Newbie question - general question about e-mail sync

Hi,
I have a general question about email sync and BlackBerry smartphones.  Are there any devices that allow email syncing with a Microsoft Exchange 2007 system that do not require the BlackBerry Enterprise server?
Thanks; sorry if this has been asked before but I was unable to find it in the forums, documentation, etc.  Everything I found assumes that for this kind of environment you will be using a BlackBerry Enterprise solution, but I can't assume.
Thanks again.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
If the Exchange server has anything that faces the internet (OWA, POP, IMAP), then BIS can be used to handle email (only email...calendar and contacts require BES to sync OTA).
Or, a PC, inside the network (but with an internet path) and logged into the email server (using Outlook), can be left running, using the RIM Desktop Software's Desktop Redirector capability to forward  messages to the BB.
Those are basically the options.
Hope that helps! Let us know!

  • Questions about e-mail sync etc...

    Hi,
I will be setting up a new Palm Pre Plus Verizon phone soon but had a couple of questions to make sure I now what's possible.
    1) Is it possible to sync only the Calendar / Contacts from Microsoft Exchange but not the e-mail (work account)?  Can the same be done for other accounts (google, yahoo, etc...)?
    2) If not, can the Calendar/Contacts be set to automatically download but the e-mail be set for manual control (downloaded by user action only) thus choosing never to download?
    3) If so, can those preferences be set differently per individual account (Exchange vs Google vs Yahoo etc...)?
Also...I've seen several Palm reps on the posts suggesting users check out homebrew / 3rd party opportunities to customize their phones even though Palm doesn't "support them.  Can I get an overall take on whether this is a good idea or not?  Do you run the risk of ruining / breaking your phone using those types of 3rd party solutions (I would assume not if your reps are suggesting to look there...)?
Thanks very much for any input.
    FVP

    Hi,
Thank you so much, you've been a big help.
Would it be possible to bother you (or anyone in the know) with more complicated questions I've been facing trying to set up the palm?
I understand about how to Exchange (and control e-mail).
I still have questions though, on e-mail / contact setup.
My questions revolve around multiple accounts from the same place, and also AIM buddy control (and multiple AIM accounts).
Basically...is it a problem to pull in multiple Gmail accounts for example (more than 1)?  I use 2 different Gmail accounts (one for my friends / family, and one for work)?  That along with the Exchange acount?
As for AIM...I also have two AIM accounts I use (one for friends / family, one when working).  when I created both accounts, they sort of merged, and both stayed on (I wasn't able to control signing one off, keeping one on at a time)?  Am I just not finding the right settings?
Also...the contacts list was a disaster after bringing in the AIM accounts.  Even after deleting the accounts (because I couldn't get them to work right), the screennames stayed in my contacts list, and when I try to delete them (swipe away, choose delete) they say AIM profiles can't be deleted...even though the account is deleted.  Am I missing something??
I read in the manual, you are supposed to be able to stop contacts from feeding from certain accounts by choosing the menue / prerences / selecting the account / stopping the sync....but that wasn't even an option as the only "account" listed in preferences is the Palm account.
I'm just terribly confused on how to set things up and what can be controlled.  Thanks for any help you can provide (or a place I can go for this assistance).
    Thanks!

  • [Question]General Question about iphone replace

hi all, sorry for the post but cant find any answer in apple support page.
i live in israel, my family bought me iphone 3G, my wi-fi isnt working..
if i`ll give the phone to my family can they walk into apple store and replace the phone?
since day 1 phone isnt working,
i dont have recipt or at&t contract for this phone
    i do have warrenty
my family have 2 3g iphones at&t contract...
    Message was edited by: shachar

When an iPhone 3G is purchased new in the U.S., activation with AT&T and signing a two year contact with AT&T is required at the time of purchase.
If this iPhone was purchased new at an Apple Store or at an AT&T corporate store by whoever purchased this iPhone for you, this means they were required to activate the iPhone 3G and sign a two year contract with AT&T at that time.
If this iPhone that was purchased new in the U.S. is no longer activated with AT&T, the warranty will not be honored unless the iPhone is activated with AT&T. If the iPhone is activated with AT&T, you must return the iPhone to someone you know in the U.S. and have the person you know take it to an Apple Store for inspection and testing for a possible exchange under warranty.
If you have hacked this iPhone to be unlocked for use with another provider's SIM card besides AT&T, doing so is against Apple's license agreement for the iPhone, is not supported by Apple, and voids the warranty.
This iPhone must be activated with AT&T, not hacked for use with another provider's SIM card, and it must be returned to the U.S. in order for Apple to honor the warranty if the problem cannot be resolved by any other means besides an exchange under warranty.

