Newbie question - import jpeg convert to objects

I have a manuscript in pen and ink.  It uses two cartoon characters and contains bubble text and drawings.  I had the content scanned and converted to a pdf file.  This was then converted to jpeg files, one for each page.  I want to edit these files in Illustrator by creating objects from the images on the page.  I have not been able to see how to do this.  First, is there a way to do this?  Second, if you could point me in the right direction it would be really helpful.

try Live Trace. and then try each
preset. you will see this when you import a raster image I believe.
You can then expand to seperate all objects.

  • Newbie Question: Importing (from PC) and Organizing Photos in iPhoto

    Hi everyone,
I am currently a PC user and am contemplating buying an iMac, and I'm trying to determine if iPhoto will meet my needs for photo importing and organization.
I currently have around 20-30 gigs of digital photos and am using Windows Photo Gallery (for Windows Vista) to view/organize/import them.
The directories are organized by the photo date taken in the format "yyyy-mm-dd" .
Some of these directories are appended with an event name if applicable, i.e. "2011-12-25_Christmas Party" while others will only have the date, i.e. "2011-12-20"
My photos are named according to date/time taken so that a file listing will display the photos in chronologic order. Again, some of these will be appended with an event name or other descriptive label. So, many photos will look like this: "yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss" while others will look like this: "yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss_event name"
A possible complicating factor in all of this is that some of the photos were taken with a camera where the time/date was not set properly, or with cameras whose date/times were set for a different time zone. I adjusted this within Windows Photo Gallery, but I am not sure if it permanently changed the date/time in the photo file's properties... I've seen some evidence that it may not have. I did make sure that the file name was named according to the correct date/time in every case, however.
Now, here are my questions about using iPhoto:
    1) When I initially import my photos into iPhoto, will iPhoto recognize (or is there a way to make it recognize) each separate directory as a separate event based on the directory in which it is found?
    2) If I copy photos into iPhoto library, will it respect and preserve my directory structure wherein photos are separated by date taken? If not, then is it practical to still use iPhoto without copying the files into its library (by keeping them organized as subdirectories in a directory elsewhere and having iPhoto setup to automatically display photos in that directory)?
    3) If I use iPhoto to import pictures from a digital camera, can I control how it sorts those pictures into directories by making it name the directories in yyyy-mm-dd format? This is what Windows does and I find that format very convenient for organizing and viewing photo files, especially those that I have not yet tagged.
    4) Again, if I use iPhoto to import pictures from a digital camera, can I control the naming convention so that photos are named according to date&time taken (i.e. yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss ), or at least according to just date taken (i.e. yyyy-mm-dd) as well as appended with event names?
    5) Will I be able to edit photo properties, such as date taken, within iPhoto if I discover that a photo is incorrectly organized?
    Thanks in advance,
    JB

Here's the thing: You've put a lot of time developing a system of managing files. iPhoto is all about Photos. So, frankly. forget your current system and use iPhoto. it has more powerful and more varied tools for managing your snaps.
There's a conceptual leap to be made with apps like iPhoto. The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
All of your queries are about files and filenames and file storage. They're all pretty much moot if you use iPhoto. If you use iPhoto it becomes the "go-to" app for all your photos. Everything you need to do with the photos can be done via iPhoto or with iPhoto.
When I initially import my photos into iPhoto, will iPhoto recognize (or is there a way to make it recognize) each separate directory as a separate event based on the directory in which it is found?
Yes, but...  Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken. You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.
Albums are a much more varied and powerful organising tool.
    2) If I copy photos into iPhoto library, will it respect and preserve my directory structure wherein photos are separated by date taken?
Well forget about "directories", you're talking Events, Album and Folders now. But yes, you can define Events (or Albums) based on date. However, given that iPhoto can sort on date, can search on date and date ranges and can generate Smart Albums based on date (say, All the Photos from 2010, only the photos from June 2010 or just the photos fron June 10, 2010, or even the photos from May 12 2009 to July 11 2010) how the fies are organised on the disk is of little concern. You never access them via the HD anyway.
If not, then is it practical to still use iPhoto without copying the files into its library (by keeping them organized as subdirectories in a directory elsewhere and having iPhoto setup to automatically display photos in that directory)?
Yes you can do this. It's called a Referenced Library. I don't recommend it - especially for a new Mac user - and it adds nothing except complexity to the process. It has no extra capability. It's just dumb file storage. For more on this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0
    3) If I use iPhoto to import pictures from a digital camera, can I control how it sorts those pictures into directories by making it name the directories in yyyy-mm-dd format?
    No.
This is what Windows does and I find that format very convenient for organizing and viewing photo files, especially those that I have not yet tagged.
There are various tools in iPhoto that will allow you to find photos that you have not yet tagged or organised.
Again, if I use iPhoto to import pictures from a digital camera, can I control the naming convention so that photos are named according to date&time taken (i.e. yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm-ss ), or at least according to just date taken (i.e. yyyy-mm-dd) as well as appended with event names?
You can add titles to photos, yes. But as the date and time of the photo are already in the Exif, using those in the name of the photo is a bit redundant.
Will I be able to edit photo properties, such as date taken, within iPhoto if I discover that a photo is incorrectly organized?
    Yes.
It's a bit to take in I know, and I always suggest to people that the best thing is to create a library on their Mac, import a couple of hndred pics and explore what it does (and doesn't), and see if it works for you.
iPhoto uses a lot of virtualisation. Photos are stored in the Library. (Events are just one of two possible views of the Library). Albums reference photos in the Library. So a shot can be in any number of albums and use no extra disk space. Keywording is also very powerful. Here’s a stock answer I use for folks when wondering what iPhoto can do:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
Finally, all of this can be exported from iPhoto should you decide to migrate to a different app or different OS in a year or two.

