Newbie Question - what do i need ?

Hi ... I am an animator and I want to write a soundtrack for my demo reel. I do have some musical background and would like to restart my interest in composing music. Should I go for logic express or just use garage band ? If i stick with garage band I need to get that symphony jam pack. Is there anything similar for logic. I am a complete newb to all of this. I guess i don;t really know what I need. I was thinking a USB midi keyboard, logic express and some kind of sample add-on.
Thanks everyone !

oh yeah ... i was also wondering if express has all the quantization tools that pro has. thanks =).

  • Newbie question: What accesories do I need ...

    Hi there,
I'm in a phase of buying the iPod Color (60GB) and want to use it as follows:
    - Connect it to my PC to synchronize (via iTunes/Photoshop Elements 3.0) with various kinds of sources (music, photos, podcasts, music store) & recharge (preferably using a dock)
    - Connect it to my Audio/TV equipment for slideshows and/or listening & charging
    - Connect it to my car audio
    - At times (vacation) be able to use (part of the) disk as a backup device for my digital camera (Canon G5) whilst on the road.
    My questions:
    - Am I asking too much?
    - If not what exactly do I need to buy next to the iPod color bundle itself to realize the functionality listed above without having to carry around with all sorts of cables and docks between PC/Car/TV-Audio? (I want a comfortable solution in which the iPod is the only "mobile" part)
I know this sounds pretty trivial but I find it pretty confusing to compose the correct bundle on the iStore (Netherlands) which led me to put forward this question in this forum.
    Hoping for some good advise.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for your reply.
I definitely need a case based on the feedback I got. Seems the iPods case is easy to be scratched. (BTW: Any recommendations?)
Furthermore I have the following list:
    - Seems I need 2 docks, one for the PC and one for the TV/Audio.
    - Next to this I need an additional AV-cable and Monster Audio Cable to connect one of the docks to the Audio/TV
    - I need a power supply + cable (which one?) to be able to charge the iPod whilst on the "Audio/TV-dock?.
    - I need an FM transmitter (which one do you advise?) for in-car usage (I don't have a cassette player anymore so the cassette-adapter is no option). Any experience on the quality, is it better than normal broadcasts?
    - I need an iPod camera connector so I can connect it with my camera via an USB cable.
    Guess that's about it, right?
@arrowsparrow: The dutch translation is readable though not really correct. I get the idea but it is a bit too literal. If I didn't have the English text for reference it would be hard to understand parts of it. I think you can do a better job yourself once you took the dutch-course :>)
I just took a vacation (west coast of France)a few weeks ago so I won't be going again in short time.

  • Newbie Question: What happens if I get a new PC?

I just received a black video iPod for Christmas. So far, I've been able to buy, download and watch some TV shows and music from iTunes, and transfer some audio books from CDs and I love it. I have everything on a manual setting.
The problem is my PC is several years old now, is very slow, doesn't have enough memory, and the CD drive sometimes is flakey, so I am planning to replace the PC soon.
However, I've been told that everything on your PC has to match everything on your iPod, or else it'll overwrite everything.
Is this true even in manual mode? I don't want to lose everything I already have when I get my new PC, so do I have to transfer everything from the old to the new? How would I do that, since many of these files are huge and, as I said, the CD drive doesn't always work properly? What do people do if their PC crashes completely and one is no longer able to access the hard drive?
Compaq Notebook   Windows XP   Plan to replace soon

Thank you -- that is helpful.
I guess my question is twofold. First, how do you transfer to a new computer, which you've answered. The other part of the question, which I didn't really ask explicitly, is to do with manual vs. automatic syncing. It sounds like if it's on manual syncing, then one's iPod is not going to be overwritten by iTunes and you do not have to maintain everything on the PC the same as it is on the iPod. Is that correct?
Also, can I download to my iPod from two different PCs? For example, because my CD drive doesn't always work, I'd like to use my boyfriend's PC to upload my CDs. Since I won't be getting my new PC immediately (need to recover from Christmas first), is it possible for me to set up my iTunes account on his PC as well as on my own?
The person I talked to at the Apple Store told me that you can only use your iPod with one computer at a time and that it was something about copyright. Also, if you sync things manually Apple can't help with any support issues.

