Newbie just switched over to mac

i just got my 1.83 mbp and connected my external hdd to it. everything seems to be fine except for a folder which contains a bunch of music videos. for some reason on the mbp it shows the folder to have nothing on it. when i stick the hdd back onto my windows laptop though everything seems to be in order. any help would be appreciated on what i can do to make it show up on the mbp.

In what format is the HDD formatted? If the HDD is formatted using NTFS that could be the problem. Are there other files on the HDD that you can access via the MBP?

It let me back it up on the new Mac, and transfer purchases, but I'm worried about syncing it. I won't lose contacts/photos I've taken/messages, correct? And as for apps, if I transferred the purchase, will it keep all my app data there? I don't wanna lose my Tiny Tower ):

    Yes, yes.

  • I just switched over to a Mac

I just switched over to a Mac computer. I was using Adobe Creative Suite CS3 on my old windows laptop. How do I download CS3 on my Mac? Can I download the trial and use the same serial number?

You cannot use your CS3 software on your Mac unless you run Bootcamp, Parallels, Fusion or similar software to allow you to run Windows on your Mac. You can crossgrade to the latest version of CS 4 on your Mac. It it not possible to crossgrade to CS3 Mac since it is no longer available for sale. You will need to fill out a form available from Adobe to certify that you destroyed your disks that run under Windows.

    Best,
    James.

you cannot use your pc license to install on a mac.  you would need a separate license (and serial number) for that.
adobe allows platform swaps, but only with the latest (xi) version, Order product | Platform, language swap
your option to use acrobat on a mac are to upgrade to acrobat pro xi and change platforms, use a windows emulator (parallels/boot camp etc) on your mac or swap with a third party.

  • Can anyone tell me how to upload a url to an image onto facebook the way you could with a pc. Recently switched over to Mac and this is one thing I can't seem to figure out. Basically in Windows you could right click on an image, click copy the image url

I've recently switched over to a Mac and before in Windows on a pc if you wanted to post an image on facebook you would right click the image you found on the post you wanted to share, then click copy url. You'd simply take that url and put it into the facebook post when uploading an image and that's all. Can not seem to find a way to do it now, other than saving the image to the computer and then uploading that which is not what I want to do. I've searched and searched but can't seem to find a solution other then posting in Parallels Window.
    Any suggestions??

Thanks brody, I had been able to do that but on my business fb page I often post images and put in the links myself in the descriptions. In Windows you're able to post images by simply pasting in the url but on the Mac I'd have to download someone's image which I'm not comfortable doing so I find myself switching back and forth between the Mac and Windows.
This link explains what I'm trying to do on the Mac probably in a less confusing way than I just did: http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57496509-285/quickly-upload-photos-to-facebo ok-by-pasting-the-image-url/

