Newbie To Mac, Forum...

I'm not sure where to post this question:
I'm about to receive a new 2.8imac and hope to use Adobe Elements 2.0 (sufficient for my needs) and Frontpage (also) using bootcamp and Fusion software. Will I have a problem? I've read elsewhere that Leopard won't run older Adobe products, but is that true if I'm running it in Windows?
Thanks for any advice.

To be honest, if I were you I'd use the OS X version of Elements 4.0, both for stability and for some of the features included that you will frequently use. I'd also explore iPhoto first and see if you need to use Elements at all. I've dropped it with the latest version of iPhoto. You'll also get iWeb on the new machine, try it and see if you like it better than Fusion.
Spend the money and buy iWorks then use Pages instead of Frontpage. You will be glad that you did.
Do you have a legal copy of Windows XP or Windows Vista Ultimate? You are going to need it to use Bootcamp.

I noticed several permissions changes after the last install of iTunes.
Launch Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and run the permissions repair routine on your hard drive. Then run verify disk. If any error is reported by the verify disk routine, restart your computer while holding down the Shift key. This will boot you into Safe Mode. The restart will take longer than normal, as diagnostic and repair routines are taking place. When the Finder shows up, restart normally. Then try your CD again.

  • How Do I Unsubscribe from the Mac-Forums Newsletter?

Apple has started another newsletter.  I don't want it. The One-Click Unsubscribe button at the bottom does not work. Nor does the Manage Subscriptions button. They both just tell you to log in and manage your email notifications. In addition to relentlessly tweaking software to make it less and less user friendly (iTunes, anyone?) Apple is turning into just another annoying corporation that harrasses you to buy stuff you don't want. Shame. Used to be a classy outfit.

  • Time Capsule newbie to Mac Networking.

First newbie to Mac Networking. At home Apple products include 1-iMac, 2-MacBook Pro, 1 Macbook Air, 4-iPhones and HP printer all wireless networked with Verizon Fios Router. Having lag issues with internet and printer connectivity. House is three levels, whereas need connectivity at any given time.
Question: Am looking to purchase Time Capsule (3 TB) in hopes that this will extend the range and help with the connectivity issues plus a wireless backup for me. Have a external 3 TB connected to the iMac for backup with TimeMachine. None of the MacBooks have backup capabilities. Will this help with backing up just the MacBooks? Is this all I need?
Question: Would I need a Airport Express station on third and basement levels to help with the network connectivity, if the Time Capsule is located on the second level of the house?
Need a best setup before I go out and spend monies on product(s) that I would need or not need. Appreciate any help! Thanks for the time.

Question: Am looking to purchase Time Capsule (3 TB) in hopes that this will extend the range and help with the connectivity issues plus a wireless backup for me
Welcome to the community support area for the Time Capsule!
Let's start with one question first and get that clarified, since this will determine the answers to your other questions.
When you say that you want the Time Capsule to extend the range of the wireless network, this implies that the Time Capsule will be located on another floor or some distance away from the Fios router.
In this case, the Time Capsule must connect to the Fios router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. It cannot connect to the FIos router using only a wireless connection.
Specifially, connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the Fios router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule and configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network that uses the same wireless network name and same password as the Fios wireless network. Then, you will have one "big" wireless network.
So, the first question here would be whether or not you are able to consider this type of installation.

  • Just a MAC forum?

Wouldn't it be great to have a MAC forum. I now, it is a delicate question, but then MAC user have a tiny little space around here to?
Linux, Windows, OSclassic), Symbian are all familiar with MAC addresses

That latest update is a removal tool for the Flashback trojan.
One of the ways the earlier versions of that trojan were distributed was through fake Adobe Flash downloaders.
Why are you repeatedly installing Adobe Flash Player? (not iPlayer - that's a BBC thing.)
The only place from which to get the Flash Player plug-in is directly from Adobe themselves - Never Trust a Pop Up that says you have a missing plugin!
Also be aware that the Flash Player is not a standalone player; it's a plug-in which installs in the Library and is available for all the browsers to use.
As for what you do now?
Nothing for the moment - you should be clear.
But to be on the safe side, go to the Prefences for each of your browsers and disable Java (not JavaScript - that's a whole different animal). As Java is the vector used by the most recent versions, that should ensure you don't get reinfected.

  • Power Mac forum hacked!

So the recent "improvements" to "increase organization and accessibility" turned out to be equivalent to dumping all the laundry in a corner of a room.
Socks, shirts, underwear- all just a mass of cloth with no organization.
Picked up a new little brother, the G3 tower, which when separate before, kept most stray posts at bay. We'll see how it goes from here.......
Besides, it's a Power Macintosh, not a Power Mac.
Seems product line mixing is part of "organization".......
Beyond the esthetically displeasing aspects, and the fact that now one can't see what a topic is in regard to at a glance, the top users of the categories were also hacked.
As the top user in the Power Mac forum, I had at least 12370 points.
I worked very, VERY hard for this recognition.
NOW, I have a whopping 3915 as top user in the Power Mac forum.
There are +at least+ 9 other individuals in the Power Mac forum, and then each sub category, that are also affected.
Not only did the organization diminish the accessibility to the forum, it also diminished the stautus, and thus the perceived worth, of those that work so hard to provide support where Apple does not.
We don't get much for our time here.
Now you managed to make the time spent just that much less important.
I feel ripped off and unappreciated.
Childish, maybe, but I feel that I am not alone in these thoughts and feelings.....

