Newbie:  type size

I'm doing a CD booklet for a 3 cd set for my own company.  Most of the type is 10 pt Baskerville.
But I have some pages just THICK with personnel (big bands, etc.).  I think I know the answer to this, but...
5 pt is too small to read, right?
(I've discovered that the screen display for "actual size" of the booklet 100% is smaller than the actual booklet:  Actual size is actually 136%.  At 136% the 5 pt doesn't show up on the screen.)
What's the minimal I can get away with, not for text, but for the solid page listing about 50 people (many of whom are deceased and won't mind)?

Actual size depends on monitor resolution. Your actual size is probably different from my actual size. 5 pt type may or may not show on your screen at a particular size. This depends on two things: your greeking setting in Preferences  (probably defaulted to greek text below 7 pt) and monitor resolution. The important thing to remember is that your CD booklet is not going to be viewed on your monitor. It's going to be viewed as a printed document. So when you make decisions about readability, print it on a good laser printer and judge that.
CD *labels* regularly have text on them at 6 pt, occasionally 5 pt. That doesn't mean it's comfortably readable, just that CD labels are really small and most people can strain to read 5 pt type with their glasses on (or without, if they don't need glasses). CD booklets are pretty small too, but you're not working with the same overall area constraint (you can make as many pages as you want).
If you want to keep it comfortably readable, stick with 7 pt or higher.

  • I used to be able to click on View to change type size. View is gone from Firefox4. How can I get it back?

When I downloaded the latest version of Firefox, I was told that it was not compatible with my Yahoo toolbar. I downloaded Firefox4 anyway. As a result I lost View on the toolbar, which allowed me to enlarge the type size of anything I saw on the screen. I very much appreciated that feature and would like to have it back. Is it hiding somewhere? How can I restore it--or find an equivalent function?

The Menu bar is hidden when the Firefox button is showing. Hit the '''Alt''' key to temporarily show the Menu bar, and then hit '''V''' to open the View menu.

  • How do you increase type size in menu bars and panels?

I recently abandoned my Mac Pro 1,1 for a shiny new Mac Pro cylinder running Mavericks 10.9.5. I have paired it with an LG 27" IPS display. The reason I am using the LG is because I was frustrated that Apple pays absolutely no attention to the pleas of their pro users for a non-reflective display.
And now I find that the type in the menu bars and panels is so small that it literally causes me eyestrain - and that I can't increase the type size. I am older (62), but I still need to use my Mac to survive. Unfortunately, though, it appears that Apple designers have again ignored the needs of their pro users -  in this case, older ones.
I have been a graphic designer and a producer of technical and marketing publications for over 35 years, and I appreciate good-looking design -  but the real measure of design is usability. Even great-looking design must be user friendly.
So now I am wondering if Apple interface designers are amateurs, or if they just don't give a @#$% about their users.
Did I miss it? Is their a way to increase type size in menu bars, etc.?

    Did I miss it?
    Yes.
    System preferences > Displays > Resolution ...
choose "Scaled" and pick an alternate resolution.
When you do this, text will be drawn as if your screen were actually set to that revolution, but graphics will be drawn full-scale at the native resolution.
This feature was invented for Retina Displays, and has finally been made available for additional displays.

  • Cannot change type size in CS6 IND

After installing by CS6 on my new macbook pro retina with OS X Yosemite, InDesign is not working the same. None of the keyboard commands do not work and I can't change the type size to any number I want, only to presets. What is happening?!

Did you migrate or copy your InDesign CS6 from an old computer? That will not work.
You have to use a CS6 installer for it to install properly. If you did that, you'll need to run the Adobe Cleaner tool to remove the migrated files.

  • Data type size for the view column

I am creating a view from base table using substr() for some fields. The data type size of the column in the view becomes twice the size of the corresponding column in the base table. Example
    SQL> create table temp_sat(name varchar2(20));
    Table created.
    SQL> create view temp_view as select substr(name,1,10) name from temp_sat;
    View created.
    SQL> desc temp_view
    Name Null? Type
    NAME VARCHAR2(40)
Can i specify the size of the column while creating view

  • I want to increase the type size permanently. I hit Control & +, but it always ges back to the smaller type when I'm done.

I'd like to know how to permanently increase the type size. I use the Control + to increase the size, but it always goes back to the original setting when I go on to something else.

    Every time Firefox opened

If you need to increase (or decrease) the font size on websites then look at:

  • Finder Window Type Size

I have a client who wants to increase the size of the type in Finder Windows.... NOT the icon type size on the desktop....
    is this possible?

This is a standard preference setting.
From the Finder, go to the View menu, then *Show View Options* or hit Apple-J
Each view type (Icon, List, Column) has a text size setting.
If this doesn't give you enough of a size-boost, you can choose any size you want with a little editing of preference lists: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080402181745803

  • How to reduce type size on exported copyright?

I have a pretty long name. Therefore, my copyright notice is quite long.
    eg. © Hibbard T. Smith, JR 2007
When I export a web sized (300 x 200) image, the copyright notice is so large that it gets chopped off. How can I reduce the type size used so the whole message makes it onto reasonably sized images?
Or, do I just have to start using larger images on my web sites?

Even better will be when adobe allows the use of TPI overlays with Copyrights just as you want it for use on export not just in Slideshows and Print. See 'Transparent PNG Items' on the Download page of
    LR Extras for more info!

  • Char types size greater than 256 in DOE

What is the standard to use characters with types size greater than 256 characters in DOE (bapiwrapper)?

Use STRING for length greater than 256 characters. In DOE, you should select TEXT_MEMO checkbox while defining node attribute in Data Object.

  • Type size in the upper menue

How can I increase the type size in the upper menue of photopshop under windows 8/8.1

If you running windows 8 on a new high dpi resolution Laptop or tablet you may need to see if there are updated versions of your application that have updated the user interface to work on high resolution displays. For example Adobe updated the Mac version of Photoshop for high resolution retina displays.  They are working on the PC version Photoshop however it not done.  If you scale up text size using windows desktop scaling font feature too large,  The text use in Photoshop user interface will not fit within the area Adobe allocated for the user interface areas.

However I am extending a system which stores dynamic SQL within an MDM column to facilitate a generic extract and load process. I am sure you are already aware in this type of scenario the business rules behind a piece of dynamic SQL defining a generic
extract process could easily exceed 4000 characters.
