Newbie question here on Time Capsule

Hello Everyone
I searched the forum for this, but I couldn't find it so I will ask it here. I recently started thinking of getting a time capsule for my iMac. But here is my question. From what I understand it is a router as well. I already have a router (NetGear WNR834B v2) connected to my broadband. Is it possible to just have the time capsule connect to my current wireless network? Or would I be forced to trash my current router and just use the Capsule? I am not looking to extend the range of my wireless router, the time capsule will be in the same room as my router at any rate, I just dont want to have to run wires all over my room! Any help or guidance would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Jeremy

Hello holepunch. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
i have a pc & a mac, the pc has the modem & router hooked up to it & my mac picks it up wirelessly. i have bought a time capsule and am wondering, does it replace my existing router? or do i hook it up to the router and then to the pc?
You actually have several options and will really depend on what you are trying to accomplish with your network. I assume that your PC is wired-only and the iMac can either be wired or wireless ... correct? Will both computers be in the same location? Is the current modem & router co-located with the computers?
What would you like the Time Capsule (TC) to do? Just provide a destination for Time Machine backups? ... or you would like to use it as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device? ... or both?
Since your post is similar but different than the OP's, I suggest that you start a new post and describe your current network with greater details, like the make/model of all of your network devices, and what you will like to do with the TC. Thanks!

  • Some questions about a Time Capsule

    Hi!!
I just have a few questions about a Time Capsule, but first let me explain the backgroud to my questions.
I live in a 2 floor house(including a basement) and my bedroom is downstairs. My parents currently have a desktop PC connected to our wireless router and our printer. Me and my step-father both have 13 inch MacBook Pros, and he uses the Mac like a basic computer, so the equipment connected to our PC is good for him. I, on the other hand, use my Mac, iPad and iPhone to their fullest potential. I am a SUPER MEGA NERD when it comes to computers, so I plan on making my bedroom an amazing office at the same time. So I want an AirPrint Enabled printer in my bedroom (Under 100$$) along with a Time Capsule to back up my information, because everyday I look around in the backdoor of my Mac alot, and if I jack anything up (And I cant handle the problem) I would like to restore my Mac to a previous version. So here are my questions:
    1) My bedroom is right underneath our router, so i get GREAT Wi-Fi in my room. If I get a Time Capsule, can I use it in my room to extend my Wi-Fi, and how would that work? Will it extend my wifi under the same name, because I would like my own Wi-Fi (Titled to what I want with my own password)
    2) If I have to create a NEW Wi-Fi network, how would I do that?
    3) Would I need to connect my new printer directly to my ROUTER, or could I connect it to the TIME CAPSULE?
If you don't understand what I'm trying to ask (Even though I feel like it's self-explanatory)
ONE question about the PRINTER: Do any of you have any recommendations for an AirPrint Enabled printer under 100$? Even under-150$ would be okay.
    THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!!!

everyday I look around in the backdoor of my Mac alot, and if I jack anything up (And I cant handle the problem) I would like to restore my Mac to a previous version. So here are my questions:
Don't just depend on TM.. use a disk image type utility.. either one of the Mac tools, SuperDuper, CCC, Chronosync or even a linux boot cd (if you have a cd/dvd drive still or via usb can boot) a great tool is Clonezilla.. it will do basically any computer, Mac, Linux, Windows.. and since it boots into its own OS can restore a computer in a flash. Then you can add the incremental changes from TM.
Actually I am surprised you get good wireless as usually directly above or below a router is often the worst spot. Time Capsule cannot extend the wireless of any other router than Apple.. it is a special system and only Apple can join the club. It has bad effect though, if you set the TC to extend wireless it turns off ethernet ports.. which is hugely dumb.
The best arrangement is ethernet to the upstairs.. or EOP adapters. If not then a wireless router that matches the existing unit will generally be better than mixing apple and non-apple.
    2) If I have to create a NEW Wi-Fi network, how would I do that?
    3) Would I need to connect my new printer directly to my ROUTER, or could I connect it to the TIME CAPSULE?
You create a new wireless network by selecting manually the wireless channel and use different wireless name, ssid and security. There are 3 available channels on 2.4ghz.. your existing router will use one or two.. depending on if the setting is 20mhz or 40mhz.. so you need to manually set everything and not use auto.
TC is slow on 2.4ghz cf 5ghz and there are many more channels at 5ghz but not everything can use it.. iphone for instance is 2.4ghz only . whereas ipad can use 5ghz.. most full computers now can use 5ghz.
Buy a wireless network printer. Or alternatively an ethernet network would be also ok but now are more expensive than wireless ones. Network printers are not much more than straight USB and work much better.
I do not use airprint so have nothing to offer.. find the best HP model in your budget.. but others may have had more experience.. I use ethernet connected b/w laser business type HP.. they work great.. but airprint is too recent an innovation for me.

