Newbie - Gradient Save?

Hi guys,
I am using Illustrator CS3. I do not remember is there is a way of saving a gradient that i like? How do you do it?
Thanks,
S

Probably because the concept of color groups is exactly that colors and not necessarily how they are applied. Gradients are made up of stops and often have more than one color so it is not a color but method of applying a color.
However it is not a bad idea and perhaps a sub folder with in the color group of gradients could work.
The problem here is if you change the colors that made up the gradient it would change the gradient's color. So now you have lost your gradient and essentially have a new one.
It is not as cut and dry as it would appear if you see what I mean.
So now you have to have a mechanism that would allow you to duplicate the gradient swatch while allowing you to also change the colors that make up the gradient as well?
The question is how do you do such a thing?
S when you think it out there are more unknowns then there are knowns and that doing what you want not such an easy task.
It is a very good suggestion but not an easy one to do, but I am not programmer so I am really not certain if it is difficult to achieve.
It would be great if you had the gradients in a sub folder if you could then access the folder of gradients with out opening the whole color group in a new document.
A real asset it would be. Great idea!

  • Illustrator won't save when a gradient is being used...

In CS4, as soon as I apply a gradient and try to save, I get an error message. I've tried saving as all file types. I was able to export the image as a jpeg but would like the know how to fix the problem.

    Ray,
It seems that something is seriously wrong.
You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps:
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer;
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup;
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed;
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options;
If you have Windows Hasta la Vista, you should apply 2) in all cases.
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

How do I save an image (logo) transparent so that it will appear transparent on any color background such as a gradient or black?
I save image as "transparent" at File > New... but when I place on a gradient background it keeps appearing white. I'm trying to save transparent to be effective on any color such as a gradient or black.  How do I truly save as transparent?

Put the logo on its own layer set the layer fill to 0 and add a layer style to the logo layer.  Here I duped one change fill to 0 added style.

  • How to save an illustrator file that contains gradients as a pdf print file without the gradients streaking on the print

When I create files in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign if the design includes gradients and I save or export it as a pdf for print, whenever I have the file printed the gradients often come out with lines and streaks in the print. I usually work around this by copying the gradient to a file of its own, save it as a jpeg, and then insert the jpeg back into the original file before saving it as a pdf. This can be a big hassle and I was wondering if there's a setting in illustrator, photoshop, and Indesign in order to avoid the hassle.

You would have to check your color management and things like overprint settings or the ink levels of the color components. Streaking is usually a sign of areas getting oversaturated and the automatic adjustments in the printer driver being unable to compensate. and then of course other factors may figure in like banding inherent in using gradients across large areas, out of gamut issues for certain colors and what have you. You'd have to be much more specific about all of that for anyone to even begin to advise specifically...

  • Problem with Gradient Noise in "save as PDF"

I'm trying to save a design as a pdf, using the high quality print/illustrator default options. The output is generating a bunch of noise in a corner of a couple of gradients, and also some line noise where different gradients meet. I'll include a screen shot of the pdf exported as well as a jpg exported to illustrate the difference. PDF export is the only one that's generating this noise, everything else I try works fine. I've tried changing presets, adjusting the transparancy flattner settings, leaving appearances live as well as expanding them. Nothing seems to work. Any help is GREALY appreacited as I'm trying to turn this file over ASAP!

Here's an isolated piece of the AI, I exported to confirm that it has the same problem. I put the ai and pdf up on my server:

  • Why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas

I am on a IMAC and upgraded to 10.6.8 Jan 2014. I am using CS4 Illustrator to create with. When i save my work as a pdf then reopen the pdf in Ill to make changes, the whole page has:
A.) Multiple clipping paths around it
B.) Most text has now become outlined. Not editable anymore.
C.) Gradient areas have multiple clipping paths of the single gradient area
D.) The gradient areas now become rasterized.
This is very frustrating as now all of my marketing files, some 300+, are worthless. I don't know where to look anymore to find the problem.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much

    John,
I have the presets as you have shown. I had been editing the supplied items as you suggested. Then figured i should ask the questions of those who are better than I.
But still a bit confused as to why the new save places clipping paths around the document.
Thank you John and Monika for your help.

