Newbie Question - Accessing Email Over Network

OK so I purchased a laptop and set up a wireless network in my home. Everything seems to be working fine except I can't figure out how to see my incoming emails from the laptop. I get the mobileme messages on the laptop but not the messages that are coming in from my email provider. I could go into share screen mode and see emails on the IMAC that way. What am I doing wrong??

Do you have your email account on MobileMe or with another ISP? If the latter then you need to configure an account for your regular email provider, not MobileMe.

Newb Questions: Setting up a network

Hi All,
I apologize in advance for my ignorance, but I am trying to learn. I have 6 HP Pavillioin Slimline PCs with 10/100 ethernet adaptors. They are all running windows homex64. I am also trying to connect a macbook, 2 windows xp laptops, and 1 windows vista home 32 wirelessly to the same network. The slimlines are connected via ethernet and the laptops wirelessly. We also have 2 networked printers via ethernet.
We are running medical software. On 1 of the slimlines, we have the program running in server mode. All other computers are clients. We have our cable internet with DHCP though knology. The cable modem is hooked up to the WRT160N. Currently, the WRT160N is then connected to a large ethernet switch from which all the other computers are connected.The transmission between computers is relatively slow. The slimlines are running norton internet security 2008.
1. Would access be any better if I hooked the computer acting as the server directly to the router as opposed to going through a switch?
2. I need the computers to be able to all access each other for printer sharing (non ethernet ones) purposes, but I would like to reduce the hops between each computer and the server to help speed up data transfer. For all I know, there are so few computers that the hops won't make that much difference. Any ideas?
3. Any other suggestions on how to get maximum data transfer rates from the computer to the client computers(wired or wireless) through adjusting ports, etc. The clients access information from the server, but information is also entered on the client and saved back to the server.

Changed OVM IP.... cannot access guests over network.

I moved my test OVM server from one datacentre to another. This necessitated a change of IP address for the server and the guests. I was able to update the servers details in the OVS VM management app and all is well. The VM management server did not move. I can start and stop the guests etc etc. However I can no longer access the guest over the network. I can access the guests when I am logged on to the OVS server, I can ping, ssh and do all the things you would expect, I can even ping from inside one guest to another guest so there is, fundamentally, nothing wrong with the guest setups that I can see. It would appear as though packets to/from the guests are not being 'forwarded' or some such. I have triple checked all my network settings from OVS server and 2 guests and cannot get it to work. From inside a guest if I ping the gateway address I get no answer.
Is there something tucked away in the bowels of the xen configuration that still has some old settings ?
Surely I wouldn't have to re-install just because I changed the IP ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Is the MAC-address for the Xen-bridge in vm.cfg on the VM Server identical to the HWADDR in /etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-ethX ?

Can't access c3550 over network

If I understand your questions correctly,
1 - I'm attempting to access the switch across my network (via wired ethernet) from my admin workstation. The switch does not respond to network discovery attempts, including ping.
2 - I'm unable to ping the switch or any device connected to it from my admin computer. Also, devices connected to the switch can't ping each other, the switch, or any network IP.
3 - The only access I have right now is through the serial console.
I should probably also mention that this switch is being configured on my bench before deployment - if I can get it to work.

Can't access Mac over network since Mavericks update

Help! Since the update to Mavericks I can't access my iMac over my home network using my Nexus 7 tablet. I used to do it flawlessly right before I updated from Mountain Lion.
I was using ES File Explorer to browse my shared folders on my Mac from my Android Tablet right away and now I keep getting asked for a username and password to connect. I type it correctly but still not able to connect. I tried other file browing apps for my tablet (File Manger, AndSMB,...) but still unable to connect. The apps can scan my network and find the server address (iMac) but can't get access to it.
I must say that the Tablet can access the internet so it's not Tablet network settings related.
I tried the workaround found here http://cammodude.blogspot.ca/. Still not working. Any suggestions?

Try going back and checking the step 3 on the linked instructions for remote login where it mentions:

That's the part that will allow it. I've got "Remote Login" checked there' and and then make sure you have whichever user(s)/groups added for the login you're using. I have that set to Administrators and on then on my phone I have it set up with computer IP, port 22, my computer username which is a First Last type format with the space...whatever it normally says on your login screen on your computer or when you get prompted to allow software installs etc. and then the password.

