Newbie WiFi Question...Help!

I am going on a cross country trip and would like to use my iTouch as my main mode of internet access. Relying on free WiFi at coffee places ect. is not going to cut it. I'm wondering if there is a way to pay for internet access or can that only be done with the iPhone?
Can the iTouch be hooked up to mobile broadband?
Any help would be awesome!

You're stuck with free or paid Wi-Fi access (places like Starbucks, etc.) There is no option for mobile broadband - that requires hardware that the iPod Touch does not have (cellular radios like the iPhone has).

  • Newbie audio question--help please...

I recently recorded/captured video from Canon HV30 and unfortunately found that only Left audio channel was recorded..Right channel in non-existant. How do I duplicate the audio track from Left to Right so that both tracks are played in sync?
I appreciate your help on this newbie question!

When the left channel is filled you use the Fill Left effect
The Fill Left effect duplicates the left channel information of the audio clip and places it in the right channel, discarding the original clip’s right channel information.
Instead of putting the effect on each clip use the Audio Mixer.

  • A few Newbie Aperture questions - Help much appreciated!

    Hi All,
I have just purchased Aperture and only played with it for a few hours - I'm really stunned with how great it works (especially for the price).
I got a 550d for Christmas and I wanted to take my photos to the next level there are a couple of behavioural questions I'd like cleared up if possible!
    1. When I import files from my Camera I use Image capture, import them to a folder on my NAS drive and then import the ones I want to edit/keep into Aperture, Am I right in assuming that Aperture keeps these files in it's library and I do not need to keep the originals on the NAS drive?
    2. Aperture is an editing / image browsing application, when I edit a photo how can I view the original version? How does Aperture store the file as two photos or one big file? - I ask because I had edited a photo and wanted to email the Original and the edited version to a friend so he could check them out, I used the email button but I could only get it to mail the edited version. Even when I pressed 'M' to show master and clicked mail it still attached the edited version. The work around I had was to remove all edits and click mail and then just redo them - but it would be nicer to be able to share originals and edited photos, I understand for browsing though having Aperture show you're edited photos only is enough.
    3. Regarding Photosteam (I have an iPad which it's cool for) - When I import items do they go straight onto Photostream? Can I import items and later selectively add to photostream? and finally If I take a picture with my iPad it shows up in photostream but if I save an image from Safari or mail on the iPad does it also go to photostream?
    4. When I edit a photo does the edited changes get reflected on photostream?
    5. When I edit a photo do I have to save it? I seem to be able to just edit and close Aperture and my edits are auto saved? I assume you can't mess up an Original photo because you can always undo the non destructive edits, but can you undo the edits and exit Aperture and then later redo the edits on the same photo - does it keep a history of edits?
Thanks a million for all the help,
    Regards,
    John

    You've made a good start!
Am I right in assuming that Aperture keeps these files in it's library and I do not need to keep the originals on the NAS drive?
Yes.  On import, unless you tell it otherwise, Aperture copies the file into the Library.  It is then called a "Master".  Aperture features non-destructive editing: your Masters are _never_ altered.  Keeping your Masters on NAS is not supported.  Don't forget to back-up.
Aperture is an editing / image browsing application, when I edit a photo how can I view the original version?
"m" toggle the view from Master to Version.  You can easily create a new Version from the Master, and view your original and your adjusted Version side-by-side.  Many novices do this, but gradually abandon the practice and just use the "m" toggle as needed.
How does Aperture store the file as two photos or one big file?
It's a bit tricky.  Aperture stores the Master and never alters it.  Aperture creates a _text_ file of instructions on how to alter the Master.  This text file is called a "Version".  What you see is an Image created on-the-fly by applying the instructions in the Version to the Master.  It is only when you need a share-able image-format file that you create one by exporting the Image.
it would be nicer to be able to share originals and edited photos
Use "File→Export→Master" to make a copy of your original to email.
    Photosteam
    Don't know.
When I edit a photo do I have to save it? I seem to be able to just edit and close Aperture and my edits are auto saved?
Don't worry about "Save" in Aperture.  Aperture is a database.  Databases automatically save all changes.  You do not save adjustments you make in Aperture.  There is no "Save" function.
I assume you can't mess up an Original photo because you can always undo the non destructive edits, but can you undo the edits and exit Aperture and then later redo the edits on the same photo - does it keep a history of edits?
(Edits in Aperture are called "Adjustments".)  Aperture always applies your adjustments in a fixed order.  This order is shown in the order of the Adjustment Bricks on the Adjustments tab of the Inspector.  You can turn any Adjustment on or off by checking the box at the top left of the Brick (one of the reasons I keep my Inspector to the right of my Viewer/Browser is to have these more readily accessed).  You can alter the settings of any Adjustment at any time.  The Bricks on the Inspector _are_ your history.  Since they are always applied in a fixed order, there is no reason to keep a list of the Adjustments you make in the order you make them.
You can collapse or expand each Brick, and you can collapse all of them by "{Option}+clicking" one of the disclosure triangles.  You can add or remove Bricks from your default set.  Any time you use a Quick Brush, a Brick is added (or activated).
(Added) Screenshot of my current default Adjustment Bricks:
Good luck.  It's a fabulous program.

