Newbie to Mac- program install issues.

Howdie all.
I just received a G4 titanium laptop as a gift from my dad-- his old laptop.
I, like many others, came from a pure windows experience-- don't hold it against me, it's a new experience.
My reason for posting is that I tried installing NetBeans 6.5.1 programming IDE last night, and it said that the install failed. However, the netbeans.app is showing in my applications folder.
It doesn't allow me to do anything with it though, so at this point I'm both stuck, and confused.
I did some digging around on the computer and found that I only have "read only" privileges, and everything is grayed out so that I'm unable to modify anything that'd allow me access to the program.
For what I'm guessing would be the first question-- My dad removed his administrator account, and I placed mine on the laptop. Thus, when I got done downloading the dmg file, it began the install process, and asked me for my admin. password, which I did provide.
The install processed all the way through, and then at the last moment-- making me believe the install took-- it said the installation failed, and that I needed to try again.
Any ideas, or direction?

Hmmm, try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, when it completes, try reinstalling again, the reboot.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

You can even read things from apple; you can download pdfs and read something interesting.
For example: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/index.html and start in the "Getting Started" part and "Fundamentals". These topics will give you a way to explore.
You can learn Carbon also: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Carbon/index.html for your C++ code.
And then you can Mix Objective-C, C and even C++ to get your application flying!!
Objective-C for the interface (usind Interface Builder) and Mix it with you C or C++ code for special behavior - this could be you model (in Objective-C policy!!).

Mac re install issue

I have a late 2006 mac book pro. About a year ago I updated to 10.6.2 and recently the computer stoped booting up. All it showed was a lil spining circle with the apple logo and also there was a progress bar that only seemed to move 1/10th of the way. My question is I want to restore 10.6.2 but i'm not sure what disk to use?

You use the 10.6.2 disk. Insert the disk and reboot while holding down the 'c' key.

When I open about this mac - more info and I switch through the tabs (display,memory,storage,support,service) it lags (fps drops, animation looks choppy not smooth). Why does this happen? (over 300 gb free,same programs installed,free desk-downloads)

Hmmmm... would appear that you need to be actually logged in to enable the additional menu features.
Have you tried deletting the plists for MAS?

Mac OSX: Flash CS3 Font Install Issues

Hi,
I have a Mac Powerbook G4 with OS X installed and Adobe CS3.
I've installed a font. The font works in Photoshop and Illustrator
but not in Flash CS3. Why? I've put the font in the Library/Fonts
folder and the User/Fonts folder and it still doesn't show up in
Flash. Apparently this is a problem for a number of people see

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
Unfortunately, it looks like something is wrong with the file system and the installer can't see the root drive to install to. A Google search returns numerous results affecting various products and the recurring theme is that something is wrong with the disk. There are many recommendations from various sources, but nothing definitive.

I would try the following options:
Try using the PKG installer. This is used Mac SysAdmins to install Flash Player within their organization and uses a slightly different installer path, which may or may not work.
Some people have had success with disk and permissions repair some have not. You can try running a disk and permissions repair. After the disk and permissions repair is complete, reboot the system and try to install again using either the online installer (get.adobe.com/flashplayer) or the offline installer, posted at the bottom of the Installation problems | Flash Player | Mac page in the ‘Still having problems’ section.
If these options do not work, I'd reach out to Apple support to see if they have a suggestion. If you do find a resolution to this, please let me know. I'll be happy to share it with people that encounter the problem in the future.

Download the Adobe Licensing Repair Tool.
Run the License Service Update.
Mac OS X 10.7 and above:
a. Double-click the LicenseRecovery111.dmg It will extract the folder. Open the folder.
b. Double-click your Hard Drive.
c. Double-click Applications.
d. Double-click Utilities.
e. Double-click Terminal.
f. Type sudo python
Note: There is a space following “python”. Do not press Return.
g. Drag LicenseRecover.py from the LicenseRecovery111 folder onto the Terminal Window and press Return.
It should look like this:
h. Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted and click OK.
(Note: the cursor will not move and you will not see stars or dots, just enter your password anyway.
i. Let the script run, it will tell you when it is finished. Quit terminal and restart Photoshop

Any outdated Mac Programs on MacBook Pro '09 that I can or should delete to save space?

