Newbie - WebIntegrator Issues

I am in the process of finishing the tutorial for the WEb Integrator Developer for 9is and would enjoy some feeback regarding any issues with performance and/or WIDL problems.
The product that I'm currently evalutating (not 9i) for data aggregation is having trouble with dynamic form submittals and training of web pages that contain javascript inside the body tags. It also has trouble with frame based pages.
Please forward me any and all related guidance.

In short, I would like information about the abilities and/or shortcomings of WebIntegrator and Service Designer. I know what's in the documentation and what the salesguy told me, but would rather hear it from someone who has actually implemented it.
In the end, my intention is to aquire data from another source, especially web content, and repurpose it for wireless applications.
So what do you know?

Newbie Technical Issues

Hi, guys.
I just signed up a few minutes ago and I am the proud owner of an 8320 Curve, my very first Blackberry. Being new to all this, I have run in to some technical difficulties and I hope you experts can help me.
1. I downloaded a third party application (a currency trading software called Dealbook Mobile provided by gftforex.com) and successfully installed it on to my unit. The problem is, i keep getting a login failure that says "Remote Computer Error". I had been trying to fix this with their Live Help chat and everything seems to have been installed correctly including APN settings and version upgrades. Has anyone here had any experience with this application before?
* Two weeks ago, I installed the Windows Mobile version of this same software on to my Samsung SGH-i780 and it worked perfectly. I switched to Blackberry so that I could also have Bloomberg installed (it won't work on Windows Mobile), but the Blackberry version of Dealbook doesn't seem to work for some reason.
2. Another thing I noticed is that only the phone number appears when i receive incoming calls, even if the caller's mobile phone number is already in my Blackberry address book. Is there a solution for this, or this the way it really works?
3. Is there a way to synchronize the 8320 with both the Samsung SGH-i780 and the MacBook Pro? With regard to the Samsung, it is already paired with the 8320, but I am unable to beam any contact numbers in to the Blackberry. Anyone got any tips on how to fix this?

The ever popular newbie EQ issue

Hi all... as an experienced musician who's been dabbling in the DAW world for about a year I thought I'd share my EQ learning experience with my fellow newbies (pros, feel free to laugh! I can take it.)
Anyway, I spent many months rendering my brilliant noodlings into absolute mud through complete lack of knowledge of what all them knobs and waves meant But now I;m now getting tracks that to my ears (and people other than my mom) sounds pretty good -- sounds the way I want it -- and getting mixes that sound fairly clear, at least not totally chaotic and muddy.
As Bee Jay pointed out earlier, there is no "right" set of EQ settings that will work for every song (unless you can afford the Awesomizer!). But there's general frequency bands in which instruments (and I'm thinking of basic rock and roll instrumentation, eg Zeppelin, Sabbath, loud English-American blues) live the best, those are the bands where to begin EQing the signal.
"The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" breaks out this info pretty well, I think. It also includes helpful interviews with a lot of well-known pros, and describes how they build their mixes. The book also describes places to cut and boost for each instrument that tend to have worked in the past -- and explains why those tried and true methods work. it helps one understand why the Logic presets are the way they are. I'll use those bands as a starting point, then tweak from there, depending on the composition.
As for doing the actual EQing, I can't praise PSP Audio's MasterQ highly enough. It's a parametric EQ with a great interface (knobs for freg/Q/gain) and a nice big graphical display. What I will do, when EQing kick/snare/bass is have each channel's MasterQ instance simultaneously on my screen to ensure they're not crowding each other out. (Also highly recommend PSP's MixPressor and Vintage Warmer, and their Neon Linear Phase EQ!)
So it's not totally mysterious... you just have to arm yourself with a bit of theory and get a EQ that functions and communicates in a way that's good for you. And futzing around, a lot.

I find the best tool in this respect is the analyser, plus your ears of course.