  • Newbie question : import statements

So, i'm a complete java newbie trying to make his first swing application, a basic calc. I download NetBeans 6.5, install it, and begin to code. I quickly learn about the Matisse GUI editor, find it very easy to use, and in a couple hours, the work is done and runs very fine.
But looking at my code, I realize I have forgotten all import statements (like import javax.swing, import java.awt.event ....), nevertheless the application runs fine. I suppose then that the Netbeans compiler automatically corrects my mistakes, but I want to do it right.
So, I write the import statements explicitly in my code and I get a warning message : "import unused". After that, I find out about the "fix import" tool in Netbeans, use it and all my import statements disappear. I guess i'm missing something here.
I thought import of swing classes were mandatory to write a swing application. I have NO import statement in my code, even if I'm using jFrames, jButtons, event handlers and the program works fine, why ?
Would I be able to compile this importless code in another environment (let's say Eclipse or even javac) ?
I'm using JDK 1.6 and Netbeans 6.5 with Windows XP.
    TIA

    glawen wrote:
Ok, thanks for the answers, and sorry for my misinterpretation of BigDaddyLoveHandles's first post. I understand now, the import statements are useful only if you don't want to write full class names, and the generated code uses full class names so no import needed. Please also understand BigDaddyLoveHandles's latest post. If you learn to code Swing with NetBeans' Matisse, then you will be learning Matisse, not Swing. When it comes time to try to tweak or upgrade your program, you will be lost. Better is to learn Swing from the ground up by going through the Sun Swing tutorials. Though having said that, if you are very new to the language, better still is to learn the fundamentals of Java first before embarking in the murky waters of GUI programming. Best of luck to you in your endeavors.

  • Newbie question about entity and view objects

    Hi everyone,
My first ADF application in JDeveloper is off to a difficult start. Having come from a forms background, I know that it is necessary avoid using post-query type lookups in order to have full filtering using F11/Ctrl+F11. This means creating an CRUDable view and getting as much of the lookup data as possible into the view without losing the ability to modify the data. In JDeveloper, I do not know how to build my data model to support that. My thought was to start with a robust updateable view as my main CRUD EO and then create a VO on top of that with additional EOs or VOs. But, I have found that I cannot add VOs to another VO. However, if I link the VOs then I have a master-detail which will not work for me.
For example, I have two joins to CSI_INST_EXTEND_ATTRIB_V shown in the queries below and need to have that show in the table displaying the CRUD VO’s data. It seemed that the best way to do this is to create a CSI_INST_EXTEND_ATTRIB_V entity object and view object. The view object would have two parameters, P_INSTANCE_ID and P_ATTRIBUTE name. Both the building and the unit are needed on the same record, and this is not a master-detail even though it might look that way. (A master-detail data control will not work for me because I need all this data to appear on the same line in the table.) So, I need help figuring out the best way to link these to the main (CRUD) view; I want as much of this data as possible to be filterable.
    select
    cieav.attribute_value
    from
    csi_inst_extend_attrib_v cieav
    where cieav.instance_id = p_instance_id
    and cieav.attribute_code = 'BUILDING NAME'
    select
    cieav.attribute_value
    from
    csi_inst_extend_attrib_v cieav
    where cieav.instance_id = p_instance_id
    and cieav.attribute_code = 'UNIT NAME'
Ultimately, I need to display a ton of data in each record displayed in the UI table, so a ton of joins will be needed. And, I need to be able to add records using the UI table also.
    James

