Newbie in Solaris

hye all .. i'm new with this new solaris server . is there any specific language i need to master in order for me to operate the server . my company is using solaris 9 platform . if there is any god book for me to read please do suggest .. thanks all

i take it you mean something from: perl, c, c++, shell programming, etc? that is somewhat dependant in my view on what you want to master with the os. do you want to be able to manage users, security, applications, develop products, etc? quite a few tasks you may want to learn or need to understand do not require mastering much outside of command line syntax. others it would be helpful to understand shell programming (like reading some service startup scripts and understanding whats going on).

has lots of info. amazon has quite a few books on solaris, and there are many sites and books on perl/c/c++/etc...

• Newbie to Solaris 10

Hi all,
I have just completed my course in Solaris 10 System Administration.
I am planning to give the Solaris 10 Certification Exam but I am not able to understand from where to start.
Please guide...me
Thanks in advance...
Also, I am planning to develop a website using JSP/JSF.
Pls guide...

Here is a link to the Solaris 10 documentation that explains how to configure IPv4:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23823_01/html/816-4554/ipconfig-1.html#scrolltoc
Make sure you check the interfaces with # ifconfig -a and see if they are marked as IPv4

• Newbie to Solaris - which hardware to use?

We have just taken on a new service contract which includes a number of Sun Workstations running Solaris 9. As a tech support engineer who doesn't know Solaris, I need to teach myself the basics pretty quickly. I need to install Solaris 9 on a laptop - should I install Solaris for x86 onto one of our old Dell's, or is there any reason to buy a SPARC processor based laptop? Any advice gratefully received.

If you already have Solaris 9 x86 CD/DVD inside your company, there's no need to buy a Sparc laptop. Otherwise, these CD/DVDs are no longer available for download, you would need to download either the latest Solaris 10 (which I would recommend for you), and keep in mind, that that might contain newer things, which won't or aren't available on Solaris 9. Or even really be forced to buy a Sparc based system. I don't know, if there still are sparc-based laptops available...

Hi;
The Message ID: SUNOS-8000-0G indicates errors detected by the Solaris kernel required immediate reboot to preserve system integrity.
This error event could be caused by a hardware fault, such as a defective component or firmware incompatibility, or a software event, such as a bad patch, misconfiguration, or downrev device driver. This list is not an exhaustive list of possible reasons for the reboot, but merely some suggestions as to why it took place.

• Hardware Probe in Solaris 10

I am newbie in Solaris 10. After installing this operating system I couldn’t find out any hardware browser or hardware probing software. So I don’t know exactly which hardware did it probed or recognized.
Another problem is that how can I understand whether it recognizes my LAN card and modem?.
Would anyone please explain the whole thing?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The minimum requirements are:
# Minimum of 256 MB of physical RAM (or 512 MB for PXE booting)
# Minimum of 2 GB of available hard drive space
There are more details available at:
http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/specs.jsp
Take a look at the Hardware Compatability Link at the above link to check if the x86 system that you are using is supported, and what its individual requirements are.
Hope this helps

• Problem occured with installation Solaris 10 on x86!

Hello all!
I am a newbie with Solaris, please help me to resolve this problem following:
I setup successfully Solaris 10 on my PC, during the processing, I did not choose value option for DHCP (Option No), then, the host name was unknown
I set the name for NFS as Ora9i. But when my Solaris operating system startup, it request login console. I tried to test with host name "unknown", password correctly, but I did not log in console or XWindows.
How do I do now?
Thank you!

(I am not sure that the install process has been the correct one)
anyway:
at the console login prompt you have to write the superuser name and its password... not the name of the host.
login: root
password: rootpassword

• No syslog after enable ipf in Solaris 10

Hi,
As I'm newbie in Solaris, I just configure firewall by using IPF in solaris 10. Firewall is working well except I can't see blocking IP address and port number in syslog.
Please let me know how can I see "block in and out" IP address.
Jon

Hello,
You need to define "log" option also in your ipf.conf file.
For ex:
log in all
block in log quick on qfe2 proto icmp all
HTH,
Prabu.S

• Problem with hostname Solaris 10

I am a complete newbie to Solaris. I purchased a Sun machine with 9 on and upgraded it to 10 without many problems apart from not geting the network to work.
On the install of 10 I was asked for domain name and hostname.
Following much differing and I would say incorrect advice on setting up network on 10 gathered from these pages I used the sys-unconfig to try to get the network to work each time with no problem.
Following advice to create 3 files dhcp.le0, hostname.le0 the last one I forget I rebooted. On reboot there were a number of problems and nothing loaded I removed the files rebooted and then did a sys-unconfig.
Eventually I got the network to work but I had lost the hostname even with placing it is hostname.hme0 and rebooting. I sys-unconfig a number of times but was not asked for the hostname as on previous occasions.
I then went for a total new fresh install but I was not asked for a hostname on trying to use sys-unconfig to install the hostname it somehow on reboot would not load the screen.
I am as typing this on another fresh install of 10 but I have not been asked to give the hostname or domain. This implies when the new install runs it will be as "unknown".
Can anyone point me in the right direction to getting a hostname now that I have cracked the network and Samba.
It appears in my very limited knowledge of Sun and Solaris that the hostname and domaon name are not part of a new software install but are read by the software from somewhere else otherwise why should it miss out on these two crutial pieces of information.
Your help would be much appreciated

Put the desired hostname in the /etc/nodename file, then edit the /etc/default/dhcpagent file and remove "12" from the PARAM_REQUEST_LIST which can be found in the bottom of the list.
The /etc/nodename controls the hostname of the machine, the dhcpagent file instructs your DHCP agent what information it should get from the DHCP server, 12 indicates that it should ask for a hostname, if no hostname is found it will use "unknown".
Personally i'm not much in favour of sys-unconfig, but ive also noticed that a lot of people here likes it..