Bizarre Sound Distortion on Export - Not Newbie Compression issue

I'm trying out the Flash CS3 demo - OSX. (Using OSX 10.4.10.)
I've got a slightly complicated timeline with about 8 layers
and some things alpha fading in and out, and a bunch of sound
samples being used as timeline sound effects (forget the term, but
attached to frames not streaming). No scripting.
The sounds are mostly too long for the amount of time
allotted to them in the timeline, and cut previous sounds off. I'm
speculating this might be a possible issue. That is, I have say a 5
second sound, which has only 3 seconds of time to play, before
another sound interrupts it in the same timeline layer.
There are two separate layers of sound playing at the same
time.
All the original sounds are imported into the movie as
44.1/16bit AIFFs. They are mono files (might be another possible
issue).
I'm trying to export with quality of 128k MP3. I've been
trying different variations:
- setting the compression for the audio files in the
Library/setting movie export settings to use Library settings
- setting audio files in the Library to use "default
compression", and specifying the correct 128k MP3 setting in the
export settings
- or both of these (set individually in library, then
overridden in export settings).
I've tried with and without the "use mono" setting (both in
Library files and export settings). (This is a question for me:
what should be the correct setting for that when the original file
already is mono?)
Sometimes everything's great. I test or export the movie and
the sound is fine.
Other times I test or export the movie -- with exactly the
same audio settings as the last time when it worked -- and now get
unbearably hideous hissing/cracking instead of the correct sound.
Most dangerously -- I think but haven't quite convinced
myself -- the same flash export file may sometimes play fine, and
sometimes play with the distortion. So I'm not sure if this is an
export issue, Flash player issue, or combination of export doing
something semi-weird that the player only sometimes chokes on. A
"bad" export is distorted both in the desktop Flash player that
comes with the Flash demo, and in a browser with Flash plugin 9 r45
(OSX).
GUH!
And this is the $800 product which is little more than a
basic text editor for scripting and an animation timeline that
hasn't gotten updated functionality since 1999.

Is this intended? You are having an issue with 5 second
sounds being cut off after 3 seconds...why
not place them on different layers to avoid this? I don't
understand the workflow here.

containing sounds that cut each other off?

Mono shouldn't matter - but the quality of the original will
matter - specifically the levels, if
the overall level is originally too high (or "hot"), then
clipping will occur once compressed from
Flash (in some cases).

You may take exception to this but it sounds very much like
user error or something beyond Flash
(like an issue with the source audio files). Your opinion is
subjective but AS3, Flash, Flex is
hardly "little more than a text editor". True the timeline
hasn't changed much over the years but
funny that it is still the king when it comes to animation
across so many mediums - why fix what
ain't broken and works so very well for so many worldwide?

Mobile Account Newbie, Small issue

Hi all,
Apologies if this isn't the right place to post this but i'll explain a little about my issue. If there is somewhere better i should post these style issues please advise.
I have several iMac's in an Active Directory Environment with mobile accounts, i set this up myself
now my problem is my home folder for the mac's is shared with my Active Directory Home Folder. This basically means that my windows desktop has all the things on my mac desktop and vice versa.
When i log into a windows box all is well, when i log into a mac box i get two annoying windows files that i know i shouldn't delete but want to so bad, is there a way i can make them hidden, or another way of setting it up so they don't appear
the two files are desktop.ini and the folder $RECYCLE.BIN
i am a complete novice, i know when i was at uni they didn't appear, i also don't have an osx server (wish i did) and i know uni did, maybe thats the prob
anyway thats enough of me rambling, any help greatly appreciated

Have you tried using the SetFile terminal command?
You may have to install the Dev tools on a box, and pull it out from the /bin directory (I think), and copy it to your /bin directory
SetFile -a V <filefullpath>
Should do the trick (Set file "attribute" "Visible") toggles it on and off in the finder view, but doesn't get rid of it.

AirPort/Mac newbie range issue

I'm so new to Macs that my new MacBook hasn't even turned up yet! However, I thought I'd go out and purchase the Airport Extreme in preparation but am experiencing A LOT of problems in configuring it with my existing PCs.
I'm fairly clued up into this sort of thing but this just don't seem right and I'd appreciate your thoughts.
My main issue is to do with range. The extreme boasts wireless N but the range I'm currently experiencing is a lot LESS than my standard issue BT Internet wirless G router!
Even my PC laptop (with a wireless B card)is only showing a signal stregnth of 2 out 5 bars when less than a metre away from the AirPort! Surly this is wrong??!
My wireless G PC desktop (situated about 20 metres away from the AirPort) happily pics up my neighbours wifi signals (from way up the road) but can't see the Airport at all!
Does the AirPort need returning or am I overlooking something stupid!

