Newbie: Veritas (VxVM 4.1) License question

Hello fellow Admins,
This is my first upgrade from using a DEMO license to a Perm. license on Veritas Volume Manager.
During an upgrade on one of our production systems we used a DEMO license to start and configure all Veritas Volumes on the new sever. Once everything was up and running we shutdown the old server and migrated the old 3.2 license to become a 4.1 license. I have successfully applied it now on my Solaris 10 server.
Now to my questions:
When i run 'vxlicrep' the systems displays both the Demo license and the new permanent license. I have ~10days left on the Demo license.
Can i remove the Demo license under /etc/vx/licenses/lic/*.vxlic or does the system automatically start using the Permanent License once the Demo has expired.
Is there a reboot needed to activate the perm lic?
Regards,
Pierre

Case closed.
I was sort of on the right track. After deleting the .vxlic file one has to init the daemon for the new license.
1, Delete or Move the license key file in /etc/vx/licenses/lic/*.vxlic
2, Then issue: vxdctl license init [enter]
vxdctl license init forces vxconfigd to rescan the licenses and make the new licenses available.
Regards,
Pierre

  • Lumira Server for BI Platform and Team/Edge consumption & licensing question

Hi.  I have a few questions.
    Question 1:
From my reading, I've heard that Lumira Edge/Team server may not be a part of BI-Suite License.  I read a Lumira Server ASUG Webcast recap by Tammy Powlas here (SAP Lumira Server for Teams Roadmap ASUG Webcast) over the weekend and one of the Q&A questions struck me:
Q: Is this included with the BI Suite license from SAP?
A: Lumira Server for Teams (Edge Edition) is not covered under BI Suite License. However, Lumira Server for BI Platform (RTC Planned in April) is covered under BI Suite licenses
In a separate conversation late 2014, I thought I'd heard that Lumira Team/Edge server was supposed to be usable by BI Suite licensed customers, but it sounds like I'm mistaken?
    Question 2:
Next, the second part of the statement gave me hope:
However, Lumira Server for BI Platform (RTC Planned in April) is covered under BI Suite licenses
I then looked at the Lumira Deployment Options for Departments Part 1 – ASUG Webcast by Tammy Powlas to get some more information on Lumira Server for BI Platform.  This slide gave me some hope (emphasis mine in green):
But then I see some more information a little later:
Is this slide to imply that the version without HANA (or HANA XS) for BI Platform will only really just serve as a user rights management and Lumira document repository?  And that if I want to view a Lumira document, I must still open from the Lumira Desktop client?
It was suggested I start a new discussion thread to ask this licensing question about a product that's not out yet (but the slide says it's GA so I'm still confused) so here I am with my discussion thread!
Hopefully someone can make me less confused.  I'm hoping the answer is as a BI-Suite customer that we do not have to make a decision to either invest in new Edge/Team licenses or buy HANA XS hardware to establish a beachhead of Lumira usage in our organization.  We've been struggling with promoting Lumira and the sharing piece has been the sore spot.

    Hi Michael
You are right, it is confusing...
I think it will be better to contact sales to get this explained as opposed to technical support people that monitor this SCN Space.

  • Instant Client SQL*Plus License Question

Can anyone shed some light on a license question for me? (I know that most license questions are for Oracle Sales to handle, but this involves a supposedly free product.)
I want to use SQL*Plus with the Instant Client in a production environment, but I am not sure whether I am entitled to. Does Instant Client "support" SQL*Plus only in the sense that if I already own a license for SQL*Plus I can use it with the Instant Client, or is the Instant Client SQL*Plus package also truly free to deploy and use?
The download page has links to download a basic Instant Client, plus several optional packages, one of which is SQL*Plus. However, the FAQ does not tell me whether the optional packages (specifically SQL*Plus) is also free to deploy and use in a production environment, and I could not find any other helpful document.
The FAQ says that "Instant Client is FREE for anyone to use in a development or production environment." It also says immediately following that "Instant Client can be used to run your OCI, OCCI, Pro*C, JDBC, and ODBC applications without installing a full Oracle Client. In addition, Instant Client supports SQL*Plus." [emphasis mine]
I would appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anthony

Why don't you call Oracle sales? I guess they'll be happy to answer your question.