  • General question about iTunes Match and multiple libraries

    Hello to everyone,
I have a general question about the iTunes Match service, which is available since yesterday in my country (Italy). Currently my library situation is the following:
Computer A (desktop, Windows 7): "big" iTunes library (about 20 GB), at the moment not associated with my Apple ID
Computer B (MacBook Air 2011): "small" iTunes library (about 5 GB), associated with my Apple ID
At the moment, both my iOS devices (iPhone 4 and iPad 2) are synchronized with the smaller library on the MacBook Air.
Question is as follows: should I subscribe to iTunes Match, would it be possible to upload the "big" library (provided I associate it with my Apple ID) to iCloud while keeping my devices synchronized with the "small" one?
Ideally, at the end of the day, the situation should be the following: both iOS devices with music from the small library + possibility of downloading songs from iCloud (coming from the big one). Is this possible?
Maybe the question sounds stupid, but I want to be sure about this before paying for the service.
    Thanks a lot.

Yes, you could also associate your larger library with iTunes match if you associated your Apple ID with it. However any purchases in the library made from another Apple ID will not be matched with iTunes much.
If both libraries are part of iTunes match, then all your devices will see all of the content from both libraries, which content you choose to have on those devices and which you have accessible via iTunes match is entirely up to you.

  • Mail syncing question

    Hi,
    the scenario is this:
On my macbook, 10.6, one of the POP accounts is acting strange. It's a BT internet account. Symptoms are it starts to download messages and just gets stuck. Also duplicates are appearing. I've tried deleting the message from the server via webmail, and recreating the account. The messages do reach the iPhone no problem.
So , i'm assuming that there's something lurking inside "My home directory"/Library/Mail.
I'm going to delete this Mail folder, along with Mail preferences.
The question is, can i sync the accounts (one bt internet, the other @me.com) from my iPhone / ipod to the Macbook via either MobileMe or iTunes?
Am i right in thinking that you can sync accounts from a desktop / laptop Mac to an iPhone / iPod, but you can't do the reverse?
    Many thanks in advance.

The +iPod touch+ doesn't offer Mail syncing. All it does is sync the account details. Emails are downloaded separately when you next get a suitable WiFi connection.

  • General Question about SAP Documentation. Where to find?

    Hello,
I am relatively new in the SAP business and so I have some general questions about the SAP Documentation.
    Often internet-links like
    http://help.sap.com/printdocu/core/Print46c/en/data/pdf/FIBP/FI-AP-AP-PT.pdf
are posted here by group members.
But where do these group members find these documents?
All I can see at help.sap.com is IDES (the model company created by SAP)and the WWW-version of the SAP-Bibliothek.
Were can I find these PDF-Files?
I would appreciate any hint and tip!
    Thank you!

  • Asking general questions about 'computing' matters.

    Hello
I'm new to the Mac world - I posted my first question on the forums today!
I have reviewed the discussions site - everything seems very specific to apple products. Where, if anywhere, could I post a general question - like this one:-
I have a notion that when one connects to a server directly (Usenet newsgroups for example) one makes a deliberate 'hole' in one's firewall, be it software or simply because one is using a NAT router. Sending messages to and receiving posts from Usenet is far quicker than using email, so I'm fairly confident that this is so.
I am well aware that any URL one visits can instantly determine much information about the connecting machine. (see http://www.browserreport.com/ as an example).
Anti-malware programs can only detect known viruses and spyware - I see no reason at all why, once one has granted a direct connection facility, between a group on a private server to
one's own machine, malware could not relatively simply be injected onto one's computer.
If the malware was currently unknown, how would one ever know?
Thanks in anticipation of a helpful response

    Excellent!

Unfortunately, not in this forum. This forum is specifically about the discussion forum itself. It is kind of like a meta-forum. Hopefully, the moderators will just move your post somewhere more appropriate. (As indeed they just did!)
I have a notion that when one connects to a server directly (Usenet newsgroups for example) one makes a deliberate 'hole' in one's firewall, be it software or simply because one is using a NAT router.
Kind of and kind of not. Firewalls are greatly misunderstood. But essentially, yes, any internet connection you establish has some risk involved. However, the risk of making an outgoing connection is infinitesimally smaller than setting up a server to let hackers bang on 24x7.
Sending messages to and receiving posts from Usenet is far quicker than using email, so I'm fairly confident that this is so.
    Really? I don't think so.
I am well aware that any URL one visits can instantly determine much information about the connecting machine. (see http://www.browserreport.com/ as an example).
Not really. It depends on what you are doing. You always give away your IP address, unless you are behind a proxy. In that case, you give away the proxy's IP address. But the proxy still knows who you really are.
If the protocol in question supports such information, then it can be determined. A web browser does send some information about you, but you can easily change it and masquerade as some other browser. With other protocols, it isn't so easy to tell what kind of OS or software is being used.
Anti-malware programs can only detect known viruses and spyware - I see no reason at all why, once one has granted a direct connection facility, between a group on a private server to
one's own machine, malware could not relatively simply be injected onto one's computer.
If the malware was currently unknown, how would one ever know?
    You wouldn't
Don't grant anyone direct connection to your machine.

