Newbie Question: Updating to latest Java JRE

Hi forum,
there is j2re1.4.1_03 installed under program files\java .
I heard that the new version 1.5 is out. How do I update. Do I have to delete the folder j2re1.4.1_03 first ?

You can have multiple JDK and/or JRE installed on one computer.
If you want to remove 1.4.x, don't delete the folder, uninstall from the control panel.

Java 6 you can't as Apple maintains it, and Java 7 you could if you uninstall it and Oracle provides the earlier version which they likely won't his last update fixed 37 remote exploits.
Java broken some software here and there, all you'll have to do is wait for a update from the other parties.

  • Annoyance - latest Java JRE update too automated

I am quite annoyed that someone somewhere made a choice that took away an install option I've relied upon and has suddenly made life much more difficult. In the past, whenever I chose to or wanted to update my runtime environment, I was able to manually invoke the update (I always turn the auto-update service off!!!). Then, during the update install, there USED to exist a checkbox providing an option to install the update to a location OF MY CHOICE as opposed to the much-abused "Program Files" location. Why was this option removed from the latest version of the update? I now am forced to walk through all my registry entries and hope I find all references to this crap and change them to the location I EXPECT and INSIST on the update existing. On a number of production systems, I have chosen to uninstall or not even allow the update because I don't know what else you broke and am not willing to spend an inordinate time going through an elaborate test cycle wasting unfunded, overtaxed and much-beleagured resources.
I beseech you as a long-time Java developer, a Sun shareholder, and avid advocate of the mighty Sun - please bring me back my choice of install location for the JRE update!

In most forums that is not the case.
It has been my experience that most JRE updates are not simple in-place patches. Rather, the update is a complete self-contained install of the JRE files. I have ALWAYS used the checkmark option and place each update in a folder specific to that update. This way, I've been able to isolate JRE version compatibility in my production systems and it has allowed my staff to manage our runtime environments. This last update did not provide me with the option as all the other updates since 1.4 have.
Certainly sounds reasonable. Someone at Sun thinks it is a patch though. The bug that was opened above has been closed by specifically noting that it is a patch.
So in terms of your goal you would probably need to write a wrapper that going forward allows them to differentiate an update that allows for an alternative location and one that does not.

  • Newbie Question: Updating to v1.01

I am expecting my iPhone within a couple of days...having bought one from a friend in another state.
Forgive my ignorance...but how do I do the update to 1.01 correctly?
    Thanks!

Make sure you are running the latest iTunes version and I'm not sure but fairly positive you will probably be required to activate the iPhone with AT&T Wireless first and afterwards there is a Check for Update button under the Summary tab for your iPhone with iTunes. The rest is automatic.

mendel-  I have downloaded all Java updates.  However several times I was told by an expert in this forum to check something and open Java pref and do something else.  I did download it but my question was do I need to check or uncheck or do anything with Java Pref. I think the table is called.  Just checking so that not only the downloaded was installed but anything else that nees to be done was done.  this is why I ended up at this Security article which was way ovr my head.

  • Distribution of Java JRE on Windows Vista Ultimate x64

The automatic update of the Java JRE on my Windows Vista Ultimate x64 system often comes up saying a new update is available but then as soon as I go ahead to install it, the update tells me that the particular version of the JRE is already installed.
How can this automatic update bug for new JRE installations be fixed.

Uninstall the software cleanly via the "Add or Remove programs" panel, then run another install. The breakdown is in the licensing system, not the application itself. Do not run the clean scripts until you have attempted this. If it still fails, then indeed a call to Adobe tech might do wonders...

  • How does Java JRE impact Microsoft JVM

Supposing I download the latest Java JRE onto a PC, will it impact the programs that are currently using the Microsoft JVM ?

Check regedit with the oldvalueThanks -- I tried that. The old value is not in the registry, and all of the registry settings for java.home point to the correct directory. The java.home value that ends up inside the plugin must be determined some other way (at least in 1.4.2).
If anyone out there knows where it comes from, please let me know!
    Thanks.

  • Multiple version of JRE in company..How to manage? (newbie question)

    Greetings..this is a newbie question
We have 48 versions of JRE running in on XP IE6 in our company.

How can anyone manage this many versions?
Can we consolidate down to a few versions?
I saw some posts on changing the JRE dynamically or perhaps using a wrapper with a product from "sourceforge".
    Are these viable?

  • Is it ok to download the latest java update:

Is it ok to download the latest java update? I thought I had heard of a problem with them?

The Java 6U35 (1.6.0_35) that you currently is rather old, so you should either update to the latest Java 6U41 or Java 7U15 version to be protected against security vulnerabilities.
You can find the latest Java version on the Oracle website.

  • Question about the new JAVA Update J2SE 5.0 Release 3

Here is some info about this update:
Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 3 allows applications and applets developed for the J2SE 5.0 platform to run on Mac OS X v 10.4.2 and later.
This update does NOT CHANGE the DEFAULT VERSION of Java on your Mac from Java 1.4.2 to J2SE 5.0, though Java applications that require J2SE 5.0 may specifically request it. You can change the preferred Java version for applications and applets by using the new Java Preferences utility. This utility is installed by the J2SE 5.0 update at /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/.

