Newbie having trouble

I'm new to Flash, Have got the new Flash 8 Pro. I'm trying to
start at the beginning with tutorials to learn how to use flash.
The first tutorial under the "getting started with flash" area is
"building your first flash application" I have gone through the
whole tutorial, made sure that I followed each step carefully, and
yet the graphics (JPG) files are not showing up in the project.
What they have you doing is making a FMA for a ficticious
restuarant website, an example of there menu to be used as a header
for the page i imagine. I have made sure that I copied the entire
folder over as requested, double checked that I don't have any
upper/lower case problems and I still don't have the images showing
up on the fla file when I go to control to test it. Any ideas what
could be wrong? Has anyone reported a problem with this tutorial,
or am I just missing something?

I did get your e-mail but I was unable to get to the forum
for a couple of days. However in the mean time I found the problem.
The project had 80 frames in it and it was set to loop, the
tutorial was telling me to set an action (motion tweens) to the key
frame 80. I didn't notice the first time around, but when starting
over with the tutorial when I applied that action to frame 80 I got
a (!) in the bottom left corner of my workspace warning me that
something was wrong. When I clicked on the (!) i got a window with
the message "Motion Tweening will not occur on layers with
ungrouped shapes or on layers with more than one group or symbol."
I'm not sure what that meant but when I removed the action
everything began to work.
I'm learning to keep my eyes open as I do these tutorials
because they have a few typos and wrong instructions in them that
for a newbie like me can cause some frustration. Thank God that
Flash has that little warning (!) that lets you know when something
is not working, I am so glad that I noticed it there!

Newbie having trouble with template highlight (button)

Stupid question I'm sure, but for the life of me I can't figure it out:
When using a template, if I change anything at all about the TYPE related to a button, or the size of the button/text group, the corresponding HIGHLIGHT gets freaky. I can't for the life of me figure out how to control where that highlight appears, or even it's size, etc. So I have these beautiful DVD menus that are marred by weird highlight bars--some of them run across two buttons.
(Yes, I figured out how to make the highlights invisible, but that defeats the whole point of course.)
Hope my question wasn't confusing. Any help would be wildly appreciated. Thanks...

Okay, let me pose a theory: Is it possible my installation is having trouble, in other words is what I'm seeing NOT normal?
Can anyone verify (it would only take a few minutes) my findings? Here are the steps: Create a brand-new project using (just to make sure we're on the same page) the Apple template called "Wedding Classical Index." Next, resize any one of the main elements (labeled "button 1," etc.). OR, change the text to two words, or modify the text size/font. When finished, hit the Simulate button and mouse over the button you modified.
Does the highlight look normal, e.g., underneath the text, etc., or has it moved to the side of the text, or changed into a vertical line, or worse?
I just want to verify that my installation isn't being screwy. Thanks to the kind soul who takes a minute to help me out with this so I can move on...

Newbie having trouble with opt/rep regions

Hi everyone. I'm migrating my site from simple, square html
to nice, elegant css. I've done most of the work, but I'm having
some trouble with templates. Here's an example of how a page
created with a template will (hopefully) look:

I've succeeded in making the article region (inside the white
frame) editable, but I can't figure out how to handle the side bar
menu. It's supposed to contain links to the chapters and
subchapters of the main article, so that clicking there will bring
you to the right place in the page (a simple # link, in other
words). However, the article writer (me) needs to be able to add as
many "SidebarLarge" entries as necessary. Under each of those there
may or may not be the need to add "SidebarSmall" entries for
subchapters.
I read the help file and figured out I need to do something
with the optional and repeating region settings, but whenever I try
I only ever manage to make a mess of the sidebar. Anyone can tell
me how exactly I'm supposed to do this?

Why not just make the whole sidebar an editable region
instead? Then you
can add as much stuff as you see fit.

Newbie having trouble with keyframes

I'm a newbie to Flash, and have just started going through
the online tutorial here:

This is the problem I'm having: In the section "Creating a
frame-by-frame animation", when I have created the symbols, and
want to edit them, the Properties Inspector shows that the images
are bitmaps, not movie clips. Why is this? Shouldn't they have
become movie clips when I created the symbols, renamed them, and
saved them as movie clips? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Did you have the bitmaps selected and chose "Modify - Convert
to Symbol" (F8) when you "created the symbols"?
Or did you select "Insert - New Symbol" (Ctrl-F8)? This would
of course have created empty movieClips and left your bitmaps
untouched.

Newbie having trouble creating a Slideshow with the Animation Panel.

I know it's a much more complicated/advanced way to create a slideshow. But, I know it can be done.
I will explain exactly what I do, the steps that I take. In my own newbie opinion, I think I'm just missing a step somewhere. Maybe I'm missing two or three steps. Hopefully somebody will be able to help me.

