Newbie Flash integration question, for video gallery

Well I'm a video editor not a web designer, but I get the basic concepts. Am using Dreamweaver CS4 and Flash CS3 and I have my head around CSS based design and have also managed to get my head around designing an interactive video gallery in Flash.
I want a HTML based site for web search indexing reasons but I need a video gallery that is broken up into sections, (eg. corporate, public sector, Arts... you get the idea). If I design a standard web site with navigation bars, do I include three or more categories (e.g., corporate etc) on the main site navigation bar and incorporate separate flash files on each page to show the relevant content for that category or do I include just a general video button on the web site's navigation bar and then navigate to the individual categories within the Flash movie file itself. The later seems the most logical, but do you experienced web designers find that adding another layer of navigation confuses the end user? Is there a way maybe of addressing individual sections of the Flash movie from HTML buttons? What is the best logic to solve this problem and then I can work on a solution?
Lastly, and I'm sorry for the long post, my site will be very basic so do I really need to incorporate Flash at all; can I address multiple external .flv movies with various buttons within Dreamweaver.

No.
Think of it this way:
Your site has a Nav menu that leads to individual html pages.
Each page contains a Flash Video Player with a playlist.
The Playlist contains links to all the FLV clips relating to this page's topic.
Notice I said clips. Don't try to use one long playing video on the web.

1) The N95 currently does NOT offer the facility to use the flash as a light for video capture.
2) I don't understand your question
3) Your GPS should work in Iran, although there may be an issue with the US (to which all GPS satellites belong to) not allowing Iran to use the satellites - not too sure about this bit.

Best settings for importing HD movies to ATV for video gallery

hello -
i work for a gallery, and we have a video artist who will be showing HD videos here for 2-3 months. we bought 2 AppleTVs to use to show the movies, and i'm trying to figure out the best way to convert the material and get the files on there.
using the "Create Apple TV version" doesn't preserve the HD quality of the originals, which i know aren't compatible natively. i was hoping there is a place in the settings for the ATV where i could at least review the video codec in use when converting in iTunes, but there doesn't seem to be a place for it. am i blind or is there no choice in the matter?
i've tried converting in Quicktime Pro using the settings that are on the ATV specs page, and i was successful once (in a short excerpt without much video movement) but no longer (using an excerpt that has more color, movement, etc). the bit rate is too high i'm guessing, tho i've tried to limit it to 5000 k/sec. it ends up coming out 18m / sec for some reason......
for some reason i can't get handbrake to open the file.
any thoughts? we can't afford to buy new computers to stream the original off of, so we're hoping the ATV can show the movies in the highest def possible. she sent them in 720p50 format, so i had to buy a decoder plugin to view them (DVCPro HD from Calibrated Software).

Flash player support for video playback in Lumia 8...

When will Nokia/MS support Adobe Flash player for Lumia 800 like they have for Android?
Also I should be able to download a browser of my choice on Lumia as well. Any clarifications from Nokia most welcome!

Adobe has announced that it has ceased development of Flash for mobile phones (in favour of HTML5, and due to the opposition of both Apple and Microsoft to allow support of Flash for their mobile operating systems), so from that direction neither Microsoft nor Nokia is going to get any help.
If the Adobe Flash Video format specification is publicly available to use or to license (I don't know if it is), then at least Microsoft could implement support for it, if they wanted to (Nokia might not have sufficient rights from Microsoft to add new codecs to Windows Phone).
So, you might direct your question primarily to Microsoft, rather than Nokia (of course, a Microsoft representative will probably read this, too, but whether they'll response or not is another matter).

Flash Player Question for Adobe

Hi I am new at this, I posted a Question a day ago under Flash Player 111 people have looked but no
answer.
I can watch Videos & Animation the only thing that will not work is Adobe download, the screen
freezes every time after telling me it cannot install. It takes a couple of minutes to unfreeze
microsoft askes to send error report but that freezes and anything else I try to do.
After Adobe screen completes it then just drops of the screen, when I go back to
Internet Explorer it asks do I want to go back to session that terminated, if I say yes we go back
freezing again. If I go to home page all works well again. I need the Macromeda Flash Player
for Incredimail, I have been using this programe for many many years only now having this
problem. I have also downloaded the Flash removal program and it worked okay.
Please Adobe there must be a reason.

Here's my advise.
Focus ONLY on Flash Player. Don't think about the other installs because it just causes confusion.
Now, try this and ONLY this and report back:
1. Launch Internet Explorer
2. Go to http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome
3. Tell us what version of Flash Player it says is installed
Do NOT look in control panels for installed programs. Flash Player is a browser plugin/activeX control, it's not an installed application. It only works with your browser. The above test will tel you if it's installed and running correctly.
Also, incredimail is an application that gets installed on your machine. I don't see what it's relationship to Flash Player is.
OK I uninstalled all Flash Players to test this, and incredimail does seem to rely on the presence of most likely the Flash Player activeX control.
Still, do the above test and see what it says.

If the steps in this technote seem daunting then I'd suggest seriously considering taking the machine to a local professional.

Question for video editors re. external storage

Sorry this isn't directly FCP-related, but I'm hoping the question will be permitted as I'm trying to get input from colleagues in the video production world.
I travel a lot... not only on airplanes but bumpy trucks etc. for my video work, and I often have to take my external hard drive with me. I'm thinking that I'd better have two of them: one stable one at home which won't move, as a backup, and one that I can take with me for digitized footage etc. that I need to do on the road.
I was told that any drive over 160GB will be too vulnerable for such rough treatment. Is that true?
What brand/type might be the best? It was suggested to me that IOmega might be right, though PCWorld consistently rates Seagate and Western Digital as the best. For the stable back-up, a Seagate I think would do (I have a 300GB one at present).
If this is truly the wrong place for this post, please forgive and redirect me to one which might provide the answer from the right industry pros.