    Hi Alejandro,
Sorry if I caused confusion with my first post. What I had in mind assumed that I could have a single CSI_INST_EXTEND_ATTRIB_V EO with a BuildingVO and UnitVO on top of it. So, I wrote the queries individually to show how I would invoke each view. When I realized that confused the issue, I rewrote the query to explain things better.
Now having seen your 2 queries. You need to create 2 EO. One for each table. Then create an association between the 2 aeO (this will be the join you are talking about). Then, you need to create a VO based on one of the EO and after you can modify and add the second EO (in here you select the join type).
After your done with this, youll have 1 VO that supports CRUD in both tables.
There were three tables in the query: CIEAV_BUILDING, CIEAV_UNIT, and T -- the main CRUD table. When you say that I should create two EOs, do you mean that they are to be for CIEAV_BUILDING and CIEAV_UNIT? Or, CIEAV and T? Assuming CIEAV and T, that sounds like it would allow me to show my building or unit on the record but not both.
By the way, everything is a reference except for the main CRUD table.
Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for your help (and patience).

  • Newbie question: saving jpeg files in indesign document

    hi there,
i'm rather new to indesign and i can't get this thing to work:
whenever i place a jpeg image (or for that matter, any other image format) into an indesign document and later move
the jpeg file to a different location on my harddrive and then reopen the indesign file, the image is all pixeled. it seems like the image
isn't saved inside the .indesign file, but is more of a referal to the file on my hard disk.
is it possible to embed external files (like jpeg) into the actual indesign document and save them within this document?
i'd be gracious for any help.

Grant's answers are correct. You SHOULD use linked images and you should update them on the Links panel.
There are specialized reasons it might be necessary to embed an image, but in general it's not a good idea: (1) It makes the files unnecessarily large, (2) if you make changes in the image, it can be updated in the InDesign file.

  • Newbie Question: (recent PC convert to iMAC)

I read Swith101 Help info but still confused what PC files I need to xfer onto iMac and where should I park them? I copied over the obvious stuff (photos and itune files). But what about the rest of my PC files? Word, kids PC games, IE bookmarks/favorites, etc.
    Guidance please!

Where you put everything depends on what it is. For example, Word files can be organized however you want, usually in your user in the Documents folder and then organized in more folders however you want. IE bookmarks can be imported into Safari (File>Import bookmarks). The PC games will only work with either Boot Camp, Parallels or VMware Fusion. You will also need a Windows or Vista license for these. You'll be able to run all your MS software with these (presuming your iMac is Intel based). You should check with the software vendors of your Windows programs to see if they have Mac versions. You can alos check www.versiontracker.com to see if there are conversion utilities for your files.

  • Newbie question: Can't get equal object widths

I have two rectangle paths in my document. I don't remember exactly how I created them but as far as I can tell, they are very alike, same fill, no stroke. They are two vertical sides of a rectangular border around the perimiter of my doc.
I would like to change the widths to be identical. Width/height proportion constraints are off. I enter the width of one object in the width field of the other, and the width changes but to some unpredictable number. I can put in a new number again and the width changes to something new but not what I want. I have tried to use different units, same result. I have no problem changing the heights of the corresponding horizontal paths to be the numbers I want.
There is one visible difference between the paths: When the troubling path is selected, the blue outline around it is wider than on the other paths.
I ended up throwing away the trouble path and copying the good one as a work-around. But I'd like to know what's going on, I assume I'm missing something basic.
    Hope somebody can help.

With the rectangle tool (hotkey: M)
Hold [Alt] and click where you want your rectangle to be centered. A window will appear with the height and width options.
If it's all symmetrical, I would then use the Reflect tool, or Rotate tool to make a copy, where I wanted. With either tool, hold [Alt] and click the point you wish to rotate around. Check the preview box to make sure you have the right outcome, and then select the Copy option to finalize.
If you are selecting one rectangle at a time and entering the new width into the Transform Panel, I am unsure what is happening.
(Note: Instead of increasing the width, in the transform panel, by replacing 128 px with 256 px ▬ you have the option to add to the original number,
so it would look like this: 128+128 px [it also works for decreasing, with subtraction])
To select and scale two objects, in place, at the same time:
    Object→ Transform→ Transform each

  • InDesign or Acrobat (newbie question)

    Hi,
I tried posting this in the LiveCycle Designer forum, but I think it's a bit too much of a newbie question:
Once in a blue moon when I'm at work, someone will ask me if I can add text fields to a PDF form so that they can easily type onto it and print it out. I've always done that directly in Acrobat (on the few occasions that it's been requested from me). But I was curious about Adobe LiveCycle since it came with CS3, so I played around with it a couple of days ago. I added the text fields in LiveCycle this time, and it seems to have worked fine. Which is the better program for this kind of task? I'm not 100% clear on the *main* purposes of either program or how they compare. If anyone wanted to give me a clue about it, I'd appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Phyllis

