Newbie test drives Pre, Pixi, & iPhone, picks iPhone

I took a friend of mine shopping for a new cell phone.  She had played with my Pre a bit, and she was coming from a Blackberry Pearl.  It was interesting to see what worked for her and what didn't.
I thought she was sold on the Pixi when we left the house, after comparing the phones via the web, but this didn't last.  When we got to the mall, we played with Android phones, with the Pixi, and with the iPhone.
The Android phones were confusing and cluttered and she quickly ruled them out.
She wasn't attracted to the Pre form factor, for whatever reason.  It may be because her finger nails were too long (about a quarter inch) to type on the top row of the Pre keyboard.  It had come down to the Pixi and the iPhone.
After a bit of explaining, she managed to be able to close applications on the Pixi, and really liked how that worked. I don't think she ever distinguished between backgrounding and closing apps though -- she would just keep flicking until the app disappeared.  I suspect it was a bit frustrating for her to have to keep "repeating" the gesture.  And somehow the Pixi landed in a wierd state where graphical elements were overlapping when they shouldn't have been, and I had to help her return to a screen that made sense again.  This did not help the Pixi.  She was also making a lot of mistakes typing on the keyboard, and that frustrated her.
We hit the Apple store last.  She loved the look of the new white iPhone.  She found typing on it to be much less frustrating, and while she did make mistakes, she declared it a lot easier to use, probably because of the keypress balloons.  She did keep trying to background the apps with a flick of the finger, so that webOS gesture must be really intuitive. Neither of us knew how to close apps on the thing, but she quickly figured out that you just press the bottom button.  When she did that, she looked up at me and said, "See?  Easy!  That's the way I like it."
So she bought the iPhone, despite the greater cost.
To summarize, here is why she chose the iPhone over the Pre and Pixi:
(1) Her nails prevented her from easily typing on the top row of the Pre keyboard.
(2) The iPhone's form was more aesthetically appealing to her than the Pixi's.
(3) She never distinguished backgrounding from closing apps, and this frustrated her.
(4) The iPhone's virtual keyboard was somehow easier for her, perhaps because the balloons gave her more confidence in her typing.
As she explained it, "I need a phone that's really easy to use."
... Just wanted to share this with the Palm folks to help them improve things in the future.

Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

It was a while ago that I posted that message.  Just FYI, I switched from the Pre on Sprint to the Pixi on Verizon.  Monthly bill is more expensive, but I get a better signal at my house.
I love the Pixi.  I find it easier to type on.  The keyboard is different and I can type with both thumbs at once.  I had trouble doing that on the Pre because it took at least one thumb to hold the phone.
webOS is a better OS than the iPhone.  I get text message and email notices no matter what app I'm in.  I can pull up contacts while talking on the phone, can pull up a map to give someone directions while talking, can take notes while I'm talking to the person on speaker phone.  It is the OS of the future, but it lags in apps.  I also use an iPod Touch (iPhone minus phone) for certain apps that I can't get on webOS.
Pixi is free on Verizon right now, I believe.  Plus, you can use it as a hotspot to give a laptop (or iPod Touch or iPad) Internet access from anywhere your phone as Internet access -- that's free on Verizon too.
Also, HP recently bought Palm, so we shouldn't have to worry any more about Palm going under or not having the resources to invest in webOS.
I transfered my contacts from my old Centro to the old Palm Desktop and then downloaded a special app from Palm that transfers from the old Palm Desktop to webOS.  I also bought The Missing Sync for the Palm to keep contacts synced with my Mac.
HTH.

  • Activating pre-odered iPhone 4 at home

Question from an iPhone newbie: If I pre-order through Apple online, how do I activate the phone when it arrives? I'm an AT&T customer, currently off-contract (yet still fully qualified for upgrade price, etc). I was going to pre-order at either the local Apple or AT&T store, then go in on the 24th and pick it up and activate it right there. Is it a hassle doing it at home, for example through iTunes? What are the procedures that work best? Thanks for your input.