I do a save as "pdf" in the format pull down tab. I save to a folder on the hard drive. Where is the "Illustrator editability" check box? I presumed it is in Acrobat some where
but i seem to be lost.
It is in Illustrator's Save Adobe PDF dialog, which pops up before the saved file is written.

Sorry i didn't mention this, but this seems to have occurred when using images and text from provided pdfs.
That's a critical fact. If you didn't do the original save, the above is moot, and it's too late to exercise any control over the save process. Someone else failed to save for editability. The only thing you can do is clean up/repair the content, (release clipping masks, rebuild rasterized elements, expand objects, etc.), and save correctly as AI. Then, if necessary, re-save as PDF with the correct settings.

  • How to save Gradient in Swatches Panel

You cannot save a gradient in the swatches panel. You can save it as a style in the Styles panel, however.

  • Can i save a vector with gradient mesh as isolated .PNG?

    Hi,
Can i save a vector with gradient mesh as isolated .PNG?
It has some effects, so if i'm taking it out from the blue background it becomes darker.
Any advice? I need it isolated png for using it in an iOS app.
    Many thanks

I am using Illustrator CS6, on Mac.
I can't copy and paste the "cloud" into a new document to save it, because it looses the effect of those filters (since the background is no longer behind it).
Sorry if im not explaining it right, i'm a beginner in illustrator.  Can i group both the "cloud" and the blue background, to get just one shape: the realistic white cloud?
P.S: i can make a link with the .esp file of the clouds, if it helps.

  • Why are my radial gradients getting rasterized when I save SVGs?

I am using Illustrator CC 2014, for some reason I can't seem to save icons that have radial gradients as SVGs. The gradients are getting rasterized. I could do this no problem with previous versions of illustrator.

The same files? The exact same gradients?
Can you post a screenshot of those gradients?

  • Save As PNG Adds Hard Transition to Gradient

I have an image that I have created which includes a gradient with a soft transition from the light tone to the dark tone. When I save as PNG, the resulting image displays a hard transition to the gradient. How do I create a PNG image which maintains the subtlety of the gradient?

Well, I found a setting in the Save for Web dialog where the gradient doesn't show as a smooth transition:
But that's only in the Save for Web preview window -- using the browser preview button or saving the file shows a smooth transition....

  • Gradient has stripes & workflow of save as web file question

Hi! Working now with AI CS6.
I have a gradient with 3 colours, but unfortunatly you can see stripes within the gradient, like it is devided in many little steps.
Any ideas how to solve this? The gradient should be very, very smooth.
Second question concernes the workflow of saving as web file.
In AI CS5 it has been easy to scale a grafic item in its meassures in the dialog "save as web file".
Just tiping the new messures for instance 100 instead if 50 px, click an then the preview of the file in the new size appeared at once.
It changed somewhat in AI CS6, the preview doesn`t seem to work properly. Annoying!
Am I am doing something wrong?
    Help is most welcome.
    Thanks a lot!

For the first question, what is your screen resolution and number of colors being used? Please check if you're using low screen resolution of number of colors in display settings. Increase it to the best possible. On Windows 7, calibrate your display again and check.
For your second question, try pressing tab and Shift tab keys after modifying the numbers and switch between Width and Height until you see the changed preview. In CS6 the apply button was removed which is causing this issue. This has been noted in other forums as well. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4730659#4730659