    > I thought perhaps you could add that capability
You can (I said I was oversimplifying). However there are contractual
limits - to oversimplify (!) 500 users per form.
    >Which would be preferable -- receiving form data from LiveCycle or Acrobat?
It depends what you want to do.
    >
    >I wish I knew what the difference was between these two programs. Is it purely a matter of emphasis on one task or another?
They come to the same problem in different ways. For a simple task
they may seem pretty much the same. Some differences:
    * A form made in Acrobat is a PDF with form fields stuck on top; it
remains a normal PDF in every other way. Forms are almost always made
by preparing an existing PDF, then adding form fields.
    * A form made in Designer is barely a PDF. It's a wrapper round an XML
file. You can no longer edit it in Acrobat, ever, even for the most
simple things. PDF files are imported and converted (sometimes with
loss of quality or features), or forms are made from scratch.
    * Acrobat form fields are fixed size.
    * Designer form layout can be dynamic.

  • Can you import jpegs into Livetype as fonts?

I have a logo, in which I have broken up all the letters into separate jpegs, so I can animate them in. Unfortunately Motion has limited animation for objects that are not fonts, and as far as I can tell, livetype will not animate anything but fonts. Can someone help me figure out how to...I guess create a font in which these different jpegs would make up the letters of the font, and import that into livetype? Thank you!

You pose and interesting question. Live Type works best when you use the exisiting fonts provided in the program
Yes you can import jpegs into Live Type and you can use the pre-fabricated effects to animate them if you please, you can even modify many of the effects.
If you have a just a few elements of a logo you may be able to create what you want relatively fast. You can do this in Motion as well, where you have more control, although IMO the learning curve is steeper in Motion. For that matter you could keyframe and animate in Final Cut Pro as well.
If you choose to try this in Live Type then go to File>Place and select each of you jpegs indivudually.
Good luck and post back if youhave more questions

  • How can I convert table object into table record format?

I need to write a store procedure to convert table object into table record. The stored procedure will have a table object IN and then pass the data into another stored procedure with a table record IN. Data passed in may contain more than one record in the table object. Is there any example I can take a look? Thanks.

I'm afraid it's a bit labourious but here's an example.

  • Total Newbie Question ... Sorry :-(

I know it's a windows thing, and I am now converted to Mac but I gotta know this because it's doing my head in. It's a complete stupid green gilled newbie question.
When installing new programs on a Mac can you create shortcuts to the programs on the Dock? I did what I THOUGHT it would be, i.e I made an Alias and stuck it in the dock, but on rebooting my Mac later on, in place of the shortcuts where 3 question marks which when clicked on did absolutely nothing???
    Help?

You aren't installing something from a dmg file are you? The dmg is a disk image – kind of a virtual CD. So when you double click the dmg and then get the little disk/hardrive/custom icon on your desktop that is the same as if you had mounted a CD. You then need to drag the application off of that "CD" into your application folder. Then it is truly installed.
You can then "eject" the icon your your desktop. This is what happens when you shutdown and without remounting the image your dock shortcut can't find the original.
    Just a thought.

  • Newbie Question about FM 8 and Acrobat Pro 9

    Hello:
I have some dcouments that I've written in FM v8.0p277. I print them to PDF so that I can have a copy to include on a CD and I also print some hard copies.
My newbie question is whether there is a way to create a  PDF for hard copy where I mainitain the colors in photos and figures but that the text that is hyperlinked doesn't appear as blue. I want to keep the links live within the soft copy. Is there something I can change within Frame or with Acrobat?
    TIA,
    Kimberly

    Kimberly,
How comes the text is blue in the first place? I guess the cross-reference formats use some character format which makes them blue? There are many options:
Temporarily change the color definition for the color used in the cross-reference format to black.
Temporarily change the character format to not use that color.
Temporarily change the cross-reference definition to not used that character format.
Whichever method you choose, I would create a separate document with the changed format setting and import those format into your book, create the PDF and then import the same format from the official template.

  • Unable to Edit Imported Jpeg files.

I'm currently using iPhoto 9.6 and OS 10.10.   I have created jpg stills from .mov projects using QT Pro and imported them successfully into a previous version of iPhoto where I was able to crop them and make rudimentary color and exposure adjustments.  With the new iPhoto 9.6 I cannot.  I get an error message "Image Cannot Be Edited.  The original format is not supported."
So I am assuming the only way to edit these imported jpegs is to open them in Lightroom or Photoshop make my adjustments and then attempt to re-import them into iPhoto or maybe just stop using iPhoto all together for this kind of file?