There has been some question about how an iPhone 4 pre-order shipped to your home or office will be activated. iPhone activation at an Apple store, AT&T store, Best Buy, and any other retailer is done with iTunes, so I think the same will apply with the iPhone 4 unless this has been changed.
When the original iPhone was released, activation with AT&T was done with iTunes in the comfort of your home - not at an Apple store or AT&T store. I purchased the original iPhone at an AT&T store and I returned home to do the activation with AT&T with iTunes.
You power the iPhone on and connect it to iTunes and the AT&T activation process will be provided automatically, which is simple/easy, straight forward, and quick.

  • Importing a contact folder from external hard drive onto new iphone

It is kind of a long story...my mom was updating iphone on computer when computer crashed. iphone crashed. had friend move all info from crashed computer onto external hard drive. got new iphone.
so, she no longer has a computer and we have to share mine. she has her own itunes on an external drive and i have my own itunes on another hard drive. i got almost everything except the contacts moved back on her phone. i see the folder and contacts in a 'contact' folder on the external hard drive, but how do I move that to the new iphone without it being in outlook/google/yahoo. i tried 'adding folder' to the library containing the contacts, but that didn't work.
    any suggestions? thanks!!!

thanks for the advise about the two users. so, i did that. but, now cannot seem to import the contact folder into the Address Book. the files in the 'contact'-hard drive are called CONTACT files (.contact). i don't know what that means. can i open those in the address book?

  • How do i set up my pre owned iphone 4 with my giffgaff sim card that was used in my iphone 3gs

how do i set up my pre owned iphone 4 with my giffgaff sim card that i have been using in my iphone 3gs
My 3Gs is on its last legs.... I've just bought a second hand iphone 4 which is unlocked......I put my giffgaff sim card in the new phone and it says activation required ......then it asks me for a passcode???  PLEASE HELP!!!! I have no idea what to do xx

You need to connect the phone to iTunes and then try activating it from there and restoring it as new.
If you have further problems and especially as the iPhone you have bought is second hand, it could be that it is not unlocked.  Are you sure that it is?  If not, then you'll need to speak to the person that you purchased it from.

    dave0915,
iTunes stores your iPhone backups in the Library folder in your Home folder.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

  • I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?

I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?  Do I have to make a playlist for each cd and then transfer it to my iPhone?

When you buy your new iMac you will be able to have the installation process transfer all your applications, data (including music, pictures, documents, etc) and settings to your new computer. In the past that was done via Firewire. I'm not entirely sure of the process with the new iMacs that don't have firewire. I think it can be done via ethernet and probably via tha thunderbolt cord using a firewire adapter but you'll want to check that out.
With the your new computer properly connected to your old computer, the initial booting of the new computer will include the ability to move everything over.
If for some reason you don't want to do that (smart if you have some horrible software issue that is causing problems) you can connect your old computer to the new one and start it in Target Disk mode where it will be seen as a hard drive. You can then manually copy over all your music and import that into iTunes (and any other data you want).
Somebody here will surely point you to directions for connecting an older iMac with no Thunderbolt to a newer iMac with no Firewire.

How do I delete SMS text from the hard drive of a iPhone 3GS

If you want to delete the messages from within the text app, swipe over the name or number of the sender and hit delete.
If you are afraid that someone will be able to restore them by ckecking your HD, you will have to set up the phone "as new device" or choose "erase all content and Settings" in Settings/General/Reset. But this willerase the whole phone, not only your text messages.

  • Adding to a pre synced iPhone??

    Dilemma:
Have an iPhone 4 wich is synced to an iMac, sync includes, iCal, contacts, notes, music, photo's, movies, music, etc... The works.
Problem is, I am currently travelling with my Macbook Air, with no library or syncs, and need to add an additonal Movie onto my iPhone, I realise if I connect it to my macbook, and check *Manually manage.. It will wipe the photos, music, movies etc, I am obivously avoiding this at all costs.
My iCloud only holds my iCal, and contact info, so that is not an option either.
Is there a way to add to a Pre-synced iPhone from another itunes library??
    Regards

Don't try or you will have a mess on your hands.  Instead try transferring the movie wirelessly using an app like PhotoSync.  It will transfer the movie to your Camera Roll.  (If the movie isn't "iPhone ready", import it to iTunes on your MacBook Air, create and iPhone version (iTunes>Advanced>Create iPod or iPhone version), drag that version to your desktop and transfer that using the app.

