Newbie Grid Questions - Windows 2008 v11gr2

Hi all
As stated I am completely new to Oracle and have managed to do an single instance install and am now attempting a Grid and then RAC install.
I have created 2 VMs and 5 disks. During the Grid install I stamped the disks so that they could be used for ASM and put them all in a disk group called Data. I selected External redundancy.
In the previous documentation I have seen that during the Grid install you select where to put your voting files and OCR files but this never happened for me, is this correct? Also how can I check I have clusterware installed correctly? The documentation says that the verification utility runs automatically and I think this happened as the Grid install completed successfully.
One concept I am having troubles with is if the clusterware is installed as part of Grid then why do we need RAC?
My questions are probably very general and cover a lot, but any help in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
In the previous documentation I have seen that during the Grid install you select where to put your voting files and OCR files but this never happened for me, is this correct? If you selected to Oracle ASM as the storage option for the OCR and voting disk files, then the Oracle Automatic Storage Management Configuration Assistant (ASMCA) configures Oracle ASM as part of the installation process.
If you did not select Oracle ASM as the storage option for the Oracle Clusterware files, then you must start ASMCA manually after installation to configure Oracle ASM.
There are two ways of storing the shared Oracle Clusterware files:
Oracle ASM: You can install Oracle Clusterware files (OCR and voting disks) in Oracle ASM disk groups.
OCFS for Windows: OCFS for Windows is the only other supported cluster file system that you can use to storage of Oracle Clusterware and Oracle RAC files on Microsoft Windows platforms.
Starting with Oracle Database 11g release 2 (11.2) and Oracle RAC 11g release 2 (11.2), using DBCA or OUI to store Oracle Clusterware or Oracle Database files on raw devices is not supported.
Also how can I check I have clusterware installed correctly? The documentation says that the verification utility runs automatically and I think this happened as the Grid install completed successfully. You can use Cluster Verification Utility.
The cluvfy stage -post crsinst command to check the specified nodes after installing Oracle Clusterware.

One concept I am having troubles with is if the clusterware is installed as part of Grid then why do we need RAC?I do not understand what you meant with GRID is grid infrastructure (software Oracle ) or grid computing (concept).
If is concept check this..

  • 10.2.0.4 database is possible on 11gr2 grid in Windows 2008 R2 server..?

    Hi all,
can we installed 10.2.0.4 database on 11gr2 grid for windows server 2008 R2 server...?
    kindly suggest any possible cases.

    Hi Rajesh/all,
I searched lot and get conclude ie. 10.2.0.5 and later versions will support for windows 2008 R2 server. but available only 10.2.0.4. while i try to install database will get error like version not supported.
    Here is my case...
    i) My two application will support 11gr1database and rest two application support only 10gr2 database version. all application depend by only Windows server.
I installed 11gr2 grid in windows 2008 R2 server successfully.but it will not support the two applications.
consider the above and suggest to install 10gr2 for windows 2008 R2 server.

  • Windows 2008 R2, converting to dynamic disk questions

    Hello,
I have a Windows 2008 R2 server and I want to convert the drive into a dynamic disk for mirroring.  The disk currently is divided into two partitions.  The C: partition which is System,Boot, Page File, etc. and the D: partition which
is data.  The questions I have are:
Can a disk with multiple partitions be created without data loss or anything?
I know you have to reboot, but how long does it usually take to do the reboot/conversion before the server is back up?
I want to mirror the drive to a 2nd identical disk in the server, and am planning to use Computer Management.  Do I have to partition the second drive first, or will the process do it automatically?
The server is a dedicated server that is provided by a hosting company, so I would be doing it through Remote Desktop.  Can it be done that way?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You can convert the drive into a dynamic disk within both local logon session and remote desktop session. The system requires reboot twice to make the conversion take into effect. You do not have to partition the second drive.

I have read and implemented all the settings described in DOCs ID 811271.1 , ID 810394.1 and RAC on Windows Step by Step Installation Instructions.
After many attempts with the same error Ii am trying to install in a single node (RAC1). But the error looks the same, my server is clean with no oracle.
Note: For this installation I downloaded and uncompressed the files p10404530_112030_MSWIN-x86-64_1of7.zip, p10404530_112030_MSWIN-x86-64_2of7 and p10404530_112030_MSWIN-x86-64_3of7 of the oracle site.
I do not know what to do for this installation work.
    Thanks

My recommendation would be to format the disks and install Linux.
And I say that only half-jokingly. Fail-over with Windows is never as fast or as transparent as with a *NIX O/S.
As to your specific issue ... open an SR with Oracle Support. Hardly anyone uses Windows for Oracle ... even fewer with RAC ... for the reason I gave above.

