes available to X.  Maybe post the xorg.log and your x configuration
My post in this thread might give a bit of background on how X comes up with what resolutions it lets you choose.

  • Dual monitor, and other questions....

I'm sorry for these questions if they've already been discussed... with all the back lash, I'm having a hard time wading through all the comments.
    I have a macbookpro.
I use an external 24" monitor along with my 15" laptop for editing. My 15" is used for my canvas.
1: Can I use this set up with the new FCP X?
I use PPro CS5 currently and I like the way it handles media and saving my projects.
2: How does FCP X handle media?
2.a: Does it handle media like iPhoto / Aperture?
2.b: Are projects saved like in iMovie?
I keep all my media on external hard drives.
3: Will this be a problem with FCP X?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Tony

On my dual monitor Mac pro, the main monitor has the timeline and canvas. The second monitor has the events I think, basically the bin. You'd probably want to make your 24 the main monitor
FCP X handles media and projects a lot like iMovie. iTunes and iPhoto are accessed just like iMovie. You can save media to whatever drive you want although you can't really drill down to a particular location
    Hope this helps

  • Xserve disks and RAID questions

I have an Intel Xserve with its two original 750 GB disks. These are configured as RAID 1 (mirror).
I intend to purchase an identical disk as a hot spare and upgrade two old G4s with four each of the same disks as reserve web servers/backup.
The original disks are Seagate ST3750640NS which I can buy for £140 although the Apple price is £386 including the disk carrier. Apple refuses to sell the disk carriers separately.
The PCI boards I have found are:
    http://firmtek.stores.yahoo.net/sata1v4.html
    and
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatax4i.html
    costing $120 and $200 respectively.
There are PC boards as cheap as $20 but these may have bootability and compatibility issues. There appears to be little information about the proportion of hard/soft RAID resulting from any of these boards.
    My questions are:
1 - Is there an inexpensive way of buying disk carriers for recent Xserves?
2 - Are there alternative satisfactory PCI boards?
3 - Do such boards differ much in terms of RAID types supported?
4 - Do such boards differ much in terms of the degree to which they are host computer independent? - ie more hard than soft and hence, presumably, faster.

    >1 - Is there an inexpensive way of buying disk carriers for recent Xserves?
I'm not aware of any sources other than Apple (at least that I'd trust).
    >2 - Are there alternative satisfactory PCI boards?
There are several manufacturers who make PCI RAID cards that you can use. You've listed two, but there are others including the RocketRAID series, and those from ACard.
    >3 - Do such boards differ much in terms of RAID types supported?
In my opinion, you get what you pay for.
Cheap cards may support RAID 0 and 1, while more expensive cards may add RAID 5. This may or may not be important for you if you're just mirroring.
There are going to be performance differences between each card. Since you're using G4's, though, you're going to have other bottlenecks, so disk speed isn't likely to be a big factor.
    >4 - Do such boards differ much in terms of the degree to which they are host computer independent? - ie more hard than soft and hence, presumably, faster.
If you get a card that works in a Mac, it's likely to also work in other hardware. The same can not necessarily be said the other way around - cheap PC-centric cards may not support Macs, mostly because of driver issues.
Note that you may also have issues with booting - not all cards can create bootable volumes which may leave you out in the cold if you don't check that first.

