Newbie looking for a few answers on upgrading

I have been a switcher for about 5 months. I have a mental block sometimes from Windows... I tend to make it harder than it really is....
I am now interested in upgrading to Leopard.
I have a few concerns/questions.
I have a used mac mini (reason for the switch).
I plan on doing an archive and install.
So here are the questions.....
1. Where can I find a detailed step by step of what to do before/during/after install? ( i have a bootable backup already)
2. will I loose my iweb internet site?
3. do I need to de-authorize my itunes account before install?
4. How/can I bring my mail messages into the new mail......
Thanks for any advice you can give......

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
1. Where can I find a detailed step by step of what to do before/during/after install? ( i have a bootable backup already)
My FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
2. will I loose my iweb internet site?
Not if you archive and install and save user settings and your system is healthy. There is no guarantee your system is healthy, which is why you made a bootable backup.
3. do I need to de-authorize my itunes account before install?
No.
4. How/can I bring my mail messages into the new mail......
They will not move as long as you save user and network preferences.

You likely have a 2G iPod and those can go higher than 4.2.1
    A 3G can go to 5.1.1
IA 4G, with cameras can go to iOS 6.1.6.
The 5G, also with cameras can go to iOS 8
    To update
The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.
Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPod model allows

    - A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10 or higher. If a Mac it requires OSX 10.5.8 or later.
    - A 3G to 5.1.1  Requires iTunes version 10.5 or later
    - A 4G to 6.1.6  Requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. For a Mac, that requires a Mac with OSX 10.6.8 or later
    - A 5G to iOS 8 Requires iTunes 11.4 or later if you update via iTunes

looking for a simple answer  ........why is it more difficult for skype to connect than before . It fails to ring most times and your never sure if it is just slow or did not dial in the first place???  and is there any way to disable the leave a message feature ??? Why is it that everyone is trying to fix everthing when it isnt broken.

WTF? I'm sure you can find plenty of examples on google. It's on you to take the time to go through them, study them, and, if you still don't understand something, post a clear, concrete question that indicates what you read and what you didn't understand about it.
As is, you're essentially treating folks here as your research flunkies and saying, "Give me an example that's better than all the ones already easily available to me. Read my mind to know why I didn't like them."

  • Mac Newbie looking for short answers to multiple questions...