  • Windows 2008 Cluster question on using a new cluster drive source from shrinking existing disk

I have a two node Windows 2008 R2 enterprise SP1 cluster. It has a basic cluster setup of one (Q:)quorum disk and data disk (E:) which is 2.7tb is size. This cluster is connected to a shared Dell Disk array.
My question is can I safely shrink the 2.7tb drive down and carve out a disk size of 500gb from the same disk and use for a new cluster disk resource. We want to install Globalscape SFTP software on this new disk for use as a cluster resource.
Will this work without crashing the cluster.
    Thanks,

  • Question about adding Windows 2012 R2 Domain Controller, into a native Windows 2008 R2 single forest domain

I current have a two server domain, both Windows 2008 R2 and fully updated.   The two servers are on subnet 10.0.1.0 /24
    - Windows 2008 R2 Server A: 10.0.1.1 (DC, GC, FSMO, DNS)
    - Windows 2008 R2 Server B: 10.0.1.2 (DC, GC)
    AD Domain: COMPANY.LOCAL
I have a second connected subnet, 192.168.1.0 /24) which is routed to the 10.0.1.0/24 subnet and I would like to install a Windows 2012 R2 server onto a server on that subnet and make it a domain controller with AD-Integrated DNS and DHCP for the 192.168.1.0
    /24 subnet.
    - Windows 2012 R2 Server C: 192.168.1.1
What are the proper progression steps, in order to bring up the Windows 2012 R2 server and then add it to my COMPANY.LOCAL domain and then promote it do a DC/GC/AD-Integrated DNS server?   Are they anything like the following:
    1. Install Windows 2012 R2 server (Server C)
    2. Point Windows 2012 R2 server DNS servers at Server's A and B
    3. Perform AD prep to extend AD schema to support Windows 2012 R2 domain controllers
    4. Promote Windows 2012 R2 server to domain controller (install local DNS service on Server C, during this step)
    * Question:  Will Windows automatically create a DNS zone for the Windows 2012 R2 subnet (192.168.1.0/24) AND also include the DNS zone from the previous Windows 2008 R2 domain (10.0.1.0 /24)?  Or will I need to add the 10.0.1.0 /24 zone to the DNS
server on Server C, even though the DNS from the Windows 2008 R2 domain is AD integrated?

    Hi,
Regarding the issue here, please take a look into below articles:

Install a Replica Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller in an Existing Domain (Level 200)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574134.aspx
Here is an example for promoting Windows Server 2012 to a DC, see:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12370.step-by-step-guide-for-setting-up-a-windows-server-2012-domain-controller.aspx
As the server is promoted to a DC, DNS Zones will be replicated and synchronized to it automatically whenever the new one is added to an AD DS domain,  bascially there is no special need to add zones,  for more information, please see:

  • Windows 2008 R2 - Question About Loopback Adapter

    Hello,
    I have the following situation:
I have two Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Service Pack 1.
I use a load balancer (Radware Alteon) in DSR mode, to load balance traffic for between these servers.
To use DSR, I have to configure a loopback adapter on each of the, with the IP address of the VIP that is configured on the load balancer.
Everything is working ok, the adapter is recognizing the network and traffic is being loadbalanced perfectly.
    The issue starts here:
I also configure a health check on the load balancer, so it can check the health of the server, and stop forwarding traffic to a server when it fails.
One of the failure conditions, is when the loopback adapter fails.
When the physical adapter fails, it is easy to recognize, because the health check, on its basic, is sent to the IP address and MAC address of the physical NIC of the server.
When it is not responding, the server is considered as failed.
However, to recognize a failure of the loopback adapter, the health check is being sent to the IP address of the loopback adapter (that is the VIP) and to the MAC address of the physical NIC.
The load balancer is doing that perfectly and the health checks are passed when the loopback is up.
However, when we simulate a loopback failure, by disabling it, the load balancer does not recognize the failure.
Instead, we just see, in the load balancer statistics, that the server response time is very high (more than 3500000 ms) but the server is up.
The check that we use is a simple ICMP ping request, and we are expecting an ICMP reply withing the specified configured period of time (that is, the timeout).
We started a sniffer catpure on the switch connected to the server.
    We saw the following behavior:
When the loopback is disabled, the server still replies to the ICMP requests, but with ICMP redirect (redirect for network)
The ICMP redirect message is sent fromt the source IP address and MAC of the physical NIC.
Then, another ICMP request is sent, and here is also a weird behavior:
The request is sent from the source IP address of the load balancer and source MAC of the server, destination IP address of the loopback adapter (that is the VIP) and destination MAC of the load balancer.
It is clear that this ICMP request is from the same "ICMP session" that was just sent, because it is being sent milliseconds after the first request and ICMP redirect reply. It is not a new health check, because a new health check will be sent after
the interval configured (5 seconds after the first ICMP request).
I don't know if this request is being sent from the server, which means that it spoofs a request from the load balancer by using its IP address as the source, or is it a request being sent from the load balancer, which means it spoofs a request from the server
by using its MAC address as the source.
My question is, if anyone saw such behavior of:
1.) ICMP redirect from the server on Windows 2008 R2 when the loopback is disabled.
2.) A seconds request within the same timeframe of the first request, not a part of a second health check.
I configued the loopback adapter properly, with the weakhostsend and weakhostreceive enabled, and with forwarding enabled (using netsh).
I tested the same topology with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 2.
On this OS, when the loopback is disabled, it just not sending an ICMP reply at all.
    Thanking in advance, Udi Dahan.

  • Grid Infrastructure installation on Windows 2008 R2 problem

    Hello there,
I tried to install Grid Infra 11gr2 on windows 2008 R2. I followed all the documentation, but i'm unable to install it. It always end with an error at the grid configuration step (OracleOHService ends unexpectedly, ohasd log says "caught exception"). I've got an SR opened, no answer for the moment ...
Did someone a least managed to install grid infra on 2008 R2 ?
It is certified, 2008 R2 is mentioned in the documentation, this is not my first RAC installation on windows (10g, 11gr1 on 2003, 2008 R1). But this time I'm totally stuck.
    PS : I love Linux.

Make sure you have the shared storage configured correctly, on either Oracle ASM or OCFS for Windows. In my testing, i used a storage cabinet and iSCSI to connect to the disks.
If you have attempted to install Grid once, then before attempting another installation, you must clean out the failed installation (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e10817/rem_orcl.htm#CHDGBBIJ) and zero out the disks used by Oracle ASM. Also, use the asmtool to mark the disks so that Oracle ASM can identify them correctly.
Also, make sure that Microsoft Clustering is disabled (and preferably not installed) on the servers you are using in your Oracle cluster.
Most of the time, a failed installation is due to the shared storage not being configured correctly, or being configured so that it works during installation of Oracle Grid, but once the server is restarted, Oracle Grid fails to start.

  • Oracle Grid Infrastructure installation on Windows  2008 SRV R2

    Hi
There are many problems to configure and install grid infrastructure in windows 2008 server. is there any step by step documentation for this case?
how can i configure the storage for OCFS, ACFS is not supported on Windows 2008 server. How can i manage OUI setup masks exactly.
Thank you for your helping hand.

Have you looked at the instructions in the documentation? http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e10817/toc.htm
If these steps are not adequate, could you explain what is missing?

  • Grid infrastructure with GNS @ windows 2008 R2

    hello!
i want to install grid infrastructure (for a 2 node rac) with gns on a windows 2008 r2 server. the dns/dhcp server is also windows 2008 r2. can anyone provide an example which ips, dns-forwards etc. i have to configure on the dns/dhcp server? i read a lot of documentation, but the installation always fails with the following message:
"GNS konnte nicht hinzugefügt werden. -- gns couldn't be added
    CLSGN-00154: Ungültige Subdomain: "ora-cluster.ki-grp.local" -- invalid subdomain "..."
    add gns -i 10.62.1.50 -d ora-cluster.ki-grp.local ... failed
FirstNode configuration failed at C:\Oracle\11.2.0\grid\crs\install/crsconfig_lib.pm line 8385."
i enter the following parameters at universal installer:
    Cluster-Name: ora-cluster
    SCAN-Name: ora-cluster-scan.ora-cluster.ki-grp.local
    SCAN-Port: 1521
    GNS-Subdomain: ora-cluster.ki-grp.local
    GNS-VIP-Adresse: 10.62.1.50
    cluster-nodes: 000srvorarn1.ki-grp.local und 000srvorarn2.ki-grp.local
    network interfaces:
    interconnect: 1.1.1.0
    public: 10.62.1.0
thx in advance and best regards,

  • Question concerning the state of licenses of a Windows 2008 R2 RDS server after disolving the Domain, the DC, and the AD.