  • CS5 Student License Question

    Licensing question:
In 2011, I purchased a student license to CS5 for my mac.  I have installed it on one laptop that I am the primary user of.  The laptop has two user logins, mine and my husbands.
Can my husband use CS5 on the computer on an occassional basis (either through my username or his) and still be okay from a licensing point of view?  There are several questions that hint at this, but I can't find a clear answer.  I've read the EULA, but I'm still confused whether this is permissable or not.
    Thanks for any help.

That's into the area of legal interpretation, but you don't need to overthink it. You may have purchased the license, but technically the activation is per computer, is it not? So one could simply assume that this is perfectly intended or at least within the freedom that the EULA provides... It's not like you're letting your neighbors use it for a buck an hour, or is it?

  • BO XIR2 Licensing Question

Was hoping if someone could help me out with a licensing question I have. I am trying to understand how BO licensing works.
I think it would be easier if I asked the question through an example.
The scenario is a situation where we have a standard BO XIR2 enterprise installation with an app server, db server and web server.
    1. The app server is a normal BO XIR2 installation
    2. The web server is also as from a BO XIR2 installation.
    3. The db server runs the data store and audit module is on in the db.
    4. The following report types are to be used by the end user
        4a. Crystal Reports
4b. Web Intelligent reports (View, drill down etc)
4c. Desktop Intelligence report (View, drill down etc)
    5. The development box is the same setup in which the 10 developers should have access to have access to these build the universes, crystal, webi and deski reports.
    6. The prod environment will be used by 50 users who should be able to access webi crystal and deski reports.
    7. These users should also be able to create custom webi reports
Since the licensing for BO is a bit different, can someone please help understand all the different types of licenses required for this setup?

BO licensing is pretty straight forward, but you should speak to a sales rep for particulars. Generally from the server we have 3 types CPU (in which case everything you stated would be supported), Named Users (in which case you would need 1 per user logging in) and concurrent users (which would require enough licenses to support the maximum of concurrently logged on users).
The slow response is likely due to the US thanksgiving holiday, I'm sure more folks will be back next week.

  • Licensing question for AD enterprise with new SQL Server

    Hi!
We have Server 2008 R2 STD where our AD is located and it has enough User CAL's. Additionally we have Terminal server with TS licenses.
Now we're purchasing a Server 2012 where we plan to install SQL Server 2012 STD where we will install our third party program and this program is going to be used through Terminal server.
Now the question is do I only need SQL CAL's or will I have to get both SQL CAL's AND User CAL's for the new server? I'm thinking AD servers User CAL's is enough for the whole enterprise, but I'm not 100% sure and need help with this!
    Thanks!

Licensing questions should be directed to trained Microsoft licensing specialists instead of a technical forum.
    www.microsoft.com/licensing.
That said, SQL CALs and operating system CALs are sold separately.  Talk with the vendor from whom you are purchasing your licenses.  They should be able to help you sort out the CAL questions.

  • OPSS API licensing question

    Hi product managers,
Is there a licensing restriction on use of OPSS API's with ADF essentials ? Will this API be included in the future ADF essentials build ? Will there be a separate licensing cost for this API in this case one might use the Apache LDAP API's.
I have seen the OPSS FAQ whitepaper but it said that post 11gr1 release they might offer it separately but the document is really old.
    Regards,
    Ramandeep Nanda

    Hi Ramandeep,
Licensing questions are best answered directly by the Oracle Sales team - the answer could depend on the products that your company already have licensed, and how they are bundled etc.

  • Storsimple design/licensing questions

    Hello all,
I have read the online docs, but I still have some questions:
    1. How does the pricing for the Storsimple actually works? What I understand from the website that you actually get it for free but you need to purchase a 2 year licence of 50 or 100 TB?
    2. The Virtual Device is probably not included in the license? Meaning that I would actually pay for a normal Azure vm with the included storage in order to have this Virtual Device?
    3. Question 3 actually could cause me to pay double for the storage? The storage for the Storsimple and the same storage that is located in azure for the Virtual Device?
    4. Deduplication works on a per container basis or on per a whole device?
    5. Is the storage that is written to Azure also stored in a deduplicated form in Azure. The Virtual Device and the azure storage for the physical storesimple.
    6. In what ways can I used as a backup target? I think only as a LUN presented to a backup server right? I am aware of the backup possibilities, but I do not have the data stored on the Storesimple itself.
    7. It does not look as if I can scale a Storesimple out. So if I am growing over the years then it could be that the performance will drop because it needs to retrieve more and more from azure?
    Thanks!