My computer experience started with the Commodore 64 in the 1980's and progressed to building my own Core Duo PC with 4 GIG RAM running 64 bit Vista Ultimate and several flavors of Linux. My only Mac experiences happened when I visited my elderly parents, who insisted on only using Mac's, generally ancient Mac's that they bought on eBay.
I was not interested at all in Macs and found the GUI very confusing to use. All that changed when my dad showed me the Mac Mini he bought. Instead of the hulking, slow, underpowered behemoths he usually used, this little machine was amazing. I had to have one, and yesterday bought a Mac Mini with superdrive and 512 MB of RAM, along with Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse. This was amazingly easy to set up, just starting with all of the PC stuff I have lying around.
Now, I need some one-line opinions from people who use Mac's, nothing complicated, just opinions. I don't need help configuring this machine, I just want to know what I can do with it. I find most people enjoy giving opinions!
--Is it worth it to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB? I wanted to do that at the store yesterday, but the salesman said that the procedure was too complicated in a Mac Mini to do myself, and I wanted to take the computer home right way.
--I use Photoshop Elements 5. Is it worth it to get Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac, or does my machine come with imaging editing software that does the same thing, just as well?
--I use Quicken 2007. I read a couple of reviews of Quicken for Mac from unhappy customers. Any comments?
--Can I use my existing external USB 2 or Firewire drives with my Mac Mini, even though they are partitioned as FAT32 and have many backup files from PC's on them? Do Mac Mini's write to FAT32 like Linux does, or do I have to reformat the drives?
--I use Acronis True Image to backup & image my hard drives so I can restore them if disaster occurs (as it seems to, rather often). How do you image a hard drive with a Mac, and is it worth doing?
--Is it worth it to use antivirus software on a Mac?
--Does anyone have any experience using open source software like Open Office or GIMP on a Mac?
--Are there any decent flight simulators that work on a Mac?
Please don't flame me or tell me to read the manual. I am looking for opinions, not instructions. I am also not interested in running Windows software on my Mac - I have had mixed results trying to do this under Linux, and I also have plenty of Windows machines to operate Windows software. Remember, the more people like me who are interested in switching over to Mac's, the better and cheaper the platform should become. Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Glad you found your way to the Mac in the present incarnation of MacOS. Earlier flavors of it were perhaps somewhat less elegant, though I have always had a liking for the relative simplicity and the integration of features which tend to make some work more easily accomplished than on the PCs I have also used.
--Is it worth it to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB? I wanted to do that at the store yesterday, but the salesman said that the procedure was too complicated in a Mac Mini to do myself, and I wanted to take the computer home right way.
Yes, the memory upgrade is very worthwhile. A stock mac mini runs perfectly well, but when taking into account the RAM used by the on board video, and the possibility of using Rosetta if you're using any non-native software, 512Mb is really not enough for smooth operation. Indeed, you'll tend to get pauses which can become annoying, particularly if you want to run multiple applications.
The salesman really should have pointed out that while the procedure to upgrade RAM isn't really all that difficult, the mini is not intended to be opened by the user at all because there are no user serviceable parts inside. However, RAM is readily available from third party suppliers and with a little on-line research, is a fairly simple job to undertake. Two things to watch for: 1) that the memory comes from a supplier who will swap it without question, because Macs are rather more fussy about RAM than PCs tend to be, and 2), when completing the memory upgrade, ensure you reconnect the tiny fan control cable - failing to do so will leave the fan running at full blast all the time. It's an easy omission, and even the experts forget it sometimes!
--I use Photoshop Elements 5. Is it worth it to get Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac, or does my machine come with imaging editing software that does the same thing, just as well?
Depends on what kind of editing and image adjustment you generally do. The mini comes with iLife, which includes iPhoto, which has all the usual array of adjustment tools for brightness, contrast, color balance etc, plus a useful one for tilting images to straighten them if taken at an angle, but it doesn't include the filters and effects of a true image editing application. Photoshop Elements on the other hand is feature rich and easy to use, though at a cost. Personally, I don't like iPhoto much and use Photoshop Elements, though there is also a truly excellent shareware application called GraphicConverter, which started life as a tool to convert images from one format to another (hence the name) but is now a very feature-rich image processor in it's own right. Worth a look and can be tried out for free. Have a look at http://www.lemkesoft.com/xd/public/content/index.cGlkPTE5Mw.html
--I use Quicken 2007. I read a couple of reviews of Quicken for Mac from unhappy customers. Any comments?
No experience of this personally, but I'd check those reviews and any others you can find to see what it is the writers liked or didn't like about using the software, and see if that helps you. There are always unhappy customers though, so reviews in magazines may be more objective.
--Can I use my existing external USB 2 or Firewire drives with my Mac Mini, even though they are partitioned as FAT32 and have many backup files from PC's on them? Do Mac Mini's write to FAT32 like Linux does, or do I have to reformat the drives?
You can use your FAT32 formatted drives with the Mac though you are limited to files of 4Gb maximum.
--I use Acronis True Image to backup & image my hard drives so I can restore them if disaster occurs (as it seems to, rather often). How do you image a hard drive with a Mac, and is it worth doing?
It IS worth doing, yes. I use SuperDuper! which is first rate and free for making complete duplicates of a drive, or $29 for the paid/registered version to allow incremental backups. Works like a charm. If you use a drive partitioned in the GUID scheme (as the mini's internal is) you can even then set that drive, and the cloned copy of your system to boot the mini.
--Is it worth it to use antivirus software on a Mac?
Personally I'd say yes. ClamXav is open source (thus free) and reliable, has a marginal hit on CPU load and helps ensure you don't inadvertently pass on infections (it can also spot types of malware such as phishing scames). As yet, however, there are no known viruses/worms/trojans that affect MacOS, so it isn't critical at this time. However at some point it is likely there will be - in my view it's better to be prepared than to be left to react at the time.
--Does anyone have any experience using open source software like Open Office or GIMP on a Mac?
Yes. Like all open source projects, there are some good and some bad, but by and large the open source community for MacOS based systems is active and effective. Both Open Office and Gimp work well for example.
--Are there any decent flight simulators that work on a Mac?
    X-Plane springs to mind.
There really are very few people you'll find in Apple Discussions who would flame you for asking such questions. Indeed, answering such things is one of the prime reasons we're here, and while there's always value in reading the manuals, it must also be said that in many ways getting useful information out of them means you have to know enough already to be able to work out what information you need from all the stuff available. Questions are easier to ask and pertinent information easier to give as a result!

  • Looking for powerlogix bluechip ws g4 upgrade or Sonnet Crescendo/WS G4

Hello everyone, I am looking to purchase one of these upgrades for my Powerbook G3 Wallstreet but I have been unsuccessful in my searches. I was hoping someone could point me to a place that still sell these, or someone would sell me there own. Thanks!