    HERE IS MY QUESTION---
This update makes me nervous cause I don't know much about Java. IF I change my default version to this new 5.0 will it mean that some of the older Java stuff on the web won't work? Should I just download this and ignore it? What should I do about this update?
    Thanks for the help!
    Renée

I too seem to be suffering issues with loading web pages after the 10.4.3/Java 5.0 update. I have reinstalled both updates, changed the java settings, emptied all the caches, and tried various combinations thereof, and I still have problems with web pages loaded. most of the problems appear to be related to rendering frames and images - In fact a couple of web sites I navigate to (upon looking at the source for the page" state "It appears your browser does not support frames." I think this is something broken in the latest release. Unfortunately, I cannot reinstall the latest copy of Safari, because the installer states "This version of Safari cannot be installed. It requires version 10.4.2." I guess I am in a pickle until Apple comes out with another update. BTW I have some pages that Safari will not render but IE running on the same box will. I also noticed that the problem propagated to other applications that use Java....For instance the Dashboard widget from google (Google Maps) no longer renders the tiled (framed?) map pieces...instead you get the ubiquitous "?" icon.

  • Newbie needs general help w/Java Updating

    Hi,
I don't use Java (as far as I know) too often, but right now I've got Java 5_6 update on my computer. I've been told that's unstable and I should update to Java 6. I was also told I should remove 5_6 Update with add/remove programs before doing so. I was also told I should remove the three Java "objects" in the Downloaded Program Files Folder before doing so (which is an IE thing, right?). But I was also told to go and download Java 6 directly from the Sun site and install, but I'm not sure if that's necessary or the way I want to do it, because I have the option to check for updates in the Java Control Panel that comes up when I double click the Java icon in my Control Panel folder.
    Questions:
    1. The three java objects in the downloaded objects folder are in a folder that's part of IE, is that right? I don't use IE (except for Windows Updates), I use Firefox. So where are the objects kept for Firefox?
    2. Do I really need to also remove these objects in addition to add/removing 5_6 Update? If so, for both IE and Firefox?
    3. When I go to my Control Panel, there is an icon for JAVA. When I double-click this icon, a JAVA CONTROL PANEL opens up. If I remove 5_6 Update and those objects, will that also remove this control panel? The control panel was part of my system when I got my laptop.
    4. If the Java Control Panel is retained, then why can't I just go to the second tab which is for Updates, choose "Update Now" and get the Java 6 update that way? (And this would be AFTER I remove 5_6 -- and any objects, IF that's necessary.)
It's my hope that I can just update to Java 6 (after removing the 5_6 update and objects, if necessary) by using the update feature in the Java Control Panel instead of downloading Java 6 from the Sun site. If this is not a good idea, I would like to understand why.
Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

Thanks for the post. So J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
Update 6 (which is apparently what I have now) is
    stable
It's reasonably stable. There are bugs in it, of course. There are always bugs in software. Unless you're having problems with them, however, you don't automatically need to update.
The list of changes between that release of Java 5 and the latest (1.5.11 at the time of writing) is given here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/ReleaseNotes.html
, and it's false that it has security
holes that can be exploitedThat's a completely different question. I can't promise you that there are no security flaws that have been fixed since that particular update. However, unless you're running a server or downloading applets or otherwise running in a security constrained environment there's not much point in worrying about it. Again, if there is a specific reason for you to worry check the bugs and enhancement lists here to see if your concerns are addressed:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/index.html
Either way you don't update just because someone says you should unless you have reason to believe they know what they're talking about. I suggest you ask your original source to explain why they think you should upgrade and to provide you with the evidence to back up their assertions.

  • Updates for Java 2 Runtime Enviroment V1.4.2_08 and Java JRE 1.3.1_01

    Hello everyone,
Thanks again for your help, I have a different question, because in my windows 2003 I have 2 versions, (I suppose)
Java 2 Runtime Enviroment V1.4.2_08 and
Java JRE 1.3.1_01 (Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3._01)
Anyeone here, that might help me to find out the difference, or JRE 1.3.1_01 is just an old version of V1.4.2_08. Thanks a lot!

To answer " Anyeone here, that might help me to find out the difference, or JRE 1.3.1_01 is just an old version of V1.4.2_08. Thanks a lot!"
Yes. 1.3.1_01 is very old, and 1.4.2_08 contains all the fixes/features/changes that are in 1.3.1_01. There is considerable change between the two.
You are going to have to do some work to figure out the differences if that is your intention.
Each family release moves the code base forward, containing all the features/fixes from the previous family.
1.4.2 introduced new features, and had many, many fixes. Each 1.4.2 update has release notes that list the changes that you can find and read.
    Consider moving to 1.7
    Have fun!

  • Macbook Pro HD died/not recognized after latest Java & airport update..

    Hi,
After the latest Java & airport updates, my mbp won't startup.
The only thing i see after the chime is the questionmark folder.
Holding the option button during restart to choose the bootdisk doesn't show the harddisk.
I've resetted pram & smc and that also doesn't fix it.
The mbp was connected to the charger and the battery almost full.
Hope somebody can help me, have been searching but didn't found no answers.

Antonio, I'm going to try the instal disk tomorrow(it's almost 02:00 over here, and i'm at my girls house). If the harddisk is recognized, i will try the hardware check and see what's wrong.
Firewire mode is still working, so maybe with a little luck i can access it from my PowerMac. Did this before on my old Powerbook 12inch, when it gave up working properly.
Can you believe this.. Because i needed all the space of my external hd, i copied all my music to my mbp's hd tonight.. didn't expect this to happen.
Before i went to my girls house i was thinking about putting it all back, but couldn't wait..
I don't think apple is going to replace my hd on warranty, it's more than 2 years old.
My mbp has served well and i'm waiting for the arrendale 15 mbp's, when they arrive i'll order one and will swap the harddisk for a ssd. Then i can put the hd in my santa rosa mbp.
But if you think i can try asking apple for a replacement harddisk, i will try..