You should discuss all licensing questions with your Account Executive. They can explain all of your options to you.

  • Licensing question. Buying older components of OS X.

Licensing question. Buying older components of OS X.
My first question is where might I find an older version of imovie?
If you purchase OS 10.4 Tiger, are you entitled to download an earlier version of imovie such as imovie2, imovie 3 or imovie4 for no cost? Or must I also purchase iLife05 in order to instal any version of imovie? The reason I ask is that I remember that OS 10.1.5 use to have imovie included. Now imovie seems to be part of iLife which is a separate software package to purchase.
How and where might I find an earlier version of imovie? I ask this in terms of older computers that may run the older versions of imovie better than imovieHD.
Here is why I was asking:
I once spoke with someone at Apple who explained to me that if you purchase an OS from Apple, you are entitled to the software from earlier OSes. If I remember correctly, the example we were discussing was in terms of fonts. I must be certain to indicate that this is how I perceived the licensing issue and I could be incorrect in my understanding:
"If a user purchases an operating system from Apple, they are entitled to install any software from previous releases of the Operating system." For example, if a user purchases a second computer such as a portable computer, and then purchases mac os 10 for that computer, he or she may legally install any fonts that may have been bundled with any earlier Apple Operating Systems such as the fonts that came bundled with OS 8.5.
On Apple's web site is an area where one may download old software (old os systems) for free. These bundled fonts may be installed on as many computers as one would like because Apple offers them for free. You most likely would need to have purchased at least one of Apple's Operating Systems to be able to legally use the software from any earlier versions of your Operating System.
And so I would like to ask if this could be also considered in terms of OSX. If I buy Tiger, am I legally entitled to Panther on that same computer? This may be helpful for someone who would like to use Tiger as well as some older components of Panther. Maybe for some reason ical version 1.5 (in Panther) might be prefered over ical version 2.0 (in Tiger) due to some computer compatibility issue. Whether this is practical or not I am just outlining a theoretical example to help understand the specifics of Apple OS licensing.
And so I would like to ask this question in terms of imovie. How might I purchase an older version of imovie? May I purchase Tiger and then find an OEM version of Panther which I would then be legally entitled to install on that same computer? Or is there a place on the Apple website where users of Tiger are able to download older components from older OSX versions?
Or must I purchase the retail versions of both Tiger and Panther?
    Thank you for any clarification,

Thank you Allan and Dakota for jumping into this issue.
Allan, you have been very helpful with your comments and I think you have answered the question which is "no" (unfortunately). To summarize then, if you purchase an OS, you are not entitled to the components of an earlier OS - unless Apple makes it available free on their website. For example, if you purchase Tiger, you are not entitled to any components of Panther or Jaguar - even the older imovie that came with 10.1.5. It would be nice if Apple jumped into the discussion here to confirm this, however I am sure that is what they would say. Unless I hear otherwise I will assume this is also Apple's stance - that if you purchase an OS 9 (or application), you are not entitled to the components of an earlier OS (or application).
Dakota raises a good point also. However, unfortunately I see a small legal technical flaw with Dakota's procedure. Apple licences software per computer rather than per user. (I believe Adobe's licencing policy is the other way around - which I prefer.) And so technically iMovie 3.0.3 is only licensed to the Powerbook and cannot legally be copied to the iMac even if the iMac is running the latest version of iLife (and Tiger). You see, that was one of the key issues in this original post.
Personally I wish Apple would lessen the restriction on this policy with a clause in the licencing agreement allowing use of some earlier versions of applications (or OS components) to be used - especially the iLife components such as iMovie or iPhoto.
Licencing per user rather than per computer seems to be a little more practical for users in terms of promoting people to adopt the digital lifestyle considering many people have a workstation at home and also carry a portable on the road - well a little less costly anyways for the user. It would be nice if we were able to legally copy certain components across devices but that doesn't seem to be the case today with Apple. Perhaps Apple's licencing policy could be a hybrid model and follow some aspects of Adobe's licencing model. Here's an idea: allow users to pay for a "sub" licence for older apps. Everyone would benefit. Apple would earn more income from us and we would legally be able to use more Apple software on more devices. Just a few thoughts to share.