1.I open the program Adobe Bridge
2. Then I select all images in a folder, then I utilize the review mode & deselect the photos I do not want to use.
3. Then I open the selected images into Photoshop. (If you haven't already figured it out, I have Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended)
4. I clicked on Windows menu >arrange >Tile. That way all of my images are right there & ready for utilization. (At this point, none of the images have been clicked on yet.)
5. Then I open the animation panel & create a white blank background for the first frame.
Here is where I run into the problem. I know how to add extra frames, that's easy enough.
I also know that when I add the extra frame, it makes a duplicate of the previous frame.
My problem is trying to get that extra frame to reflect the next image I would like to display in this little slideshow and so on and so forth for the next, maybe 20 images.
Then what I would like to do is randomize the transitions with things like dissolve, honeycomb, fade in & fade out. With other options if there are any.
I would like to create a fancy slideshow is all.
I have read all of the help manuals, all 600+ pages. This is how far I got. I even did a search in the Adobe community. Even those articles don't quite tell you how to do this. So, I probably could have done a lot more homework. But. I'm starting to get frustrated with it.
Hopefully someone here will be able to help me with this. Thank you Obi-Wan Kenobi in advance. :-)

I was wondering if there was a way to add transitions, i.e. dissolve, fading in & fading out, split, reveal, random bars, vortex stuff like that.
I was also wondering if there was a random option for this.
If I have to add them in manually, that's fine with me. It would be really nice to be able to add some different transitions between frames.

Jsp newbie having trouble using JSP's with Jdev 10.1.3

Newbie having trouble with searching for apps.

I'm an experienced an experienced Windows user, finding myself surprisingly lost on my new iPad and iTunes.
(Surpising because, although I'm used to dealing with oddball and sometimes frustrating things on Windows, I had heard the Mac and iPad interface fast simpler to navigate and more frustration free.)
So please excuse what may seem like dumb newbie questions about what should be, and probably are to you experienced iTunes and iPad users, simple things:
For starters:
I'm search for a few apps in the app store that I know for sure exist and know the exact names:
One is the
iPad User Guide
The other is
the AOPA flight planner app.
I know it exists because it's installed on my wife's iPad. Can't remember how I found it on her iPad.
When I use the apps store search box (whether I do it in the app store in the iPad or in iTunes on my Windows 7 computer)
I keep failing to find them.
I've tried putting
                       iPad user guide
                        AOPA flight planner
or even just                AOPA
in the search box in both environments and clicking the search (magnifying glass) icon.
I either get a mess of apps with AOPA in the name (but not the one I want)
or a message saying the equivalent of "sorry... not found."
What the heck am I doing wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong. Those apps just do not appear to be available any more.
They will always be available to your wife since she downloaded them and they are backed up in her iTunes Library (assuming she synced it with iTunes since downloading them) but it would appear that anyone else trying to find them will be unsuccessful.
These are not dumb questions nor are they trivial concerns. The whole digital distribution method has many advantages, but you just ran into one of its drawbacks.
"Ownership" of software was always a controversial subject, but the way things are going the argument will soon be a moot point... unfortunately.

Brand-newbie having trouble with "paste into"

I am teaching myself InDesign using tutorials and just tried to use the "paste into" function unsuccessfully. I have a document with a picture of a dog (a black silhouette) and a picture of a polkadot pattern. I selected and then cut the pattern one, selected the dog, and went to try "paste into" but the option was not available. I rewatched the tutorial and it's exactly what was shown (there was a picture with a pattern that was then pasted into a black airplane photo). Any idea why I wasn't able to do it? Thanks.

This is the video tutorial I watched, if anyone has a minute to check out the part I'm trying to replicate. It is at 7:40. I guess I need to know how the instructor got the "picture" of the plane there in the first place so I can do the same with my dog silhouette. I downloaded an image of a dog and did Command D to drop it in. Forgive me if I'm using the wrong terminology...

Newbie having trouble compling and running code

Ok I bought a beginning Java book to learn. I loaded the JDK into a file c:\java\jdk1.5.0_06. Set up a folder called code at c:\java\code. Set my paths for both PATH and CLASSPATH under both user variable and system variable to c:\java\jdk1.5.0_06\bin. During compiling I had a problem with the error "'javac' is not recognized as an internal or exter..." I got that worked out. I have my party.class file in the code directory. When I try to run it using "c:\java\code> java party" I get this error. "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: party. " I ran a dir and I can see party.class. I get the same results when I run the HelloWorldApp.class also.
One thing I did try was "set CLASSPATH = "
Then I could run the HelloWorldApp.class ., but the Party.class still will not run. It gives this error "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: main"
I have read through a bunch of forums online but have not find anything to rmemdy this.

Newbie Having Trouble with MaxDate

First let me say that I am pretty new to writing code, so I apologize if I don't use the correct terminology. Now to my issue. I'm trying to write a query that will return several date fields. The problem is that there can be several instances for each primary key, so I want to see the Max Date of each instance. I've googled and googled, but I don't seem to be finding the right answer. Additionally, I have a couple of fields in particular that raise an issue. I have instances where a primary key is showing up multiple times because the Template field can have multiple entries. I can't seem to figure out how to write the code that only pulls in the Template value of A in the event an A and C are present.

