newbie Possibility to run X Server and Tiger both

Hi there I have a question about the following:
I want to install Oracle on my iBook G4 but unfortunaltely there seems only a possibilty for this by installing X server. Currently I have tiger and it is working just fine I do not need to have x server as main operating system because tiger is sufficient to me. My question is if there is any possibility that you can install X server and tiger both and choose which one to use when starting up. If so how do I have to do this and is it wise to do it or not?
If it it not possible does anyone know if there is a possibility to install Oracle on my G4? I have a wireless home network with only one Mac (iBook G4) and that’s it .
Well thank you in advance.
Scotia

It all depends on the size of your data on the Mac os X client setup .. tiger server can sure cohabit with mac os x client ... but first you will need to backup everything on an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner boot off your external hard drive , split your partition on the internal hard drive then back your macos x client down to your hard drive then install mac os x server on the secondary partition of your internal hard drive ...
Hoping this helps
PS: you can install mac os x server over a mac os X client installation but make SURE you backup your original installation and are ready to face a few updates. If possible try to get your hands on a copy of mac os x server 10.4.8 Universal.

• Is it possible to Run VM Server and VM Manager on a single machine

Hi,
I'm trying to learn VM and I downloaded both the VM Server and Manager from E-Delivery. The guide says I need two separate machines for the VM server and VM manager.
Does this mean I've to install the VM Server first and then Install VM Manager on a different machine, create the Virtual Machines and then run the Virtual Machines on the VM Server?
If I've got only one laptop, does that mean I've to install the Enterprise Linux first, install the VM Manager, create all the VM Machines I'll need from the Installation sources, then install the VM Server on the machine a fresh and run the created VM Machines on it?
I'm relatively new to Virtualization and any help would be highly appreciated.

There are other messages about running OVMM in the first VM on an OVM Server.
Yes, Oracle supports them both being on the same physical system. They even supply a template for it.
I tried to install it yesterday, but hit a resource snag. The testbed system I have available only has 2GB of memory and the OVMM template installation script aborts if the OVM Server does not have more than 2GB of memory. So my experiments for a faster DR process will have to wait for better hardware.

• Is it possible to run a server cluster with Mavericks?

Is it possible to run a server cluster, like using XGrid, but with Mavericks? I have a Mac Mini server and an older iMac lying around that I want to put to good use. If so, what software would I need and how should I set it up? Will I be able to link the 2 computers over Wifi or must it be Ethernet?

Sadly Apple no longer provide Xgrid for clustering it was last available with Lion aka. 10.7.x.
For any equivalent clustering capability you are either going to have to use an open-source Linux originated clustering solution like Slurm, Moab, or Beowulf. Then you have to applications written to be compatible with such solutions. This was the beauty of Xgrid in that it provided a framework that Mac applications could be compatible with.
Note: Clustering is not the same thing as a Storage Area Network. It is still possible to build a SAN using Macs even in Mavericks and Apple still support Xsan for this.
With regards to using WiFi or Ethernet, both would work but it will depend on how much data needs to be transferred (per second) as to wether WiFi would be up to the job, some tasks require lots of data to be transferred other tasks e.g. BitCoin mining do not.
Apple did come up with another framework called Grand Central Dispatch. In theory that might be extended to work in a cluster. However while GCD is now open-source I get the impression it is also abandoned by Apple See https://libdispatch.macosforge.org

Is it possible to run an iPhone and an iPod off of one iTunes account?  I want to buy an iPhone but I also want to use my Ipod Touch

NyVetteGuy wrote:
As a clarification, you can have up to 5 devices with iTunes.
Sorry, this is incorrect.  The limit of 5 relates to the number of computers you can authorize to use iTunes, NOT the number of iOS devices you can sync with a single iTunes library.  You can sync as many iOS devices as you like to iTunes.  See whitewater2's post below... he is syncing at least 6 iOS devices with the same iTunes library.

• Is it possible to run all OS and programs on Mountain Lion?