  • Encryption Questions: FileVault 2, Time Capsule, 1Password

Hello...Newbie here. I have FileVault 2 turned on and Time Machine backs up to Time Capsule.
When I'm logged in, does this mean all my data is unencrypted? If so, does that mean my Time Machine backups are unencrypted on Time Capsule which cannot be encrypted?
Since FileVault is on, does this mean encrypted 1Password info is then unencrypted when it's backed up on Time Capsule?
    Any info is appreciated.

Something else to keep in mind here:
I recently went about upgrading my MBP to a SSD.  I have Lion and I'm using File Vault 2 because I handle medical data and HIPAA states that I have to...  I'm also using Time Machine (it's not a Time Capsule, it's a Netgear ReadyNAS but it works the same way).  The Time Machine sparsebundle is not encrypted.
So, to do the switch, I pulled the encrypted HD out of my MBP and put in the SSD.  I then booted from a Snow Leopard DVD and went about the 'Restore from Time Machine' route.  I was able to find the drive, hook in to the TM sparsebundle and do the restore.
Once the restore was finished and had rebooted it behaved very strangely, apps crashed, status bar didn't seem to load correctly, Finder crashed constantly, the machine was SLOWER.  Not good.  I figured it was a bum drive so I got another one (same brand, model, etc...).  Another restore with the same results.
NOTE: I also tried doing a fresh install of Snow Leopard with the intent of upgrading to Lion right away and pulling my files back from TM but I couldn't even install a fresh install of Snow Leopard.  I've since learned that not every SSD will work in every system.
Before returning the drives I wanted to wipe them both clean so I put one of them in to an enclosure I have and plugged it in.  I was shocked (although perhaps I shouldn't have been) to see that nothing on the drive was encrypted.  I could access every file on the file system with out an issue.
I had assumed that if I encrypted the drive and then made a TM backup that a restore would create an exact copy of the old drive, including encryption.
In my case it appears that the Kingston drives I was trying to use are not compatible.  I've since returned them both (both wiped clean) and ordered a drive from Crucial which, I'm told, will be compatible.  But in the back of my mind I'm left wondering if the Crucial drive will have the same sorts of issues and if I'm really just left with the single choice of building the drive from scratch and then bringing my data back piece by piece.
One additional note of interest:  You can create an encrypted sparsebundle and use that in Time Capsule (or some other NAS like mine) very easily and it should work just fine.
So, what's my point here?  Well, there are two things:
    1) Make sure you get a SSD that's compatible with your system as they're not all the same.
    2) If you are using FileVault 2 and backing up using TM (regardless of whether you have encrypted the sparsebundle or not) you might want to try restoring to see how/if it works.  It may simply be that you can't just restore from TM if you have an encrypted HD.
Honestly, it's not often (in fact it's very rare) that I find myself in a position when I need to restore from TM like this so maybe doing a clean install each time isn't such a huge deal but still it would be nice if it worked as advertised OR these sorts of issues were thought through and addressed.

