Newbie XServe Question - File Server

Hi,
I recently purchased XServe. I will be using it mostly as a file server for my Macs in our LAN. It is working fine for this service. Is there some way to safely access these same user files remotely via the internet while on the road ?
Could someone point me in the direction to find a solution for doing this ?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Art.

Tod, thank you for your answer.
My XServe will have a fixed private IP 192.168.0.11 and will be behind a Linux firewall that has two NICs (one public to the internet and one private to our LAN). I have complete access to this firewall so port forwarding should not be a problem. A few questions:
1. What ports do I have to forward to my XServe's IP in order to have multiple users access their files ?
2. What software should my remote users have for this remote access on their Mac Laptops ?
3. What service should I activate in the XServe to grant access to these remote users ?
4. Where can I find documentation on how to do this on the Server Side ? On the client side ?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.
Art.

  • G4 Xserve as File Server..

I have a G4 Xserve that I want to use for a file server. Can anyone point me in the right direction to start this process. I need to know it all I am not familiar about setting this up but it needs to be done soon. I don't know if I can do it using OS X or do I need the server edition of osX. If anyone could please help I would appreciate it.

The XServe will come with a full version of Mac OS X Server, so you're set as far as the software is concerned.
The biggest issue is which version of Mac OS X Server is on the box.
The actual process for configuring and running a file server has changed over the years and the specific instructions will depend on the version you're running.
If it's running an old version, you might consider upgrading it to the latest. It'll be easier to setup and manage not only because Apple have improved the software over time, but also because there are far more people familiar with the current OS version than there are who can remember the older ones.
Personally, for example, I can help on 10.5 and 10.4. 10.3 gets a little fuzzy (well, OK, a lot fuzzy) and I can't even remember how to spell 10.2...

  • (question) File Server Migration ability ?

    Hi, All
I started to migrate my 2003 File server to a new 2012 File server
I used the recommended scenario (RoboCopy) but because the current server is in another vLAN so it's very slow
My friend told me that I can attach the new storage to the current 2003 server and copy it, it'll be faster
now my question by copying it like this, shall the permission will be effected
(if I copied the data from one drive to another using this command robocopy /E //COPY:DATSOU /MIR /log+:C:\CopoReportLog.txt /xo /fft ) shall it get the right permission
    Thanks

    Hi,
You can use the robocopy command to copy data and security permissions to a storage then attach the storage to the new server. But the robocopy does not do aprovide local group migration. It will migrate the permissions to the new server, but they will show
up as SIDs without the local groups. You’d create the local groups, then you'd use SubInACLs to substitue the old SIDs for the new Group names.
The command line would look like this:
    SubInAcl /subdirectories C:\SomeDirectory /Replace=SomeUglyLookingSID=NewServer\NewGroup
    SubInACL (SubInACL.exe)

  • Xserve as file server

    Hey guys,
We're considering putting an xserve in charge of our all windows network as DC. Should be no probs, my question is in regards to storage.
The HD modules for the xserve are expensive so I'm looking at a cheaper storage solution. Maybe a linux box choc-a-bloc with HD's.
How would xserve go about administering the shares, talking to the linux box?
    Cheers
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Sorry my question may have been a little ambiguous.
We plan to admnister user accounts with the xserve. How would the user accounts on an xserve and the linux machine work together? Would we need to make the same account on each machine? Would it be a mess?
    Cheers.

  • Mac mini file server question...

I would like to configure my mac mini G4 as a file server using the current OS X Tiger operation system. Basically I will use another computer as the web server and have the mac mini host the files for it.
Any recommendations or restraints for doing this? Do I have to worry about the Mac Mini going to sleep mode? Can OS X handle this kind of operation?
    Thank you for your help

Yes my Mini is running the latest version of OSX. I also run Windows XP, Vista beta, Linux: PCLinux & Ubuntu on it through Parallels. I have zero problems between Mac & Linux. The only thing I'd recommend is depending what OSes you're working with you might want to partition and set-up a common FAT32 area. I know Linux can't write to NTFS (tho Xandros 4 can) and Windows doesn't like the Mac drive system much. So FAT32 is the common file system all operating systems can read/write to fine. Overall I don't foresee you having any real problems.

  • Question: Multiple iTunes users w/ single music library on file server

My son and I (separate computers) host all of our music on a common file server. Initially, it was my music library...when he loaded iTunes, it imported everything and all was fine.
However, now if I add a few songs to the library (I can see them in the shared folders that we both have setup as our music folder within iTunes) they don't show up in his music library unless we either import them or drag them from File Mgr into iTunes.
There has to be an "automatic" way...doesn't there?
    I'm eager for suggestions.
    Thanks much,
    Rick

Sorry to say, there is not an easier way and folks have been requesting it from Apple for years.
You are running into the situation noted in this article, towards the end

  • Question about asc format in file server !