Anyway, your design is wrong:
The problem is that there can be several instances for each primary keyThat is NOT possible. A primary key is a unique value. It is impossible, if you create the PK properly, to have more than one instance. So, you probably mean something else, but ask this in the SQL forum.

Newbie having trouble with iCloud

Hello-
I was at the Verizon Store today for 3 hours trying to learn the basic of the iPhone 5. There is a lot for me to learn, but one day at a time. For some reason I was able to use my iTune sign-in info for an App that required it and I can sign into apple.com/support and apple.com to get to the forums, but when I try to sign into icloud it keeps telling me that "Verify Your Account" This apple IDs email address cannot be verified. Change your Apple ID's email address at appleid.apple.com to sign in to iCloud."
If I change my iCloud email address will this mess up me being able to sign into iTunes and the other places I use my Apple ID?
Is the Apple ID the same as the iCloud sign-in information? It says under iCloud. Apple ID and Password. I have tried it literally 30 times and it still will not sign me in.
should I change my Apple ID or does anybody know what the hang-up could be? Occasionally I have had an issue signing in to apple.com/support where it has said you cannot use an email address, but I click sign in again and it signs me in. I have had the same apple ID and password for years with no issues really until I got this iPhone and tried to sign into iCloud.

I never had this problem. I went to the apple support page for setting up icloud and it said to use the same info you use to sign into itunes. I realized that one had my email address as minus the @gmail.com and one had it added at the end. I just added it to the one that did not have it, clicked slect and agreed to the terms and I got an email saying Welcome to the icloud. then i used what I had already put in the iPhone 30 times and this time it accepted it. therre were so many people at the Verizon store trying to figure this out.
It asked me now if I want my contacts and all to go the the Cloud? I selected Yes, was that the right thing to do?
So what does this allow me to do now because it obviously did not affect me getting into iTunes or the App Store like the support article said it should. the article said it is BEST to have the same Apple ID for iTunes, Icloud, etc.
It is now saying 5 GB Free and under that payment information. Does sending the stuff I clicked Yes to cost?

Newbie having trouble updating Camera Raw

OK, so I just bought myself Photoshop CS5 and a Canon Eos 550D. Took my first pictures using RAW format and try to open them in Photoshop - it says "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw".
Figure (afer a bit of digging about that I need to update my Camera Raw - I have version 6.0.0.205 and the latest seems to be 6.4 (my camera files are showing as CR2 whatever that means). I go to Help>Updates and it says "The update server is not responding. The server might be offline temporarily or the firewall settings may be incorrect. Please try again later."
It also says that the last check for updates was 5th May which was likely the day I first loaded the software. I have no idea what the internet/firewall settings should be. So anyway then I go online to download the update directly from the Adobe site. It downloads ok but when I try to run the .exe file (AdobePatchIns...) it says "Error loading Updater workflow".
So now I 've run out of ideas,can anyone help me? And I'll apologise now if this all explained somewhere - I couldn't find it.

I tried running Photoshop as Administrator but still get the same message as above when I go to Help/Upddates.
I'm running WIndows 7. I have Eset Nod 32 antivirus and my firewall settings will be whatever comes standard with Windows and/or Eset.
I tried temporarily truning off both the Windows firewall and the antivirus (one at a time) but still had the same problem.
I notice that the message says "internet or firewall settings may be incorrect" - is there anywhere where it says what the settings should be.

Newbie having trouble with M-Audio Interface

I'm probably overlooking something obvious, but I cannot get my M-Audio FireWire 1814 to be recognized by my Mac, I've reinstalled the software multiple times and still it tells me that there is no device. (I've been careful not to hot-plug the FireWire connection). Here's my setup: IMac, (running OS X.4.8), Logic Express, M-Audio FireWire 1814, and Korg Trition Studio. I'd appreciate any help.

i don't think that is what the org poster meant. i think they were meaning that he hasn't blown his firewire connection, and that he is letting the m-audio driver load at startup.
i don't think that it had anything to do with m-audio being hot plugable.

Newbie- having troubles with background color when opening new document

It looks like the Grids are enabled.
If in photoshop you go to View>Show and click on the word Grid, does that make a difference?

Newbie having trouble w/flash

Hi: I'm new to web design and Dreamweaver ( Dreamweaver CS3 )
I've created an swf flash video, loaded it correctly
( as far as I can tell ) and nothing but a white box appears.
It doesn't play in browser preview or when I upload it to the host
site. It is frustrating but there must be something simple that I'm
forgetting?

Looks as if you either didn't upload the skin file (a .swf
that is
created for the video control buttons) and the .flv file, or
you
uploaded them to the wrong place. SkinUnderPlay.swf MUST be
uploaded to
the the same folder as your html file, but the .flv can go in
your
flash folder.
Also, since your Web server is Microsoft-IIS/6.0, there is a
chance
that it hasn't been setup for the .flv mime type. I would
think a
college in Berkeley would have that setup by now, but it
might be worth