I have had very poor luck with WD drives. Had to replace 4 drives within one year. I have yet to return any Hitachi's of which I know have 6, or my Seagates. I no longer buy any WD's and only use them for long term storage so they do not get much use. My system now has 4 250GB Hitachi's inside for everyday use.
Seems like calls to the manufactures to get specific drive specs would be a good starting point.

I need to build my website that will feature my portfolio of videos that I've created. If I have around 20 videos for viewing, is it best to create the site in Flash or Dreamweaver?

This is the way I have the code now, but I developed a glitch
as soon as I changed the code. My preloader stays caught up in a
continual load that won’t finish, and won’t advance to
the next scene. It was working before I entered any FlashVars
coding. So the Flash movie embedded in Dreamweaver stays blank.
Also, I am using the original Flash MX and Dreamweaver MX from
2002-2003. By some chance, does this earlier version of Flash MX
not recognize FlashVars? I do have the DOCTYPE as <!DOCTYPE HTML
PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> to allow any
deprecated code, etc.

Newbie Flash/actionScript3 question

hi All,
Apologies now as I am new to Flash, I have 'inherited' some flash files to incorporate into my java based web application.
The first .swf file that I am using needs to use an xml file. I can get the .swf file to open with the data from the XML file if they are in the same directory of my webapp. The previous programmer has saved the xml file to disk, copied it over into the directory where the html files are in and then it all works. I don't want to save the xml file to disk, I would rather create the data for the xml file and send it as a parameter to the .swf file. I was thinking about doing this with FlashVars.
I'll get to my problem now :-) FlashVars seem to be in name value pairs. I'm not sure what the parameter name of the XML file is in the .swf file.

I have the source .fla file and I downloaded a demo copy of CS4 Flash professional and opened it up but I can't seem to find the actionScript. Flash files are written in actionScript right?
But even if I could find the actionScript, I have an awful feeling that the .swf file simply looks for the seq_list.xml file in the current working directory, which is really not what I went. And as I can't find the actionScript I can't change the code.
Anyway, sorry for the convoluted mail. As I said I am out of my depth big style with Flash and I would appreciate any comments (and it would help get my boss off my back too :-)

You might find the actionscript in separate .as files. Beyond that, in a more basic sense, if you are not familiar with how to find actionscript in the timeline of an AS3 file, you want to find keyframes in the timeline that have lower case "a"'s in them. If you open the Actions window and select such a frame, the actionscript will appear in the window.

Pro Tools convert to Logic Newbie some simple question for logic users

Hey guys, I am a recent convert from Pro Tools! and There were just some simple questions I thought some of you may be able to help me out with. I am using Logic 9.1.1
1) After I set up a multi timbral software instrument (in this case MOTU Symphonic Library) how do I set up midi channels to trigger the individual sounds in the instrument. (in pro tools I used to create a midi track then send an output of that track to that particular soft synth)
2) How do I set up a and forgive my Pro Tools vocab but basically I want to set up a reverb channel on an aux track have it receive on a bus so I can send other tracks to that particular bus.

1) I have a nord stage and would like record via midi. In pro tools i would usually need to create a midi track with the output set the the nord and an audo aux track to hear it What would I do in order to record midi from my nord stage?
To record, just select a non-audio track, hit record and play the keyboard. The notes will get recorded into a region.
If you want to play it back to the Nord Stage as well, then it makes sense to set the Nord up as a MIDI device in your templates, so you can just add the Nord to a track and not worry about what MIDI ports it's on etc. Open the environment, create a New -> Instrument, called it "Nord Stage", set the MIDI port and MIDI channels it's on, and sav your template.
Now, when you start a song, to sequence the Nord, you just assign the Nord instrument to a track (by for instance, right clicking on a track and choosing your Nord instrument from the list of environment obects that appears).
2) The multi instrument trick is quick and easy its great but How would I do that manually?
Lots of ways, look into your key commands, ther are all kinds of "Create track with same instrument", "Create track with next MIDI channel" and so on. There are too many ways to do this to quickly talk about here. In short, all tracks have an environment object assigned to them, whether it's an audio object, or a MIDI instrument object, and this determines where the data on the track goes.
3) How do you set up midi so that it doen'ts overwrite notes when recording over them?

Flash is not supported on the iPad - and as Adobe have announced that they are stopping development on all mobile versions of it, it probably never will be.
Do the sites that you want to use have their own apps in the store ? If not then there are browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter, Puffin and Photon 'work' on some sites, but judging by their reviews not all sites.

Flash security question for flash 8

I am using flash 8.
I have a flash file that loads information from php and
mysql. It works fine in the main domain of my site
ie: www.mysite.com.au
but it does not seem to load using a domain that is parked on
the same server space.

or www.mysite.info
Should I be using System.security.allowDomain(); or one of
those crossdomain.xml files?

A crossdomain.xml file should do it. It's not the server,
lots of domains
can be on the same server.
If your Flash is on domainB.com and you're wanting to get
data from
domainA.com, you'd need a crossdomain.xml file on domainA
like so:

Newbie deployment/install question for JRC

I did some searching and reading the SDK doc, but it's mostly silent on the topic of how you set things up.
I have Crystal Reports 11 Developer edition (not Eclipse). I'd like to create a simple JSP app which displays a crystal report in a browser, on my Java app/web server. (And lets the user output/view it as PDF.)
I think I can use the JRC to use this, but, I don't know what needs to be deployed to the Java web/app server to make this happen. Can anyone elaborate on what files/directories need to be there? Where do I get them, from my Designer PC in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Business Objects\3.0\java\lib" or elsewhere?