  • General question about Mountain Lion

I've kept clear of Lion on both my MACS because of all the "bad press" it got, I'm still running Snow Leopard on my MACS and I've never had a day of problems with either. Also I run Logic Studios on both my MACS and didn't want to chance having issues with interface compatability, lack of drivers and such. My question is kind of simple and for better or worse comes down to opinion, what is the general feeling about Mountain Lion? Is it a big improvement over Lion? Is it more stable with less bugs? Any issues running Logic? I'm "playing with the idea" of upgrading but I want to do my research first. If Mountain Lion is not a big improvement over Lion or if people are having issues with running Logic I'm going to stick with SL.
Thanks for your opinions in advance.

Be cautious about listening too much to replies you're likely to get. These sort of questions in a place like this are like magnets to people who are having problems and want to complain about it. You're likely to hear some horror stories that don't represent the majority of cases.
ML has been excellent so far for me, faster than Lion and no serious bugs I've discovered so far. But if you upgrade, be sure to do your homework: backup, check compatibility of all your software (including things like printer drivers) and repair the hard drive with Disk Utility before installing.

  • Two questions about apple mail

hey everyone. i'm getting to learn a little more about apple mail these days; smoothing out Gmail IMAP synching and whatnaught. i've stumbled into the mail directory on my macbook and had some questions.
    1. the "mail downloads" folder (home/library/mail downloads). what is the significance of this folder? in the preferences, i have my default downloads saved to the main "downloads" folder. yet there is a random number of files in there; i don't think they constiute the totality of every message i've received that has a file to download, so what is the logic of those files? if i delete them will the downloads not be available from individual mail messages any longer?
    2. i see some older IMAP mailboxes for two accounts that i don't even have access to any more. they don't, however, show up on the mail app itself. is there some way to reintegrate these mailboxes (just for archival purposes, and the ability to see their messages) into the mail program?
    thanks so much!
    quin

    Aaron,
The Mail Downloads folder contents are redundant to what is kept with the messages. The most typical ways that content results in that folder are:
    1) quickly clicking the Save button on a message, rather than using a click-hold to then have the option to choose a target location of the Save;
    2) you open an attachment with another application. There Mail Downloads is only meant to be a temporary storage location. Attachments are kept as originally received with the message itself. Also, in the more recent version of Mail, it is redundantly kept in a folder within the INBOX.mbox folder named Attachments -- this is a behind the scenes behavior. It first appeared only for IMAP mailboxes, but more recently in Mail 4.x is also the case with a POP account. If unedited, then depending how you have your preference set up, attachments may be removed when Mail is quit, etc.;
    3) Mail in 10.5.x and 10.6.x seems to require the Mail Downloads folder to be created, rather than use the Downloads folder. The latter is mostly used as the location of items you click to load from a remote server, whether in a Browser or in Mail.
With respect to your old IMAP account folders or mailboxes, where have you found them? I would assume any old IMAP accounts have been deactivated in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced if in the Mail folder, but not showing in the Sidebar to Mail? It would problematic to activate an IMAP account if it can no longer contact the IMAP server. Any xxxx.imapmbox folder can be dragged from the Mail folder (after quitting Mail) to say the Desktop, renamed as xxxx.mbox folder, and then back in Mail imported to be an On My Mac mailbox for archival.
    More info, please.

  • Where to direct a general questions about foreign films subtitles?

I recently purchased a foreign film "Break Ke Badd" from the iTunes store. Although, it didn't specify that it had English subtitles, I assumed it did. After the full download, I tried to watch it and there weren't any English subs. I contacted iTunes and they more than happy to refund the money back to my account. Now after a few weeks, the iTunes store DOES list Eng subs for this film. I don't want to purchase it again and have to contact iTunes for another refund...Therefore my question is, is there a general question contact one could use to find an answer to my question. Basically, to verify that this movie, indeed has English subs before I re-purchase.
    Any info is appreciated!

