Newbie question: any tips on preparing to migrate to 10.5 Server from local

accounts?
here's the situation: i have a client that has about 15 Mac users, all of them are on 10.5 and they all have local user accounts.
this company shares their network and file sharing resources with another company on the same floor that is all windows based. the file servers are windows based.
my client is trying to separate itself from the other company and one of the things it is interested in is setting up an Xserve with 10.5 Server running.
the client wants to be able to manage software updates and resources for his users. he also wants to have a Mac Server set up for file sharing instead of sharing a windows server with the other company.
i am new to setting up 10.5 Server (or any other version) so i am not sure what i need to do before setting this up, or migrating. i think it i had to set this up from scratch i could but since they already have local user accounts and file sharing already set up, i am not sure how to get started.
i guess my main concern is getting all the local user accounts into Work Groups with out anyone losing any data.
any help is appreciated.
thanks!

I can't think of why there would be any problem moving an image over since they are both powerPC. Since the time machine restore didn't work how about putting the G5 in target disk mode and using something like carbon copy cloner to image the g5s hard drive.

  • Migrate Sun One application server from One Server to Another

    Dear all,
We need to migrate the Sun ONE application from Sun Ultar server to Sun Fire 210. Please share with me if any one done the migration.
    Thanks & Regards
    Arun

I am sorry. My question was poorly worded after some hours of frustration. What I am really trying to do is develop a base virtual machine snapshot with Sun Web Server Loaded and a base set of applications.
When the need arises, I need to deploy another VM and start it up. There seems to be some issue with the host name of the VM and the administration server, or something. It is my impression that as longs as I have everything contained in one directory like /webserver, I should be able to copy everything to a new machine and start it up. I know I need the listeners listening on all ip addresses and the jdk being used would need to be in that directory as well. Is there anything I am missing here or that I need to watch out for?

  • Newbie Question: Any problems networking a Time Capsule to PC via ethernet?

I'm new to Apple. I was thinking of replacing my existing WiFi router which is connected to a standard cable modem with a Time Capsule and using it to back up both my Win 7 desktop and the Macbook Pro (Mountain Lion). Connection to Desktop would be ethernet, MBP would be WiFi. There is also a new HP 710 printer with WiFi connection. Are there any foreseeable issues doing this? Any problem with PC internet connections using Time Capsule? How good is the Time Capsule as a router?
I've done some  searching but mostly just come up with people who have had problems so I'm wondering if this is generally a smooth process
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks, that's some help. The router I have is ok. DLink Draft N. When you say wireless performance is poor, do you mean data transfer to the drive or speed in general. ?
Wireless speed Bob has stated are link speeds.. actual transfer speeds are much slower.. The TC is only N lite on 2.4ghz.. so your dlink is probably faster even at draft N and with decent external antennas, probably has better range. 5ghz in the TC is very poor range.. but there are only a couple of routers now that you can call good. Eg Asus RT-N56U is specifically reinforced 5ghz.
Internet is so much slower, that G wireless is perfectly adequate for most people. But for data transfer to the hard disk over wireless you want the best speed you can get.
Still trying to determine if it is at all tricky to set up for Windows. i.e. does the drive have to be partitioned and formatted for Windows?, what Backup software for Windows, i.e. does Windows backup work with it?, etc.
    Thanks again
You do need to fix the TC name and wireless name so they are SMB compatible. ie short no spaces pure alphanumeric. Other than that windows should work ok.. you can load bonjour for windows which helps locate network products of the Apple kind.
Mixing data and TM backups on a TC is another issue. Read a bit from friend Pondini..
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Q3 here is highly relevant. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Most back up software will work fine.. but the low end win7 version MSBackup may not use network drive.. you need pro or ultimate.. which is all nonsense to get more money out of you.. Don't bother with MS backup at all. There are excellent windows backup software.. readily available .. just google for reviews.. I use Macrium Reflect to do whole disk images. It is free .. my kind of pricing. But you need to pay for a license to do incremental. Acronis True image is available free with lots of WD external disk products and you can purchase it for good prices.
BTW the most important thing with a backup software is how well and how easy it is to recover. Macrium Reflect creates a boot CD for you running linux or windows PE.. it helps you easily find the network location of the backup.. and restores a whole disk image in 1-2hours.. depending on the size. You can put in a brand new disk.. and have a computer restored in no time if you are smart and use a boot partition and data partition. Set them to different backups.

