Newbie, Help! iTunes won't play or import random files - no error message

Have a large library of MP3 files created with Real Audio. All played well in Real Audio or Windows Player. I did a complete unintall of Real Audio, installed ITunes, and while it accepts some of the songs(files), it doesn't accept others. It seems utterly random. There are no differences between the files. All are legit. I do not get an error message, but NOTHING happens no matter what method I employ to play or import the song/file. Have compared file attributes via properties and there is no difference. Itunes is the default player, and I have not reinstalled Real Audio. I just listen to the songs on computer while working, but thought I would try Itunes and get an IPod. Not off to a very good start.

I suppose Real Audio was used, though for sometime I used Iomega to store them on zip disks. It has been a long time. For the CD's that I have on hand, I have been doing what you suggested. This is not easy, as the old files were just all together in one file, and while I thought I had changed settings so that iTunes would do the same (after learning that iTunes puts things in lots of different folders - especially confusing for me with soundtracks with different artists)the last one I did was put in folders entitled unknown/unknown with only track numbers. And if I change anything using explorer, I have to find each file for iTunes again. I'm still struggling, not understanding how these mp3 files are different in some way. Some are from the same CD's. At any rate, now that I am (found your term) ripping these CD's again, is there a way to avoid all the folders and layers of folders? Thank you for your patience. Obviously when my daughters were here to help, me being green was not a problem@

  • ITunes won't play or import my burned CD

iTunes won't play or import my burned CD, this CD is not dirty, plays in my car's CD player and I just imported a purchased CD without issue.  When I try to import the burned CD (which is one 50 minute track) iTunes imports the track in under a second, but when I try to play it, it flashes in the now playing window for a second before going away.  This has never happened before, I just updated iTunes which never seems to do any good, hope someone can help me out!

That is a format compatible with iTunes.
Can you drag the file to the Desktop and then play the tune with QuickTime?

  • ITunes won't launch and I get a strange error message-

My iTunes will not launch and I get this strange error message: The iTunes application could not be opened. The disk could not be read from or written to. But I have no problems with the disk it is on, which is my harddisk. Help, help, help…

I have now tried a billion things: None of them work. I still get the same error message, when I try to launch iTunes after logging into my user profile. However, I can launch iTunes 6.0.1 if I create another userprofile on my computer and log into that. But that isn't very helpful. I have also tried removing iTunes 6.0.1 and installing iTunes 4.7 instead. I can actually launch that. However, I cannot connect to the iTunes music store using iTunes 4.7 nor can I play any of the music purchased from the iTunes music store. What am I to do, except curse Apple for creating a version of iTunes that many people seem to have problems with?

  • ITunes won't add or import new files

I am running mountain lion 10.8.2 and my system is fully updated.I have my itunes library on an external drive but I am unable to add new files to iTunes.  I have tried dragging and dropping and the plus appears and when I release the files I get the color wheel for several seconds but it does not get added.  The same happens when I try going through the menu and cmd+O.  I can download new items from iTunes but nothing can be imported.  I am at my wits end and can't figure out what is going on.

Update: this appears to be the solution, though not for the faint-hearted. The problem was a bad iTunes Library.itl file.

This solution worked for me, but my Time Machine let me down and I had to go back to a much earlier library file.

It's a common problem that some users have after installing the most recent iTunes. Download and install again iTunes 11.0.3 to solve that problem > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1614

  • Itunes/ Playlists backup/ Cannot import xml file./error message (50)

    Hello there,
My itunes crashed so I'm trying to reinstall it. I do have a huge library, (>50K tracks) and have manual backups, but cannot using the library auto save since it would mean more than 100 dvd .
I copied all music files to external hard drive. I've exported my library to get the xml file to backup all my playlists.
    I've reinstalled Itunes.
I've added folder to the library to get all my tracks and it worked.
Surprinsingly, all my playlists appear in Itunes, but they are all empty.
I've used import list function to get the xml file and playlists but get constantly this message :
"il est impossible d'importer le fichier bibliotheque itunes
une erreur inconnue s'est produite (-50)"
Impossible to import the itunes library file, unknown error appeared (50)
I've tried with older xml files (maybe 5 or 6 old ones) and it's always the same. What are the solutions to get my playlists back ?
I guess the problem would probably come from itunes version conflict (between 8 9 or 10). Should I try to get an old version of Itunes, compatible with my xml file ?
Is there a way to convert my xml file in another format so that Itunes can read it ?
This is the only huge weakness of this amazing software.
    Thanks.

This bug did in fact appear for many of us when we upgraded to iTunes 7.3.
Here 's a lengthy thread that discusses some possible solutions.
For what it's worth, I uninstalled 7.3 and rolled back to an earlier version of iTunes.

    Hello, huskertitan.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the original location from where iTunes was accessing your media has changed.  Below, this article may help you locate your missing media.  If the missing media was purchased from iTunes, the article will also show you how to download your past purchases.

  • ITunes won't let me import audio files to my library

I try and drag a song from my music file into iTunes and it just doesn't do anything. I've also tried File > Add file to library but that still doesn't work.
It doesn't give any sort of error or anything. Just doesn't do anything at all.

That is the usual reaction when iTunes encounters a file that it finds to be incompatible. Assuming it is a valid MP3 that works in other players, the problem can usually be corrected by treating with a 3rd party tag cleanup program such as MP3 Validator.

No thats not right, iTUnes uses parts of quicktime to play audio and video. You need to go here and download the stand alone version of quicktime. Now apple has recently changed this page to include quicktime with iTUnes and then qwuicktime only. get the one WITHOUT iTUnes,

  • ITunes won't open, and doesn't give any error message

Whenever I try to open iTunes (7.0.2, if that matters), my system tray shows a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point, and iTunes fails to open. The icon shows no message when I hover over it, and if I click on it, it vanishes. I deleted iTunes, reinstalled it, restarted my computer, and all that jazz, but the problem remains absolutely unchanged. I tried creating another user account and opening iTunes on that account, and it works, but obviously, abandoning my current account is not an ideal solution. I don't have the first clue what's going on, or why, or what the yellow triangle icon is. I need help!

Are you having the same problem with Quick Time? I was having the same problem with both Itunes and Quick Time, and I removed and reinstalled, and it was still happening, until I notices that I had an older version of Quick Time still in the program files. After I removed the older version of Quick Time, and then reinstalled Itunes, the problem disappeared.
