Newbie Questions - Interlacing, Formats and exporting to iDVD

Sorry everybody, but I've got some issues. I'm new to Final Cut Express but I have a decent knowledge of digital video formats and resolutions, etc. I'm going to try to give as much information as possible so as to make your jobs easier.
I'm putting together a project for work that is using NTSC DV (4:3, 720x480) that I didn't shoot myself as well as a number of photographs (6-8 megapixels). I originally put the timeline together in iMovie '08 then exported as XML to FCE. I moved the pictures around using keyframes to create what iMovie likes to dub the "Ken Burns" effect (although I somehow doubt that he was the first to use it). The project is only about two and a half minutes long.
I read up on the best way to export to iDVD and found that creating a Quicktime reference movie then directing iDVD to that seems the best way as you're not encoding the video twice. Unfortunately, the final product ends up extremely choppy and interlacing artifacts are everywhere (especially in the photos). I tried playing on an actual television, thinking my iMac just wasn't de-interlacing the image correctly, and it still looks just awful and horribly choppy.
What did I do wrong?
Help!

Thanks for a quick response. The problem is apparent through the whole video, both video and still images. In Easy Setup it was set at DV-NTSC. When I exported from iMovie it basically just kept the videos at their right place in the timeline, the photos, text and music didn't move over, so all of that was imported in FCE as you thought.
I would describe the problem as being extremely jerky. Not starting and stopping, just horribly un-smooth (that's not a word). But I don't get those big macroblocks like when something is encoded at a low bitrate. Especially when panning over still photos, strait lines get very, very aliased. It draws a lot of attention to edges and lines in the photo.
If, instead of just creating a reference movie, I export as H.264 and choose "DeInterlace Source Material" it does seem a little smoother, but the photos still look pretty bad.
Thanks again for any help.

  • Timeline problem by mixing 4:3 and 16:9 clips and export to iDVD

    Have a few 4:3 clips dragged to timeline, rest 16:9. The 4:3 clips are shown in 16:9 modus (reduced hight, dim correct). The seq is set DV- PAL (not anamorfic). By exporting I use QT conversion, QT movie, DV-PAL, 4:3 asp rat. Result: All 16:9 clips are OK, but the 4:3 clips are expanded in the hight to fill the 4:3 TV screen. What to do, I want all in 16:9?
    When exporting to iDVD I want the result in 16:9.
    Another question: how achive best quality by exporting and iDVD prod.?
    Thanks ia!

    If you want to export a 16:9 movie you have to work in a 16:9 sequence.

  • IMOVIE SCROLLING CREDITS AND EXPORTING TO IDVD

    GREETING ALL MAC USERS
    I CREATED A VIDEO PROJECT IN IMOVIE WITH SCROLLING CREDITS. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN I EXPORT THE GOOD IMOVIE PROJECT WITH SCROLLING GREAT TO IDVD TO BURN ON A DVD DISC THE SCROLLING CREDITS SHOWS UP AS A BLANK WHITE SCROLLING SCREEN.
    I'VE HAD ONE ON ONES, GENIUS BAR, WORKSHOP AND ONLINE TECH SUPPORT. I'VE EXPORTED IN ALL FORMAT AND STILL THE SAME PROBLEM. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON HERE? HELPPPPPPPPPPPP!...LOL.

    Anyone? We had to delay our rollout. I'm so bummed about this. Doesn't Apple care that I cannot have credits at the end of my movie with the latest version on iMovie? Just a scrolling white screen. It stinks. I found someone who had a workaround by chopping the credits up into 4 second intervals. It looks terrible though - way too much black space in between the sections. I just don't know what to do.
    My credits total about 24 seconds and play with music. In iMovie they look fine. (Not all CAPS). Once I publish in any format to any place they turn into a solid white screen. PLEASE oh PLEASE help me. This is for WORK. Clearly I need to change applications...