If such default password and user name would be required, you should be able to find it in user manual.
But Im wondering why you access the TV over the IP?
You can connect the TV to the home network and the Toshiba TV menu support some options to access the network. In Media Player you can find the USB media player and Network Media Player. To get access to the video and picutres you have to use the 2nd option (Network Player)

Having problem accessing MacMini over network with PC's Windows 7

Hi all,
I have a Mac Mini with 10.6.x
Onec in a while, especially when restart Airport Extreme for upgrade or something else (both are connected with ethernet cable cat5e) ALL PC's on the network having problem accessing Mac Mini Server while All MACs are fine and can access all folders no problem. Usually takes about 3-4 min for PC to connect to server. Then once it is connected (it loads all folder and files in that current window on the PC) i can go from folder to folder with no delays. However if i close the window with all folders then again i have to wait for around 3 min. to load everything all over again. AFP and SMB are ON. Today i made an experiment and turned SMB off and the problem still excist with the difference that after 3-4 min delay no folders were shown.
It seems that the PCs have hard time establishing connection with the server which is weird that Macs don't have that problem. It must be something with the setting of Mac MIni. Other wise i have no problem accessing Internet so the routher is working fine. DHCP is ON on the AP Extreme.
I came across as i was searching for this issue and it seems that authentication - Golden triangle or whatever is called - might be the issue in the whole mess. Do you guys think that this might be the case ?
The only way i have found out to help is to restart the Router and Server and that usually fix the problem .
Could you please help me figure what is going on there?

Given your response and your concern, consider creating a backup of your disk. Shut down, boot the installation DVD, and use Disk Utility (from the Utilities menu) in the second screen of the installation process to copy your disk contents to an external storage device. (Time Machine isn't as good at getting a backup of a server as is a clean backup created while shut down.) There are descriptions around that detail how to create this backup using Disk Utility.
There is no DNS server implemented in the Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme forwards DNS requests to a DNS server elsewhere. Few gateway devices contain DNS servers; that these devices request a DNS address tends to be confusing, too. That address is solicited from the user for use in the DHCP server that many of the available gateway devices provide.
There is no need for a DNS forwarder, particularly if your server is configured for your LAN. (Adding a forwarder adds another hop into the whole translation process. That configuration and that extra hop can be useful when the intermediate DNS server is providing specific, enhanced DNS-related functions, such as security monitoring and logging, or providing a "nanny filter" mechanism.)
If you are running DNS services on your LAN, then your Airport Extreme DHCP server should be configured to pass out the IP address of your DNS server.
It would appear that your local box has the default self-hosted DNS, and is not configured to serve LAN DNS (other than for itself). That's good. Accordingly, it'll likely be getting good DNS from itself, but will not be getting translations for other hosts on your network. That's not so good. When DNS responses are not available, you'll get DNS-level timeouts, and those are usually around 30 seconds each.
Check your server logs for messages related to the failed connections, and check the Windows file service logs for any errors being generated by the file service. The log information is most easily available from Console.app, which is a utility in Applications > Utilities folder, or from the Server Admin tool (Applications > Server folder) for DNS, and for the file server component.
The above is probably going to read like a wall of unfamiliar jargon, so please ignore this and my previous response here, and I'll leave it to somebody else to assist you here.

Unable to access Mac over network

For some reason I am having problems connecting to my G4 from my Intel iMac. When I go to the Network icon in my sidebar, I get an error message that comes up when attempting to connect to my G4. The proper name for the G4 is G4Drive. This is how I named it in the G4 Sharing prefs. For some reason the old name is still showing up as well (G4hd). Are there some cache files or pref files I should trash, or is there some kind of database that I have to rebuild?
By the way, accessing the G4 from my Dell PC works fine.

Two things that might work/help...
#1 In Finder>Preferences>Sidebar, toggle the Show Network Icon" OFF, then reboot and turn it back on.
#2 In Finder do a CMD+k, type in afp://ip.of.g4.num
(assuming Personal File Sharing is on as well as Windows Sharing on the G4)

im trying to run my servlet class file but am not able to do so. I've compiled my servlet and the class file generated is under build...web-inf/classes as it should be. Now how i do access this through the browser , isnt it just not localhost:29080/MyWebApp/HelloServlet. Thanks

Newbie question- Controlling computer over internet

I have ARD 2.2, running on ibook G3 using OSX 10.39.
My mom, who lives quite far away just bought a mac (her first) and I'm trying to use ARD to take control of her computer so as to set it up for her.
She's using a new Intel Imac running OS 10.4x Should I be able to control her despite our differences in OS?
The added problem is that her computer is connected through a router, so her IP address starts with a 192, which is usually a locally assigned IP I think.
Anyway, should I be able to take control of her with this setup? If not, would I be able to if she connected directly to the internet (no router)?