  • Switched over to Mac and having MAJOR problems with Powerbook G4

    Hello,
I'n the interest of not having to post many threads and to save bandwidth I will post my problems on one single thread so that you can address each issue.
    1) The adapter cord that plugs in to my Powerbook usually has a bright "yellow" light on the endge of the cord when plugged in. Recently the color changed to bright "orange" should I be concerned and is this a sign of something bad to come?
    2) When I press the power button "sometimes" the screen goes grey. I press the button, hear the chime, screen goes grey with a world logo that keeps flashing at limbo preventing me from getting in to the computer system. Why is this happening and how do I correct it?
    3) Select the Apple Icon on the top and go to Mac OSx software, IE Explorer loads and then FREEZES evertything on the system. It's as though it's crashing from the onset.
    4) At any given time while I'm searching through files or surfing the net a ridiculous littl ball appears in the shape of a rainbow that essentially locks my ENTIRE SYSTEM. I cannot click on any Icon or do much of anything. Forced to sit and helplessly look at this stupid object with no directive as to what to do. I can't even shut down my system in safe mode because it won't let me access the Apple Icon on the top menu. At last resort I have to HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON for 10 seconds just to shut it down.
    5) How can you retrieve files deleted by accident or do a system restore like you can in Windows? No disks came with my computer so I'm hoping that there is a button to click that can reverse actions and bring back system to an earlier time. I'm sure that Apple must have thought about this as people are going to make many mistakes and will need immediate and non complex recourse in restoring files and the system in general. I changed Admin privilidges to myself and deleted the former Admin of my system, thinking that it would only delete the "name" but instead I suspect that the system deleted 5GB of files that the former Admin installed? Not sure. I have nothing in my trash can and the deleted files under former Admin are in the form of an "image" on my hard disk. I tried to open the deleted file by clicking on the Icon and it's telling me "DISK IMAGE FAILED TO MOUNT no mountable file system. This is very frustrating as I need to see what files have been deleted and restore those that I need. I have OFFICE MAC X suite that now I can't locate and yesterday I downloaded the Opera browser and turned on the Mac this morning only to find that it to is gone.
Now granted Windows is a headache in itself but I never imagined that I would be going through all this madness with a Mac. Everyone spoke so highly of them and I'm finding out different from first hand experience. Hopefully, you can help me resolve the above issues as I'm feeling very frustrated with this computer.

    Hi again,
You definitely need to purchase some replacement disks for your computer. Just from hard shutdowns via the powerbutton can do system file damage and you need to Repair Dick using the install disk.
From your reply I would suggest obtaining a good Mac OSX users book such a one of the David Pogue books etc. You can find any number of them online for your OS. The learning of the Mac OS can be somewhat confusing for a switcher from PC and Microsoft OS's. I was somewhat lucky in that when I first started using computers I learned on a Mac so I never had any relearning curve to deal with. I think you will find if you stick with your Mac and OSX that you will learn to love it compared to PC's.
I can assure you that Apple did not drop the ball when it came to the PowerBooks as evident by it being one of the most succesful of all Mac notebook computers.....there are many many happy users still of PowerBooks. There is a specific forum here in Discussions for Powerbook computers that may help you with certain issues.
re: "I went ahead and downloaded my favorite browser Opera for the second time, since it disappeared yesterday after I restarted my machine. Hopefully, I will find it on the Doc the next time I start my system."
Once you download an app to your Mac you will need to place it in your HD/Applications folder. From there you can simply drag it's alias to the Dock or click open the app and then when the icon appears in the Dock click on its icon in the Dock once and hold and from its pop up contextual menu select "Keep In Dock". Applications do not automatically stay in the Dock.
I am not sure I follow your description of the problem of the lost 5GB of files that were on some sort of Disk Image and how you are trying to retrieve them for me to be able to help. If you have deleted the files they are gone on your computer and you will need to use a third party software to recover them (DataRescue is one such utility but these are expensive softwares and can have varying results with file recovery). If you know the name of any of the missing files you can do a search using the finders search field (double click on your HD icon and then use its search field upper right) to make sure that the files are indeed not on your HD anymore.
I also wanted to suggest when using the command +option + escape key combination to force quit a process sometimes may take a couple or a few tries to get it to work sometimes (at least that has been my experience). Did you read through Dr. Smoke's FAQ concerning the SBBOD?
In the end you will need to learn common system maintenance for your OS to function properly such as Repairing Permissions via Disk Utility and running the cron maintenance (daily, weekly and monthly) tasks which can be done manually or by downloading a third party freeware utility such as MacJanitor to help do this easily. One of the biggest reasons to have your install disks is this is how you will need to repair the disk for system corruption among other problems. This can only be done with OS 10.3.9 by using the install disk and booting to its DiskUtility.
I hope these tips help a little more and do post back with further questions,

I have recently switched from MobileMe to iCloud and I now getting an error message in iCal :

You may try to connect to the server again or take the account offline."
Since I am working from home and I am not on a server other than iCloud I don't understand why I am getting this message. (for 3 days). How do I fix it?

