Newbie wants to learn Flash

i want to learn flash. I have a very simple idea, but i need
to start somewhere. I didn't get anything with my software. Where
can I go to see a tutorial on Flash. I found some, but they go into
all the cool things, and I need to learn the very basics, like
size, fading, etc.
thank you!

Flash comes with numerous excellent tutorials for beginners.
Check the Help menu. If they didn't come with your software, it
seems that perhaps you don't have a legal version of Flash?

  • Oc4j newbie wanting to learn

    Hi
    I am a newbie to oc4j
Is there some place where i can find the sequence of steps by which the different parameters are setup/accessed and used oc4j
I would like to know the sequence (and the order of execution) of steps in which different parameters are picked up from different xml configuration files by the OC4j/Forms/OAFM services
something on the lines of the opmctl is started and within that it picks up the value1 for parameter1 from file1 and uses that information for....kind of thing
Please do let me know if that is a bit too much to be asking
    Thanks
    Cyril

You should be able to specify your default printer via System Preferences -> Print & Scan (at least that is what is currently called under Lion).
    There is also:
    man lpadmin
    man lpoptions
You can also set the PRINTER environment variable to specify your default
You can access your CUPS server via <http://localhost:631/help>
And finally if you want to get your hands really dirty, you can edit /etc/cups/printers.conf (must use sudo, and of course you could mess up your printer setup)

  • Newbie wants to learn JCA

I would like to learn the JCA, however, most of the tutorials and examples that
I've found show you how to use and deploy resource adapters.
Can someone point me to the simplest example of a resource adapter? I would like
to kiss it and avoid cci. I am particularly interested in learning how to implement
              the ManagedConnectionFactory and ManagedConnection interfaces.
              Thank you!

Thw way I learned is, first read the JCA specs, understand the flow of
information and then look at the DBMS adapter that comes along with weblogic
integration on how those interfaces are implemented.
              Thanks

Where can I get good beginner tutorials for using flash?
    Thanks

Flash has built in tutorials that will help you. Press F1,
    and then Flash Tutorials.
There are also sites that can help you in more specific
    things. For example:

  • Newbie wants to learn servlets + intermedia

I'd like to use Intermedia in our web content management tool, and I'm trying to learn servlet-based image management and meta-data searching as quickly as possible.
Outside of the standard documentation, what resources would be the best to help me minimize the learning curve?
    thanks for your help...

One thing I would do is look at the samples, especially:

  • For all the newbies who wants to learn Java

I was a newbie like 4 months ago. i have some skills of OOP in C++ like 2 years back but since then i did'nt took any of programming language courses. I have experience in MSaccess and MYsql. i did my internship Last summer with Tennessee Education Lottery as a Database Analyst. At that time i realized what a Corporate Enviorment looks like. Trust me it was a formal interview and i passed it and they placed me in the IT department to write some scripts for the GUI terminal and at the same time create a Company Security Database. i did completed my project but i had to Learn Mysql. and then i realized Java was getting very popular. alot of people told me in the forums to go Java tutorial but i will not agree to start from the sun tutorial. you can do it only if you have a good or may be medium experience of OOP. it was really tough for me and then this magic guy came on the forum and told me to go on this website if you want to learn Java.
    http://chortle.ccsu.edu/java5/cs151java.html
This site is a brilliant site specially the exercise problems and the quizes really attracted me to Java alot and now i came to realize how easy it is to program in Java rather than C++. Java forums have helped me alot in solving those exercise problems (not with the code but with a good explanation) which was very helpful for me. out of my 210 post i guess i have helped 30 people out and the rest of the questions are regarding those exercises. i came to know encapsulation, inheritance and all that stuff. though i am still not very perfect like i am still having trouble with ComparTo thing but it takes more practice. the more you practice the more you learn. so all the newbies if you really want to learn java even if you dont have any experience in OOp this is the site where you need to start. Hope this will definitely help you alot. thanks to all the Senior members navycoder, captain, paulcw, duffy, turingpest and others also who have helped me in the past. without you i would have not achieved the goal of learning java. now my next step is going to be learn GUI programming Swing. looks fun to me. but at the same time i have my final project for this semester to make on ONline Testing program which will have a database, php scripting and html and xml.
I will post if i have any problems

  • I want to learn to design using Flash

I have visited many Flash template sites and want to learn
how to create sites like I see there. I have purchased many books
and even some tutorial CDs and DVDs. However, they don't teach how
to do really creative sites. They teach simple boring basics. How
do I learn to make really cool sites that look beyond complex? Are
there books or visual tutorials that are available?

