Newbie question: placing Illustrator .ai or .eps file in InDesign

I have an Illustrator file consisting of text which has been converted to outlines.  When I place either the .eps or .ai version of the file in a new InDesign document, the text is composed of blocky pixels which make it not only unaesthetic but also unreadable. My goal is to place it so that it looks like it does in Illustrator and is resizeable as a vector.  This is my first shot at using InDesign so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, I just can't figure out what.  I would appreciate any help.  Thanks!

You likely are just looking at the low res proxy image. It is to keep the layout peppy.
View > Display Performance
or right click any image and go to Display Performance to adjust it individually. Can be set globally too in preference.
Hope that works for.

  • Question about Illustrator CS5 making eps files in Mac OS 10.9.5

Hello, I am using Illustrator CS5 on a Mac. I just updates to Mac OS 10.9.5
Now when I save an simple Illustrator vector file as an eps, and place it in another program (such as Quark), I get code instead of the preview image. I tried older vector eps files, and they still work. i tried older Quark files, and they still work. I ruled out font problems. I tried importing new Illustrator ai file, same result. Any thoughts?

Ask in the AI forum and include proper details about your export settings and your artwork. EPS parsing errors usually mean you chose an unsuitable combination of settings and/or the embedded previews are botched.

  • Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode

Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode document ?
I am using windows XP with Adobe Creative suite 2.
In both Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2 have the same color settings.
If I take a RGB file that was created in Photoshop CS2 and place this file in a CMYK color mode document in Illustrator CS2, does this cause a problem for the output of the document ?
If you look at the ''Document Info'' window you can now see that the RGB file is now a CMYK file. Is this a good working habit ?
    Thanks in advance. :)

    >Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode document ?
Please explain why you would do such a thing? (Why RGB, and why EPS.)
    >If I take a RGB file that was created in Photoshop CS2 and place this file in a CMYK color mode document in Illustrator CS2, does this cause a problem for the output of the document ?
    Yes.
You are working in CMYK mode presumably because your Illustrator document is destined for output on a PostScript device -- e.g., a printing press. That means that your RGB image will undergo a space conversion somewhere in the process, and the questions are when and how?
The issue is compounded by the fact that Illustrator ignores color profiles embedded in EPS files by Photoshop. (Just another reason not to use EPS.)
By performing the conversion yourself in Photoshop, you take control of the process and ensure predictable color.

  • Opening .eps file in InDesign CC

How do I open a .eps file in InDesign CC.  When I try there is an error message saying that the file cannot be opened "Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing , or the file may be open in another application".

You do not open EPS files in Indesign, you place them. They can be opened in Illustrator.

  • Questions regarding: 1) Photoshop and Illustrator softwares 2) .eps file formats.

I'm using a DELL PC running Win7. I have Adobe Photoshop CS (i.e. the first CS version from 2003).
I do not yet have Adobe Illustrator.
I'm creating images for a science publication. It includes graphs, chemical structures, color photos of lab
equipment. I use ChemBioDraw (Cambridgesoft, http://scistore.cambridgesoft.com) to draw chemical
structures and schematics. I've been using MS Powerpoint to draw graphs, make composites of photos, label
    panels, and add annotation.
    1) The publishing company wants line drawings to be in .eps format. I can copy and paste ChemBioDraw
and Powerpoint figures into Photoshop and then save them in .eps format. They look identical to me when in
.eps format. Will this be suitable for publication?
    2) The ChemBioDraw figure file size increases more than tenfold when converted to .eps format. Is this
    expected?
    3) I have used Photoshop a lot in the past but not for my recent work. My coauthor uses Adobe Illustrator on
a PowerMac G5-9.1. He creates .eps files for line drawings. Are the drawing tools in Illustrator much
better than those in Photoshop? If I get Illustrator will I be able to manipulate photo images (create
composites, add annotation etc.) as I have with Photoshop in the past?
    4) My coauthor has sent me some .eps line drawings. When I open them with Photoshop there is a gray and
white checkerboard pattern in the background. I believe this is because the background layer has been
eliminated (the image is in layer 1). Can such a file be opened in a way that the background is solid white?
    5) Is there a Windows-compatible software for viewing .eps files that is simpler than Photoshop or Illustrator  (i.e. no editing
    function)?
    Thanks,
    Thomas C.

    1) No. Photoshop does not create true vector files. Anyone asking for an EPS more than likely wants a true vector EPS file.
    2) No way of telling without seeing the results. But it could be perfectly normal. Increased file size in an EPS does not automatically mean there is a problem.
    3) Illustrator is a drawing tool. The tools in Illustrator are designed for object-oriented vector drawing. In many respects they are better than Photoshop's tools for those type of projects. And No, you can not edit photographs easily with Illustrator. While you can include photos or raster items within an Illustrator file, Illustrator is not inherently designed to edit iamges at a pixel level.
    4) Just add a new layer and fill it with white (or whatever color). Vector EPS files have no background.
    5) If you have Photoshop or Illustrator you have Bridge. You can view files in Bridge. I wouldn't know of any other Windows software. It may exist, I simply wouldn't know.

