NEWBIE: Flex/AIR and databses
Hi all,
I'm a Director(lingo) user and use flash with actionscript
for UI in app.
I'm now playing with Flex3 to see how it compares etc.
OK, one of the things I think i'm getting confused with and
need some clarity (in not too technical terms!), is the ability to
connect to a database online(with flex) and offline(with AIR).
For example, if I have a simple database with 'name', 'age'
and 'sex', with Director I could use a simple ADO Xtra to connect
to the database and add/ammend the records. - In this example,
Director would be running as an .exe on the users PC with the
database either local or on a network. The database could be a
simple mdb (access) or sql etc.
So, is it possible to have an AIR application connecting to a
local database? and does that database have to be a specificv type?
or can it be an mdb? If so, how is this implemented?
When it's web based with flex, am i right in thinking that
flex does not actually connect to a database, but instead uses a
'third party' such as php, asp etc to do this?
As you can see, im confused!! Can someone explain in simple
terms?
Thanks everyone,
Tim
The AIR player has a built-in version of SQLList. There is a
set of SQL classes in the AIR player you can use. Check out this
article on my blog:
Using
SQL with AIR - you can download the code and check out the
database classes.

Java API for Adobe Flex(AIR and Browser)
Hello Community,
Sometime ago i started the project located at: : http://code.google.com/p/gwt4air/ , wich primary goal was to bring another approach on writing AIR application by providing a Java API for the AIR API. On top of that i added support for PDF and Excel generation using Java.
I m glad to announce that the project will now add support for the Flex Framework
I wrote a post about it on the main page.
The Idea behind it is to give Java Developers a more simple way to write Flex Application by leaveraing a swing like API.
I hope this project will be a good alternative to the MXML+ ActionScript approach and looking for people willing to join the project.

Flex/Air and Web Services/Remote Objects
If I'm calling a web service operation, either through the
mx:webservice or mx:remoteobject tags, do I need to configure my
Flex or Air project (I'm using the latest Flex Builder IDE) with
the "use remote object access service" when creating the project?
When do I need to configure services-config.xml or
remoting-config.xml?
Can't I simply call a web service operation by specifying the
endpoint (if using mx:remoteobject) or the wsdl location for the
service and then invoking one of its methods? I'm having a very
difficult time consuming a web service through either method (even
on my own local ColdFusion 8 developer instance) and need some
assistance. I've looked all over the internet for help, but, so
far, without success.
Thanks,

Flex, Air and FileSystemTree
Hi,
Here's what I want to do: create a FileSystemTree that
automatically opens all branches towards the user's desktop folder.
I also want that folder selected and furthermore, I want it visible
in the FileSystemTree. (cause a selected folder can be so far down
the tree that is isn't visible in a narrow FileSystemTree).
Any ideas? :)You do not need to specify any server to use any of the RPC

