Newbie Question - Factory Reset

Does the erase and install (factory reset) feature really erase EVERYTHING?
and I really mean everything.

Disk Utility->select the disk, not the underlying volume->Erase tab->Security Options button. Details in Disk Utility->Help->Disk Utility Help->search for erasing disks and read the details under securely erasing.

  • Question about factory reset

Hello! Own a toshiba quosmio x870-11j. I would like to ask you, if I do a factory reset, will I need to use a win7 disk if I want to boot  the pc on again, or is the windows builtin?

    Qosmio X870-11J (PSPLXE-00Y00XHU)  <- Hungarian version
When you restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media, everything is restored, including Windows.
See the section System Recovery, which begins on p. 5-20 of the User's Manual (attached).

  • IPod Touch Factory Reset Question

I have a 4th Gen iPod touch that I bought at a pawn shop. It is password locked and none of the factory reset methods online have worked (I believe the Home button may be broken).
Can it be forcibly factory reset if taken to an Apple Store?

Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs and then restore via iTunes:

  • New ID pin or factory reset. NEWBIE

So, my mother has given me a playbook she purchased from her friend. We do have the password.
First off, I have no idea what I am doing. I can see the womans fb messages and emails. I just want to see my stuff. Do I need a whole new pin or do I do a whole factory reset?

Doing a factory reset will erase all personal information left behind by the previous owner. After that, registering your BlackBerry ID with that PlayBook will prevent any future messages from another user from making their way on to your PlayBook. As long as the previous BB ID is registered on that unit, messages will continue to show up on it.
    Cheers.

  • IPhone 4 16gb Factory Reset with "Other" showing up question

i just factory unlocked the iphone 4 with my provider. i did a full factory reset and set up as a new device.
currently it displayed 439 MB "Other" and 13.27 GB Free. i understand that a part of the 16gb is used for the ios operations. so that i should have somewhere between 13.6 - 13.8 GB of actual free space. i am wondering what the 439mb of "Other" is and if its something i can ger rid of.

There will always be "Other" on a device, it is the OS, SMS/MMS/iMessages, and various other things that do not fit into the other defined catergories.
The difference between the 13.x GB available and the advertised 16GB capacity is NOT iOS.  It is merely a difference in the way the capacity is advertised versues actual capacity.

  • New or Factory Reset?

I am sorry if this is a really stupid question......but how can I tell if an iPhone 5 is really new - or whether it has been Factory reset by the owner? The phone I am looking at is being sold as new (apparently it is from Apple, as a warranty replacement)
According to an IMEI checker, the phone has a validated purchase date, is registered but not activated. The photos of the phone (it is on eBay) show the settings screen , with the IMEI, serial, version etc. Does this mean it has been "set up" already?
So - aside from the obvious methods, such as condition of the phone - how do I tell if it is actually a new replacement or whether it has been reset/restored to "new" ?
Again, sorry for the embarrassing newbie question. I hope I have posted this in the correct section?
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for your reply. Sorry I didn't word my question very well!
What I meant was, how do I tell if the person selling the phone (on eBay, in this instance) is trying to pass a phone (which has been restored to factory settings in iTunes) off as a new (replacement) phone?
So he/she has actually been using the phone, decides to sell it - resets/restores it to "factory" state and then lists it for sale as "new". Aside from any marks/scratches etc - how could I tell if this had happened?
Apologies for a confusing 1st post!
    Thanks

Even if the email address was only associated with another Apple ID (as an alternate or rescue email address), it would not be available for use as your Apple ID (email addresses can only be associated with a single ID).
There isn't anything you can do to troubleshoot this on your own.  You could try contacting Apple support to see if they can help.  You are not normally charged for support questions related to your Apple ID.

  • How to restore an X61s (MBR?) to access ThinkVantage Factory Reset

    Hello Community,
I read several posts regarding different kind of boot problem scenarios, but nothing fit so far..
I can successful boot into the Windows XP Professional partition; but somehow I messed up all my network drivers during a bluetooth software experiment. Tired of trying different drivers, but, hey, no problem, there is a hidden 6 GB Lenovo partition on the harddrive that is supposed to reset the X61s to factory settings.
However I cannot boot into that partition. A collegue has an X61s as well; when he presses the blue ThinkVantage button on restart he gets to that Recovery / Factory Reset screen. When I press that button I only get a choice of [ESC] Continuing to boot, entering the bios or [F12] choosing a different boot device. I'm assuming that this somehow has to do with me resetting the MBR to a "standard one" with one the many MBR tools out there. (I tried GRUB on there last year for an Ubuntu installation that I removed already by now.)
So I copy the 512 MBR from my collegue, write it to my MBR (MBRWizard); as a result the Windows partition doesnt boot anymore (dead cursor top left). Booting again from my Utilities CD (thank god I have an external USB drive), restoring to that "standard" MBR.
At this point I don't care about the factory recovering anymore and try the Win XP Pro DVD from my desktop; after all I have the product key printed on the bottom of the X61s. Result: Bluescreen; possibly harddrive failure; which I cannot confirm returning to HD scans from the running Xp partition.
So now I am puzzled: How can I reset my X61s to the factory standard or install a new XP on it?
How can I get the original ThinkVantage button rescue screen back? (As suggested in a different forum post, I installed the latest Rescue&Recovery 4.2, but no differences) I found a link to an MBR repair DISK to download from Lenovo. Don't have an external drive; so also no option.
Could anybody please point me in the direction from here? I'm ... lost.... : /
    Thanks