  • Does solaris cluster 3.3 need  to install veritas vxvm software?

    hello buddy
I read the document for solaris cluster 3.3 , and see it need to install veritas vxvm.
why need veritas vxvm if I have solaris cluster ?
    Thanks

You need to use either Solaris Volume Manager, or Veritas Volume Manager. With clustering you need a disk manager that is cluster aware, iow, it needs to know that one disk can be accessed by more than one server at a time.
Have a look at chapter 3 in the Cluster installation manual for the steps to use Solaris Volume Manager. It's iportant to use the /dev/did disk names

  • WS2012R2 Licensing Question - 95% confident of my understanding, but would appreciate confirmation

After a huge amount of research, I THINK I understand how WS2012R2 licensing works.
Since we’re a new business, we’re keeping things pretty simple for the time being.  I would appreciate some confirmation that my understanding of licensing makes sense though.
I first describe our architecture, then the four options, and then my understanding of the four options.
Many many thanks in advance; this forum has been incredibly helpful as I get started with these issues.
    Machine 1 @ Site 1:
OS: WS2012R2 (operating at hypervisor only)
VM1: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop session host)
VM2: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop connection broker and remote desktop licensing server)
    Machine 2 @ Site 1:
OS: WS2012R2 (operating as hypervisor only)
VM1: WS2012R2 (operating as server for electronic medical record software)
VM2: WS2012R2 (operating as domain controller, DNS server, and DHCP server)
    Machine 3 @ Site 1:
OS:  WS2012R2 or HVS2012R2 (operating as hypervisor only)
Machine1-VM1: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine1-VM2: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine2-VM1: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine2-VM2: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
    Machine 4 @ Site 2:
OS: WS2012R2 (operating at hypervisor only)
VM1: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop session host for remote users)
VM2: WS2012R2 (operating as remote desktop web access and remote desktop gateway)
    Machine 5 @ Site 2:
OS:  WS2012R2 or HVS2012R2 (operating as hypervisor only)
Machine4-VM1: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
Machine4-VM2: replicated here using Hyper-V Replica; not running.
We've identified the following four options:
    Option 1:
    Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard OEM Edition
    Backup Machines 3 and 5 = HVS2012R2 Edition
    Option 2:
Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard Open License Edition
    Backup Machines 3 and 5 = HVS2012R2 Edition
    Option 3:
    Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard OEM Edition
Backup Machines 3 and 5 = WS2012R2 Standard OEM Edition
    Option 4:
Primary Machines 1, 2,4 = WS2012R2 Standard Open License Edition
Backup Machines 3 and 5 = WS2012R2 Standard Open License Edition
    My understanding is as follows:
Option 1 is flawed because we would not be able to boot up the VMs on machines 3 and 5.  This is because a standard OEM edition license cannot be transferred, and so in the event of hardware failure, the license stays with the primary machine and cannot
be moved to the backup machine.
Option 2 is somewhat flawed due to the 90 day limit on transferring licenses.  For example, say Machine 1 fails, and I transfer the VMs and the license to Machine 3.   That step is permitted, however, I cannot reverse this transfer for 90 days
which is obviously suboptimal since Machine 3 is intended to be a temporary backup machine.
Option 3 is sufficient for my needs, subject to the only caveat that I understand that these OEM licenses are "locked" to the physical machine and cannot be transferred to another physical machine.   There are NO other limitations (e.g. I
would be able to legally and practically migrate a VM from Machine 1 to Machine 3 without worrying about activation issues, etc...)
Option 4 is sufficient for my needs, and would be the most flexible as the licenses could be moved if necessary down the road.

As has been stated many times in this forum, it is best to talk to a trained Microsoft licensing specialist about licensing questions.  Remember that a license is a legal contract between you and Microsoft, and using a forum for legal advice is a tad
risky.  Free advice is worth every penny.  www.microsoft.com/licensing.
That said, non-OEM licenses will always give you the most flexibility.  Secondly, you can get a volume license discount with as few as five copies of software, so you might want to investigate that.  Volume contracts provide additional benefits
outside of the what you get with the licenses.  Lastly, ensure that you have enough licenses to host the maximum number of VMs that will ever be running on a given host.  Hint, you mention Standard on a host that is a replica for four VMs.
If all four of those VMs are running, you would need a minimum of two Standard licenses assigned to that host.