Flex SDK and AIR runtime version in mobile
Hi, guys.
I'm trying to make my first Flex mobile app.
I'm a little confused about the relationship between Flex SDK and AIR runtime versions for mobile development.
In the "Developing Mobile Applications with ADOBE FLEX 4.6 and ADOBE FLASH BUILDER 4.6" pdf document, it says:
"AIR requirements
Flex mobile projects and ActionScript mobile projects require AIR 2.6 or a higher version. You can run mobile projects on physical devices that support AIR 2.6 or a higher version of AIR.
You can install AIR 2.6 or a higher version only on supported Android devices that run Android 2.2 or a higher version. For the complete list of supported Android devices, see Certified Devices. Also, review the minimum system requirements to run Adobe AIR on Android devices at Mobile System Requirements.
Note: If you do not have a device that supports AIR 2.6 or a higher version of AIR, you can use Flash Builder to launch and debug mobile applications on the desktop."
So, I go and check the Certified devices in http://www.adobe.com/devnet-apps/flashruntimes/certified-devices.html and find that the minimun FLASH PLAYER version accepted by ALL devices is FP 10.1
1. Does this mean that if I want to release an app to target ALL mobile devices, then I can only use Flex 4.5?
2. Do support for Flash Player mean the same than support for Adobe AIR? Or the application will prompt the user to install whatever version of the AIR runtime and all of them would be supported by the device, even in the FLASH PLAYER support is for a lesser version?
Thanks!Thanks for your help, Flex harUI,
The first impression that comes to mind is that FP version is indeed only for the web browser plugin. Then, why does the official Flex 4.6 mobile development documentation have a link to that page that only speaks about the supported FP version in mobiles under the title "AIR requirements"??
This makes it way too confusing.
Do you know whether there is something like an equivalent matrix/list of mobile devices with their supported AIR runtime versions? I went a great deal in trying to keep my original app under 400kb... I didn't know that in the end it would end up weighing 9.5Mb... :S
Thanks again, -
Interactive medical report with Flex/AIR, XML, U3D and PDF
Hello,
I am computer science student and during my master thesis I want to program an interactive medical report which should include some 3D models (U3D) and which should provide the following options:
Interactive manipulation of the 3D models
Typing in a structured medical report
Loading of a XML file with additional information
Loading of medical image data (jpg images)
At best, only one pdf file as resulting report
And: A nice user interface (I like the interface elements of Flex...)
I think, the best way is a pdf file which includes all the needed data. The problem is that I don't know exactly what software combination fulfills my requirements... I read some things about Adobe Flex and AIR and the U3D format and I suppose, the great interface builder "Flash Builder 4" might be useful to generate a nice user interface. BUT: I was not able to find out, how to include U3D in Flex/AIR.
Then I found the nice pdf library iText (http://itextpdf.com/examples/index.php?page=chapters) which is able to produce a pdf file from a swf file and to include a U3D-model with an additional JavaScript file for manipulations.
BUT again: If I have a swf flash file with the nice user interface (generated with the Flash Builder), how can I access the U3D model in the final pdf document? Imagine: I click on a "rotate" button in the swf and then the U3D-Model in the pdf should rotate...
Ok, as you can see, it is a complex szenario.
My questions summarized:
What, in your opinion, is the best technology for my task? Flex? AIR?
How can I import the U3D-models? Should I use PaperVision, Sandy3D or something else?
Is there a way to save user inputs directly in the pdf file, or as new pdf file or as xml file?
What is the best way to produce the user interface? Flashbuilder, or maybe a html container with "normal" html interface elements and then the events communication between JavaScript and ActionScript?
How can I export all the stuff to one pdf document? Should I use iText?
Best regards,
StevenThanks for making my point - perfect is the enemy of good. We tolerate less capable, less perfect system that are in place now, because of the false expectation that it should be perfect. Incremental improvements are rejected, because they are not perfect. Even an imperfect algorithm can find 'Broken' as a common thread in your example, and highlight them for the clinician to evaluate their impact on the current treatment. This no less likely to miss the connection than a clinician trying to scan through handwritten notes, in the 5 - 10 minutes he/she has to interact with the patient and determine what to do.
Because of legal concerns, incremental but imperfect improvements don't get implemented, so nothing ever moves forward. Imagine if after the Wright Brothers first flight, no improvements were considered acceptable unless they completely eliminated the risk of failure - there wouldn't be any airlines to go bankrupt today!
For the most part, IT has focused on activities where 'perfect' is achievable. Accounting in its various forms have been the primary focus of most IT systems. In that area, the vocabulary is very limited, well defined, and consistent. A debit is always a debit, and a credit is always a credit. Medicine is completely different. It is much larger in scope, poorly defined, the vocabularies are mostly non-existent, and where they exist are incomplete and inconsistent. Despite the huge leaps forward in the last century, there is still more unknown than known about how and why the body works. This environment makes most individuals trained in IT uncomfortable. Until we learn how to deal with 'fuzzy', Healthcare IT is going to be limited to the billing and collection functions that it mostly accomplishes today.

Printing with Adobe Air and Flex
Hi
I have an Advanced printing application, developped using
C++. we want to port it to the web;
we are studying Flex and Adobe Air to see if we can have what
we want.
the most important thing is to be capable to
print automatically I mean without choosing printer
configuration; we want to choose automatically paper size, paper
source, ... and all possible printer configuration.
Is that possible using Flex And/Or Adobe Air?
I searched and I see that there is one class to print,
without advanced options?
If not, can I develop plugins for Adobe Air?
Thank youMy blog has an example of whats possible when printing using
Flex/AIR - you can print directly setting orientation etc. but I
can't find a way to set source (paper trays)

AIR and Flex differed about DNS Resolver?
It is an interesting problem.
The code is running well in Flex, it can send and get data from the server. but fail in the AIR(IO ERROR).

temp.wd = "125a100a125a101a";
req.url = "http://hw.baidu.com";

definitely help you out.
P.S: You can even build AIR apps from Flash (

SarithaSounds like airglobal.swc is missing in your library path. I have some tips here http://blogs.adobe.com/jasonsj/2010/03/using_the_air_2_sdk_in_flash_builder_4.html, but you might want to double check your SDK overlay: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/AIR_2:Release_Notes#AIR_2_SDK.