Greetings!
I have set myself the following challenge and wondered if it was technically possible to do the following:-
On a single mid-2012 MacBook Pro (with optical drive built in) running OS 10.8.5 as the main OS and obviously totally within the law of my country I would like the ability to run:
§ Power PC applications;
§ All Mountain Lion programs;
§ Any Linux program;
§ Windows 7 or later;
Note 1: I have already purchased Mac OS Snow Leopard Server and await it's delivery…
Note 2: I am happy to buy an OEM copy of Microsoft Windows…
Note 3: Microsoft Windows is sadly a necessity due to my University not supporting anything else for it's specialist software which I require for my studies.
Note 4: I would use Ubuntu Linux
Note 5: I have absolutely no desire to ever run Mavericks at all…
Thus, I would like my MacBook Pro to simply run any program I care to use, is this realistically possible?
Please accept my apologies if this is posted in the wrong section, I was a little unsure in which community to post this.
Thank you in advance,
CK

Thank you,
I shall do just that, as soon as I've purchased an OEM of Microsoft Windows…
Is there anything I should be aware of, other than to keep a back up of everything before I start, please?

• Is it possible to run sub vi and main vi at same time from startup?

Is it possible to run both my main vi and my two sub vi`s from startup, all of them continuously? I have to sub vi`s that are supposed to take in measurements from two different instruments continuously. I manage to make a program where I can open up and close the sub vi`s, but when my sub vi`s are closed, nothing is happening in them...and they start to run again when I open them...and I have to close them if my main VI is supposed to run. So the data in the chart is only from the periodes when the sub vi has been open.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I will send my labview programs. "Hovedprogram" is my main vi, "front" and "front 2" is my sub vi`s. I am also using global variables. I have already searched the discussion forum trying to find an answer to my problem, but I haven`t quite managed yet...
My sub vi`s are not connected to any instrument now, but I have inserted a sinewave-generator and a chart in "front"(my sub vi) so I am able to see that the sub vi actually stop running when i close the window.

• If I want to run OSX Server and also want to run Windows 8 on Boot Camp, will server still run when I boot into windows?

I want to set up OSX Server on my iMAC running Mavericks and also install Windows 8 on Boot Camp.  If I do this and boot into Windows, will that prevent server from running while I'm in Windows?

No.  Bootcamp, as you've described, requires rebooting into your chosen operating system.  If you want to run both OS X and Windows at the same time from your hardware, look at virtualization tools like Parrallels or VMWare.

Yes. TIger was the operating system in use when Intel Macs came out. Works fine.
Leopard? Well...that and FCP on any Mac is a crap shoot.

• How to run my server and webserver by one jvm.

I am using Jakarta Tomcate. And also I have devloped one server sort of thing for our requirement. How can I attach this thing with Jakarta Tomcate so that both will run on same jvm.
suresh

This depends upon your platform, but the basic idea is that you have java aliased to your j2re dir.
Do you actually have more than one JVM on your computer? If not, you need not be concerned about this.
on my Solaris server I have /usr/java->./j2re1.4.2_03

• Newbie question about Oracle Parallel Server and Real Application Cluster

I am trying to find out what kind of storage system is supported by the 9i Real Applicaton cluster. I have looked at the 8i Oracle Parallel Server which requires raw partitions and therefore NAS (network attached storage) that provides an interface at the file level will not work. Does anyone know if the 9i Real Application cluster has a similar requirement for raw partitions? any suggestions of whether SAN or other technology will be suitable? pointers to more information is appreciated.
Robert

Hi Derik,
I know this is a really broad question. No, it happens all the time! Here is a similar issue:
http://blog.tuningknife.com/2008/09/26/oracle-11g-performance-issue/
+"In the end, nothing I tried could dissuade 11g from emitting the “PARSING IN CURSOR #d+” message for each insert statement. I filed a service request with Oracle Support on this issue and they ultimately referred the issue to development as a bug. Note that Support couldn’t reproduce the slowness I was seeing, but their trace files did reflect the parsing messages I observed."+
I would:
1 - Start by examining historical SQL execution plans (stats$sql_plan or dba_hist_sql_plan). Try to isolate the exact nature of the decreased performance.
Are different indexes being used? Are you geting more full-table scans?
2 - Migrate-in your old 10g CBO statistics
3 - Confirm that all init.ora parms are identical
4 - Drill into each SQL with a different execution plan . . .
Raid 5 Don't believe that crap that all RAID-5 is evil. . . .
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_raid5_acceptable_oracle.htm
But at the same time, consider using the Oracle standard, RAID-10 . . .