Yes "master" copies of files - those located in the iPhoto >>package contents >> Masters folder organized by import date - once they have been edited from within iPhoto (exposure corrections, cropping, straightening, etc) become the master copies.
Bewilderingly vague. They are the masters. They are never edited. The photos are edited and the results recorded in the SQL database. The never "become the Master copies". They are the Masters and never become anything.
To prove this I have selected a master file from with this directory and created a copy of it on the desktop where I gave it a new name, then re-imported it to iPhoto and re-opened it there.  It is a virtual clone of the original edited file - edited from within iPhoto save for its name - an "edited master".
If you made a copy of a Master then it's not a virtual clone it's an actual clone. "It is a virtual clone of the original edited file" Huh? What's an "original edited file"? It's a Master or something else? Which is it? There is no concept in iPhoto of 'edited Master'. There are Masters. That's the file as imported from your camera. It is never edited. End of story.
Subsequently from within iPhoto I have chosen the original photo - the one that had been modified to begin with - and reverted this file to its original version.  So then I had two masters of the same shot - one edited and one in its originally imported state.  Why did I do this (and originate this post)?
No you didn't. You had two masters to begin with and thereafter you had two masters at the end. When you reverted to original all you did was delete the edit decisions for the database and destroy a preview. In no case was the Master touched.
The terminology is important because it explains how the app works. You're conflating photos (which are edited in iPhoto) with files (which are never edited in iPhoto), all photo edits are virtual until baked in on export. That's why the concept and the term Master is important. Edited Master means nothing, Master of an Edited Photo does, but that's a different thing.
Because I could not re-edit or export these affected photos unless I first re-imported them to iPhoto by either locating the original files from storage media or making copies of them from iPhoto's package contents>>masters folder as above and importing them back into the iPhoto library.  Once I did this - there were a lot of these affected files - I could edit and export to my heart's content.  Remember, these files were modified from within earlier versions iPhoto itself.  Yes, some files had been converted to jpegs from original PICT exports out QT Pro using Photoshop Elements.
Because your database was corrupted. It has nothing to do with Masters/Versions or anything else. It was broken.
How do I explain this apparent corruption of the iPhoto library database?  Disclaimers to the contrary, I put the onus on having to convert the db every time there is an app iteration which is sometimes coupled with an OS upgrade (like with Yosemite).  I suspect that the file metadata is susceptible to corruption during these upgrades.  It is the only variable in an otherwise static and stable environment that could possibly result in library corruption short of hardware failure.
That's one possibility. Here are some more: anytime the app is interrupted writing to the database - by a crash, hang or even a power surge, bad blocks on a disk - there are many possibilities..
And again, there is no need to convert the db "every time there is an app iteration". There are updates when it is not necessary. And, as I keep on saying, OS upgrades make no difference. It's app upgrades only.

  • Import/ export of an object or item in portal 10g

    Good Morning!
    </p>
can anyone tell what is the format of import / export of an object or item in portal 10g?
<br>this is in the context of updating or rolling into production server an item whose earlier version might be sitting in the production server before. and it is based on the premise that the environment/ system is composed of more than one servers and production is only one of them.
<br> apologies ... if i am not even phrasing the question right. by format, what i mean to know is does it first delete the older component and then generate the new one or it renegades and keeps the older version and bring on the newer version, or what.
    </p><p>
    any hints will be appreciated.

  • Imported JPEG causes ptroblems when publishing

Still have problems with publishing a FLA with an imported
    JPEG as a
    background.
It is published OK several times and then on athe next
    attempt to publish it
slows down and throws a message that the computer run out of
    virtual memory
and will take it from some other processes. This takes a
    couple of minutes
nd then the resulting SWF is about 10 times the size it was
    before and shows
    no backgrownd.
The JPEG is still in the FLA, but it is empty.
I delete is completely, import again - same story - compiles
    well only
    several first times.
Tries it with other JPEGs - same result.
Without JPEG thisfla compiles without problems
The JPEG in question is a photo taken by low resolution
    digital camera, 1276
    by 958 pixel and 330 K

The size of main fla file in which I am importing the image
    is 2.5Mb
Version of Flash is 8, AS version 2
I cannnot see file size abnormality here.
The most puzzling is that after I remove and re-import the
    image it compiles
well several times? before the problem repeats. It looks like
    something is
    accumulationg over repeated publishing.
Or my code might have some hidden side effect which does
    something with the
    image