    TomCT60,
Is your MacBook using Mac OS X 10.6.8 as indicated in your post? If so you will not be able to fully integrate with iCloud.
iCloud and Snow Leopard, by Roger Wilmut describes what iCloud options are available for Snow Leopard.
If you are using Lion, go to iCal>Preferences...>Accounts, and delete/re-add your iCloud CalDAV server.

  • If I switch over to Mac from PC will I be able to use my Quickbooks pc version or Adobe photoshop cs?

Will Quickbooks pc versions work on Macs or will all my software have to be replaced? Will make the switch to Apple soon and trying to anticipate process. Also have Adobe photoshop CS and Quicken. Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

    Hello Herbert258,
    Short answer: No.
Long answer: You have to buy the Mac versions for applications, kind of like Adobe Photoshop. If you want to keep your applications (and save some $$$) you can install Windows on Mac using boot camp. There are programs out there like Parallels where you can run windows on your desktop of your future Mac. You still need a copy of Windows to install, and Parallels is about $70.
    Best of luck,
    Sean

  • Is anyone creating inkjet canvas prints at home with their Macbook Pro? What type of printer is compatible for this kind of job? Was using Hp inkjet 7300 (before switching over to mac)which uses 5 color cartridges.

I'm an artist and just purchased my first Apple product(Macbook Pro with retina 15")...prior to was using an Hp inkjet 7300 printer, which gave me wonderful prints on canvas, paper, fabric, etc. for many years. This particular printer uses 6 color cartridges including black. Now need to know if I can still use this printer or what would be a comparable companion printer for my Macbook Pro and deliver the same high quality of prints?

Your Mac should set it up automatically when you plug it into the computer.
    I hope I helped.

  • Just switched over to Firefox; not enabling me to send out in messages since switching over..

While in Internet Explorer; my yahoo internet account was compromised and I wasn't able to open any emails. I decided to give up on Internet Explorer and moved over to Mozilla Firefox for the added protection it offered. Now that I moved I am not able to send out notification emails to my address box. Is there a simple fix? I am using Window XP Professional.

Please update to Firefox 19.0.2 [[Update Firefox to the latest version]]
What address box are you using?

Google Chrome would offer dropdown prompts for this information as I started entering the information. I would simply highlight the correct prompt and hit enter and the information would be entered throughout the online form.

  • Switching iPod from Mac iTunes to a computer iTunes

We just switched from a Mac to a Dell computer. Problem is when I try to upload my iPod to the computer, it says it's set up for a Mac, and that I have to restore it first. But if I restore it, it will delete all my music. Any suggestions?

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews and has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. Once you have your songs saved to the PC you can go ahead and restore the iPod for Windows. You can get XPlay at this link: XPlay 2
XPlay is currently only compatible with Windows XP, 2000, Me or 98SE, a new version for Vista is planned for release later this year.

  • Just switched to Mail...Please Help!

    Hello,
I just switched over from Entourage to Mail, and everything was going fine. I am using an IMAP account to get email from my college webmail. All the folders I set up on my webmail were synced to mail and someone had told me that if I had a Sent, Junk Mail, Trash, and Drafts folder already exsisting that I should highlight it and go to Mailbox -> Use this mailbox for -> Sent, Junk Mail, Trash, and Drafts respectivly. However when I did this the icon for trash, junk mail and drafts disappeared and now my trash does not work correctly. Specifically, I cannot see any messages in the trash/deleted messages folder on Mail, but I can see them on the webmail. Any help to reset the icons would be appreciated.
Also, when I get a message that is automatically moved to a folder other than inbox how do I make the mail notification number in my dock pop up?
Last, are there any popular plugins or anything like that that I should know about?
    Thanks for your help,
    Eric

    Hello Eric.
In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/IMAP-username@mailserver/. With that folder open, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post to let me see the names of the files and folders it contains -- you may disguise any mailbox names you wish to keep private.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.
Also, when I get a message that is automatically

You don't. You need a plugin if you want that functionality.