  • Newbye question : what do I need to just "play" a vm in my laptop ?

today I have vmware player and a few images.
my laptop is Win XP and I can not change that .
can Oracle VM substitute vmware on this specific scenario ?
(I must keep host OS = win XP).
I see this statement at the wiki page:
Oracle VM Server: A self-contained virtualization environment designed to provide a lightweight, secure, server-based platform for running virtual machines. Oracle VM Server is based on open source technology (Xen hypervisor for example) tailored by Oracle, and includes Oracle VM Agent to communicate with Oracle VM Manager for management of virtual machines
so.. sounds like what I need.. a self-contained (standalone ??) env, etc..
but I also see other places saying the installer will erase my HD !! that is ok for a server env but all I need is to play a VM every now and then at my win XP laptop.
I think that is not possible but I am not sure... can you guys confirm my understanding ?
    Thanks in advance !!

This means it is the only operating system running on the physical machine. It is the equivalent concept to VMware's ESX or ESXi products, not their workstation products.
Oracle does not currently have a desktop-based virtualization solution.

  • Newbie question... pointers needed

    Hi all,
Environment: Weblogic 6.1 SP2 Sun Solaris, Oracle 8.1.7
We've a large table where we need to assure that only one person at time
    updates certains rows of it.
Currently we're using direct connections from the client with "select for
update" but we are suffering from the performance penalty of establishing
these connections instead of using connection pools... and this is driving
weblogic to a halt. Also there are a lot of connections to the database and
some of them might be stalled from killed clients
What's the best way to implement this type of code efficiently?

My suggestion would be to use a connection pool, but I am not sure I
understand you situation well enough to come to that conclusion.
If you want to have only One person update a row at time. My suggestion,
and this is just one idea, would be to create a Singleton Class that has a
Synchronized list (or hashtable, or what ever would be easiest) of row keys
that are being updated. Only one user would be able to lock and unlock
a row at a time, but I don't think this will be a problem unless it takes a
long time to add something to your list of locked rows.
    public class LockedRows
private LockedRows()//can't be instantiated outside this class
    public static boolean isRowLocked(int rowId)
//if the rowId is in the list return true
    //else return false
    public static synchronized lockRow(int rowId)
    //add to your list
    public static synchronized unlockRow(int rowId)
//remove from your list or tree or hashtable
    just an idea.

The E71x is an AT&T Branded phone.  It is NOT the same thing as an unlocked E71 with a black case.  There are hardware differences and software differences between the E71x and the E71 line of phones.

  • IMAC Newbie Question: Prior PC Guy..help

Just bought a used IMAC 20 (MB388LL/A model number) with 4gb. It has the preloaded software iLife09 and Microsoft Office 08. He states he did not have the disks for that stuff...hence preloaded. What would I do if for some reason I needed to clean the harddrive and reinstall? Is there a way to do this?
Also, it has the snow leopard on it as well...but no disk. Should there be a disk or is this preloaded? Same question, what if i need to reformat etc....how would I get the operating system back on it without having to pay for a hard copy?
Btw, I got the Imac for 500.00, and its in pristine condition. Its the 2.4 dual core, 1066 front bus, 6mb Lcache, and its been upgraded to 4gb ram.
This is the 20 inch mac.....did I do good with the 500.00 price?

The model number indicates that it is a early 2008 model.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1758
If you order/buy a mac with MS Office preinstalled, they should supply a disc (if you go into the store tab and click on configure for a new iMac and look for Office 2008 and click Learn More it says they will provide you with a disc)If iLife 09 is installed, there must have been an install disc I would think since that wasn't out in 2008 (model year for the iMac). Snow Leopard would also require an install disc as well.
Unless these were all obtained by the previous owner via torrent files (illegally) and therefore there is no disc to provide.
If you need to do a format, you can back up data in the Applications folder which would contain the Office and iLife apps. Unlike Windows, you can simply copy the app folders and they will still work when you try and open them up again. I would recomend setting up time machine with an external drive. Then you could format the drive, do a fresh install (snow leopard disc needed for same OS) and then use migration assistant to bring back your user profile and apps and all that. Chances are that if you have restore discs that came with the machine they would be for Leopard. I don't know if you can restore a Snow Leopard backup from time machine onto a Leopard install.
The price doesn't seem too terrible it's under 50% of what it would have cost new back when it was purchased.
    Hope you enjoy it!