  • Crystal Reports XI: formatting and exporting to Excel (VB 6)

    Hi.
    I have a VERY simple report that all I want it to do is display the numbers from a table EXACTLY as formatted and be able to export them to Excel, as NUMBER (not STRINGS).
    Example:
    My fields may contains the following values in a single column:
    45.02
    0.04454
    215
    And I want them to be displayed as entered in the source table.
    Initially, to maintain the formatting, I set the field's data type to a STRING.
    The problem is that when I then export the data to Excel, all the numerical values are treated as TEXT and we need to "Convert Text to Numbers".
    When I changed the field's data type to a DOUBLE, the data in the table is correct, but the report formats all the numbers in one way.  I want to be able to retain the formatting of the field (as-is) but have them exported as numbers, rather than text.
    Can this be done?
    Please advise!
    Thanks.
    AK

    I actuallly found my answer elsewhere (http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1235276&page=4).
    The Decimal formattion (x=2) for the fields can be set as follows:
    If CurrentFieldValue = Int(CurrentFieldValue) Then 0Else If CurrentFieldValue * 10 = Int(CurrentFieldValue * 10) Then 1
    Else If CurrentFieldValue * 100 = Int(CurrentFieldValue * 100) Then 2
    Else If CurrentFieldValue * 1000 = Int(CurrentFieldValue * 1000) Then 3
    Else If CurrentFieldValue * 10000 = Int(CurrentFieldValue * 10000) Then 4
    Else If CurrentFieldValue * 100000 = Int(CurrentFieldValue * 100000) Then 5
    Else If CurrentFieldValue * 1000000 = Int(CurrentFieldValue * 1000000) Then 6
    ElseDefaultAttribute
    Basically - this works.
    Hope this helps someone else!
    Thanks.

  • Fcp export in ntsc format and burn into IDVD

    i need help, when i export my fcp , i have set the settings for ntsc but in IDVD, when payed, it keeps jumping. although i did another one in pal, and things are ok, what setting do i have to put and also mpeg will work also or not. is pal regular in all the dvd players or ntsc?

    First, what is your sequence ntsc or pal? ntsc is the standard for north america. and pal is the rest of the world (for the most part). most pal players will play ntsc disks without a problem. and computers will play either pal or ntsc.
    You need to describe your workflow from shooting, thru capture, and editing. If you start with ntsc, stay with ntsc. If you start with pal, stay with pal. If you have pal material and need to create an ntsc dvd or vice-versa you need to do a standards conversion to your finished sequence.

  • Quick question about rendering and exporting with multiple presets

    Probably a very simple question but I'm pretty new to PPro, so I'd appreciate your help...
    I've got an uncompressed AVI video that I want to export to mp4 using several presets (that means several exports). What I intend to do is the following:
    I create a sequence and put my AVI file in there and then I just apply the preset and without rendering go to export media, select my export setting, and put it in the encoding queue at the Media Encoder. Then on the same sequence, I clear the preset and apply a new one, and again without rendering, go to export and then to the encoding queue. I repeat this for as many times as presets as I want to apply. At the end I have created (in no more than 2-3 minutes) several exports in the Adobe Media Encoder queue, that I can launch and go and do something else while encoding...
    My question: will the export files each have the different preset applied even though it was not rendered? if it does not work, would that work if I were to do this with each preset applied on a different sequence, even without rendering?
    Thanks in advance for your input!

    I create a sequence and put my AVI file in there and then I just apply the preset.
    Then on the same sequence, I clear the preset and apply a new one, and again without rendering, go to export and then to the encoding queue.
    Does "apply the preset" mean selecting an encoding preset
    before sending the Sequence to the Queue?
    If I understand what you are trying to do...
    It sounds like you want to do multiple, different format
    exports from the same Premiere Sequence.
    If so...
    I would Queue the Sequence to Media Encoder once from Premiere,
    then duplicate the entry in the Queue (Ctrl+D) and assign the
    different encode types to the duplicates in Media Encoder,
    (instead of Queueing the Sequence multiple times).
    ...will the export files each have the different preset applied even though it was not rendered?
    A Sequence will be encoded using the assigned settings.
    You can set multiple encodes in the Queue, each with different settings.
    I'm not sure what you mean by "even though it was not rendered...".
    Unless you have specified 'Use Preview Files' in your encoding,
    it will make no difference if your Sequence is 'Timeline Preview'
    rendered or not.