  • Perturbing FCP 7 Log and Capture Question

I tried to digitize some HDV footage this afternoon, in theway I’ve always done it, but now suddenly it doesn’t work.  Details to follow, but first my rig:
Mac Pro (Nehalem 2009) running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, NOFIREWIRE 400 PORTS
Final Cut Studio 2 with FCP 7
Sony Z1U HDV/SD videocamera connecting to Mac Pro via i.linkcable (aka firewire); I am using this to ingest because I can’t afford a deckat the moment.  I know about thewear on the heads, etc., etc.
OWC Mercury Elite-Al Pro external media drive connected tocomputer via eSATA.
Here’s the scenario (keeping in mind that I’ve done thiscountless times in the past with no problems):
I connect the Z1U to the OWC drive with a 4-pin to 6-pinstandard FW 400 cable.  I do thisbecause the Mac Pro does not have any FW 400 inputs but the OWC drivedoes.  So I am in effect“daisy-chaining” and perhaps this is the problem.
    I turn on the camera.
I start up FCP. It tells me:  “Unable tolocate the following external devices: HDV (1440 x 1080) 60i.”  After hitting “check again” a fewtimes, I hit “continue.”
I load my new project, into which I want to bring all thiswonderful HDV footage of my friends’ wedding.  And, as I have done so many times, I hit command-8 to bringup the log and capture window.
To my horror, it says, “Unable to initialize capturedevice.  Device is not connected orthe capture preset is not setup [sic] correctly.”  Etc., etc.
I have read many posts here and elsewhere on similarproblems, so let me say what I have done:
I check Easy Setup: It says HDV – 1080i60, which is what it should say.
    My Audio/Video Settings are:
    Sequence Preset: HDV 1080i60
    Capture Preset: HDV
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV Firewire
    Video Playback: None
    Audio Playback: Default
So now I go to my camera.  It is set to output HDV.  Component says 1080i/480i.  i.LINK Convert is off. Down Convert says Squeeze, but I assume that’s meaningless since thei.LINK Convert is set to off. A/V>DV Out is set to off.
None of this makes a lick of difference, as far as I cantell.
I shut off the camera and disconnect the cable, thenreconnect the cable and turn it back on. No help.
I trash my FCP preferences, start FCP again, redo myprefs.  Nothing.
I hit the reset button on the Z1U.  Nada.
I do all this and then reboot the computer.  Bupkis.
The footage was definitely shot in HDV.  I can play it fine on the camerascreen.
I check the cable, which is brand new; it is firmly in placeon both ends.
Okay, so now I turned off the camera, quit FCP, ejected theOWC drive and turned it off.  Iunplugged the eSATA cable.  I wentand got my MacBook Pro and connected it to the OWC drive with a FW 800 cable.  The camera was still connected to theOWC media drive via the i.LINK cable. I turned on the drive; I turned on the MacBook Pro; I turned on theZ1U.  I started up FCP, and here’swhat happened:
It worked perfectly. No problem recognizing the camera, noproblem controlling it from the L&C window.
You might say that this solves my problem.  But I prefer to edit on my desktopcomputer, and I am irritated that I can’t figure out what’s wrong.  My suspicions are that it must havesomething to do with the cabling. FCP is working just fine with the Z1U routed through my media drive, theOWC.  The only differences are thatmy drive is not connected to the computer via eSATA but FW 800.  I see no differences in the settings.
    Any insights?
    Thanks,
    Giraut

From what you say, I would suggest that the OWC enclosure does not utilize/energize the firewire interface when it is using the eSata.
    This is just a guess.
Connect the Drive/Camera to your desktop via the FW800 cable: Mac Pro > FW800 Cable > OWC enclosure >FW 6Pin to 4 Pin Cable > HDV Camera. The speed difference between eSata and FW should be minimal as in each case you are limited by the FW400 connection at the camera.

An externnal monitor, as well as thunderbolt raid storage.
Is there any way to connect an extra monitor while using the Thunderbolt for raid storage?

  • Newbie Forte 4GL SQL and script question

Kudos to all contributing to this forum. I appreciate all the info I have
    been receiving.
I have a Forte 4GL question that someone may be able to help me with. I
have created a simple window class with a number of fields and a button.
When I press the button I want to take the values for each field and map
them to the appropriate column name in an oracle table.
The database and the table have already been created. I have verified in
SQL that I can query the table and I have created the Database manager in
the environment console. I have also created a DBSession service object
with the approprate information in the Database Tab.
I am unsure what the syntax should look like and where to put the SQL
    statement.
Let's say the Window Class is called "Prototype" and the oracle table is
    called "Table".
On the Prototype the field names are LastName, FirstName, and Address.
The corresponding column names are LNAME, FNAME, ADDRESS.
Can I put a sql insert statement in the Display method in the window class?
    self.Open();
    event loop
        when <CreateBtn>.Click do
                    self.Window.MessageDialog
(MessageText='You have clicked the Create button.
Information will be committed and sent for processing',
                            MessageType=MT_INFO);
    ?<SQL insert statement>?
            when task.Shutdown do
                    exit;
    end event;
    self.Close();
Lastly, how would one code in TOOL a command to call a shell script?
The shell script will reside on a UNIX box (same box where the database
resides) and create a flatfile of the data I just committed to the database
and then transport it to a remote location. I realize
there are a number of ways to tacke this. My initial thought is to have
Forte call a shell script execute a sql command to create a flatfile and
then handle the transport. The shell script would send a return value to
Forte indicating the process is complete.
    Thanks for your help.