  • Veritas VxVM demo license expired

    Hi,
Anyone knows or tested what will happen when VxVM license demo expired? And what happen if the server was rebooted with rootdisk under vxvm control.
    Thanks for your help.

    There is a few options.
    Dun reboot.
try set system clock backwards to before license expired may "fool the license" but not sure how it will affact your data.
Last old trick: use hid2(if you can still find it) the vm license if I'm not wrong should be tied system hostid, if you have another box with valid permanent vm license, you can first try to change the system hostid to the system hostid which is using the permanent vm license and use the vm license
example of the old way we did it was:
System A uses 84b0231b (uses perm vm license)
System B uses 84b0231c ( uses temp vm license)
on system B edit your /etc/rc1.d S10* files
add the following entry at the last line
hid2 84b0231b (so that every reboot it will mask itself)
reboot system then try to apply the perm vm license from system A, shud work.

  • Newbie volume license questions

If I understand correctly, I can purchase a volume license for Acrobat Pro and install the software on the server for multiple users.  There would be one license for Mac users and one for Windows users.
    Questions:
Can I VPN into the server and use the software?
Are licensed users computer specific?  As a licensed/authorized user, does it matter whether I log in from my desktop or my laptop, or would I need a license for both computers?
As the administrator, is there a way I can monitor individual users for such items as log in/log out times, time actively used, actions performed?
What is the upgrade to the next version policy?
    Thanks!

You can start with the ETK, and look up Citrix in the Admin Guide. There's a link to the usage policy there. You may need to be talking to someone in sales who can take the time to answer all your usage questions.

  • CS 5.5 Design Premium - Licensing Question and a Few Others

I am considering getting this product (CS 5.5 Design Premium) but I have a few questions:
    1) Does the licensing agreement allow an installation on a Desktop and a Laptop?  By that I mean, I work on two different computer that I own and wonder if I must buy a license for each or if one purchase will allow installation and use on both (only by me however. i.e. one at a time).
    2) If it does allow installation on each, can this be done with one registration or do I need to jump through a bunch of hoops to get both licensed?
    3) I'm still trying to decide if this is the best choice for a product.  What I need are: photo editing, video editing, flash creation.  And perhaps designs that can be optimized for the iPad.  Would this be the best option for these three tasks?
    4) Regarding movies, I would like to be able to save an edited movie in other than flash format (i.e. mov or MPEG).  Does this CS allow movie creation and editing, other than flash?  Does that change the answer to #3?
    5) I see in the description of this product that it can create for the iPad and iPhone.  ex: "And now, bring your rich designs to life on smartphones and tablets, including the iPad".  But the iPad doesn't support flash (swf).  What does this mean, when it says supports designs including the iPad?  What kind of designs can be done for the iPad?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    AIR
So if I selected the AIR app pachage when I create a new project, I can develop an adobe application that will work on the iPad?  Sorry to be such a newbie on this.   I don't invision anything too complicated but I would like to be able to make some interactive aimated models that can be run on an iPad.
    Movies
Movies are less important, as I have other tools for that.  I was just wondering if it could.  These CSs are a bit expensive.  I don't want to buy too much  I need but I would like it even less if I bought less than I need.
Oh! And is an internet connection always required to use CS?  There are times when I need to work on my computer when I don't have an internet connection, like when taveling internationally.  Will I still be able to work in CS, without an internet connection?

can any one tell what will be the problem in accessing tru VEA GUI .
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
    A few questions:
    1. Do you have this problem only for one machine and not for other machines in your set of 8 servers?
    2. Does this machine have any volumes/DGs? :D
    3. Are you able to access those volumes/DGs using the VxVM command line ?
    4. Could you post a snapshot of the GUI and the registry and the vxisis.log ?
registry can be found in /etc/vx/isis/Registry and log in /var/vx/isis/vxisis.log ?
And like I said before, best place to get your problem solved is the Veritas Tech Support.