There's a general rule in art and design: You have to learn
the rules before you can break them.
In other words, you need to learn the
boring basics or else you will never be able to design cool,
creative sites. Simple as that. It's like saying you want to learn
how to compose a symphony but don't want to be bothered learning
how to read music or learn music theory.
With Flash, the great thing is, the more of the boring basics
you learn, the more that you'll be tempted to experiment and play
around, and the creativity in you will be unleashed. At the same
time just look at other sites that you like. The more you learn
about Flash, the more you'll be able to figure out how it's done.
You'll then be able to understand the lessons in advanced Flash
training books and tutorials, which will enhance your
    skills.

  • I want to learn how to use ActionScript

    Where Am I With Flash?
I have adobe Flash CS3 Professional.
I have looked at the tutorials from the 'getting started'
section of the Video Workshop DVD and understood them.
I can do simple things like shape tweening, adding butons
    ect...
I would like to be able to start adding script to my projects
    (ActionScript 3)
I have almoast never programed before and certanly never
    programed with ActionScript
I have an ambition to become a good ActionScript Programer so
I can add interactive flash into websitess
    What Do I Want?
To start with, I need to know how everything is set up within
ActionScript 3 (what are variables and constants? How do you
constuct an If statment? What imported events do what? ect...)
I want to learn the above from a book (so I do not have to be
at my computer to learn). It would be nice if the book came with a
tutorial disk but this is not essential.
I have looked at the book from the following URL -
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flash-ActionScript-Dummies-Doug-Sahlin/dp/0764508318/ref=pd_bbs_6? ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1204548401&sr=8-6
However, I'm not sure if this book is for programing in
ActionScipt version 3 or another version (or for that matter
weather the fact that it is for version 1,2 or 3 matters at all).
    One More Thing
Also I would like to know some usefull websites that could
help me besides the video workshop (which I have looked at).
    Thank You
    Ziggy

    Hi Ziggy,
I suggest you take a look at "Learning ActionScript 3.0: A
    Beginner's
Guide", by Rich Shupe and Zevan Rosser.
It will give you great foundation and can help you build your
    skills
    from ground up.
I have just barely read a few pages, so I'm basing myself on
    reviews
from friends who are beginning into AS3.
Furthermore, once you've got a good grasp on the basics, I
    think one of
the most important part will be improving your skills on
    object oriented
programming. There's no better way for that than learning it
    with your
favorite language (and AS3 is perfect for that).
I strongly suggest at that point, that you acquire Colin
    Moock's
    "Essential Actionscript 3" from O'Reilly's. It's a difficult
    book but
don't get discouraged, and keep on reading and re-reading the
    chapters
and studying the examples until you finally get it.
It will help get your feet into OOP, necessary if you are
    serious in
AS3, and I can guarantee you although you might feel
    disturbed for not
understanding everything right away, it is only because it
    covers the
topics very thoroughly, and you'll end up understanding many
    important
concepts by re-reading it over the months/years of your
    practice.
That book is a bible (like all previous from the author)...
    once you get
to an intermediate level, you'll most likely rarely read any
    other
(except for very specific topics it doesn't cover), and you
    will often
refer to the AS help to know all of the classes and functions
    you'll
come to need, since you'll be fully able to understand them.
    Good luck!

  • Want to learn Ant.

    Hello everyone,
I want to learn Ant. Does anyone know where can I find some online tutorials for a newbie of Ant?
    Thanks in advance,
    George

    Thanks filestream,
I agree with duffy. The way I learned ANT was by
playing with the build.xml file and creating my own
simple xml files.I agree with you two, :-).
Try googling ANT Tutorial +Ashley J.S Mills.I have got this one. It is very helpful to a newbie, like me, :-).
There's also a small pdf out there (about 11 pages)
that has some basic explanations (I don't know who
wrote it.).I am very interested in this one you mentioned. Can you tell me how can I find it through Google? Which search key words should I use?
    regards,

  • Newbie asks about embeding flash video in simple HTML

Big newbie here.  Appreciate any help.  Just point me to an appropriate forum.
I was using DivX but, I wanted to try Flash.
I am NOT using any formal publishing software - just simple HTML  I'm using <object> and <embed> tags to display a flash video.
Everything seems OK but, I want controls (play, pause, volume, etc) for the player and I want to display an image when the video isn't playing.
This stuff is common on other web sites so I know it's possible.  But, I can't seem to do this with parameters.  What am I missing?
    Thanks!!!
    <OBJECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"
    WIDTH="640" HEIGHT="480" id="myMovieName">
    <PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="myMovie.swf">
    <PARAM NAME=play VALUE="false">
    <PARAM NAME=loop VALUE="false">
    <PARAM NAME=quality VALUE=high>
    <PARAM NAME=bgcolor VALUE=#FFFFFF>
    <EMBED href="myMovie.swf"