to build on pressh's comment, most rc.d scripts have a start, stop, restart case statement form.  i'm not sure if that's required to get it working correctly (i've got a custom dropboxd rc.d script that's giving me headaches at boot time so i won't offer any more "expertise" ).
now to my main point: it seems by the nature of your script, that that line would be better off in rc.local

    Running Win XP home 32bit
Basicly i have a query, ORIGINALY when i changed 2 x Hdds about 6mnths ago i set up as RAID 0, but on the way to getting that up and running i had the `devices scan b4 srart-up`   dectecting drives as AHCI.... but i didnt take much notice of this seeting as i meant to ser it up as RAID, LOL
NOW, shortly later i wanna try a ahci setup `non-raid` and cannot get the mobo 2 dectect as ahci, now i have always had 2 sliptream the `F6` flopy drivbers in for my intel raid controller....
as far as i can c theres only  2 suitable drivers for the  board on the floppy anyhow, the `ICH9R sata achi controller` and the `SATA-RAID ICH8R/ICH9R`, alll the other are for different controllers.
i built this a few weeks ago and dint realise it wa sall in UDMA5 mode(slow as assholes !)
now IF in the Bios i set the `RAID MODE AS AHCI` (because with an array defined, the sata only mode kicks in (AHCI)), i used ahci contrller driver frome floppy, NOT `SATA-RAID ICH8R/ICH9R`
i assume this is ok as it is ahci mode i want NOT raid, BUT do i use the RAID drive because in Bios its all under RAID MODE=ahci   ???    (they `should` be sperate really )
BUT I STILL GET IDE MODE IN HDD SCAN AT START-UP
i am connected on ports 3 and 4 I`m not the jmicron thing, i know about that )
i tried all different bios setting etc, but cant seem to get hdd to show as ahci like they did once befrore, the ONLY difference between now and then, is NOW i on a newest bios version
    Help !! LOL
    thanks.

hi, i hope these help, i done a few hdd read write test to see if there`s any obvios indication of what mode its in, do these help ?
edit: i have  been trying to find any indication that NCQ is active on the hdd, but cannot see it anywhere in device manager etc etc.... ( because NCQ is ONLY supported by ACCI mode, ye
    ah ? )
it does give the option to enable disk write caching on the hdd(currentley OFF) what mode is hdd caching avaliable in ?
erm, i was looking on the toms harware site and theres a list of all the Intel ICHR controllers, i`m assuming the msi p35 platimum is the  `Intel® ICH9 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 2923` version  (msi site just says ich9r)  what is the  - 2923 bit about?
    thanks.

  • 10g RAC remote monitoring and services question.

IF I plan to offer one of my clients remote Dba services for 10g RAC- Standard Edition....do you necessarily have to use ASM to do so or is that just the Oracle push and I can actually use other file systems like Linux ext3, etc?
And if I have to use ASM how hard should it be for my Dba's to train themselves on it?
    any help is appreciated.

    From metalink
Can I use OCFS with SE RAC?
It is not supported to use OCFS with Standard Edition RAC. All database files must use ASM (redo logs, recovery area, datafiles, control files etc). We recommend that the binaries and trace files (non-ASM supported files) to be replicated on all nodes. This is done automatically by install.
    Modified: 01-SEP-04 Ref #: ID-5748
And it's easy to manage those files, I think your DBAs just reading the doc can do that.

  • FCP Problem with Firewire output to external monitor and speaker ???Help

i have a g5 powermac. the problem is when using Final cut pro 4hd. when i output my work through firewire to my external monitor and speaker i have a problem with the audio signal. Theres feedback/noise/hiss from the speakers. The firewire connects to DSR-11 vtr deck which feeds my monitor and speakers. it only happens when in FCP is set to A/V firewire output. does not happen if Video output is not set to firewire.
I Diagnosis is that it is not my dsr-11 deck or firewire i've ruled those out. The problem is either FCP software or Hardware problem with my G5
Does anyone have a similar problem. please respone, i will try to answer any respones,
    Thanks