Yes I know as the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/ Questions] section is more for desktop Firefox support and the place I linked to is for "Firefox OS" support in English where some who are involved with it do post in it occasionally.
I would have moved that [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/962783 thread] to the "Firefox OS" English section, however I cannot as the [https://support.mozilla.org//questions/ Questions] and [https://support.mozilla.org/forums Contributor Forums] are not the same.

  • I have a handful of general questions about Firefox OS as a consumer..

I couldn't find a better place to post this, so I'm trying on here.
I'm in the market for a tablet (high-end), and I'm holding off on getting an Android-powered one because of Firefox OS. However, I have some general questions and concerns regarding performance, software and hardware. Here they are.
    1. Is the Firefox OS interface as responsive as a native experience on say an iPad or an Android tablet? (Is there any lag on swipes between screens, button presses, etc?) If not, will it be in the future?
    2. Will I miss the Android marketplace or the Apple app store, being restricted to only HTML5 apps? Do you think this will become an irrelevant question as the HTML5 app ecosystem grows?
    3. Do you think the quality of HTML5 apps will be inferior to those from existing app stores because they are free?
    4. Will the Firefox browser be the only one available in Firefox OS? (i.e. will there be the option to use Chrome, Opera or any other browser if the user so wishes?)
    5. Will Firefox OS include useful utility apps, such as an alarm clock, a calendar, a weather app, etc?
    6. I read a lot, both on the web (news, video game reviews), as well as ebooks. Will Firefox OS on a tablet be a pleasant experience conducive to e-reading? (Will it include a good ebook reader app?)
    7. Will there be a high-end Firefox OS tablet that is comparable in specs to the Nexus 10? (i.e. impressive screen resolution, powerful CPU/GPU, lots of inputs/outputs like USB, HDMI, microSD, etc) When do you think such a device might become available?
    8. Would it be possible to flash Firefox OS onto say a Nexus 10 or other tablet or phone if one wanted to use it as their OS instead?
    Thanks!

    1. Depends on the phone but a avererage power android phone would likely cost the same as a high end firefox os phone.
    2. HTML 5 is really the future of the web, I've heard that Firefox will let you package apps to be playable offline, but not sure if thats true.
    3. I '''think''' Firefox OS may have paid apps that will be restricted to users who buy them.
    4. I think Mozilla will be nice enough to let Google and Opera make browsers. Google let Mozilla do that with FF for android.
    5. See the simulator https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/firefox-os-simulator/
    6. too early to say
    7. too early to say, but Foxconn (helps apple) makes some apple products, so yes in the future is see a high end Firefox OS tablet 2-3 years down the road.
    8. not sure
NOTE: Please note that we are only contributors, we dont develop firefox os.
You can ask more on the IRC channel as there are likely devs there.

  • General questions about using webservices and xml as opposed to an oracle driver

Dear Experts; I have a general question which I have yet to test. Is it faster to use an ODBC driver to connect and retrieve data from an Oracle database than creating a .net webservices and using an XML to get the data for your web application. THank you

At some point in the architecture stack some component will need to access the database in order to get the information from the database. That component will need to use an Oracle client driver.

  • Migrating from procmail to sieve, general question

    Hi,
I want to migrate a Mail-Server from 10.5 (postfix, procmail, cyrus) to 10.6 (postfix, sieve, dovecot) and have a general question about sieve.
The current setup on this server is quite complex with procmail-rules.
But there is only ONE procmailrc which delivers the mails as wanted (about 120 Pages of rules).
It looks like procmail isn´t maintained any more and I want to use sieve.
I read a lot of infos about sieve but can´t find an answer to this question:
"How to setup sieve to use only one sieve-script-file for all incoming AND outgoing messages?".
The above mentioned procmailrc handles incoming AND outgoing mails (e. g. Mail TO AND FROM customer X is also delivered to all users being in the group X (these groups are maintained in a FileMaker-solution and the procmailrc is created via a Script in FileMaker)).
With procmail I only had to set up the /etc/procmailrc to include "my" procmailrc. I didn´t need to setup procmailrc-files for every user (about 80 user with a quite high fluctuation, so this is not an option).
Where is the config-file I need to add an "include "my" sieve-script" with all rules (as I did with procmail)?
Does Sieve also handle outgoing Mails?
    Many thanks in advance