  • Did Illustrator change how EPS files are dealt with between CS2 and CS3?

Here's an odd question for you. I have an EPS file that opens fine when I use Illustrator CS2. However, when I try to open the same file in Illustrator CS3, 4, and 5, the colors come in wrong. I don't mean color slightly off wrong, The colors are changed to something completely unrelated and scrambled. To make things more confusing, everytime the view changes, the color and  patterns change as well. This makes me think that it is something with  how Illustrator is interpreting the EPS file. If I try to open the file  in Photoshop or Distiller, the file comes out looking normal. Any  suggestions? Thanks for your input!

I do Graphics/Production work for an archaeological firm. Before I started working here, they decided that of the different export options from our GIS department, EPS was the format that gave us the least problems and the highest quality. This was decided when we were using Illustrator 10. Now we're making the shift from CS2 and 3 to CS5 (getting our department on the same version), we are running into this problem with the EPS files and I am trying to find a solution to make all of our lives easier. One of the other options that we are kicking around is ditching the EPS file format all together and shifting to using a high quality PDF instead. Could this cause any loss of quality?

  • Illustrator error opening eps file exported from sketchup pro 8

When I attempt to use Illustrator CS6 to open an .eps file exported from Google Sketchup Pro 8 I get the following error message "the file is an unknown format and cannot be opened".    If I try to place/link the file I get this message "can't place the illustration. Could not set a position inside the file."  Any thoughts on why I'm having this issue?  Is there an eps version compatibility issue I should be aware of?

  • Exporting EPS files in InDesign CS3 takes FOREVER!!!

When exporting a file in InDesign it takes up to 10 minutes per page to export a file in EPS form. I am working on a server, but co-workers are doing the same thing and they do not have the same problem. I have noticed that it seems like the files with links in them take the longest. Meaning... if I have just a text file it will export very quickly like it should, but if it has a linked file it will take anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes to export. Does anyone know what's going on?

Can you make the problem go away by working off the network? Just because you're the only one having problems doesn't absolutely mean the network isn't the cause of the problems. And because these kinds of problems come up all the time with people who work from a server, the network is the obvious place to look first.

  • EPS files in InDesign CS5/CC

Why EPS files slow down InDesign CS5 and even  InDesign CC? How to optimize it? Thx

Perhaps its to do with your preferences for displaying?
Go to Edit>Preferences and the Display Performance
Set "Vectors" to the middle in the sliders.
In your document go to View>Display Performance and pick the Typical setting
And also tick the "Clear Object Display Settings"
You should also try and use .ai instead of EPS

  • *Newbie Question* Acrobat 8.1 SDK: Converting Files and Multithreading

I'm new to the SDK concept so please bare with me:
1.) Can .DWG files be converted directly to PDFs?
2.) **Must a version of Adobe Acrobat be installed on a computer for an application to function if it is using the SDKs class libraries?
3.) If the application is installed on one computer, how many users are allowed to access it simultaneously.
    Thanks for the answers!

    >1.) Can .DWG files be converted directly to PDFs?
Acrobat can use AutoCAD to do this, through the user interface. A
    plug-in can also invoke this.
    >2.) **Must a version of Adobe Acrobat be installed on a computer for an application to function if it is using the SDKs class libraries?
Absolutely. Just as the Windows SDK is for computers with Windows on
it, so the Acrobat SDK is for computers with Acrobat on it. The SDK
itself does not add any interfaces, they all exist in Acrobat.
    >3.) If the application is installed on one computer, how many users are allowed to access it simultaneously.
Only the logged in user. Acrobat is not for network or server use.

  • Newb question:  How do I access the files on my usb disk?

I'm new to Mac, and have my airport extreme set up with my usb disk conntected, and set for file sharing. But how to I access the files that I already had backed up to my disk? Like pictures and videos and stuff that I want to use on my new Mac. I know it has to be something simple I'm just not doing, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

    StacyW wrote:

in finder, click on the icon of the airdisk under the shared header, wait for the connection to be established (you may need to enter your admin password), then click on the folder representing the external drive connected to your extreme.
that should cause the drive to mount on your desktop after which you can access the files on the drive.

To my experience InDesign and Acrobat are more reliable in
color management so it is probably FreeHand's color preferencens
that need adjusting. (Preferences > Color)
Only setting that work reliably is KDS (Kodak Digital
Science) If you select correct color profiles you'll be able to get
    fairly close match.
CMYK values are 'just' numbers and it is about color
management how these values are represented on screen. Color values
should not change on export but to make sure check if they are the
    same in all programs.
If you use RGB colors they may be converted into CMYK and the
look different for sure. RGB colors should not be used in print
    production.

  • Can you remove XMP data from .eps files in Illustrator-CS5.5?