  • Newbie questions on fms and actionscript 3

    Ok, like I said I'm a newbie, but I do understand the differance between ssas and as3. Not all, but all most everything I see written in SSAS can be writen into a external AS3 file. This leads me to quite a few questions I'm hoping you kind people can shed some light on for me.
    1)  What is the advantage of writing a SSAS file over an external AS3 file?
    2) Can I write an .asc file in AS3 or do I have to use AS1? Please understand I'm using tuts from fmsguru.com and the books "Learning Flash Media Server" (pdf) and "Programming Flash Communication Server". I'm not a javascript programmer so nothing I do in AS1 seems to make any sence while everything I do in AS3 does. It may not seem like it to you people that are programmers, but to those of us that aren't, AS1 and AS3 are miles apart.
    3) kind of off topic, but a security question. I'm not a "hacker" and don't like the jerks that are. My question is on external AS / SSAS files and swf files. When my fla is compiled into a swf does my external AS files remain external? I assume they do, but then what is the threat of the swf being decompiled? In most projects I would do I could care less if somebody had access to my fla as long as they don't have my actionscript files.
    I don't know. Maybe on questions one and two I'm getting confused becasue I'm using out dated material. Again I assume that even though fms was built off of the javascript engine it should be able to read and execute my AS3 file. Other wise what was the point of the evolution of actionscript into a fully functional programming language?
    Thanks for any help you might have...

    1) I did not get this question correcly - for that matter SSAS can only be in AS1 - so i dont see reason comparing them
    2) It has to be AS1
    3) if you doing "include" stuff - i think code would go into compiled swf and proper decompiler would give you the code.
    Last para - Server-side engine understands only AS1 so it wont be able to read and understand your AS3 file.

  • Two Questions (Disk Format, and iTunes Backups)

    Hi all, I am switching from PC to Mac soon and plan to use a 1TB External as a backup disk with Time Machine. I have two questions however:
    1.) I know when I buy my external I will need to reformat it for Mac. I managed to find from one Apple Support article that I should use a GUID Partition scheme since I will be using the new macbook pro which is intel based. HOWEVER, I am hearing different things on formats. Apple says the most common format for TM is "Mac OS Extended", but it says it also supports things like "Mac OS Extended (Case sensitive, Journaled)", and another source said it's best to use "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" As you can see, this is a bit confusing for me. Which format is best for my backup disk?
    2.) I also hear it's easy for backup data to collect quickly, especially if you deal with lots of large files. I really want to backup my iTunes media and library, but I have about 55+gigs of content so far. Is it still best to use Time Machine to back this up or would you recommend to manually backup my iTunes library? (like make a second partition just for my iTunes backup)
    Any advice anyone has on either of these topics would be much appreciated!
    Thank you!

    Ok, so I know I'm going to use Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but now it says Case Sensitive is better? While I hear not case sensitive is better?
    I'm a bit confused, do I need to check what the internal drive is to make this decision?
    Yes, although it's almost certainly not case-sensitive.
    I read somewhere that Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (not case sensitive) is best for TM.
    Usually. Case-sensitive is TM's default, though.
    Does it really matter?
    It may.
    I'm only going to be using this one disk to back up my one drive.
    Review the pink box in #5 again.
    If your internal HD is case-sensitive, your backups must be the same. There's no choice.
    If it's not, and you don't anticipate using any case-sensitive volumes (a few 3rd-party apps require it), then you're probably better off with case-ignorant: +Mac OS Extended (Journaled).+

  • Linked libraries and exporting to IDVD or Imovie

    If you use linked libraries does Iphoto 6 export the photos to IDVD or Imovie the same as if you have the photos stored in Iphoto library? I am just setting up and would like to know before I choose how to organize my stuff. Thanks
    G4 466, G3 233 Desktop   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   ipod-photo 60g iphoto&idvd-6

    Madsen:
    Yes. iMovie and iDVD will see the "alias" library and it's photos and albums. It cannot see the individual rolls so you will need to create an album of those photos you want to use in the iDVD or iMovie project. FWIW I've created a workflow to move from a conventional V5 or V6 library to an alias based library with a folder system based on the current rolls in the library. You could change the groupings in either the V5 or V6 library before starting the process by creating new rolls for your selected groups of photos.