In the z program that exists here it what i have a problem with
When I use  local file, I can choose the format for data (ASC, WK1, DAT, etc u2026) and the format I need is DAT (DAT     ASCII data table with column tab)
But when I use file server, I can't choose the format. The output file is always in ASC format.
Is the file server inevitably in ASC format, or is it possible to choose an other format ?
    Thank you ,
    Teresa

when downloading the file (or uploading for that matter), you can define the format with addition:
    IN TEXT MODE
    IN BINARY MODE

  • New intel Xserve with Leopard Server setup assistance....

    Hello
Im quite a newbie when it comes to administrating OS X Server, Xserves and RAID's so please bare with me if the following question seems obvious or dumb...
Currently I have inherited the following setup - G5 Xserve running 10.4.10 Server which has the following services running = Kerio MailServer, AFP, DHCP, DNS, Firewall, NAT, OD, VPN and Windows. This Xserve is also connected to an Apple RAID via fibre channel for file sharing and also to a Tape multi-changer backup unit via scsi.
I have just bought a new Intel Xserve and have installed 10.5 Server on it. I have this server as I would like to get iCal Server and Directory up and running and eventually share some of the G5 services. For iCal Server and Directory I assume ill need the 10.5 Server set up as Open Directory Master but my worry is I have that already on my G5 Xserve. If I was to migrate the 25 usernames from there to the 10.5 Server, would every user still be able to connect to the RAID (as the RAID is still physically connected to the G5 Xserve) for file sharing?
I hope some one could advise or recommend a better way, let me know if you need me to try and clarify the question better!
    Thanks in advance

  • Help me Decide on OpenBSD or Solaris as my web and file server please

    Hi
    5 questions
i have been using OpenBSD as my Web and file server for a while now
    and FreeBSD as my Desktop
i decided on OpenBSD as my Server because of its Security
    1) But now i hear Solaris is the most Secure OS pn the Planet? is this true
    And which is real Unix?
i seem to always have trouble with things such as PHP on OpenBSD
Most of my pages run as *.html but i also have a forum which uses PHP 4
But all my PHP pages come up blank..
i am always encountering errors using PHP
    2) If i Switch to Solaris will it b even harder to use or
is it precompiled with PHP 4 and higher when i install Apache
    3) Also what about cgi and the ability to use *.htaccess files should i use them
    4) Also i i still would like to generate SSH keys ssh-keygen
is that possible?Forcing the user to login using only a key and
    not a password on SSH
    5) Does Solaris have any Linux compatibility as well?as FreeBSD has
Concider me a newbie even though i use to post on this forum once before
i am always experimenting trying new things out

Either will work just fine. Since you're asking in the Sun forums, you should receive more Solaris replies of course! :-)
The weak point in your setup (as far as security goes) would be the use of PHP either way...

  • Securely setting Up a Web/ File server

I was just placed into managing my companies new xServe and had a few questions that I would not mind a second opinion on.
The Servers primary role will be a file server, iCal server and sharing a company wide address book.
The secondary role would be a backup web server for a few websites that are hosted outside, but have been known to go down from time to time.
Currently we have a firewall/ router that manages DHCP with none-routable internal IPs. We also have a 4 port cable modem that is used for our static IPs (we have 5 static IPs) Right now we are only using one IP for the router.
    My Idea:
Plug one NIC into the cable modem giving it a real IP, then lock it down with the servers software firewall to port 80. Plug the other into our switch that sits behind the firewall. The thought was that if you wanted to use the file server or administer the server you would need to use the VPN, but the outside could still use the web services.
I am no security expert and linking the two networks together via the server kinda sounds like a bad idea... any thoughts?

    NFS
Share a directory from your server using the command share. For example:
    # To share the directory /store to all users in the network, use:
share -o ro=host1:host2:host3... -d "My first share" /storeThe previous command will share the directory /store only to the computers listed as host1:host2:host3.... No other computer will have access. You can check the entire share usage with man share.
From your client computer, assuming Solaris, issue the command:
mount -o ro,soft,bg host:/store /mnt/net/remove_host/store The use of option bg prevents the mount to hang during system startup if the remote computer is not accessible.
In your vfstab, use something like:
    swap    -       /tmp    tmpfs   -       yes     -
    wgtsinf01:/store - /store nfs - yes bg

  • File Server Configuration on Windows Server 2012 R2

    Dear All,
I need your support in my scenario.
    Work Environment:
I work in a company where we have multiple departments.
    My Department is elearning.
All Departments get Internet and Network Access from IT Department.
    My Department Requirement:
I Need to Install and Configure File Server and assign storage space for 25 users for storing their respective work files.
    Availability:
I have installed windows 2012 R2 on my physical server which is connected to my local network
    My Question:
Do I have to make my server a DC to Install and configure File Server for my requirement?
If No, then How can I fulfill my requirement ?
    Kindly revert.
    Best Regards,
    Ahmed

Do you already have an AD domain in your environment? If yes then simply add your File Server as member server and use your AD user accounts to grant the required accesses.
    If no then you can:
Create local user accounts and provide access using them
or make your server a DC, create AD accounts and then grant the required accesses
Before proceeding, it would be better to see with your IT department what is already available and their recommendations to manage your needs.