I agree with you - surely this is wrong. Now keep in mind that even though this is an n-capable wireless router, its range for b/g connections won't be much better than what you got with your BT-supplied b/g wireless router. If you are finding the range is significantly worse, I would begin to suspect you either (a) have a poorly performing brand-new base station or (b) you were getting exceptionally good performance from your previous wireless router.

Newbie having issues with .svg

I'm new to Illustrator, but a seasoned pro with Photoshop and Adobe's video production software.
I was just given an svg file containing layers, but every time I attempt to open it in AI it crashes the software... not a hard crash where it just up and quits, but it just sits there and spins and spins and spins and ultimately I have to manually kill it... and no error is provided.
AI is supposed to handle .svg files, correct? What might I be doing wrong?

Not necessarily anything. The file is probably mal-formatted and/or does contain proprietary non-SVG data from the program that created it. You can try Scribus or Open Office as well as the demo versions of other vector drawing programs, but if it doesn't open in any of those, chances are indeed that the file is useless...

Why am I getting an error for addChild()?

Your class, AudioPlayer, doesn't extend a class which has

You have quite a lot going on there and quite a few things to peer at to try to get to the bottom of your difficulties.
Check the validator for your html and also your CSS.
I notice in your HTML that you have an awful lot of &nbs; in you code which I presume you are using to position text. With CSS styling and positioning you really have no need to do that. If you have text in a <p> element you can push the text away from the edge of that element with padding or push the element away from it's containing element edge with a margin on the <p> element.
Say you had some text like this:
<p>This is my text</p>
give the element and id <p id="pushaway"> and then write a CSS rule:
#pushaway {
padding-left: 50px;
to push it 50px; away from the container.
Look what happens to your "Our Mission" sub heading when you enlarge the text size in the browser. You might do better there by using right aligning your text and then using a padding-left or margin right.
If you could remove all or most of the &nbs;'s from your code it would make it easier to review.
Lots of the errors in the validators results for you html indicate you haven't used alt="" in your <img> elements. XHTML likes it if you do. If you fix those and then revalidate that will leave you with fewer errors and it won't be so scary.
The CSS validation indicates a few simple problems and it would be worth you working your way through them. For instance, you have declared a color with only four digits when it needt to be either three or six - #3331
That's all I can do for the moment, but I reckon you should see what you can achieve by working through the validator results and then come back here.
One more thing, You could simplify your header even further by using the logo as a background image and then just adding your text "Owned by Those We Serve" I'd also suggest adding an <h1> element before that to declare the name of you company. I know it's in your page in an <h4> element but it strikes me that should be in an <h1> Then put the "Owned by..." text in an <h2> I'm not sure if it should really be directly in a <div> it should at least be in a <p> element. None of that will affect any layout problems your having, I'm just tidying it up the way I would if it were my page. Perhaps I'm being to nosey and fussy!
Most important is do what you can to work through those validator results and come back with stuff you're not sure of.

I've looked around the forum (probably not hard enough) and
I'm still looking, but I haven't seen this question pop up
anywhere. My problem is that I would like to have a movie clip
rotate around a static focal point while also being able to move
up, down, left, right, without changing the point on the screen in
which it rotates from. I'm trying to find ways to clarify what I
mean, but I'm having trouble right now. If this doesn't make sense,
then let me know. I will try and rephrase it better. Thank you.

how about some drawing using or screen shot of something like
that ?
Can't really picture what is that you try to do.
Or perhaps something like that in real life to take sample

Okay, heres my real life example. Take a pen/cil and paper.
Take the pen and make a dot in the center of the paper and hold the
pen on that dot. Now if you were to spin/rotate that paper it would
naturally want to rotate around the pen. Now if you were to move
the pen an inch away from that dot and again tried to rotate the
paper, the paper would, again, want to rotate around that pen. THIS
is what I want to have happen. Instead, in my flash, the "paper"
rotates around the original dot. So, my question is, how to I place
that dot elsewhere.
If this is still unclear I will try photos next time.