  • Newbie question: Rotating video and resizing the frame

    Hey guys'n'gals,
    I'm new at doing "advanced" (relative term) editing to video in Adobe Premiere Pro (CS4 version 4.2.1) and was hoping that 1) there's a way to change the output size of a video (IE: 640X480 to 480X640), 2) that someone can please tell me how, and 3) how to  rotate the video that's currently sideways.
    Thanks in advance,
    Brandon

    Brandon,
    I'm not sure that I am following. You say that you have the Video shot vertically, i.e. rotated 90 degrees, but then want to Export to a vertical Aspect Ratio.
    First, you can just choose a Desktop Preset, set the Aspect Ratio to match your footage, and then Export that to a delivery scheme that allows complete control of the Aspect Ratio - obviously not any of the DV/BD formats.
    Now, if you want to Rotate that vertical footage to horizontal, you can use the fixed Effect>Rotate. Note: you will have to now resize your footage to fit into a horizontal Frame Size Aspect Ratio. This would then allow you to Export to a horizontal Aspect Ratio, but I am not sure that this is what you really want in the end.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Newbie Question: Java -Xmx and other settings...

    Hi all I have a simple question,
    I know that you can use the -Xms and -Xmx to set the heap size, but when I run this command is it permanent or do I have to set it each time I boot up my Windows system? How do tell what the current heap size is?
    I would be grateful for any help.
    Thanks!

    My dear Friend,
    if you are running your program with
    java -Xmx 1024 -Xms 500 ....
    This values you are using are like jvm arguments and you have to provide them everytime you are running your program.....

  • Newbie question about component and UDF usage.

    This will be the 1st time I'm coding a component and UDF. I
    kind of understand the concept but not sure about how to write it
    in detail.Such as passing the parameter, etc.
    I'm starting to write a user login, verifying users before
    allowing them to enter into the app.
    So I have 2 fields in my login form, Login and password.
    Upon submitting this form, on the actionpage.cfm I'm calling
    a component. This is how I call the component:
    <CFINVOKE Component="cfc/loginaction"
    Method="AuthentiCateUser" ReturnVariable="UserInfo">
    Then in my Component I have the following:
    <CFCOMPONENT>
    <CFFUNCTION Name="AuthentiCateUser" RETURNTYPE="Query"
    hint="Use for user login">
    <CFARGUMENT Name="login" Type="Structure"
    Required="true">
    <CFARGUMENT Name="password" Type="Structure"
    Required="true">
    <!--- checking user authentication --->
    <CFQUERY NAME="Authenticate" DATASOURCE="sendfast">
    SELECT * FROM tblcustomer WHERE Login = '#Login#' AND
    Password = '#Password#'
    </CFQUERY>
    <CFRETURN AuthentiCateUser>
    </CFFUNCTION>
    </CFCOMPONENT>
    When I run this code, I got error, it said :
    The parameter LOGIN to function AuthentiCateUser is required
    but was not passed in.
    The error occurred in
    C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot\KDt_Mod\userloginaction.cfm: line 18
    16 : <CFSET
    UserLoginInfo["Password"]="#Form.Password#"> 17 : 18 :
    <CFINVOKE Component="cfc/loginaction" Method="AuthentiCateUser"
    ReturnVariable="UserInfo">
    19 :
    My question is:
    What should I do in order to pass #Form.Login# and
    #Form.Password# to my UDF within my component?
    I'm using CFMX 6 and Micrisift SQL 8

    I've applied cfinvokeargument and my login and password were
    passed to my component.
    But I'm facing new problem: Where should I write my
    authentication? should I write user authentication within my
    component or
    loginaction.cfm (the calling template)
    What I mean by authentication is something like this:
    <CFIF #Authenticate.RecordCount# IS NOT 0>
    <cfset session.CustomerID
    ="#Authenticate.customerid#">
    <cfset session.Name ="#Authenticate.Name#">
    <CFCOOKIE NAME="UserLoginIn"
    VALUE="12345_pn#Authenticate.customerid#">
    <cflocation url="index.cfm?loc=home">
    <CFELSE>
    <script language="JavaScript">
    alert("Username/password is not found, plese try again");
    history.go(-1);
    </script>
    <cfabort>
    </CFIF>
    If I keep this code in my loginaction.cfm what is returned
    from my function is not recognized by the component, the error said
    Authenticate.RecordCount is not recognized.
    Also I'm still confuse with what should I put in the
    RETURNTYPE. If I put query, it gave me error, also, what is
    returned by CFRETURN.
    This is my component:
    <CFCOMPONENT>
    <CFFUNCTION Name="AuthentiCateUser" RETURNTYPE="Query"
    hint="Use for user login">
    <CFARGUMENT Name="login" Type="Structure"
    Required="true">
    <CFARGUMENT Name="password" Type="Structure"
    Required="true">
    <!--- checking user authentication --->
    <CFQUERY NAME="Authenticate" DATASOURCE="sendfast">
    SELECT * FROM tblcustomer WHERE Login = '#Login#' AND
    Password = '#Password#'
    </CFQUERY>
    <CFRETURN AuthentiCateUser>
    </CFFUNCTION>