There are some Mac Programs that came with my late 2009 MacBook Pro that I **think** are outdated / unsupported and I am wondering if I can or should delete them to free up critical space. (I use my MacBook Pro for genealogy files and kids' photos and videos so I often get a critically low on space issue -
like down to 25GB or less out of 250GB).
Some programs I have never really used, but I hate to delete anything that came with the Mac that I might one day have a use for or want if I was to sell it or
trade it, but I think some programs are no longer supported.
Among these that I have questions on are iWork '09, iWeb that I think may no longer be supported. (Never used them anyway really - I have pages and Numbers that may be part of iWork, but I also have the Mac version of Office installed). I have 2 different versions of Pages. I think the old version
(which I had created some documents in) was the old purplish ink jar icon and the newer one looks like a piece of paper with a pencil or pen icon.
I have created files in the old version, but not the new version. Can I safely delete the old icon / app without affecting those old files?
I never used the old version of Numbers or Keynote, so I already deleted the old icons for those.
Others that I am not sure if I need or what came originally with the Mac vs. downloaded later (like from the app store) include:
Apple Script, ArcSoft Connect Suite, Automator, Dashboard, Dictionary, DVD Player, iDVD, iMovie, PanoramaMaker, PhotoBooth, Tech Tool Deluxe,
the Unarchiver, VirusBarrier Express.
GarageBand came with, but I have never used it. Hate to delete it unless I really can't afford it.
To my knowledge, I have never used any of those except perhaps DVD Player or iDVD, whichever one can or does play a movie unless it will play a movie
without either of those.
If any of the above are critical or recommended to keep either for proper functioning in general or to do certain recommended things (like play a DVD and I must have one of the DVD / movie ones in particular), then I need to know that as well as what I can safely delete without either significant issue or
shooting myself in the foot.
I mean, a Dictionary would be nice to have in theory, but probably not at the sacrifice of space because I usually just Google a word for the definition anyway.
Unarchiver is apparently an unzipper, but not sure I have ever used it unless it was seamless and not obvious. Does Mac have some internal unzipper utility
that could be unzipping my files behind the scenes without my being aware of it.
By the same token, if there are any others that I would / should have on my computer that are known to be useless (GameCenter?), please advise as well.
These are the kinds of things I need to know as well as what some of these are / do.

Office 2008 upgrade install issues

Just installed the upgrade of Office 2008. I could not get the programs to work even though it loaded successfully. I finally called MS and they had me create a new identity on my mac and install the upgrade there. It works. My issue is how to merge the identities or merge the data from the old identity to the new identity? This is for iTunes, iPhoto, Entourage...everything.

This isn't an issue with Office and/or Windows compatibility but rather a question better suited for the OS X discussions since you'll be wanting migrate a user account.

Mac programs "quit unexpectedly"

Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Air I can no longer log into Safari, Mail, Apple Store, Notes, or update anything anymore.I always get whatever program "quit unexpectedly." It only seems to effect Mac programs. I have to use FireFox to get on line now (no issues).
Any thoughts? I'm currently running OS X 10.9 on a 2GHz i7 with 8 GB ram.

Hello, not your fault, but when you use Paste instead of Paste & Match style, this forum makes it really hard to read the log.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

Issue resolved with the help of Adobe Support (Mercer). My problem had been seen in another machine, there were empty folders in the Fonts Folder (Hard Drive>Library>Fonts) that the installer could not reconcile or delete, that was hanging up the Installer.
My fix was to delete the following empty folders from the Fonts Folder:
AdobeMingStd-Light.otf
BickhamScriptPro-Regular.otf
KozMinPro-Regular.otf
MyriadPro-BoldCond.otf
TektonPro-BoldCond.otf
And then re-run the installer (be sure to empty the trash).
My advice would be to first read the installer log and look for names of font folders that could not be resolved, then dump those. Another way would be to dump any empty folders in the Fonts Folder, empty the trash, then re-sun the installer.

MacProtector and all of it's ilk (it's appeared under several names) is a scam and is lying to you. There are no viruses on your system, only the MacProtector "scamware". If you search the forums or the web for "Mac Defender", you'll find a lot of information about this scam along with instructions on how to remove it. Do not, under any circumstances, provide the crooks who created this garbage with any personal information, particularly not any credit card.
I don't know why Norton Antivirus isn't catching this, but it may be that it will block installation of the scamware but not remove it once installed.

Firefox will not display, and It appears that there is an incompatible program installed.

How do I locate and remove incompatible programs that are preventing Firefox from displaying on my screen? I have the latest Firefox program installed, but I cannot get it onscreen. I ha ve removed Babylon, or at least I have performed the recommended steps to remove it and it no longer appears on my computer's list of installed programs. However, I still cannot retrieve Firefox on my screen. I am using Googlechrome instead as my browser but it doesn't match Firefox for ease and convenience.

hello ralph, does it work when you press the shift key while launching firefox in order to access firefox safemode - then you can do a reset to revert most of the settings to the factory default.

The first things I would try would be to press shift during start up, this will boot into safe mode.
I think you'll need to purchase a copy of Snow Leopard to re-install the OS.
There's another couple of suggestions here; http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417 where you can boot into single user mode and look at repairing disk permissions if that's the problem.
I would hope that if you could boot into safe mode or single user mode, then that may automatically rectify your current issue. If not, then I'm pretty certain that a fresh install will be the ultimate answer.