Background: - several months back a Windows 2008 r2 domain existed with a DC, and an AD.  Windows servers where apart of this domain.  One of the servers being a Windows 2008 R2 server with Remote Desktop Services loaded.  The server was properly
licensed for 8 User CALS.  All was operating correctly.  Since that time the domain has been removed, the DC removed and the AD removed.  What is left are Windows 2008 R2 servers in a workgroup.  Again, one being the Remote Desktop Server.
Q1. Can the functioning Per User CALs (totaling 8) remain as Per User CALs?
Q2. Am I required to switch them to 8 Per Device CALs?
Referencing: "Best practices for setting up Remote Desktop Licensing...." - Article 2473823
In the above article it states under "RDS HOST and RDS Licensing servers are in the same Workgroup" that "We can use ONLY Per Device CALs in a workgroup environment. So, you should install only Per Device CALs on RDS licensing server."
( Which in my case they are both the same server.
Any information regarding what licensing options that can be used on a workgroup RDS server would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Yes, agree with the supporting article which you have commented. We can only use per device CAL under workgroup environment and if you want to use per user CAL then server need to be member of domain.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Install of grid infrastructure @ win 2008 server

    hello!
i'm a newbie on oracle rac/grid and so i think there will be an easy answer to my question. i want to install oracle grid infrastructure on windows 2008 (r2) with asm on a san storage.
i worked through a lot of tutorials, but till now i didn't manage to find the san in the "create ASM disk group" dialog (installation of grid infrastructure). i think i have to change the "discovery path", but i don't know how.
which additional information is needed so that someone can help me?
    thx in advance!
    best regards,
    christian

sorry, but i overlooked that i have to use asmtool.exe to stamp the disks for oracle asm!

  • Many dead cmd.exe on Windows 2008 R2 Oracle 11.2.0.2 RAC Installation

After successful installation of a two node Oracle RAC 11.2 on Windows 2008 R2 we investigate a daily growing number of cmd.exe all running the following statement:
    *C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe  /K D:\oracle\cluster\11.2.0\grid\bin\cluvfy  comp health -_format*
Does anyone know the originator/source of this "cluvfy" command?
    Maybe the Grid Control Agent?
We think, that the "/K" option is the problem, i.e. the reason while the cmd.exe will not terminate.
When we run the "cluvfy" manually everythings results successfully.
    Thanks for your reply.

I have done the same and get the run around from the support tech when I ask for clarification. Even asked duty manager for assistance and was sent right back to the support tech that I could not get conclusive answers to my question from the first time. Seems he is telling me that he opened a new bug up for my answer but the description of the problem is not the same so how can I believe him. He wants me to apply patch 12 but I thought the later patches set are supposed to contain previous patches, so why not apply patch 14 or newest. Seems none of the patches show that they solve the Windows Heap Issue for 11.2.0.3. Even the bug note says it will be fixed in 11.2.0.4. Just one more reason we are planning (although against my better judgement) to move away from oracle.

  • Windows 2008 Server and Windows 8 clients

    Hey Guys,
I have had this problem for sometime now and really need a solution. I have Windows 2008 Enterprise Server running about 200+ terminal services clients. All Windows XP clients are fine, Windows 7 clients have issues when they get an updated version of
remote desktop client(to solve the issue we simply rollback the update), Windows 8 clients cannot connect and use out remote app. The issue stems from the newer version of remote desktop client (on windows 7 and embedded in windows 8) cannot connect to our
terminal server and generates an error and immediately disconnects. The error says "
Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer that you want
    to connect to
So my questions are, how can i update my Windows 2008 Terminal server version to support these clients, or do u have migrate to Windows 2012? Or is there a solution to my current problem which will allow my client to connect and use the remoteapps?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Please follow the below steps and verify result.
LAN manager authentication level settings (Local security policy->Local Policies->Security Options->Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication level).
Try to change it to "Send NTLMv2 response only"
    Snap:
If still face the issue please install this Hotfix.
RDS client computer cannot connect to the RDS server by using a remote desktop connection in Windows

is it source database 32bit is in different OS platform? If not directly after installation you can upgrade the database. using DBUA