  • Migration to 10.6 server from 10.5.8 - Kerberos issue

    Hello,
I'm trying to migrate a 10.5.8 PPC Server on to a new 10.6 Intel server. The machine looks after our managed preferences for our Macs, so it's an Open Directory master.
The new 10.6 machine has a fresh install of 10.6 server. It has been joined to our Active Directory and I am promoting it to an OD master. I was going down the road of using the OD backup/archive from the old 10.5.8 machine, and importing/restoring this on to the 10.6 machine using the 'Merge' option. If I do this, all of my computers and groups appear and clients are managed, however in the Kerberos section of Server Admin it lists the Kerberos realm as the name of the old machine. I had found some instructions online which say you can destroy the Kerberos settings then re Kerberise the server by clicking "Kerberise" in server admin, but this option is not there once I trash the old Kerberos settings.
So, is there a way to use the backup archive from the old server and somehow replace/make it forget the old hostname?
    or
Is there a better way to do this?
    Any advice welcome

    Hi Stephen
I've not seen a problem exporting from 10.5 to 10.6 . . . yet. I've had problems in the past going from 10.4 to 10.5 and 10.4 to 10.6 especially with Groups but not always. It seems 10.6 'handles' GUIDs and/or UIDs slightly differently to previous iterations of the server. I've also seen problems with imported Groups and ACLs. Whenever I delve deeper though I never see anything obvious. The 'cure' is to recreate the Groups. I would not be surprised if you had to do the same for Computer Groups? Not that much hassle as typically in an AD-OD Integrated environment there are not that many OD Groups nesting AD Users/Groups. The Computer Groups is the 'biggy' I suppose although again in most AD-OD Integrated environments there's generally only one or two, possibly three. Mostly there's just one. In my experience macs are usually outnumbered 10 or 20 to 1 anyway. From my point of view exporting Computer Groups is not something I generally do. Although this does depend on the environment.
Apart from the slight problem with MCX at hardware is login successful?
    Some questions for you:
Was the 10.5 Server itself an update of a previous version of the Server?
Have the clients been updated to 10.6 or are they a new build?
If they were updated did you remove any bindings prior to running the update?
Did you strip out any Managed Preferences beforehand?
In an environment like yours updating the server OS in my experience is generally not the problem. If there are problems it invariably turns out to be with the client OS or the Windows environment due to a recent update/upgrade. With that in mind I've always tried to start with a clean client OS that has no 'knowledge' of what went before. That way there's less likelihood of anything 'hanging' around that may cause a problem. Generally I would plan to do this during the summer break when there's plenty of time to test and test again. However if you're under pressure to get this done quickly then you can't really wait.

  • Migrating Dimension Server from local installation to High Availability

    Hi Team,
When Hyperion was installed on the client site (11.1.2.3), there was no requirement for EPMA to become highly available.
Now that has become a requirement to make it highly available in the event that one of the virtual machine is unreachable.
In the event that a server becomes unavailable, it is acceptable for a manual failover procedure to be done.
What steps can be taken to prepare for such an event?
    Possible outcome:
Configure another dimension server on the second Virtual machine and leave it manually switched off.
Modify the IIS path to point to a clustered location accessible by both machines.
In the event of a failover, manually bring up the dimension server on the other machine.
This is yet to be implemented successfully.

    Remote Desktop/Preferences/Task Server
Add the FQDN or I.P address of your server in this pane on your book(basically your pointing your book to your installed software on the other machine). Setup your server with the installs you want it to make, and administer it via your book (or any machines with another unlimited ARD) IF you want report generation, you would schedule the clients to send the info to the server. A task server can only do 2 things, install packages or change client settings, thats it.

  • Migrating Certificate Services to Server 2012 in a 2008 R2 AD Domain

We have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Active Directory domain. Our Enterprise Certificate server is running on Windows 2003 R2. We'd like to introduce a Windows 2012 server into our existing domain and migrate the Certificate Services to that new box. Are there

    Hi,
You can migrate Certificate Services to another server but server name should be same. Also changing the server name which has CA role installed is not recommended.

  • Anyone successfully migrated an existing DSfW server to an OES11SP1 server using the new migration wizard ?

See above - I do not want to be the first one.
    W. Prindl

I had a very bad experience migrating a simple file server from OES2SP3
    32-bit to OES11 (without SP).
So I am a little bit cautious.
I want to migrate a single DC DSfW server (OES2SP3 32-bit) in a multi
server edir tree to a new OES11SP1 server. The only thing which runs in
addition to DSfW on this server is an iprint server, which shall be
    migrated, too.

  • How to migrate DNS, DHCP Server from 2003 to 2012

    Hi all,
I have one old server running server 2003, and i need to migrate the dns and dhcp server to server 2012.
I found all the articles, there are only migrate from 2003 to 2008 or 2008 to 2012.
Is there anyway to migrate it?
    Thanks.

