Newbie - Just bought the Airport Extreme

Just bought the Airport extreme and as soon as I loggen in, it asked for a password. Now I didn't get a chance to create a password so can assume that this is a used product and how do I go about resetting this password?
Thanks for all your help.

  • I just bought the AIrport Extreme to replace an older Linksys wireless g router. But I am still getting a fairly low signal, not showing much improvement from the previous router. What gives?

I just bought the airport extreme router to replace my older linksys g router because of a poor signal. Now that I have the new router running, I'm not seeing much improvement from the previous router! What gives?

I too recently bought the Extreme to replace an old Linksys G and discoverd that the range of the new Extreme was surprising less than the Linksys.
Nothing had changed otherwise; both routers were installed in the same place (on floor, under a cabinet in the middle of my house).
I returned the Airport Extreme to Amazon and bought another (the latest version), and the same problem exists, i.e., I can't get a signal at the corners of my small home with the Airport, where I once could with the Linksys.
I'm puzzled, but think that difference must be that the Linksys has 2 large external antennas and the Extreme's antennas are mounted internally.
I've also noticed that Apple sells a wall mount for the Airport Extreme and am assuming this is to get the Airport up and out into the open in order to improve its 'send and receive' characteristics, no?
If your Extreme is hidden in a cabinet or under some piece of furniture, I suggest you move it into the open and see if this helps extend its range.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have a Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 GHz/6GB RAM/500GB HDD/Superdrive PowerPC Desktop and just bought an Airport Extreme card for it.  The card is recognized but will not see the in-house network.  This is a pre-intel computer.  Do I need an antennae?

Please check out the following Apple Support article to see if your particular Power Mac model supports an external Wi-Fi antenna.

Think you need to provide some more details about what you are connecting

  • I just bought an Airport extreme.  I was told I can attach it to my modem/router (one unit) via ethernet cable.  When I use airport utility it tells me the device is not connected or found.  Any input?

I just bought an Airport Extreme.  Sales rep told me I could plug it into my existing modem/router (one unit) from isp. vie ethernet cable and it would speed up my internet.  When I open airport utility it tells me device is not connected yet my internet still works.  Was the rep wrong about speeding up my internet or is it not compatible with my isp unit?

Sales rep told me I could plug it into my existing modem/router (one unit) from isp. vie ethernet cable and it would speed up my internet.
Sorry, but this is not correct. Your Internet connection speed is established by the plan that  you have with your Internet Service Provider. The AirPort Extreme will not "speed it up".
Unless there is some special feature that the AirPort Extreme provides that you need, adding another wireless router...when you already have one.... is not going to buy you anything.
The AirPort Extreme is compatible with your modem/router if you want to continue to try to hook it up.  It will really help if you have a Mac for the configuration as the Windows Firewall often blocks connection and configuration attempts.

  • I bought the Airport Extreme because I thought it would increase the range of the WiFi signal in my house. I have a DSL modem (also Wifi) and there are parts of the house that do not seem to have a strong Wifi signal.

I bought the Airport Extreme because I thought it would increase the range of the WiFi signal in my house. I have a DSL modem (also Wifi) and there are parts of the house that do not seem to have a strong Wifi signal. The Airport Extreme does not seem to be increasing my Wifi signal strength? Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong? I am able to connect to it, etc. Just thought the strength would be better.

The broadcast power of all wireless routers and devices is limited by law.....and all manufacturers run their routers full blast.....so the relative signal strength of wireless routers from one manufacturer to another will tend to be remarkably similar.....despite the fancy advertising claims.
You may want to consider adding another AirPort Extreme to "extend" the signal strength in your home. If you decide to do this, the "extending" Extreme would normally need to be located at a point that is approximately half the distance from your "main" AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.

  • I bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Wifi

I bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Wifi from the Apple store in West Edmonton Mall Canada got to the airport, customs scanned the box (which was unopened) and they got a dangerous chemicals hit on the unit. No need to say what else happened there after, i was skinned inside out, body search, drill with the 21 questions and on top that they want to know if i have any ties with any terrorist organizations.
Why would this device give off such a reading?

    It doesn't.
The box may have been handled by someone with unclean hands. Or, their security equipment may have been miscalibrated. Or, they're just incompetent. Don't you feel safe?

Just bought new AirPort Extreme did everything on manual and light still flashing amber , it is connected to an Arris TM822 from optimum cable company , help please

Any luck with the suggestions mentioned by Bob Timmons?
I am having pretty much the same issue.
Got a new modem Arris SB6141 and a new Airport Extreme ME918LL/A. Activated with my ISP (Comcast). Worked with a savy tech who knew the modem and Airport Extreme. Ensured all items were correct from the ISP side.
I follow the instructions as indicated for Airport Extreme by it fails to detect the internet and dns servers. Comcast suggested I call apple. Reading posts above I will:
    -Reset the airport extreme
    -Unplug the modem for 30min
    Airport Utility 6.3.4 (634.17)
Airport Extreme ME918LL/A Firmware Version 7.7.3
    MBP - Yosemite Mid 2012
    Appreciate the assistance folks.