You might have to have an active search on eBay until one turns up.

  • Newb looking for advice...

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've never worked with wireless before.
Currently I'm on my Powermac G5, running ethernet into a linksys. Also have a dell laptop hooked up (with wires) through the linksys.
I just picked up an older ibook G3 yesterday, and I'd like to be able to connect wirelessly with it.
Could someone just give me a breif rundown of what exaclty I'd need (again, I'm a newb, so sorry).
The G5 does not have airport, and right now, neither does the ibook. I'm not looking for speed, just would like to be able to connnect the ibook wirelessly.

As a minimum, you'll need an original AirPort card for the iBook G3, and the April 2005 and earlier Power Mac G5s are compatible with the AirPort Extreme card. The later Power Mac G5s are not. Instead, these models require a special combo AirPort/Bluetooth card which must be installed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).

Tones of good material exists at the Maven2 site:

  • Looking for the definitive answer on what Camcorder to buy!

Hello folks, I could really use your help.
I'm an avid Mac user in the graphic design world, and have an iMac as a home machine. I'm going out next week to buy a Digital Camcorder so that I can begin working with home movies of my family and such. I'm new to the camcorder world, and have discovered a wealth of information regarding the cameras available...and as a result am more confused than ever.
What I'm looking for is a Camcorder with a price tag not much over $600 that will allow me to shoot good indoor & outdoor video of my family and children, and that is easilly compatible with my iMac and the newest version of iLife on the market. I want to create DVD's from this, and store our home movies this way.
Can anyone tell me what camera fits all of these requirements? I'm looking at the Canon Elura 80 which I've found good things about, but would really like to hear from some of you with experience on the subject.
Any input or suggestions would be tremendously appreciated. My thanks in advance.

  • Ubber Newbie Looking for Basic Samples

Hello- I've spent the last 3 hours or so trying to create a very basic calculator in Flex (aka: add a couple input cells). Spent time looking through videos, reading documentation, etc. Much of it assumes programming background or web development experience of which I have little.
So, wanted to find some very basic application samples I could take apart and learn from. I found some, but they are pretty advanced and most depend on communication to/from the internet (tons of facebook and photo apps).
I'm just looking for a simple calculator/mortgage calculator application I can take apart and learn from.
Anyone know where I can find examples for super basic users?
    Thanks!
    - Mr. Bill

Here is an extremely basic example of one way it can be done. You of course would need more operators, conditional code to handle those operators, and several other functions and formulas - especially for mortgages - but hopefully this will get you started on the basic method.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

         </mx:Script>
        <mx:TextInput id="TextInput1" x="24" y="41" width="50" textAlign="right" text="1"/>

  • Looking for audio switching answer

    Hi,
I'm looking for a way to separate my audio out from my built in audio, maybe via USB? The only thing I can find that might enable me to do this is the Griffin iMic. All I want is to be able to switch from iTunes playback from my stereo to built in audio sounds. At the moment I have an audio out cable plugged in which disconnects the built in speakers. Is there a simper way to do this or is the iMic the way to go?
    Thanks
    iLee

    try this
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS002475
you should ask Lenovo for detail audio spec (and find it at audio manufactured site), or use 3rd party application, or update your windows. This is not OS related issue. Nothing much we can do here

  • Looking for tjacobs to answer a few questions about his StandardPrint Class

    Hello,
Hopefully tjacobs will see this post and answer it as soon as he has time. I am trying to use your Standard Print class in a program I am developing to Print a JPanel in a JScrollPane and am running into trouble. I will have more info for you if you can find it in your heart to reply.
    Thank you,
    Ray Jaramillo

I'm in exactly the same boat as you... gonna be using it as my primary computer, graduating college soon, and my first mac. I'll be going with the 13 inch MacBook Air.
The Pro and the Air are nearly identical performance-wise and so that means the only advantage of the Pro is the storage space (unless you count the cd drive as an advantage). The Air is way more portable and has a better display, I don't know about you but my current cd drive rarely gets used so might as well get rid of it.
I have also compared them side-by-side in the store and that was really what won me over to the Air. The 11-inch Air was there too but the screen just seems too small, especially if you are doing work/writing essays etc.
    Hope that helped