  • Question on hooking time capsule up.

I am looking to buy a time capsule, but first need to know a couple things, so anyone who could help me I would gladly appreciate it.  First question:  I currently have a modem and a wireless router hooked up at my house, which runs fine.  I was just wondering if the time capsule will detect the wireless router without being hooked up to the modem or router by a wire/chord?  I'm just looking to use the time capsule for the wireless hard drive purpose and that is it, I don't need to set up a new network or anything.  I have broken many portable hard drives because they were hooked in my laptop and without thinking picked up and moved my laptop and the portable falls and hits the ground.  I want the time capsule because of no chords and it will remain in one place.

I guess, I should just call apple.  Don't know who to trust.
Please call Apple. They will vouch for me. Level 9 might be a clue.
TeHPwN has a way to go........about 8 years.

  • From Nabil Houlika Germany. Please help me by answering the following questions. The Time Capsule suddenly went dead. What should I do? Is there a way to put it "ON" again??

Yesterday the time capsule light went off. All efforts to put it on again failed. All electric connections are in good order and working perfectly. Please help me.

    Hi again,
I called them this morning. Admits my allergies and sneezing I was able to talk to them.
They will replace it with basically no questions asked.
I guess also having a MBP under AppleCare also helped too as the case is registered under that.
They gave me a few options.
The could take my credit card number as insurance and send me a new one and them I send them my dead one back, or I could take it into an Apple Store for a replacement there. The problem is that I have data on there that I want to maintain, so they said take it to the Apple Store or an Apple Service provider and they would handle the transfer.
I don't have an Apple Store in my city, but have a Service Provider that I know that could do the transfer for me, but I kinda want to do it at the Apple Store because maybe then they would give me a new one instead of another w year tombstone.
So I need to weigh my options.
I'll let you know further what happens.
P.S. my serial number was not in the range listed, but that didn't seem to make a difference. I think the key is to be courteous, respectful and friendly.

  • Question about the Time Capsule as an external hard drive...

i know this might be a kind of dumb question, but does the time capsule also work as an external hard drive where i would be able to just drag and save whichever files i want...or does it only save files through backing up in time machine??? thank you in advance

You don't need to consider FAT32 formatting for PC access.
The closet thing to a "format" of the TC disk is via "erase" command in the Airport Utility. There's no consideration of truly formatting or in what format the disk would be laid out. For the USB attached drive the same applies when it is attached to the TC, but of course it can be formatted when directly attached to a PC or Mac.
It is, in fact, often recommended that a USB attached drive be formatted as HFS+.
The fact that the drive (either the TC drive or a USB attached drive) are accessed via network protocols as a network disk insulates the useing machine from the physical drive format details to a large degree.
I have a TC with a USB attached drive. Both the TC drive and the USB attached drive are formatted as HFS+ but appear on Windows XP machines as:
    Type: Network Drive
    File system: FAT32
There has been a lot of discussion of this in this forum:

  • Question about wiring Time Capsule

Just bought a 2 TB Time Capsule but haven't hooked it up.
Currently, I'm using an old D-link wireless router that's hooked up with the cable going first into the router, then out to my primary iMac. Our other two computers connect to it wirelessly
With Time Capsule, should I hook it up to my iMac in this same manner, or would it be better just to let it communicate wirelessly?
Or does it even make a difference?

Connecting your iMac wirelessly vs by ehternet cable?
It shouldn't make any difference either way, it's up to your preferences and desires.

  • Newbie question here re: character styles

    Greetings,
I am a newbie with regards to InDesign, so bear with me.
I know that I can create styles in the usual way, but can I also create a style by using an existing piece of text and saving it's attributes?
    Thank you very much.
    Rob

Yes. Just click in the formatted text and create the style.
As a newbie, you may want to watch some video tutorials and step through a few lessons to get a good foundation. Here's a good place to start:

  • Newb Question here! What is SAP?