Don't worry about doing anything to your AirPort Station; nothing there needs to be configured. It's the other router (probably a Linksys or DLink?) that requires configuring as well as yur mom's Mac. You'll need to know the current IP, mask, and router information from the Network System Prefs (TCP/IP). You'll also need to know the DNS server addresses (although sometimes you can just use the router # and be okay).
Setup the Mac (her Mac) with a static IP out of the DHCP range; if her current address is 192.168.1.100, then use 192.168.1.151 as most of the router default to handing out no more than 50 DHCP addresses. Whatever mask has been assigned by DHCP is what you'll want to use for the static setting. The router will be the same thing (whatever it is through DHCP). DNS can be found by logging into the router and checking its "status" page. Alternatively you can call the ISP.
Log into the router, go to the "Port Forwarding" or "Gaming" page, set it forward traffic (both TCP and UDP) on port 3823 and port 5900 to 192.168.1.152 (which is the new address you're using for your mom's Mac). Save the config settings.
Check the router's status page for the DNS and public IP address (the one assigned by the ISP that the router is using "on the outside"). Note this as you'll need it later.
Now you (on your Mac, use the ARD admin app to capture the public IP (mentioned in the previous paragraph). Use the password you (or your mom) set when configuring ARD sharing in the Sharing systems prefs. You're done.

Windows 7 media center MCE plug-in & Elements 8 - can not access catalog over network

Hi,
I have Elements 8 installed on windows 7 and want to use the Microsoft Media Center photoshop plugin to view photographs and slide shows held on a network share. How do I configure the plug-in to find the catalog on the share ( at address P:|Pictures ).
All I can see is an entry for "My Catalog" on screen and a small number of black thumbnails.

For some reason when using the "certified" MCE version of the Forceware drivers, after a short while all the buttons in the menus become "corrupted"
The simple solution: use regular XP/2000 version of Forceware drivers. They still work perfectly in MCE2005, and the graphical corruption doesn't appear.

Can't access email over wifi with iPhone 5, iPod Touch, or iPad

All was working fine, then suddenly stopped. Get message "Cannot Get Mail The connection to the server failed.", followed by "Cannot Get Mail The mail server "imap.yahoo.com" (or "imap,gmail.com) is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings." message. Email works on cellular connection on iPhone; not an option on iPad or iPod Touch. I've tried verifying settings, resetting all devices, deleted and reinstalled email accounts (yahoo and gmail). No luck. Any suggestions?

I got this error for my Gmail, and Hotmail accounts but not for my Exchange account at work. It seems to be a problem on Apple's side since it affects multiple mail systems.

Accessing shared files over network

I am having some problems with a couple of database files that I access with a Java program over network. Different computers running this program all need access to these files, and my question is if anyone know of a good way to make sure that only one user have access to these files at the time. There is no server software running were the files are stored, they are simply reached through file sharing. Currently I am creating a lock file indicating that someone is editing the files, however if I am unlucky 2 users create that lockfile at the same time and then both get access to the file corrupting it. Anyone experienced this and know of a nice solution to avoid it?

You have Acrobat Pro on your system. It will try to open PDFs, and of course it will fail. You must uninstall it. Then, you will need a PDF reader. So install Adobe Reader. That seems quite simple, but perhaps something is wrong. If anything goes wrong with these two steps (1) uninstall Acrobat Pro (2) install Adobe Reader, then please let us know the details.

Like title, I would like to gain access to localhost outlook emails. I am not sure how to do it.
Currently I am using interope object.

Do you use auto collect on these devices?
if so, and they appen to clash ie two clients accessing email at the same time the account will crash and the password will be rejected. If you are using multiple devices then make each or all but one is set to manual collection of email. This solves the problem.
Also eamil should be set up, not as Yahoo mail but as straight forward pop3 mail.