  • Sort of off topic, but same old question looking for a new answer

Ok I'm ready to start a new site. I'm going cheap as it's all coming out of my pocket including hosting. I want to put a video chat room on my site. Is there anyway to capture a webcam in this fashion in director. I've done tons of searching but I can't really find anything. I'm trying to avoid using the flash communication server for three reasons. 1) I already have the director multiuser server that will host up to 1000 users (the room will never be anything close to that big 50 peeps tops) and my web host will support it and install it for me. 2) I can't find anything at a really cheap price. I'm looking at 25 cam users at once... 3) Actionscript is nothing I've every really worked with before, but I could do the lingo programming.
I have a few questions First of all I read something about putting a flash element on the stage, and that the flash player is what captures the webcam. But I assume that it still needs flash communication sever to upload the video. Is this correct?
Is there an xtra that will do what I  want?
I read something about encoding the video to realvideo, but I have no clue how as I've never done anything like that before. Will this work and do you know of a tutorial for this?
Do you know of a really really cheap flash comm host?
Really off topic but, I could write the text chat end of it in cold fusion. Is there a known way to easily add the video in this way?
Does anyone know of a cheap off the shelf video chat room that I can put up on my site and just pay for the bandwidth overage that it uses?
Thanks for any help any of you could give me.
    Cane

There are several 2.4 GHz MacBook pros shipped over several years.
If this is your Mac (2007 model) scroll down to the memory section and read:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/stats/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2 .4-15-santa-rosa-specs.html
    Standard RAM:
    2 GB
    Maximum RAM:
    6 GB*
    Details:
2 GB installed as two 1 GB modules. No slots free.
*Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 6 GB of RAM using one 2 GB and one 4 GB memory module.
Site sponsor Other World Computing sells MacBook Pro memory, as well as hard drives, batteries, carrying cases, and accessories.
... and that sponsor is not a bad place to get RAM at all. They are experts, and back it up with a "money back if it does not work in your Mac" guarantee.

  • Looking for 2GB of ram to upgrade my hp pav 20-b010z all in one

I am trying to find just 2GB of ram so I can upgrade my HP Pav 20-b010z all in one computer. My product # C1A32AV#ABA. It only came with 2 GB.
I have DDR3-1066MHz SODIMM Memory and Windows 8 64-bit. I only have one stick in the computer. I was told that I need to use PC3-12800. I'm pretty new to all of this.
Could someone please tell me what kind of ram I need to use that would be compatible with my computer. What brand too, please. If there is one by HP I would gladly like to use that.
Thank you for any help you can provide

    Hi:
Please take a look at the product specs for your PC at the link below.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03569440&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...
The PC3-12800 memory downclocks to 1066 MHz (PC3-8500).
You can install up to 16 GB of memory in your PC.
Why do things half measure?   4 GB is the minimum memory I would run a 64 bit OS on, and have it work acceptably.
I would just buy 2 x 8 GB of PC3-12800 memory and have all the memory you'll ever need, and get it now while it is cheap.
Here is a link to a place where you can get good PC3-12800 memory cheap.
I defaulted the search to PC3-12800. You can refine the search by clicking on the memory size, etc on the left side of the page.
Read the reviews and get what makes the most sense to you.

  • Total newbie looking for some advice

I am looking into FCP or Final Cut Express. Cost aside, I'm trying to figure out what would be the better option. I have a 20" iMac now and a canon HG21 camcorder. I want to be able to edit my footage in a way that's a whole lot better than iMovie can do. I hate iMovie 09. The question is whether FCP or FCE is the best option. I don't want to go with a lesser product and then think, "Oh man, that would have been so much better." but on the other hand, I'm not making Citizen Cane here so I don't want or need to over shoot the mark but getting a product that is too much when I won't ever use 70% of it. I know most would say FCE is the way to go but I don't want to be short sighted if FCP gives me benefits that warrant the larger program. Can a low end user (someone not making feature films or something) use FCP and get enough out of it to warrant the program? Think of it as a user who maybe only uses e-mail and iPhoto buying a $3,500 mac. That would be a waste. At what point would I be in one camp (FCE) or the other(FCP)?
I also like the fact that FCP just got upgraded while FCE has not and no idea when that will happen. Does FCP work well with Snow Leopard? I haven't upgraded yet but if FCP works better with the new OS than FCE does that would be a big factor in deciding.
Also, this export of this footage would be a standard DVD so if that matters between the two I wanted that bit of info out there. So basically in a nutshell, what product would you go with and why? I'm leaning towards the new FCP but I want to make sure I choose right considering my needs and hardware (can FCP run ok on a 20" iMac or do I need a pro system?) to be happy with the end product.
    Thanks for the help.

You can ignore this. I found out my answers. Looks like FCE is the program for me. If someone has something to add (maybe I'm wrong?) by all means let me know but it looks like FCE is the right choice.