    Background:
I'm using font software called Typetool 3 and Illustrator CS5.5.
I am using these on Windows 7, 64 bit.
This is entry level font software released by Fontlab.
This software accepts artwork through the .eps file format in both theory and practice.
However: it refuses illustrator CS5.5 .eps files.
When I looked at this I came up with two highly interesting things: First- CS5.5 illustrator files are roughly 13 times the size of CS5 files, of this type (a simple font glyph-comparing a 29-30 kbfile to a 420-450 kb file in cs5 and cs5.5 respectively).
Thing two came from looking at what that data was (by opening it in a text editor). It appears that some of the data XMP data, illustrators data for tracking things like who created the file, copyright, and other. In document info many of these fields were blank. I'm sure this isn't the only issue because my exported xmp data is 64 kb large, but it does account for a chunk of the file.
The main question being: Can this xmp data; which for my purposes is redundant, because I have to put copyright and other data in the font, be removed or not included at the point of document creation?
The technical question being:Can the file be saved in a manner which will allow it to be exported from adobe CS5.5 and imported into Typetool 3?
    Things I've tried:
In saving .eps file: removing document headers, previews, color data, saving as different versions of the language. Basically saving it without all settings.
In saving .ai file: saving without any settings checked (without compression, pdf editting, ect.) and saving it to a different level of illustrator.
I do not know enough about postscript programming to navigate the file or remove the offending data. Nor do I have time to do this over multiple glyphs.
As a matter of opinion I do not like that my software is including potentially identifying information (which is one of the intents of XMP data, to provide identification) without notifying the creator, let alone allowing me to keep it from doing that. I would not mind or bother-except for the fact its messed up an established workflow. If someone editted this data without my knowledge, say with a virus or heaven forbid manually, it would be also be bothersome. Having a check that identifies that I am sending this data out would give me something to know if this situation was in fact happening. Additionally for a situation like mine-communication between programs in a closed environment where no other users are involved, its unnecessary and wasteful... like putting gold rims on what is intended to be an oxcart.
I'm planning on going to Fontlab for later this week, as it is as much thier issue as it is Adobe's. From what I know XMP is both a useful and popular technology- having a workaround for this situation seems like it would be a good idea. If necessary I can attach some working files for comparision.

I would save it as EPS (version Illustrator 3). This should be compatible to almost any  software that takes EPS.

  • CS3 EPS files placed in Quark don't print????

    Hello -
Been fighting some issues on CS3 over the last few months. It seems that I have a problem with placing EPS files from CS3 into Quark and successfully getting a printout. My Specs:
    Mac 10.5.6, G4, 1GB RAM, Illustrator CS3 (13.0.2), Quark 7.5, HP Color Laserjet 4500.
Now, if I go to print a document with "Tiled" output from Quark, I can only have 1 CS3 EPS placed in the file, anything over 1 results in a Tile for the first page, but no second "Tile" when I should get two.
If I step and repeat a picture box with the same EPS 2 or more times, and it fits on one page, I get no output (the job spins up on the printer then quietly dies).
Now before you jump on Quark, I will say that AI CS2 files do NOT exhibit this behavior, it ONLY seems to apply to AI CS3 files.
If I use PDF over EPS, there is no problem. But I have years of legacy document that I do NOT want to have to create PDF's of my EPS files.
Anyone got some insight on this? Thanks!

    >But I have years of legacy document
If these art not CS 3 files then you are ok correct?
The only problem you say is with CS3 is that correct?
Save them back to CS2 as a copy, or upgrade to cS 4 perhaps but I do not know if that would fix the problem. The other thing I can think of that might be an issue is that at one time Quark needed to have Illustrator CS 3 EPS file saved with a tiff preview. Perhaps the type of preview is the cause of this problem.
Try changing the preview in the EPS Options.
Those are my thoughts on this I hope something in it will be helpful.

  • Question about EPS file

Hey guys, here's my perdicament and I need your guys' input/feedback on this.
I had a midterm exam today in my advanced prepress class and the question was as follows:
    - An EPS file is considered a:
    A) Raster file
    B) Vector file
    C) Metafile
I chose B (vector file) and here is the reason why: I know that an EPS file can contain vector, raster, and type data, meaning it would be a metafile but what if you were to create an EPS file with just a square box drawn and saved it? Wouldn't that make it a vector file (no raster or type data)?
    What do you guys think?
    Thanks for the input!

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
So couldn't I hold a valid argument if I was to tell my instructor that an EPS could be considered all 3: a raster file, vector file, or metafile?
No, because simply stating that a file is in EPS format tells you absolutely nothing about whether its CONTENT is raster, vector, or text. Stop kicking against the thorns. It is completely inappropriate to refer to an EPS file as a "vector file." That is one of the most common misconceptions and misuses of terminology in graphic design and it has causes untold confusion and bad practices in the trade.  That is, no doubt, the very point of the test question.
If I give you a box, would you call it an artificial Christmas tree just because it may contain one?
    Even the question was well-stated:
    - A cardboard box is considered a:
    A) Artificial Christmas tree
    B) Clutch basket for a Suzuki DL1000
    C) Container