Example working Flex AIR app for Android?
I'm having trouble getting even the most basic AIR app working on Android. Here is the code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:WindowedApplication xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" xmlns:local="*"
width="600" height="600">
<fx:Declarations>
<!-- Place non-visual elements (e.g., services, value objects) here -->
</fx:Declarations>
<mx:Label text="Hello World"/>
</s:WindowedApplication>
It works fine running on Windows in Flash Builder, obviously it's pretty simple. Here are the commands I use to put it on a Samsung Galaxy Tab with Android 2.2.
C:\Users\Ryan\Adobe Flash Builder 4\Test2\bin-release>adt -package -storetype pkcs12 -keystore C:\Users\Ryan\STG-Android.pfx Test2.air Test2-app.xml Test2.swf
password:
C:\Users\Ryan\Adobe Flash Builder 4\Test2\bin-release>adt -package -target apk -storetype pkcs12 -keystore C:\Users\Ryan\STG-Android.pfx Test2.apk Test2-app.xml Test2.swf
password:
test
C:\Users\Ryan\Adobe Flash Builder 4\Test2\bin-release>adb install -r Test2.apk
2286 KB/s (419172 bytes in 0.179s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/Test2.apk
Success
A Test2 app icon shows up on my Galaxy Tab under Applications but when I run the app I just see a plain white screen, I don't see the words "Hello World". Any ideas? Does anyone have an example Flex AIR app that works on Android and can post the code so I can try it on my Galaxy Tab? I know AIR is installed correctly on my Galaxy because I installed an AIR app called South Park Avatar Creator that I got from the market and it works fine.
Thanks,
Ryan
P.S. Here is the Test2-app.xml from my non-working project above in case it helps. This is the default generated with a new Flex app in Flash Builder 4 using the Flex 4.1.0 AIR 2.5 SDK but I uncommented the andoid tags and set the visible tag to true.

Adobe Flex/AIR Photo Booth Software
Hi,
I hope everyone is doing well.
Is it possible to build a Photo Booth software like
http://www.photoboof.com/
http://sparkbooth.com/features/
etc. using Adobe Flex/AIR ?
I know that we can build desktop applications using Flex/AIR. But I have a very little experience in building desktop applications. Most of the times I had worked on web applications. The Photo Booth software demands to detect digital camera connected to computer/Laptop and then work on the basis of what camera captures. It is like creating a web application that works with media server and
use computer/laptop webcam. Please guide me how can I start or plan for this software.
Regards
VarunFrom What I've found.. it seems 3ivx or Perian could cause this problem. A friend had this issue and deleted 3ivx and it fixed his crashes. Alternatively, some folks are reporting that turning off 32-bit mode (Get Info) for Photobooth has also fixed, although this was already turned off in my friend's case. Or if you have iGlasses installed.

How to include different Character Sets in Flex AIR project
Hi All,
Flex, AIR(Desktop) Project.
PROBLEM Scenario:
My Application needs a path from Windows registry, So I am launching a .cmd file using Native Process API.
As a result I get a text file with the path.
So, everything works fine(reading/writing), but if the path contains different languages like Korean, Chinese then the READING OPERATION IS FAILED only when I install the application. It works fine while debugging.
(By failing I mean its not getting the characters, its printing some junk values.)
I am using readMultibyte & writeMultibyte APIs, and I am assiging the character set dynamically as per the OS language. (Which is Enslish in current scenario)
FINDING:
I installed Windows with Korean Language on a system, so now if I build the .exe on this machine then it works fine. So, i guess its not able to get the Korean Character set from the English OS, thats why it failed in earlier case.
Is there any way to include different character sets in a Flex project?
Regards,
MayankSome loaded SWFs may not be compatible with Flex. Try making a simpler SWF (like one that just draws a circle where you click) and see if it can be loaded and interacted with.