Is SAP a set of development Tools? like Oracle APEX or GT although not limited to the oracle Database technologies ?
I have been looking about and find it very difficult to find a section for people wanting to find out about what SAP is.
    Many thanks
    David

Welcome David.  You've just had the benefit of getting a very good answer to an exceedingly broad and difficult question from one of the most ardent and active members of our community, Blag, so you are in good hands although you probably wouldn't know that if you are totally new here.
On the website http://www.sap.com you would find an introduction to SAP the company, its history, and its products.  There you can read the more explanatory and historical and company side of "what is SAP" found, for example: [here|http://www.sap.com/about/company/history.epx].
But to distinguish that flavor of "What is SAP", from what you might expect here is perhaps less simple to point you to.  You have come to the website of the SAP Community Network, (the SAP Developer Network(SDN) and Business Process Expert Community(BPX)), which represents the community side of SAP, its customers, users, developers, partners, business process professionals, employee contributors.  It's a social and learning framework. That's the people side of the equation.  People using tools and products and sharing knowledge about these inter-enterprise business solutions.  And in the coffee corner, which is this forum you have posted to just now, you will also find folks sometimes just chatting about the state of the industry or the quality of the conversation.  To understand what that means, you are invited to stick around, visit forums, search for content, listen, ask.  Welcome David to SDN and BPX.

  • Newbie questions - interruptions to time machine backups?

    hi all.
i have just purchased an extrnal hdd and am using time machine to back up the 430ish gigs worth of data on my macbook pro. I am in something of a hurry [I have to go somewhere with this laptop and it's backed up about 11 gigs so far] and I would like some advice.
    1. When it is backing up, can I continue saving files and working normally with applications such as Adobe Illustrator and Logic, or will this interrupt the process? I'd like to continue my work but don't want to stop the backup
    2. When it is backing up, can I also transfer files manually onto the drive [such as a folder full of music?]
    3. If the process is interrupted in any way, does it need to start again from scratch or will it 'remember' where it was up to?
Thank you very much for your help and time

    1. Yes
    2. Yes
    3. No, it will remember.
TM is created to work seamlessly with your Mac, it shouldn't matter what you are doing. If disconnected or stopped TM will pick up where it left off.

  • Okay newbie question here.

I am about to start pulling my hair out. I have my new mac here, my new copy of logic express 7 , my new m-audio keyboard and a whole lot of music in my head ready to go on the screen. My problem is i have read and read through the manual (reads like an alien wrote it). I have done my searches on this site also for all my answers and no help either, spent 2 days trying to figure this out, this is my last resort. I have used garage band now and everyhting is so simple to use plug in and go. In logic obivously its not. The computer sees the keyboard but no sound is heard. Im not that great at this yet so can anyone help me. I have gone and ordered the logic training books but they wont be here for a while and would like to start doin something with all this equipment. I need a pretty simple explanation of what i am doin wrong or right. i have tried everything. thank you for all your help .

No sound coming out. This could be one of 2 things.
    1. midi data in the Arrange/matrix edit window is not going to a software instrument. You will need to insert an instrument on the channel strip. Try opening a garage band file, one that works in GB. Do you get sound now? You should because the GB file will open the appropriate software instruments to get the same sounds as you had in GB. If not then
    2. Under the Audio menu you need to select your hardware drivers. This is basically the same as in Audi/Midi setup, but if you have something wrong here the sound won't go to your sound card. In essense, Logic can send to an output other than the ones set up in Audio/MIDI setup, so you need to make sure Logic is sending it where you want it to go.

  • Dumb newbie question, here it goes...