Newbie - Transitions Issues

I am a new user (hobbyist) to Final Cut Express 4, upgrading from iMovie. I am having all kinds of problems understanding how to edit my transitions.
I put two clips together, create handles for them by marking In and Out (not split edits), then add a transition. Then I review to see how I like the transition. Invariably I want to adjust it by shortening or lengthening the transition.
Let's say I want to lengthen the transition from 1s to 2s and it's a Cross Dissolve. My understanding is you have to go back into each clip and adjust the handles.
First thing I notice when I double click on the Timeline to bring a clip back into the Viewer is that FCE has automatically made a split edit when I added the transition. Specifically, it has moved the upper marker (video) back as though I didn't create the handle, and it has left the lower marker (audio) with the handle. I have no idea why and I don't like it. This isn't dialogue or anything, if I want a split edit I would do it myself manually. I can't say Clear Split in the menu because it's greyed out. Further, I can't Option-drag the audio and video markers back into line.
Second, and more importantly, I can't seem to adjust the handles properly or adjust the transition duration. I go in and set a new In and Out manually (because for some reason I can't even drag with the mouse), but the lengthening only happens on the audio portion of the handle, not the video. So when I try to change the transition duration from 1s to 2s, it won't stretch beyond the 1s.
I'm so frustated because I have a hundred transitions to add... Please help!

Transition are handled differently in Final Cut than in iMovie.
There are many ways to tweak clip in and out point.
Use the Ripple (shortcut RR) and move the out point of the outgoing clip in timeline. Do the same fro the in point of incoming clip.
You can also use the Roll (R), slip (S), Slide(SS) tool. You can use the trim edit window (double click on the edit point in timeline). You can use the ripple tool in viewer and set new IN or OUT point.
Make a test:
*Use SHIFT-L to toggle linked selection setting to off.*
Open a slug in viewer, use F9 to insert it in a new timeline. There should be a video clip(V1) and a linked audio clips (A1 and A2).
Now click in viewer and use F9. A second copy is added after the first one. select the edit point between video clip on V2. Use COMMAND -T to add a cross dissolve. The transition is added only to video clip. Not audio clip. Use the Ripple or rool tool and move the edit point. There should be a audio dritf that occurs. Bad thing.
Now repeat the edit with SHIFT-F9 instead. The transition is added to Video AND audio. Use the ripple or rool tool and the transition point move.
Remember that FCE add video or audio transitions. That's what explains the split edit.
If you *turn linked selection to ON again*, you'll avoid this problem.

Newbie Background issue (CSS + Image on top)

Hey,
Okay, so I'm working on this website in Dreamweaver, and I designed this background in Photoshop: http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/453/bg2xa.jpg
The gradient part of this background I uploaded in my CSS by importing 1px and x-repeat.
However, now the problem is that I don't know how to add those "wires" on top of my gradient background image. Is this somehow possible? Remember it's a background, so later there will be text etc. put on top.

You create a wrapper and add you big image as the background (test.jpg). I have given it a height for illustration purposes. then your 1 px image use in your body as i think you were already doing.

Newbie Editing Issue

When I import an audio file into the sample editor and highlight a section to edit, editor refuses to allow me to cut the section (the 'cut' selection won't even light up, only 'copy' lights up). Pushing APPLE-X only results in a warning 'Boing!' What do I need to do to allow cuts to be made? Am I importing the file improperly? Is there a 'safety' I need to deactivate? Or am I just truly lame? Any help greatly appreciated. Mat

Hi,
this is strange! Sounds like the file is read-only. If you select the file in the Finder and press Command + I (show info), at the bottom of the info window you should see that you have read & write access on your file. If not, you should change the rights to read & write.

Newbie SMS issue

Hi all
Hoping someone may be able to help me with my iPhone 6. It's my first ever Apple produc and I'm still finding my way but there's a very annoying problem that I'm encountering. When I receive a message I get a little bubble appear where I can start replying without having to go to the actual messaging part. However if I'm typing a reply and receive another message as I'm typing the new message pops up instead and I lose everything I was just in the middle of typing. It's like the new message overwrites everything?
Am I doing something wrong?

You may simply have to scroll down in the message if the message you are receiving is from the same party you are responding to.
Anyway, you should familiarize yourself with this manual, especially the Messages part:

Newbie installation issue

I've installed java standard edition to C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_02 on a windows 2000 pro box. The path environment does point to the bin folder. The javac.exe file is NOT in the bin file or anywhere else on my machine. I have uninstalled and installed several times even going down to j2re1.3 with same results. Where would it be?