  • Messaging 6.x general questions

    hi,
    just some general questions -
    (a) is there a netbackup agent for doing messaging backups and message level restores (e.g. like the one for exchange). I know solstice backup has a backup agent somewhere but not sure about netbackup. any experiences with this?
    (b) is it possible for messaging/calendar to authenticate users off a different directory? i.e. just use the uid/password info from another directory i.e. novell edir. it seems like directories and ldap were supposed to make all this simple, but getting a product like messaging that is "supported" against another directory isn't in reality.
Also organisations don't seem to like having to only use messaging against sun directory as a selling point sometimes when they already have a directory. Any thoughts/experiences?
    thanks

A: imsbackup may be used with many backup packages. Granularity down to the individual user. Imsbackup/imsrestore is the recommended backup/restore technique.
B: No. Messaging Server was not designed to store part of the authenticatio data in one ldap and the rest in another. You could use Meta Directory to synchronize a portion of your other ldap to the one Messaging uses.
Some customers have successfully deployed against other Directory server, BUT . . .
    1. The installer uses non-standard, propriatary stuff, and will fail against non-sun directory servers.
    2. If there is a problem after ou successfully get install done, and you call tech support, the burdon is on you to prove that the problem is within how Messaging Server works, and is not with the non-sun directory server. So far, we haven't found any such to fix, though. I think there may be one or two customers using non sun DS.
In most cases, Meta is able to sync their ldap system with ours, and that works much better. Directory Server is the most popular LDAP server around, far as I know.

  • General question regarding environment files in APPL_TOP

Hi. I will be passing my OCP (hopefully) next month and I am now turning my head to teh Applications side since my job involves a lot of Oracle Financials.
I just did a clean installation of 11.5.10.2 but at the level of seeting environment files, my boss swooped in and did them all. I would love to know which ones need changing, or even which ones do what ...
I am using the Oracle doc Re: Generate the Database Context File
to follow with, but what I see before me in our own (9i, AIX 5.2) set up doesnt always mirror what the doc says.
I need some general information about these env. files. In our <ORA>APPL directory we have the following env. files:
    APPSORA.env
    DEV.env
    DEV_davidcl.env
    APPSDEV_davidcl.env
DAVIDCUST.env (I have changed our firm's name to David)
In the doc, it explains that there is a "main applications env file", and a consolidated applications file". <CONTEXT_NAME>.env and APPS<CONTEXT_NAME>.env respectively. Which ones are those in my directory listing?
I have also checked in the .profile of the appcldev and the appdbdev users, and they both point to the same two environment files -
    $APPL_TOP/DAVIDCUST.env
    and
    $APPL_TOP/APPSORA.env
Sorry this is a bit scrambled message - is there any other source out there to explain environment files?
    Thanks
    DA

Thanks - they are the same! That's why the DEV_davidcl.env has all the parameters that according to the doc APPDDEV_davidcl.env should have.
Thanks - very helpful. The DBA here never has any time to explain this stuff, since I think he's been doing it for so long that he doenst understand why anyone would not know it too. Its very hard working for him sometimes since nothing is explained.
All of my questions are stemming from this clean installation of 11.5.2 that I have done.
I am still wondering about the .profiles of each user we have on the system though. I understand that we had to copy the profiles from TEST to this, our DEV side, then we edited the profiles to match the DEV parameters. Fine.....but the actual .env files themselves - I am looking at them and dont understand at all.
Each .profile and each user are as follows:
    appdbdev:
    appdbdev@TEST:more .profile
    APPL_TOP=/oradbi3/oracle/testappl;export APPL_TOP
    . $APPL_TOP/DAVIDCUST.env
    . $APPL_TOP/APPSORA.env
    appcldev:
    appcldev@TEST:more .profile
    APPL_TOP=/oracli3/oracle/devappl;export APPL_TOP
    . $APPL_TOP/DAVIDCUST.env
    . $APPL_TOP/APPSORA.env
So these two, both on the cl node, appear to be pointing to same env files.
    Then comes the db node:
    oradbdev:
    oradbdev@TEST:more .profile
    . /oradbi3/oracle/devdb/9.2.0/DEV_daviddb.env
    . /oradbi3/oracle/devappl/DAVIDCUST.env
I think I can understand the .env that are pointed to on the cl node, but I dont understand the oradbdev .profile, since its pointing to oradbi3/oracledevdb for one env file, then oradbi3/oracle/devappl for another.
I asked our DBA about this, and he said "dont worry about it". I have to try and run the script to start the application server this morning, but every time I try to su to the db node user I get this:
    doralcl:/> su - appdbdev
    .profile[2]: /oradbi3/oracle/devappl/DAVIDCUST.env: not found.
Like I mentioned, I pinted this out to our DBA and he told me not to worry.