From the firewire that feeds the dsr-11. on the output, i use s-video cable to my monitor (sony pvm-14l) and High Quality rca cables thet feed the audio to the Roland Speakers.
I've changed all wires and still have audio problem. I,ve changed my Dsr-11 deck to my camcorder and still have the problem.
If any of u guys use FCP The problem happens When I select view> external Monitor > and select firewire for Audio/ and video. I have never changed my editing habits, something just went wrong with the signal, I think its a Hardware problem with the firewire connection. I'm Going to have to bring this to a Apple Service Center In my local area one day.

and if i then choose seq. setting HDV :
Videocompressor HDV 1080i50 was not found present and enabled for this compressor setting the video compressor to Animation?
Also there are still intermidate codec's in my library? :

  • How do I add a progress monitor to a drag and drop question in captivate 7

I need to build a quiz. We have spent a lot of time on the style guide and appearance but I am having difficulty adding a progress monitor to my drag and drop questions. How can I do this?

A Drag&Drop is not a normal question slide, hence that progress indicator is not added, and it wouldn't even be functional.
Long time ago I explained how to create a custom progress indicator, maybe it can help you: Customized Progress Indicator - Captivate blog

after upgrading to NX-OS 5.04, out snmp traps monitoring system is not generating ticket / incident for the snmp traps and my question is whether we need to apply new MIBS for that?

Looking at the error message "The Network Adapter could not establish the connection" , It appears hostname and port may be incorrect. Review the targets.xml under E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\SAP_solman_SDB\emd and
emoms.properties under E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\SAP_solman_SDB\config folder to make sure host ( sap_solman) and port (1527) are correct.
As far as setting the environment variables goes, you can go to control panel -> system -> advanced -> environment variables and set the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID

  • RAID PCI Necessary (and another question)

    Good Morning,
I just ordered an XServe with 3x80GB drives. I did not order the RAID PCI card.
Is the RAID PCI card necessary if I want to Mirror the boot drive to one of the other 2 drives in the Xserve?.
Also, If I were to setup up the 3 drives as RAID 5 configuration, how much usable drive space should I expect to have available?
(I also ordered an Xserve RAID with 4x500 GB drives. I will have 2 sets of mirrored drives from that for data storage)
    Thanks very much

    >Is the RAID PCI card necessary if I want to Mirror the boot drive to one of the other 2 drives in the Xserve?.
    Necessary? no.
Mac OS X can handle RAID 0 (striping) and RAID 1 (Mirroring) out of the box.
The Hardware RAID card can do RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 5, so you only need the card if you want RAID 5.
Note that the card can also do RAID 0 and RAID 1 and should be faster since it offloads the work from the main CPU, but it isn't necessary.
    >Also, If I were to setup up the 3 drives as RAID 5 configuration, how much usable drive space should I expect to have available?
The general rule is that RAID 5 uses one drive for parity, so for a RAID 5 array with n drives you end up with a capacity of ((n-1) * drive size).
So in this case, with three 80GB drives you get (3 -1) * 80, or about 160GB of usable space.
    >(I also ordered an Xserve RAID with 4x500 GB drives. I will have 2 sets of mirrored drives from that for data storage)
That's not the optimal use of 4 drives in the XServe RAID.
With two sets of mirrors drives I assume you're intending to create two 500GB mirrored volumes which results in 1TB of usable space.
Compare that with a four-drive RAID 5 set which yields 1.5TB of usable space. You get 50% more volume that's still RAID protected against a drive failure.
OK, you might tolerate two drive failures in the mirrored scenario, but you'll have to decide whether that minor advantage outweighs the additional space.

  • Newb Keyboard and mouse question?

    Hello,
I recently got 2 used Sun systems: an Ultra 2 Creator and a Storedge A1000. I have the boxes but no cables whatsoever. I also got an Apex Sun Trap, which hopefully will let me hook up the Sun boxes to my PC monitor and keyboard/mouse.
I just ordered a 13W3 M/M cable which should connect to the Sun Trap.
Now I just need to get the keyboard and mouse under control. From what I understand I need an 8-pin miniDIN. Is this the same cable that Mac printers use? Can I just use a Mac printer cable? Or do I need something special? Anyone know of a place that sells 8-pin miniDIN cables on the cheap?
    Thanks in advance,
    David

    Hello.
As far as I know (old ?) MAC computers used the same connectors.
For KB & MS you do not need a cable of a high quality because only a low data rate (1200 baud) is used.
    But be careful:
By disconnecting a keyboard from a Sun and re-connecting it the workstation may go into "ok-prompt" mode (stop the OS).