Sorry. That was mostly just boiling rage after someone walked into the office in the middle of the day and stole multiple phones. (We develop iOS apps…) We were googling frantically and trying to figure out:
"Okay, so we locked the phones. WTH, they just showed up at Smith Street? Okay, well we offerered a reward. Is someone gonna reset them and sell them? Can they even reset them? Should we erase the phones? Are they already bricked if they're locked? Does erasing the phone protect data? Or does it just unlock it and hand it to the thief on a silver platter?"
So long story short, we erased them. Then became unclear whether that protected the data or whether it really just performed a factory reset and made the phones resellable. At any rate it's pretty clear they're not coming back.
Bottom line: the euphemism of 'lost phone' is frustrating when you can pretty clearly watch your phone getting stolen. Given the number of phones that do get stolen, it's frustrating that it's so difficult to track down what the different options are actually doing and what the ultimate fate of your phone will be.
Question 1: We click 'Lost Mode.' Is there a way for someone to do a factory reset and sell the phone?
Question 2: We clock 'Erase phone.' Is there a way for someone to do a factory reset and sell the phone?
Question 3: We clock 'Lost mode' followed by 'Erase phone.' Is there a way for someone to do a factory reset and sell the phone?
Sorry for my rude or otherwise upleasant tone before. I know they're just phones, but no one was in a good mood yesterday afternoon.

  • If i factory reset my ipod touch(5th gen), can i reset it as the option 'set up as new ipod', and then i can just go into the app store/itunes store and restore my music and apps and not icloud with photos and ect?

if i factory reset my ipod touch(5th gen), can i reset it to the option 'set up as a new ipod', and then i can just go into the app store/itunes store and log into my apple ID so i can just restore my music and apps and not icloud with photos, contacts, ect. and then later i can add contacts that i need/want instead of them restoring them from icloud?
The reason i asked this question is because i have been wondering this a lot ever since i got an exchange on this ipod (and ive only had it for a few weeks now) because my last ipod had a lot of problems. so after i restored my ipod with my computer/itunes, i downloaded apps that i wanted, and then when i went to the storage to see how much storage was left, it said 0 bytes. i was freaking out because i didnt know how that could be, i mean, cause like, that is impossible when i just 'purchased' it, that the space was full but i looked and all my pictures were on this ipod and i already put them on my computer so i dont need them anymore thats why i wanna reset it now so there is nothing on it so i can have more space for stuff to do and download on it.
it is updated to iOS 8 but that happened when i purchased it, so i didnt have a choice to update it even though i didnt want to update to iOS 8...
and i hope you understand my problem..
i would REALLY REALLY appreciate it if someone could tell me a solution to my problem!!! thank you so much!
    -sierra

Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. Hope this helps. Good luck. Cheers.

    Hi James_uk,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with factory reset on your ThinkPad E530.
If you have not done any changes in the HDD partition, you can use F11 to perform the system recovery.
Below is the link where you can download the user manual to know the complete details on preinstalled OS.

  • Hp officejet/deskjet 4625 fax function disabled after a factory reset.

Officejet/Deskjet 4625 Fax function disabled after a factory reset.
    - HP 4625
    - Fax function disabled after a factory reset, fax function disabled on fax machine.
Good day HP community! I have a problem on my Hp officejet/deskjet 4625 after i did a factory reset. Oh by the way my printer is on a wireless connection setup and its ip address kept on changing and became very annoying so i decided to do the factory reset. After the factory reset i visited a "teach me to how to re-setup the wireless connection for Hp officejet/deskjet 4625" i downloaded the file needed on the installation and followed the steps but I failed. Here is the LINK.
My installation failed during the "connect the usb cable from the printer to the computer" sequence. I plugged the usb cable waited patiently but after a long 30 minutes wait nothing happened. The full feature installer of the Hp officejet/deskjet 4625(OJ4620**) didnt work for me. Luckily i have a friend that had a  basic installer of the Hp officejet/deskjet 4620(DJ4620**) sent me via e-mail. I wonder what is the difference between OJ4620 and DJ4620 installers were, but thanks to my friend the DJ4620 worked. I finished the installation and the wireless connection setup was successfull!
Now i can print via usb cable connection, network ssid connection & tru apple products. I just have one problem. My printer's fax function was disabled. I believe that the OJ4620 had an issue on win7 64bit OS, i also believe that the DJ4620 isnt capable on installing the fax function because it was only a basic installer.
I tried to search in the internet but to no avail, I cannot find a HP 4620 fax installer either an officejet installer nor a deskjet installer.
    My machines:
    Desktop - 64bit
    Netbook - 64bit
    Macbook Pro
    Macbook Air
    Hp officejet/deskjet 4625
I badly need help on the fax functions because my small office need it everyday. I hope someone can help me here. Thanks in advance!