  • Decommissioned a file server, but every mobile account in the place is still trying to connect to it on login!

A couple of months ago we decommissioned the 10.4.11 xserve that was serving as our LDAP server and home directory server for mobile accounts.  We migrated all of that to a newer 10.6.8 xserve.  It was a fairly rough migration, but we've pretty much sorted it out except for one last annoyance: when you look at System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items for all of our mobile accounts, every single client is still trying to mount an afp share on the old server.  Logging in takes FOREVER because the connection needs to time out, so now my users are no longer logging out/in as often as they should, and so their Home Sync's are getting old.
When you go to the client's Preferences, the line referencing the old server share is still there, but the minus sign is greyed out so the item cannot be deleted.
The Kind is listed as "unknown" and there is a grey warning triangle next to it.
This is clearly some sort of template/Preference that is hardcoded to the old name, and whatever file this is got moved to the new server (which has a different name and different numeric IP address.)  Because even the BRAND NEW users that I have created since after "pdc04.hgbc.com" disappeared are trying to log in to the non-existent share on the non-existent server, too!
I have tried running grep on the entire disk on one of the clients looking for the string "pdc04", and updated everything that I found using vi directly on the files.  I have tried running grep on select directory trees on the new file server looking for pdc04.  In my grep on the client, I found the string in
         /Library/Managed Preferences/user/loginwindow.plist
         /Library/Managed Preferences/user/complete.plist
but searching all of the logingwindow.plist and complete.plist files on the new server comes up with nothing.
Does anyone have any idea where the template or preference or plist is on the server so that I can delete or update the file with the new host name?

I think that Grant is on the right track -- but the problem is that whatever file that pdc04's Server Manager wrote into is not available to pdc's Server Manager to edit or even display.
We upgraded mostly by turning off the G5 10.4 xserve and unplugging the fiber-channel RAID (with user accounts on it) and plugging the RAID into a fiber-channel card on the new (to us) Nehalem 10.6 xserve, which we did after using Migration Assistant between the machines.  Then we had various and sundry problems, and we ended up moving all of the mobile account directories to the internal RAID on the new server.
Clearly there is a file somewhere that acts as a template for mobile accounts and it refers to the old machine but its been moved to the new machine.
Only two of the mobile accounts have directories in the /Library/Managed Preferences folder.  One of them, ironically, is mine, and my account hasn't worked right since we went to the new server.

  • One USB HD with Multiple AEBS, Move from NAS/File Server

Okay to explain my question I'll describe what i want to do. If this is possible i would buy 2 airport extremes, and one USB HD. I would then use the USB HD to do TimeMachine backups to an Airdisk. I would like to then be able to take the USB HD with me when i go to work, and be able to do Airdisk backups there, having connected the same USB drive to different TC or AEBS, and afterwards, obviously bring it home and continue doing backups there. Is this at all possible? Has anyone tried? Can i at least browse my backups after having connected them to a different AEBS?
Another question is, up until now i have been using an "unsupported" backup to my Linux File Server over netatalk. I did this, mainly because i have raid, and my data can't really be lost this way. Is there anyway to move this backup to an Airdisk? I read something here about different formats being used to save data on different types of backups. The share is on a partition that is formated ext3, if that helps at all. Oh and the backup itself is a sparseimage.
    Thanks for your replies,
    Dmitry

It should work fine, but you may run out of space quickly if you back up multiple computers to the disk.

  • Can you set a max size for a folder on a file server

I've got a G5 Xserve that I'm using as a file server running 10.3.9. I need more space on my array so I bought bigger drives and will move the data to the new, larger array.
For the health of my drives, I want my array to maintain at least 10% free space so I would like for the people using the shares to only see 90% of the larger space. (I don't want to have to be the 'drive space' policeman 6 months from now when the RAID fills up again)
I know I could create 2 partitions in diskutil but I'd like something more dynamic.
Ideally I'd like to put my shared folders inside of a main folder and tell Server to only display 90% of the size of the partition when a folder from the partition is mounted remotely. That way people won't know there is a quota which keeps them from trying to copy data into a share that shows 10% free space.
The shares are used by both macs and PCs so I'd rather not go with a solution based upon network protocol.
    Many Thanks,
    Paul
    G5 Xserve   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

There's no way I'm aware of to artificially display a different capacity/available space than what's actually there. If it's a 1TB volume, it's a 1TB volume and the OS isn't going to report that as 900GB.
The only other solutions I can think of is to either enable quotas which will let you restrict the amount of disk space any user can consume, or attach a folder action to the volume where the script automatically checks the volume size whenever new files are added and takes action at the appropriate time (you need to define what that action is, though).