Really confused why the "answer" to this thread states it can't be done, when clearly it can.  This is the official approach (article dated Oct 2013):
Migrate DHCP Server to Windows Server 2012 R2
Within, you'll see that it says:
This guide provides instructions for migration of a DHCP server from a server that is running Windows Server 2003 or a later operating system to a server running Windows Server 2012 R2. Supported operating systems are listed in the following table.

i have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

You just need a powered hub.. if you already use one then fine.
Plug in just about any external hard disk will work fine. Format has to be readable by the TC.. ie fat32.. or much better HFS+.. plug it into a Mac to prepare the drive.
Pick whatever size suits.. nowadays 2TB are most economical.
WD, Seagate have goobled up all the minor players.. so pick one.
Whatever suits your budget and asthetics.
NOTE.. The USB on the TC is fine for printers.. IMHO it is the wrong way to go with USB disks.. use the internal disk of the TC.. USB is less than half the native speed plugged into a Mac.. TC to USB is slow.. far slower than internal drive.. or using external drive as external.

My question is how do I watch music videos while my iPad is connected to the cd player in my car? I haveva new cd player. I get sound but screen just says accessory connected and I canted anything to the touch screen. Any tips?

1 a cd player only plays audio, no video
2 iPad does not tether to players other than to SEND data to an HDMI or VGA with the proper adapters.
The camera adapter will allow you to import camera data (pictures)

  • Any tips for optimizing photos for Flash?

I'm curious if anyone has any great tips for preparing photos
to be used in a Flash website.
I'm very familiar with Photoshop and I've designed many
non-Flash sites so I know the general approach for preparing photos
for the web. I've done a few Flash sites which are heavily image
based... no images galleries but just large photos used in the
    layouts.
In the interest of keeping the file size down to a minimum,
I'm bringing the quality of my jpegs down to 45 or even 30 in
Photoshop (this usually makes them around 40K +- 10K each).
Needless to say, they lack the sharp quality of a good image when
    brought down to this size.
Lately, I've seen some really great Flash sites that have
very large images in their layout The photos are very clear and the
    site moves smoothly/quickly.
So, I guess my question is two-fold:
    1) What can I do to maximize the quality of the photos
without compromising the speed of the site?
    2) As a general rule, what is the range of quality for photos
brought from Photoshop into Flash? (jpeg, psd, gif?)
    thanks for any insight!

    Is this typical?
I just exported a background image of bricks (which needs to
    look pretty
clear) and the export on my jpg was 61KB, my png export was
    361KB.
Should I use the *.png anyway? It doesn't look, to me, like
    there's much
    difference between the two.
I don't expect to have the site scaling -should be pretty
    static.
    TIA,

Currently we are facing some issues with the Unix setup so we are proceeding with our development R&D on Windows whilst re-installing the Unix box

    Deployment
B1. Since we are performing our Dev R&D, is it possible to move all our work from the current windows environment into our Dev Unix environment?
From the forum, I found there are 2 methods
B2. - copy the directories (C:\OracleBI\server\Repository and C:\OracleBIData\web\catalog) over for Windows. Is it possible to do the same from Windows to Unix?
B3. - using Catalog Manager. How do I use this? (Cudn't find any docu for it)

C1. The total number of records is 9 but when we pull the data out from Answer the records are grouped returning only 8 records. Is there a config setting to return all the rows?
Also wud appreciate if you experts can share any tips/common practises that you practise for easier development/deployment etc? e.g. creating alises instead of using the imported table.
    Thanks

A1. It's better to use Oracle native drivers connection for an Oracle database (OCI).
    A2. See [this thread|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=845201].
    B1. Yes, no issues.
B2. Yes, no problems. Just use FTP.
B3. Open two instances of Catalog Manager (one for your Windows Server and one for your Unix Server) and then just do Copy/Paste between them. Although it's simpler and better to copy the whole catalog using FTP as you mentioned in B2.
C1. Grouping is done by default because you have aggregable measures. Include the field that will break the records if you want to see them all. You can include a field in the criteria tab and hide it if you don't want to see it. This will force OBIEE to select it and show all records.

I have a Macbook Pro 15" that is three and a half years old.  Although it has slowed a bit, it still runs well and runs every program I need. Any tips for how to keep this old computer running well and in good health?
I have a 250 gig drive and try to keep at least 100 gigs unused at all times, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, back up with Time Machine and CrashPlan, and have OS X 10.7.3.
This was my first Mac since an old Apple II GS.  After that I used PC's and got really good at reformatting, replacing drives, reinstalling, defragging, resolving software conflicts, etc.  Since switching back to Macs (five in my extended family now), I haven't had to do any of those things. So, although, the cost is three times as much, the aggrevation has been ten times less.
I'm retired and living on a fixed income and would therefore like to keep this computer running as opposed to constatntly upgrading.
    That said, any tips?
    Thanks
It does have a crack on the left of the screen case about 3/4'' up from the bottom.  I've posted that as another question.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Adding more RAM, if feasible, and a new, faster hard drive may also help pep it up a little.