Port: 3F0-3F1,3F2-3F3,3F4-3F5;IRQ:6;6JDMA:2
Most surprisingly, the installation worked!!!
However, if anyone understands what the above means, its implications or other important information, I'd like to hear it and its workarounds if any.
On my newly purchased Pentium 4, I had to first remove my Ethernet card to prevent system boots during installation. My problem is that I have some hardware conflicts.
I have a "15 LCD monitor from LG.
Display adapters: ASUS vn179 DDR v28.32
GeForce 4 MX 440 64 MB BV17 Internal (MV)
I think that these two are causing the problem.
As a result, I cannot install Solaris with the windowing system.
I cannot see these types when choosing hardware devices.
Please advise on this matter.
I tried choosing some other hardware from the configuration list but the installation halted.
Am I doomed with this computer not having Solaris on it?
Last is a matter of Solaris residing on a single harddisk with other OS.
I want to have Solaris, Redhat Linux 7.3 and Windows XP Professional.
In what order should I install the OSs?
Is it recommended to make partitions before any of the above installations take place?
Which OS should go into each partition if it makes a difference?
P.S.
I'm a total newbie to Solaris and plan doing some Java programming on it.
So using a GUI is absolutely essential to me.

Hi TH,
You can install UPK server with WS 2008 R2 SP1 without any issues(may it be standard or enterprise edn.). Oracle database 11.2.0.4 can be used as well.
You can refer the installation guide for version 12.1 incase you have any queries.
You would only need to open the database port(eg 1527) or so on the subject server. There are no other specific port opening requirement on the firewall (port 80 must be open as well, but mostly it is not blocked on servers).
Let us know if you have any further queries or if you have any issues.
regards,

• Solaris 8 and sys-unconfig problem

I have an older Solaris 8 E450 machine that I wanted to rejoin to a different domain etc...so I used sys-unconfig but now am experiencing major problems! I need some help;
What happened was after the machine rebooted, it prompted that it was discovering the network then came to the Solaris Installation screen but with garbed options. I could make out "F2 to continue" tried to hit it to continue but the terminal keyboard was locked. After waiting about 15 minutes with no change in system state, I rebooted.
Now when the machine boots I get as far as Sun Copyright info, then get the message "INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx" then the text runs off the right hand side of the screen and the machine 'stops'. The only way to get back to the ok prompt is to 'break'. I am a relative newbie to Solaris so any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated, I really do not want to re-install...
Thanks in advance!
Ernie

On some systems, especially if you are using a VT you have to press and hold esc&2 before it will proceed, but regardless of this, my advice would be to
1) boot in single user mode (ok>boot -s)
2) cd /etc (#cd /etc)
3) rm ./hostname.<interface> (eg hostanem.hme0)
4) reboot
You should now have a system that has started without network traffic. Change all relevant netwokr files (/etc/hosts, /etc/netmasks) and you can now config a new device. To do this just vi the /etc/hostname.<interface> (as above) and enter a hostname, add this hostname to your /etc/hosts file and remember to put the tab betweeen entries, and reboot again, should be cool.

• Update connection and Solaris 10 release 1/06

Hello,
I am newbie in Solaris administration.
I installed Solaris 10 x86 release Jan 2006 (sol-10-u1-ga-x86-v*-iso.zip) and I can see and run Sun Update Manager.
Do I need to install updateConnection-i386.zip also or it's the same as Update Manager included in Jan 2006 release?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your reply.
Does updateConnection-i386.zip have more features then Update Manager I see just after Solaris 10 installation?
I plan to update Solaris machine from local logon only.
Will Update Manager be enough for that?
Thanks for your support.

• Cannot start solaris after successful installation. Monitor Screen blinks

After installing solaris 10 U 3 when it starts. The login prompt comes. Then it automatically tries to start X and the monitor starts blinking. Thereafter there is nothing i can do instead of restarting my computer.
My concerns are as under.
1. Is there a way to stop the solaris from automatically starting X.
So that I can log on into console mode.(In linux i just have to add 3 to the kernel parameters in grub.)
2. And, a procedure to change the graphics resolution that matches my HP5258 monitor.
I tried to start the solaris in failsafe mode but then I was unable to run the kdmconfig or any other command searched from the internet.
I am a newbie to Solaris.
Any help will be appreciated.

If no console is attached, you should be able to login via ttya.
Default resolution for many slightly older Sun systems is a "weird" one. 1152x960x67hz IIRC? Causes some monitors to go goofy :)
As far as setting the resolution, depends on your system. Older SPARC systems use m64config which is real easy to configure. If you've got an x86/x64 system, I think you're stuck using kdmconfig which can be a bit difficult to deal with at times...