• Win2000 Server and Tiger Compatibility

We're a commercial printer and just bought 2 new G5's with OS 10.4.3. Our server is Win2000, SP4. We also have some Mac's with OS9. We are connected to server via TCP/IP.
When copying customers files from OS9 to server, the type 1 font size is zero K when viewed on the G5. Fonts look ok when viewed from OS9. When copied from OSX fonts look ok but OS9 views size as zero K.
Do we need third party software such as XtremeZ-IP or is there something we can do to address this problem?
Thanks, Bob
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hi Bob!
Are your Mac OS X machines connecting via SMB rather than AFP? A file size of 0k would indicate you're looking at the resource fork rather than the data fork (where the bulk of the file's data resides).
ExtremeZ-IP isn't necessary, but for a commercial printer I'd recommend it to take advantage of 10.4.x's AFP 3.2 features such as long file names (up to about 255 characters) and Windows' full set of permissions (not just owner, group and everyone but also the extended permissions).
Keep in mind that to maintain compatibility with your Mac OS 9 systems, you need to keep file names short and permissions simple.
Hope this helps! bill

• Exchange Server 2013 and Remote Access VPN on a single server running Windows Server 2012?

Just by way of background, I have been installing and administering network servers, e-mail systems, VPN servers, and the like for many years.  However, my involvement with Exchange and Windows Server has been mostly on the forensics and data recovery
level, or as a (sophisticated) user.  I have never tried to deploy either from scratch before.  My deployment experiences have been mostly with Linux in recent years, and with small private or personal "servers" running such cutting edge
software as Windows XP back when it was new.  And even NetWare once.
When a client asked me if I could set up a server for his business, running Exchange Server (since they really want Outlook with all of its bells and whistles to work, particularly calendars) and providing VPN access for a shared file store, I figured it
could not be too difficult given that its a small business, with only a few users, and nothing sophisticated in the way of requirements.  For reasons that don't bear explaining here, he was not willing to use a vendor hosting Exchange services or cloud
storage.  There is no internal network behind the server; it is intended to be a stand-alone server, hanging off a static IP address on the Internet, providing the entirely mobile work-force of about 10 people with Exchange-hosted e-mail for their computers
and phones, a secure file store, and not much else.  If Exchange didn't need it, I would not need to install Active Directory, for example.  We have no direct need for its services.
So I did the research and it appears, more by implication than outright assertion, that I should be able to run Windows Server 2012 with Exchange Server 2013 on a server that also hosts Remote Access (VPN only) and does nothing else.  And it appears
I ought to be able to do it without virtualizing any of it.  However, I have spent the last three or four days fighting one mysterious issue after another.  I had Remote Access VPN working and fairly stable very quickly (although it takes a very
long time to become available after the server boots), and it has mostly remained reliable throughout although at times while installing Exchange it seems to have dropped out on me.  But I've always been able to get it back after scrounging through the
logs to find out what is bothering it.  I have occasionally, for a few minutes at a time, had Exchange Server willing to do everything it should do (although not always everything at the same time).  At one point I even received a number of e-mails
on my BlackBerry that had been sent to my test account on the Exchange Server, and was able to send an e-mail from my BlackBerry to an outside account.
But then Exchange Server just stopped.  There are messages stuck in the queues, among other issues, but the Exchange Administration Center refuses now to display anything (after I enter my Administrator password, I just get a blank screen, whether on
the server or remotely).
So, I am trying to avoid bothering all of you any more than I have to, but let me just begin with the basic question posed in the title: Can I run Exchange Server (and therefore Active Directory and all of its components) and Remote Access (VPN only) on
a single Windows Server 2012 server?  And if so, do I have to run virtual machines (which will require adding more memory to the server, since I did not plan for it when I purchased it)?  If it can be done, can anyone provide any pointers on what
the pitfalls are that may be causing my problems?  I am happy to provide whatever additional information anyone might like to help figure it out.
Thanks!

An old thread but I ran into this issue and thought I share my solution since I ran into the same issue. Configuring VPN removes the HTTPS 443 binding on the Default Site in IIS for some strange reason; just go and editing the bindings, add HTTPS and things
should be back to normal.

• Entity Framework - Code First - Migration - How to access SQL Server and Oracle using the same context?

Hello,
I use Entity Framework code first approach.
My project is working fine with SQL Server. But, I want to access Oracle too. I want to switch SQL Server and Oracle in run time.
I am able to access Oracle using "Oracle.ManagedDataAccess.EntityFramework.dl" in a new project.
But, Is this possible to access SQL Server and Oracle in the same project.
Thanks,
Murugan

This should be possible with a Code-First workflow.  In Code-First the database mapping layer is generated at runtime.