  • IMac Newbie - Airport to WIFI printer help

I've just bought a Lexmark printer to go with my core duo intel iMac. The printer has WIFI and I thought I might be able to connect it through Airport?
It has USB if I have to use it, but wireless would be awesome.
I've got no idea about Airport as I'm a recent PC convert since my mate sold me his iMac.
I did try to create a network but I wasn't really sure what I was doing.... Passwords and hex and all that and then not knowing how to change or delete a network I may have created - too much in one night for a newbie.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ah, okay. Well, no, you're right, you can do what you describe. Here's how.
First, find out from the printer's documentation what kind of encryption type it supports. You'll be looking for the phrase "WEP" or ideally "WPA" or "WPA2".
Next, on the Mac, go to System Preferences, Sharing, and Internet Sharing.
For "Share your connection from" choose your (USB?) device.
For "To computers using" choose "Airport". Then set up a wireless network name and choose the appropriate encryption type that the printer will support. As I say, ideally this will be WPA or WPA2, and choose a good 8-character password. If you're using WPA/WPA2, you don't need to worry about hex characters (that's an old WEP scheme).
Now you have a wireless network, and you should follow your printer's instructions to join it. Your Mac will essentially be the "wireless router" or "gateway" and its IP will be 192.168.2.1; your printer's IP address will probably be 192.168.2.2, but you should try to allow it to get an IP address automatically.
Let us know if that works.

  • My FaceTime wit work.when people FaceTime me all I get is a missed notification. And when I try to FaceTime someone it tells me to connect to wifi please help..

When I try using FaceTime it doesn't seem to work. When someone face times me all I get is a missed notification. An when I try to FaceTime someone it tells me to connect to wifi please help.

Alright, when you are attempting to FaceTime someone, are you connected to WiFi? With the iPhone 4, it does not support using FaceTime over the cellular network, you will need to be connected to Wi-fi.

  • General place for newbie datamodeler questions?

With the production release of SQL Developer Data Modeler I'd assume that this forum will draw a bunch of new users. Is there a better place to ask some pretty simple, newbie like questions that won't bother the more seasoned members?
For instance, I am working in a Rails environment, which has some stringent naming conventions, one of which is that all of the primary key columns are numeric and called "id", with the foreign key linked columns called <table_name>_id.  When engineering a logical model to a relational model, the added foreign key columns are all "id#".  Is there a way I can define a naming rule to keep me from having to redo the relation column names?
Also, we have a standard set of columns (mostly Rails related) which appear in every table. Can I define a generation rule which automatically includes these tables?
    Thanks

Thank you. I will try changing that setting.
IS there a setting which tells the relational model to automatically create pk and fk indexes? I haven't seen one, and manually setting them up is a tedious task. --sw

my iCloud Backup button is grayed out and i cant turn it on. All my devices are on Wifi. Help! Both my ipad and iPhone

A number of employers will push a security profile to your phone when you add their exchange account that prevents you from backing it up to iCloud.  They do this because they don't want confidential company information on another companies servers.  If this is the case, you will find a setting called "Profile" in Settings>General near the bottom.
You would have to contact the company's IT department to confirm that they are preventing you from backing up to iCloud but that's normally what causes the iCloud backup setting to be grayed our or missing from an iOS device.