I had a theory about "online posts" in the other thread that I though would explain the problem. But all your posts are still online, so there goes that theory. Perhaps something else with the reorganization moved things around to cause you to lose points. You are still the top user.
Not only did the organization diminish the accessibility to the forum, it also diminished the stautus, and thus the perceived worth, of those that work so hard to provide support where Apple does not.
Not really. You still have all your level 4 points. I've never understood where those "Top Users" points come from. I don't think that is a good place to look. That is where you are competing with other users. The level 4 is all yours and is an objective measurement. Other people can knock you off of top user status even without database reorganizations.
We don't get much for our time here.
The satisfaction of a job well done?
I feel ripped off and unappreciated.
Childish, maybe, but I feel that I am not alone in these thoughts and feelings.....
You are not alone. I'm sure you are not unappreciated. You may have been ripped off, albeit inadvertently.

  • Newbie to Mac OS MBP

I just purchased my first Mac and I am loving it!!!  I've used Windows for the past 20 years.  I'm trying to decide if I should use something like Paralells to have W7 on my MBP.  Since I can install Office 2011, the only reason to have W7 installed is for specific work applications where there is no Mac OS version.  I'm leaning toward not having W7 installed partly because I'm not sure how the virtualization tools will affect the MBP performance.  I can potentially get by without these applications installed.  Could I get some feedback on folks who use both Mac OS and W7 on their system?  Thanks.

  • Newbie to Mac - help with root account?

I recently bought a used Macbook Pro from someone which is running the latest OS 10.6.2. This is my first Mac (I'm a former Windows guy), and didn't think to check if they set a root password. There was not a password on the admin account. When I type su, it prompts for a password, but I don't know what it is. I'm unable to get in contact with the person I purchased the machine from, and they didn't give me the original CDs.
    1) How do I tell is root IS enabled or not?
    2) If it is, is there a way to disable/remove it as Admin?
I've tried following the directions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528 but I don't see the edit button it is referring to in the instructions. Any assistance is appreciated. Here's the instructions I was trying to follow.
How to disable the root user
Mac OS X v10.6 and later
    1. From the Apple menu choose System Preferences....
    2. From the View menu choose Accounts.
    3. Click on the lock and authenticate with an administrator account.
    4. Click Login Options....
    5. Click the "Edit..." button at the bottom right
    6. Click the "Open Directory Utility..." button.
    7. Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
    8. Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
    9. Choose Disable Root User from the Edit menu.

    Hi
You're in the wrong forum. You should be here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=263
+"How do I tell if root is enabled or not?"+
On the Client OS root is not enabled by default and it does not have a password set either. For the sudo or su command to work you will need to define a password for root.
What is it about the instructions you don't understand?
Select System Preferences from the Apple Menu, click on Accounts, click on Login Options, click Join, click the Open Directory button. The Directory Utility program should now launch. Click the lock in the bottom left hand corner and authenticate using the name and password of the admin account you already have. If there is no password set for that account just click OK. In the Menu Bar for that utility/application you should see an Edit Menu. It will be between the File and Window Menus. Click on the Menu and 3rd from bottom what do you see?
You could also enable root by using passwd from the command line:
    passwd root
The rest should be fairly obvious from there?

  • Newbie to mac need help

Let me preface by saying I'm completely new to the world of mac, I got an emac 1ghz for $50, I don't have an apple keyboard I'm using a regular windows based keyboard by that I mean I don't have any apple keys on my keyboard. Here's my problem, I can't see the Super drive on the desktop or on the side tab when I use finder. I put in the World of Warcraft dvd thinking it would just auto launch and it doesn't. I don't know how to go into the drive and run it and I cant find it anywhere. When I got to system profiler I can see it says I have one and I managed to put a little eject button on the top by the clock, but whenever I put a disk in regardless of the format I can never find it. I'm having a real hard time using the forums because I don't know how to navigate through mac OS and the lack of the apple keyboard doesn't make things any easier. I'm completely proficient in windows and I really want to give mac a shot but I'm finding it incredibly hard to make the transition, can anyone help?

Make sure you are using a Mac version of World of Warcraft, otherwise your computer will not play it. Also, Macs rarely use autorun on games and applications. You may experience trouble using a Mac on a day-to-day basis without a Macintosh keyboard, as Windows keyboards do not have 'eject' keys, or keys for Expose or the Dashboard. If you are completely new to Mac I suggest you take a look at http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/ and watch all the tutorials. You have not specified which version of Mac OS you use.