  • How do I email files from icloud drive on an iPhone?

I have few PDF files saved on icloud drive through my mac. I want to access those files on my iPhone and email them to others. How do i do that?
Presently I am using google drive and it allows me to email my files from google drive on an iphone.

This happens to me quite often on my iPhone5, and my iPad. I find it the most helpful to go under settings and reset to factory everything. SEtting> general> erase all content and settings.
Please make sure you do a back up before you do this!!!!!
You'll be basically wiping the phone clean and when the phone resets, reset from back up.
I've also found that when I go under voicemail and view deleted voicemails to delete all of them. Delete text messages that you no longer need to keep. Hope this helps.

Can I pre-order Iphone 5 from apple website and does it cost extra to pre-order?

your bound to get a long line up where ever you are near an official apple store, but if youtr planning on getting by one of your carreirs it depends where you live as i was able to get iphone on the day it was released at my carriers store, though im exploring other options atm, whether it worth buying it out on apple store, work out my average data usage and just buy data packs for like $5 - $20, but no idea what atm.

Windows 7 will not let me update the driver for my iphone 4s so I can see it in iTunes. Any suggestions?

You turned off all firewall and antivirus ? You could try downloading the update via a browser - what device are your trying to download the update for ? If it's an iPhone 4 :
    GSM / sim card model
    CDMA model
Then in iTunes press and hold the shift key on Windows when clicking the Check For Updates button which should let you navigate to the downloaded file

  • I would like to use iCloud drive on my iPhone instead of dropbox but there is no app. Any suggestions??

    Hi -
I would like to use iCloud drive on my iPhone and access all my files. I can do that very easily using Dropbox but I cannot find an app for iCloud Drive that works the same way. Am I overlooking something?????

For individual Apps to access iCloud drive, the APP Developer must set that up.  If it is not an option in a specific application that you use, you should submit feedback to the App Developer to add the feature.

  • Is there a flash drive for the iPhone 5 so I can share

Is there a flash drive for the iPhone 5 that I can plug into my phone, copy all of the hundreds of photos and videos I've taken of my baby nephew using the iPhone camera to, and then pull out so I can just give the drive to my sister? Downloading/transferring all those photos and videos to my computer, then emailing or sorting and burning them to a disc would take FOREVER. The photos and videos of the baby are all mixed in with my personal photos and videos I've taken and sorting them out would be a nightmare. Plus, I want the original photos and videos to remain on my camera even after I copy them for my sister. Any help/ideas would be most appreciated!

    Hi Allan,
    Thank you for responding.
One clarification: I agree that the iPhone is not for long-term photo storage and I'm not looking to use it that way. What I'm looking for is a quick and easy way for me to get the photos/videos of my nephew to my sister so SHE can store them long-term. (Then I can delete all but a few of them and transfer them to my computer for storage pretty quickly and easily). The way I know to get all those photos/videos to her would take a very long time (which I don't have) and would require a lot of time sorting (which I don't have time to do either). Please don't suggest I pare down the photos and videos for her. This baby is a miracle baby and the Mom needs to get all the photos and videos. Understand where I'm coming from?
Regarding not keeping any favorite photos/videos on an iPhone: It seems normal to have some favorite photos and videos remain on an iPhone, kind of like a "Grandma's brag book" of most beloved photos. Even the most no-nonsense person might have 20-30 photos of someone or something they love, so they can share them with interested people or peruse them when they want to feel connected or be grounded.
I can't be the only person dealing with this issue/needing this type of hardware. Opportunities and need for photo sharing abound. If nothing else, it seems like an easy way for Apple to make a whole lot of extra money while making a whole lot of consumers very, very happy.
Any advice? Again, thanks very much.