    Hello theEGG.
Thank you for your detailed response. I understand after installing printer you are unable to use your Fax features. Any HP printer full feature software package already comes with the fax features.
Please uninstall your software. I am going to provide a HP document to help you: Uninstall The Software. After this progress is done please move onto the next step: (This is only for your Windows computers)
How to clean Temp Folder. In this document there is two ways to clean out the Temp folder. Please choose which option you are conformable with.
To install the software, please use the:Printer Install Wizard. Make sure you leave the USB cord out of the computer until it props you to insert the USB cord.
If you have any other questions please let me know.

  • I need a font book factory reset & a clean slate

My font book is is a mess!  I have duplicate fonts in about 4 different directories (my fault) and want a fresh start.  I did an "export" of my fonts but I am unsure how to do a factory reset.  I've read the Font Management in OS X doc but am unclear if clearing the cache will bring me back to just the basic system fonts or only clears the history.
Do I need to go in and delete ("file ----> remove font") the fonts in font book one by one and THEN clear the cache before reinstalling the ones I want in the ONE directory folder where I want them to live?  (lesson learned).  I have 1200 (not including the duplicates) fonts that I need to sift through and am looking for the fastest way to do this without losing the key system fonts for Mac, Office 2011 and Adobe CS5 Creative Suite.
Is that amount of installed fonts still manageable with font book or should I be looking at a different font management solultion?  I can't answer that for myself until I make it manageable with only ONE copy of each font
Thanks in advance for your help!  I promise that I've read through this site and have been googling all day but haven't been sure about resetting the it all back to square one
    Tara

There isn't an easy, singular answer to your question, though it would be fairly straightforward if it weren't for Office. I am curious how you arrived at 4 directories of fonts. There are only three Fonts folders OS X looks at. The ones in the System folder, the main Library folder, and the one in the active user account. Since you shouldn't even be looking in the System folder (if you don't know what you're doing), the only two places you should have any fonts you've added would be the main Library and your account.
Anyway, start by launching Font Book. Delete any Font sets or Library sets you have created. Close Font Book. Create a new folder on the desktop. Call it "mine". Anything you want really, just so it refers to the fonts in your user account. Go to the Fonts folder in your user account and move all fonts out of that folder to the new one on the desktop. Create another new folder on the desktop named "lib". Open the /Library/Fonts/ folder and move all fonts into the second new folder. Both the /Library/Fonts/ folder, and the Fonts folder in your user account should be empty.
Follow the instructions at the bottom of Font Management in OS X to restore all fonts from the Snow Leopard DVD. You will be using Pacifist to restore both the System and Library fonts. When you're done, your fonts will be back to the way the were when you first installed OS X.
From the desktop folder you named "lib". Move Hoefler Text.ttc and STHeiti Medium.ttc to the /Library/Fonts/ folder. Replace the versions you just restored with these newer versions. They were updated in 10.6.5.
Office 2011 installs many newer versions of fonts OS X comes with. Move these fonts from the 'lib" folder into the /Library/Fonts/ folder so you again replace the ones you just restored.

Here's where it gets a bit trickier. Office 2011 also installs a number of old fonts which conflict with the newer .ttf OpenType fonts. Delete these from the "lib" folder on your desktop. Note that they do not have a file extension.

Without being able to see what you have left in the "lib" folder, I can't easily say what you can move back into the /Library/Fonts/ folder. So I'll list everything else Office 2011 installs that you can move back in. Office uses many of these for its supplied templates. Cambria is the default font family for Word.

Anything you have left in the "lib" folder on your desktop will either be duplicates, or fonts installed by other third party apps. That will essentially be true of any fonts you moved out of your user account. I can't tell you which, if any of these, would need to be moved back in. For now, combine the two into a single folder and store them away anywhere not in any of the three Fonts on the hard drive. There will be a bunch of them as CS5 installs a slew of fonts. None of which it needs to operate.
That's as far as I can help with the fonts themselves.
Now open Disk Utility and run a Repair Permissions on your startup drive. Moving the fonts around will cause them to have permissions OS X doesn't like. Mainly just because you moved them back into the /Library/Fonts/ folder and it will want to change the permissions to OS X as the owner simply because of where they are.
    Last few things to do.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
Next to take care of the System's font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
Last step when back at the desktop. Launch Font Book so it can create a new database based on the fonts currently in the drive's three Fonts folders.
There should be no duplicates. Everything OS X and Office installs will be available.

  • Data recovery after factory reset

I have seen people write that data recovery was possible after factory reset below the jelly bean OS versions on android but iphone is impossible.
So I wonder what is security technology for data protection on iphone.
Let me know security technology. (data encryption, data fromat algorithm, whatever about data protection)

Follou-up..... reading other questions/answers on this forum seem to indicate I'll have to "cherry pick" specific saved data items from the desktop "Shortcut to System Recovery Files" --- a long process.   Is there a quicker way???