  • Aperture isn't importing videos from iPhone, only photos. I've tried plugged in and over wifi. Help?

Aperture isn't importing videos from iPhone, only photos. I've tried plugged in and over wifi. Help?

How did you transfer the photos from your other iPhone? If you did it by importing them from the old phone to a computer and then used iTunes to sync them back to the new phone, then you would delete them by syncing again using iTunes but this time change the selection of which photos are to be synced. Each time you sync using iTunes, it sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current settings/selection in iTunes.

  • Newbie script question... consecutive numbers with update.

complete newbie type question... this is also my first post.  ( I am using CS3)
does anyone have a script which can make it so I can add numbers into the text consecutively.
for example, if this is my text "the big fat dog sat on the very wide mat, but was then displaced by a unfriendly cat."
and I wanted to place a number 1, number 2, 3, etc at points in the text so it read, "the big fat dog1 sat on the very wide mat2, but was then displaced by a unfriendly cat3." but later wanted to add another number and have later numbers update themselves, so the text then said, "the big fat dog1 sat on the very wide mat2, but was then displaced3 by a unfriendly cat.4".
by inserting the three, the previous three became four.
Has anyone got something which might be useful in this regard.
    Many thanks
    Steve

i wanted to avoid footnotes as they leave a bar at the bottom of each page.
i wanted a script to do something similar to footnotes but not much further.
does anyone have just a simple script that can do what I asked?

  • I just boot camp my macbook white unibody to windows 7 but I can't setup my wifi plz help!

I just boot camp my macbook white to windows 7 home premium.
Used to run on windows XP(no problem with the wifi)
    Plz help~~

    Howdy demccll,
If your Windows side is not seeing your Airport Extreme, I'm wondering if the Boot Camp drivers (Windows support software) was installed correctly.  That is what installs the Airport drivers among other things.
Boot Camp: Install Windows on your Mac
    Install Windows support software
After installing Windows, the support software installs Boot Camp drivers to support your Mac hardware, including AirPort devices, the built-in camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and the function keys on an Apple keyboard. The software also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and the Apple Boot Camp system tray item.
You can download the support software by selecting the “Download the latest Windows support software from Apple” option in Boot Camp Assistant. The support software must be copied to an external USB drive formatted as MS-DOS (FAT).
After you configure Windows, if you kept the external USB drive that has the Windows support software inserted, an installer starts automatically. Otherwise, insert the external USB drive, then double-click the setup.exe file located in the BootCamp folder.
Follow the onscreen instructions. Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
You don’t need to respond to installer dialogs that appear only briefly during the installation.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you must respond to. Look behind open windows.
When the support software finishes installing, click Restart, then click Yes.
After your Mac restarts, follow the instructions for any other installers that appear.
Check for updated Windows support software by using Software Update or going to the Boot Camp Support site.
    Best regards,
    Nubz

  • HT201363 I forget security question, help me recover?

I forget security question, help me recover?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • About Java 2 opaque font color question, help needed!

About Java 2 opaque font color question, help needed!
I was trying to test opaque font (the string has a foreground color and a background color), but i can't find the method for doing that.
i can change foreground by Graphics2D.setPaint(Color.black).
Anybody know how to change the background of the string?
    Thanks!

Hi. The way I'd do it would be to use the font metrics to find the length of a string and draw a rectangle and then drawstring over the rectangle. If you want an example, I can post it although I suspect theres a better way.

my ipod 4rth generation wont connect to my hom wifi but will connect to others . like when i try to use apps that require wifi it says i dont have wifi . HELP !

Since you have already isolated it down to your home network, if following Steve's instructions do not fix your issue, contact your Internet Service Provider or Router Manufacturer and make sure your network is set up according to this information: iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