    Hello all!
I'm sure this is going to sound absolutely ridiculous, but,
how do you define the page dimensions in CS3?
I have found the thing at the bottom of the page, with the
drop down menu, but this does not seem to lock the size.
I just want my pages to be veiwable in 800x600 and whenever i
check it on the web my background comes up as a series of tiles.
    !!!Please help!!!
Thanks very much guys and girls for looking and any help will
    be much appreciated!!
    Darren

    > I'm sure this is going to sound absolutely ridiculous,
    but, how do you
    > define the page dimensions in CS3?
You don't. You build your page so that no contiguous adjacent
    content on it
is wider than the smallest browser viewport width you want to
    support
without dropping horizontal scrollbars. And, you don't worry
    about height
at all. The shape of the contents determins height.
    > I have found the thing at the bottom of the page, with
    the drop down menu,
    > but
    > this does not seem to lock the size.
That's correct. It only adjusts the size of your document
    viewport to the
selected values so that you can see how your page fits in
    those dimensions.
I rarely use it (actually, never).
    > I just want my pages to be veiwable in 800x600 and
    whenever i check it on
    > the
    > web my background comes up as a series of tiles.
Well, no, you want your page to be seen in an 800px wide
    browser viewport
without a horizontal scrollbar. Actually you would want to
    make the page
about 760px wide to fit on a maximized browser window on an
    800x600 screen.
    > and whenever i check it on the
    > web my background comes up as a series of tiles.
Of course - that's how backgrounds work. They tile to fill
    the available
space. If you do not want them to tile, then you have to tell
    the browser
not to do that. The best way is to use CSS and the
    'background-repeat'
    style, e.g.,
    body { background-repeat:no-repeat; }
(this will prevent any background image applied to the body
    tag from
    repeating (or 'tiling').

Get a good (or even a mediocre) book on HTML and CSS and
    spend some time
with it. DW will be ever so much easier after doing that.

  • Stupid newbie question here: When setting up for hot sync, both PC and smartphone will ask for "device name" but how do I know which devide I'm naming? If I'm on the phone, do I specify the phone or the computer; and vice versa.

Hello and thank you for using the Palm Help Forums!
It's more like naming the partnership. By "naming" your device is doesn't do anything harmful. If you name it Pat's Treo, when syncing it tot he computer, hotsync will say "Syncing with Pat's Treo." You can name your device Fido for all it matters.

  • Considering buying time capsule have some Mac address related questions

    Hi,
as mentioned above I'm considering buying a time capsule for backup and wifi purposes.
My internet providers connection depends upon a set Mac address from the first computer you register with, the system works with any router which then clones the MAC address and issues a wifi signal to all computers. I don't have access to the origional computer which we registered our connection on, it went to the great computer graveyard in the sky and I have no record of the Mac address.
I Would like to use the time capsule system as a router and remove my existing router. my questions
can the time capsule spoof or clone a Mac address ?
I Don't want to be offline while we deal with technical support as they are quite inept sometimes.
Is it in this case really plug and play ? Can I just plug it in set it up on my Mac and away it goes where other non Apple devices can use the wifi.
Without the existing router the cable that comes into the house connect directly to the ' original ' computer and the Internet only works on that computer
hope  someone can help me I would like to purchase this device

The Time Capsule cannot clone a MAC address, so quite simply, the product is not for you.

  • Question about Time Capsule and Spotlight

I have a simple question about using Time Capsule and Spotlight. Is everything that goes on to Time Capsule indexed into Spotlight? It would appear so but when I search for something (that is still on my hard drive and also backed up to Spotlight) only the local copy appears. Would it be that it finds the closest copy and if that were not there it would point to the Time Capsule copy? Thanks in advance for clarifying this for me.

The automatic setup in the airport utility has changed something.
Is the line down to the TC from the express dotted.. in other words is wireless??
    Funny stuff happens.
Please post the screenshots of the 3 pages from the airport utility setup for both airport express and TC..
Make sure wireless is set to off in the express.
Both should be set to dhcp on the internet tab and both set to off bridge mode on the network tab.
So for example the bridge on the network tab.
The summary page can also be a help.
There is a half summary page when you click the item in the airport utility.
There is also a fully summary page, when you hold option key and double click the TC icon for example.