  • 2 basic questions/ viewing clips and exporting to quicktime

    I have to problems thus far. 1stly, I'd like to figure if I can utilize the playback feature for more than one clip at a time. Whenever I try to use it, it only plays one clip then stops at the end, though i'd prefer it continue on through the transition into the next clip.
    2ndly, I've exported the clip into a quicktime file and uploaded it to my .mac account. People using apples can view it, but window's users cannot. NOr can they view it when I export it to a full size .mov and just email it to them. It tells them they're missing some compressor. Downloading the newest version of QT does not help either.
    Any help in either or both of these matters is greatly appreciated.

    Hi John,
    the uploading to .mac usually uses a sorenson codec in a .mov container.
    That can be watched on PC just when the free Quicktime Player for Windows is installed. does your friends have done that...?
    … It tells them they're missing some compressor. Downloading the newest version of QT does not help either. …newest version for PC or on your Mac's side?
    QT7 offers now the brandnew h.264 compression codec... this isn't supported on the Windows side yet (just experimental/beta)... so using the "latest" is maybe the wrong way...
    in the iM export dialog you'll find the option ".avi" (PC container + sorenson codec)… try that for a mail (big files!) and your friends should see your movie...
    and tell them, they shall buy a Mac, hey, c'mon!
    you can offer downloads of your project on .mac, but not as convenient as the "upload to" function. ... but that is another cup of tea......

  • Crystal Reports 9.2.0.448 Formatting and exporting issues on CSV file

    Hello,
    when starting export to csv, excel or text - out of the crystal reports preview - content gets lost, i.e. crystal cuts parts of the csv text.
    If I try exporting to word or pdf the whole content is being exported.
    Can anybody tell me how to fix that problem?
    Is this a known issue? Does there probably already exist a hotfix? I couldn't find any.
    Would be great, if someone helped me!
    Monika

    Hi Monika,
    No more fixes done to CR 9 since it's so old. Go to this link and download any patches you can find for CR 9:
    http://service.sap.com/sap/bc/bsp/spn/bobj_download/main.htm
    If that doesn't work try increasing the field width or using the Can Grow option. If that doesn't work then try downloading a trial version of CR XI R2 or Cr 2008 and test again. I suggest you try this on a PC other than your main PC just in case. We support side by side installs but you never know what it may do depending on what else you have installed.
    Thank you

  • Vim newbie question about formatting code

    I just started learning vim and am wondering how I can get it to auto format some code.  For example:
    check() {
    for i in $nodes; do
    ping -c 1 $i > /dev/null
    if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
    echo "Looks like $i is up so initializing the cluster on it."
    ssh $i "\$HOME/bin/cluster-setup.sh"
    fi
    done
    I have tabstop=3 in my ~/.vimrc and I'd just like to apply formatting to that code block so it looks like:
    check() {
    for i in $nodes; do
    ping -c 1 $i > /dev/null
    if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
    echo "Looks like $i is up so initializing the cluster on it."
    ssh $i "\$HOME/bin/cluster-setup.sh"
    fi
    done
    I read about =i{ but it has no effect for me.
    Thanks!

    graysky,
    If you want vim to autoindent while typing, customize your ~/.vimrc file. I posted mine here: http://linuxandsuch.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/my-vimrc/ a few days back. I recommend all the options.
    However, if you want to indent an already existing file use the indent program. Install with
    sudo pacman -S indent
    And then, to indent your file, run:
    indent myfile.c
    I'd recommend reading the manpage for indent to learn to tweak it to your coding style though .