  • Newb question - ufsdump

    Hey guyz,
    Quick newb question:
What is the function of the n modifier in "ufsdump 4uf /dev/rmt/0n /export/home"?
    Thanks.

The tape device /dev/rmt/0 can be accessed through a number of "names". The exact name used indicates a exactly how the hardware should access the device.
/dev/rmt/0n is the no rewind version. If you don't add the n then the tape will be automatically rewound on close.
You have to use that version if you want to dump multiple things onto the tape one after the other.

  • Newbie Question:  How much computer do I need?

    Newbie Question:
I would like to use MainStage 3 in a live performance environment to play bars, parties, etc.  I'm not looping, using it to playback recordings, processing outboard equipment or vocal processing.  I want to stop carrying Rolands, Nords, Korgs, etc and get to a controller and a rack with a Mac Mini in it.
I tested a download of Mainstage 3 on my home Mac Mini (late 2012, 3.5 Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB drive) and it seemed to run fairly well.  $30 well invested so I trekked forward... I purchased a Mac Mini (late 2009,  2.52GHz Core 2 Duo, 6GB RAM, 128GB SSD) for $200.  I started to do more elaborate keyboard setups to see how the CPU would hold up.  It typically runs from 30% to 50% of capacity (CPU and Memory)  It actually boots and runs better than the i5.  I hear the occasion gitch, but it actually seems to be getting better in time (or I'm rock and roll deaf.
I got a rack, an Airport Express, a Radial USB interface and a Nektar Panorama P6.  It's starting to get expensive, but I'm emboldened by the actual quality for the sound and the flexibility of arranging for live performance.  What used to take me two and three keyboards to play, I can now fit on one performance patch.
OK, now the question... am I at the limits of this little Core 2 Duo?  Should I upgrade the i5 with more RAM and a bigger SSD and use that?  Should I get a new(er) i7 and bite the $1,500 bullet for the additional RAM and SSD?
I see that most of you are running pretty nice Macbook Pros with i7 and lots of everything.  My needs are modest; am I OK?
BTW, I want to run a Mac Mini in a box because I don't want to carry a laptop out in the open.  If I was doing bigger shows I wouldn't care but I play some rowdy bars and constantly have folks hanging off me while I'm playing.  It's fun, but hard on gear.  If you can't drop it or dip it in beer, it won't last long where I work.
    Matt Donnelly

Rule of thumb: newer and faster is better. But, depending the complexity of your needs you may be OK with an older Mac. Some glitches that happen in a live performance are due to loss of communication with USB or Firewire inputs, so make sure they're secure. I recently upgraded from a 2010 Mac Mini 2.6 dual core with 16 GB RAM, which was used live for nearly four years, to the latest Mac Mini 3.0 i7 with 16 GB RAM and a 500 GB SSD. I was getting an occasional stuck note with the older one. The new one is rock solid. Some of my patches may have up to a dozen channel strips mapped to three keyboards. The Mini is mounted in a rack next to a MOTU Ultralite Hybrid. It is a good idea to map a panic button on your keyboard to controller # 123(all notes off). Also, you might want to invest in a battery backup power supply(APC, Cyberpower, etc.-$40-$60) to protect your Mac against power loss, which can damage you hard drive.