  • Recently bought the airport extreme , was able to get my Mac book connected and working , I'm

Hi guys , I recently bought the airport extreme router I was able to get my mac working , but my I phone and a laptop doesn't wirelessly connect ..
I have sat for hours trying to figure it out no luck.
Can I get some assistance ? Very much apprecIated

I had a similar problem, wasted an evening on it. If your service is working on the big Mac, but not the laptop, then try this. Connect an Ethernet cable between the Airport and the laptop. On your laptop, open your Network Preferences. Ethernet should be hilited on the left. On the right be sure your network name is showing in that bar. Wait.
Open your browser and see if you can connect to an Internet site. If successful, then go back to your Network Preferences window. Click on Advanced. Then click on TCP/IP. Note the IP address and the Router address there. Now disconnect the ethernet cable from the laptop.
Now return to the first Network Preferences window and hilite Airport on the left. Then click on Advanced. Next click on TCP/IP. Then click on Configure IPv4: to say Using DHCP with manual address. Now you should be able to write that "noted" IP address in the space.  Click on DNS and add the "noted" router address in the column on the left by using the little + beneath the column. Be sure to click OK or Apply on the screens when you make changes. Now go back to your first Network Pref screen. Does the hilited Airport say it is connected? Try your browser, can you access the Internet? This is what worked for me.

hi I just bought the airport express, plugged it in and opened my airport utilities on my macbook and it doesn't seem to recognise  it anyone have an idea what I should do?

If you are trying to configure the AirPort Express using wireless, you must first log on to the wireless signal that the Express is broadcasting to establish a connection.
Look for a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx where the "x" could be a number or letter. No password is required to log on.
Most folks find it easier to temporarily connect using an Ethernet able as stic suggests in his post....if you have one handy. Once the device is configured, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable.

  • Just bought an AirPort Extreme, in need for some help/suggestions.

    Hello all.
Just purchased an AirPort Extreme today, very excited about it as my old router was getting worse and worse.
Just finished setting up the basics of the extreme right now, set up the network name, password, and all that.
I obviously know this is a DualBand router, and want to take advantage of it!
    I have two main questions...
    1.  How do I exactly set up the "two" different networks?
    2.  I wanted help/suggestions on what devices I should connect to what network to get the best performance out of it.
My list of devices in the household:
    - 2012 iMac
      - (2) 2008 Unibody MacBook's.
      - iPad
      - A few iPhones
      - Apple TV
      - PS3
Most of the time we have two of the Mac's running at the same time, as well as a few iPhones connected based on who's home or not.
For my Apple TV and PS3, I love to get the best performance possible... Therefore I usually have those running a wired connection to the router.
Any kind of help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm pretty computer friendly, just want to know the best ideas for the best performance!
    Thanks again.

    1.  How do I exactly set up the "two" different networks?
Do exactly nothing. By default, both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands are already broadcasting a signal with the same wireless network name.
    2.  I wanted help/suggestions on what devices I should connect to what network to get the best performance out of it.
Do exactly nothing. Wireless devices will automatically connect to the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band based on their capabilities (an older iPhone cannot connect to 5 GHz, for example)...and...the relative distance between the wireless device and AirPort Extreme.
If you have newer devices that are capable of connecting using 5 GHz, they will connect at that frequency if they are in the same room or close proximity to the AirPort Extreme.  If you walk your laptop a few rooms away, it will probably connect to 2.4 GHz, since those signals are much stronger than 5 GHz signals.
The point is, you do not need to be concerned about this. Devices connect to the best signal quality automatically.

  • Just switched to Airport extreme, now in the mornings I am not connected??

    Hello group..
I am hoping this is a setting somewhere. I have had my Imac for a year now, connected via Buffalo wireless router. We just upgraded and bought the airport extreme and implimented a password (didn't before cause we live in the stix and the buffalo was complicated to set up) All works fine but when I get up in the morning to check my mail the connection has dropped (wireless bars are gray) I click the bars and it shows my airport connection, I choose, it connects and off we go. Any idea why it is not reconnecting automatically? I understand it must be losing it's connection for some reason in the night (odd it never happens during the day) but shouldn't it automatically reconnect? It's the only signal that it is seeing (no neighbors) I do have interference robustness checked (not sure what it means but it sounds good)
    Ideas?
    Thanks all!
    John

Perhaps you will find a solution in KB 304482, Mac OS X 10.4.8: AirPort does not auto-connect to existing networks after restart or wake from sleep.

  • Speed on the Airport Extreme

Hi I have a Macbook running Leopard. Everything runs well. Ever since I bought the Airport extreme WIFI N router my connection speed to the connected external hard drive is rather slow.....
    Here is what i do....
I have a 250gig Mybook connected to the Airport extreme. On the airport utility settings, if I set it to only N wifi the speed is very slow. So i have to keep it on the multiple settings (b/g/n). According to my Macbook, when I have the multiple settings the speed is 130 mbs but if it's on only n then it's 300mbs.
So my question is, why is the connection faster when it's on multiple settings then when it's on just N?
is there a fix for this?

Leopard Ron, Welcome to the discussion area!

I'm confused by your question. Your first statement says that it is faster (300 Mbps) in 802.11n only. Your question seems to indicate the opposite.

  • Unable to map a disk drive connected to the Airport Extreme

I just bought an Airport Extreme and connected a disk (Iomega Minimax) though the USB. I can see that the disk is connected (in the AirPort tool, and I can manually map it on my laptop (XP) using the IP-adress. Unfortunately I also have a PC (also an XP) connected to the Airport via an ethernet-cable, and here I'm unable to map the drive. Please help me fixing the problem. Thanks.