    </EMBED>
    </OBJECT>

My mistake, double quotas were like this: ”, ″
instead of this: " the code bellow in corrected:
    <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash"
    data="--url--" width="400" height="326">
    <param name="movie" value="--url--" /><param
    name="FlashVars" value=”playerMode=embedded" />
    </object>

  • Should I learn flash?

I'm in the first year of my degree and don't really have to spend much time studying because I've done most of it before. We learn the basics of HTML, CSS, Javascript, Flash, Photoshop etc but it's not specific enough to get a decent job with.
I want to focus my attention (and money) on learning one main thing and mastering it but aren't sure which to go for. I like using flash and love all of it's capabilites but also realise how important it could be to maybe master photoshop and look at digital art type stuff.
Or maybe learn CSS or something like that.
I want to maybe go in to website design, but am also interested in many other things. I mean, even if I do go in to web design, should I learn flash or should I focus my attention on photoshop and HTML?
I'm not really an arty type, I don't want to just be a programmer I want to at least do some design.
I want to look at how easy things are to learn, how fun it would be, if it would be useful in a few years and also the demand for it.
    Thoughts?
    Cheers!!

It really depends on what you want to do mainly when you start your career.
Personally, I wanted to learn everything to be as valuable as possible in not only a corporate setting, but also personal projects.
I attended Art Institute for Web Development and took classes on all the most popular platforms and applications. The list includes...
    XHTML/CSS
    Photoshop
    Flash
    Dreamweaver
    AS 3.0
    PHP/MySQL
On top of that, we learned about things like Color Theory, Design Theory and other Web Dev concepts.
In the grand scheme of things though, what I learned in school is only a fraction of what I've learned once I graduated and started working. I continue to learn things everyday, it is pretty much endless.
So getting to your question about Flash...
I think it is a valuable skill set to have. I wouldn't stop at Flash though. You still need basic knowledge, if not, advanced knowledge of XHTML/CSS and PHP/MySQL because your Flash projects will most likely require those technologies to implement in real world applications.
It's a crazy journey to say the least and every day, things get crazier with technology evolving so quickly.
The topics I outlined above are things you want to have a strong foundation in.
From there you can really focus on what type of work you want to do. I pretty much do a little bit of everything but like you are wondering, it does limit how far you can master one particular thing. But with time, I believe you can master most if not all of the topics.
    Hope that helps.
    Dey

  • Learning  Flash  AND swing

    hi.....do u think Flash > Applet AND VB.NET> Swing ?
I have little knowledge on Applet AND Swing......but I think Flash and VB.Net has exceeded and captured the market of Applet and Swing . Now a days most sites are using Flash for interactivity and VB for interface. do u think learning Flash and VB.NET would be worthy ? or should i update my knowledge on Applet and Swing ? One more bad thing regarding swing is , the code becomes bulky to get a simple interface .
i have one more doubt,......suppose i made a interface in VB.NET ( front end ) , can i run java code in back end ?
plz let me know what should i emphasis ?
    thanks

It all depends on your current situation. Are you employed in IT? If so, what technologies is your employer using now. What technologies do they see themselves using next year? In 5 years?
What skills do you have now? Are you proficient in any technologies? Think about whether you want to be a jack-of-all-trades or very proficient in a smaller number of technologies. Are your current skills saleable to an employer? Should you improve your current skills or start learning new skills?
Hey, for a forum answer, I've certainly typed a lot of question marks!

  • Any Great newbie books to learn java - Any Recommendations ???

Hi, my name is Chris and I know a little about web design and I want to learn java but I know nothing about programming and I would like anyone here to recommend a decend book for a complete newbie in programming to be about to get alot of a that book. I am really interested in java right now and if anyone has any great forums to learn also besides this one , that will be great.
    Thanks
    Chris :-)

http://chortle.ccsu.edu/java5/cs151java.html#50As always i wouldn't suggest this website you have mentioned. The order in which the topics are covered is not conducive to good learning. You see the chapter in exceptions is dealt at the end!
I would suggest Thinking In Java.