  • Scan/ Save/ Burn  Newbie

This is my first post, so please excuse me if I do something wrong and the fact that it is long.
Before I start I would like to say I spent hours trying to figure things out. Only to have my head hurt. I then decided to look through posts and solved a lot of the problem . Thanks to people like Terence, Old Toad, LarryHN and all the others that take time to answer questions us newbies don't know.
My goal: to scan and save then burn my moms old photos and negatives.
I have a Imac 0S X 10.4.11 and canon 8800f scanner . Software IPhotos, Adobe elements 4.0, Adobe bridge, Photostudio.
I am not using adobe bridge( at least I don't think I am) because it will not work with IPhoto from what i have read. And I am also not using Photostudio.
This is what I have come up with. I put a photo into scanner, open MP Navigator and Scan photo. I am scanning all photos in color 300dpi including the B&W. The negatives I scan in color 2000dpi.
After scan I save the file to MP Navigator in a Tiff. I then open IPhoto and import file. Is there a better way?
Thanks to you guys I can now open Adobe elements 4.0 while in IPhoto( I spend hours trying to figure that out before I read it) and I am slowly learning about editing with filters and unmask sharp.
The Questions: I read to scan B&W in color with RGB color profile. What is this and how to change setting? I open the scanner driver to ScanGear but I can't seem to find this.
I save this photos as Tiff and import to IPhoto where I can play around with editing. I read that I should save the original as tiff and work on a jpeg, just to save space on my hard drive. Also that I should have backup files.
So If I save the photo in MP Navigator as tiff, and I import it to IPhotos as tiff. When and how do I change and save them to jpeg? After I import the photos to IPhoto should I delete the photos in MP Navigator to save space on my HD? Or do I leave them there as my backup? I understand that saving as a Tiff is better but takes more space.I am going to burn the photos to DVD so my mom can see them on tv and give copys to my family so if they want to print some they can do it themself for the DVD. Is it better to burn them as a Tiff or as a jpep or does it make a difference?
I am not that computer savy and I have not had my mac that long so please try to answer in easy to understand way.
    Thank You

    tobra:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The reason for scanning to color for the B/W files is that iPhoto doesn't not support the grayscale color mode that scanners use for B/W scanning.
I'm not sure why you're saving to tiff as it's a much greater sized file and will eat up disk space at a horrendous rate. Since iPhoto always works on a jpg copy when editing you can scan to jpg and always have the untouched copy (i.e. the digital negative) available for use if desired. If you're a professional then the tiff may have some more significance.
Here's how to use Photoshop Elements correctly with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
The reason for using the RGB color profile is that is what is used by Apple for it's printing services and what's used for the internet. Most inkjet printers will work better with the sRGB color profile.
If you're going to burn those photos to a DVD to play on a TV then the largest size needed is 740 x 580 pixels as that's what's used for displaying on TV. No need to over shoot the target. BUT you don't want to scan that small because the photos may be used for printing at some time in the future.
If you use iDVD to create your slideshows that will be played on a TV you'll want to crop the photos to a 4:3 ratio before sending to iDVD. This will fit the picture to the available TV safe area the best. You can opt to include the original full sized image file on the DVD disk along with the iDVD slideshow or just burn a DVD of the original scanned files.
Let me urge to to consider getting an external Firewire hard drive to be used for backing up your boot drive. You can use Time Machine to do the backups or use a backup application like SuperDuper (for cloning the entire boot drive or just the User folder and contents) or Synk Standard for backing up selected folders to the external with incremental backups each day.
IMO using jpgs for the intended use are just fine.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Unable to save a gradient to a swatch panel

Help,  I was always able to do this before.  (should be simple...) I made a gradient and just want to save / add it to a Swatch Panel that I've already defined and saved.  I used to be able to drag (I think) the gradient into the desired Swatch Panel and then 'save the swatch again' It won't let me do this today even though I just did it last night!  :-(
I'm working on a Windows 7 machine and I am using Illustrator CS5....
Very frustrating; any help would be super, thanks!

humm, thank you for the reply.  I'm not sure what I did last night then (and many other times, I still have others saved too)   I have a Swatch panel with all the gradients I saved for one project.  I can open a new document, call up that swatch panel by choosing to view a USER DEFINED panel with a name I saved it as...and all my gradients are right there....so I'm entirely confused now.  All I did was drag the gradient over to it and resave it???
Frustrating.  I saved 3 gradients just last night and it worked perfectly.....
Now I can't drag the new gradient over to the panel I previously saved.  When I try to it beeps at me.
In case I'm describing this totally wrong I've inserted a pic of the Panel which I've named TES GRADIENTS and even circled the gradients... there all 3 of them are.  How did I do that LOL....