  • OK, Newbie to Mac question.  Do I need to keep files after download/update

Sorry for such a boring newbie question.
(My last Mac was many years ago - the original Macintosh 528k with 2x 3.5" disks. The OS has changed 'a little', and doesn't have to be loaded in every startup!! Wow !!)
I had to go PC for business reasons, but now, I have <control> over my computing needs again. (Photographic business.)
OK. I searched Mac 101 but didn't find an answer.
Apart from Application Icons and/or Folders I have created, I have acquired a bunch of other files on the desktop. Do I need to keep them?
When I download updates, for example, I end up with a .dmg icons showing the HD in the center, with a title such as i1Match3-2.6Pantone.dmg (after updating my calibrator). I know the update is installed (and the app. is in the dock). Same with downloads or updates with Lightzone,, Firefox, etc.
First Question. Can I trash those .dmg icons?
Similarly, I have icons with what looks like an external HD, which I guess is the actual download. For example, RapidWeaver 3.5.1 (no extension), but there is also a .dmg icon. These "HD" icons cannot be dragged into a General Folder on the Desktop.
Second Question. If I can trash the .dmg icond, can I trash the "external HD" look icons once the program is installed. If I can't, where should they be kept ... I don't want them all over the Desktop ??
Third Question. I have some Folders which just materialized over a few days of use.
"Apples Caches" Folder (with arrow=shortcut?) with 10 file icons and 1 folder icon. Another ... "com.apple.kernelcaches" Folder with one 'kernelcache" file icon.
And three empty Folders "Edits", Measurement Data", and "Scan Tiffs". Have no idea why they popped up.
    What to do?
Thank you for reading my questions. I look forward to your proposed solutions.
    iMac 2.33 Intel Core Duo 2GB 667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM 24" LCD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G Drive 250GB Back Up; Epson V750M Scanner; Epson R2400 Printer; PS CS2 9.0.2; Aperture 1.5.2

    Al:
Thanks for the quick reply ! The .dmg's and the "HD" icons are now GONE. I am curious why they are needed after installions, but I will read up on that to satisfy my curiousity.
    Now, the remaining question ...
The two 'Apple caches' folders appeared on my desktop, just below the Macintosh HD icon, probably about a week or so after I got my Mac. I can't recall doing anything 'bad' or having any 'crash' or freeze-up. I seem to recall having to do a 'force quit' at one stage when I was setting up the scanner and Silverfast6Ai because I initially tried to instal non-Intel software. But on that occasion, everything fired right back up OK and the Mac has been absolutely brilliant ever since. What a wonderful change after XP and IE7 and all the daily drama.
The Folder which has the small black arrow (I guess shortcut) has files for:
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.kbdx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.tecx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.sbdl
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache
    com.apple.Components2.SystemCache.QuickTimeComponents
    com.apple.Components2.SystemCache.Components
plus it also contains a Folder:
    com.apple.kernelcaches ... which has
    kernelcache.ED112BB5 as the file.
Does this help you? I don't know if they have to be "put back" somewhere, or they are temporary files which can be trashed.
(As for the other empty folders "Edits" etc, my guess is they somehow arrived during a scan which I cancelled halfway through, or maybe from the Rapidweaver application when I was 'testdriving' the program. I am inclined to trash them anyway. Can't see how that would hurt.)
I reported that the question had been answered, anyway, but I would like MORE of the same !!
    Cheers
    CJ

  • I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device.

I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. Whenever I try to use it, it always says "All Devices Offline." This is regardless of whether I am in a good Wi-Fi zone or not.  I like to use Find My iPhone to remotely track my battery charging status whenever my phone is charging in a different room. That's been really handy, which is why I really need to get this fixed. No matter what computer I use, the problem is always the same.
My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device, especially considering the bad things I've heard about iOS 8.
    Feedback would be welcome ASAP.

You don't need to update to iOS 8 to use Find My iPhone.  If you haven't already tried, go to Settings>iCloud>Find My iPhone and turn it off, then reset your phone (hold the sleep/wake and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release).  After it restarts, turn Find My iPhone back on and see if it works properly now.

I have a new iMac. I have set up a user page for myself, for my wife and an administrator page. My question is my wife needs files from my user page transferred to her page. What's the easiest way?

I've done this by dragging files from my user page to her drop box. In Finder, drag the required files and hover over the hard disc icon in the navigation bar on the left. As you hover, it will open another finder window showing the contents. Work your way down these windows into <Her username | Public | Dropbox>. Drop the files into the dropbox. She can then retrieve them from her user page.
