Newby question - sorry - Velocity/volume confusion - my head

Hello!
Sorry about this. If it's any consolation, I have tried searching for the answer, but I'm still none the wiser.
I've played some midi stuff in, and now I want to fade out some notes at the end of a region. Firstly, how does one change the VOLUME of midi notes, rather than VELOCITY, which is easy?
Secondly, I can happily fade out audio regions with the crossfade tool, but not midi. Do I use automation? Is that the easiest way?
Help. I hurt.
Thank you.

Fader automation would be the best way to control volume.
As far as velocity and volume are concerned, volume will only follow velocity changes if volume is mapped to velocity in a given patch. For example, if you bring up the *Basic Synth Det* patch in EXS24, playing a note with a velocity value of 127 will not be much louder than playing at note with a velocity value of 12, because the volume is not programmed to vary according to velocity.
Given another example, if you bring up the *Reso King MW* patch in EXS24, changing the velocity value will provide little change in volume, but a big change in the filter mapped to the velocity.
One can tweak these patches to tie the volume to velocity, but one can't say that velocity and volume are the same.
The biggest difference between MIDI velocity and MIDI volume is that velocity is triggered at the start of a MIDI note, whereas the volume controller values can be raised or lowered before, during and after a key is struck. You might say volume is "continuous" MIDI data and does not even rely on a single note being struck (which makes for very uninteresting music, but I digress). This is the fundamental reason why you can't have a "volume value" for a given note--the volume is not dependent on the note, because it's continuous.
Given a real-world scenario, consider the difference between a drum patch and a string patch. With a drum patch, it makes sense (in arguably most cases) to map the volume level to velocity, so that the harder you strike the key, the louder the sound is. In the case of a string patch, you may want to control the volume levels over time, for example, holding a chord, fading out a bit, then in, then back out again. Well, because the the volume changes over time, you can't assign a single value to the "note-on" as you would velocity. You need to draw the volume swells over time (or use a controller to control the volume levels).
That said, if you look at your piano roll editor, click on View->Hyper Draw, you can see the various MIDI parameters you can control, including Volume and Note Velocity. Now that I think of it, you should check this out anyway because you can see the difference between drawing velocity changes and drawing volume changes. Velocity is based on the attack of each note so each note has its associated velocity value (a dot with a little line extending from it), whereas volume is a continuous line that extends from left to right.
To close this long-winded speech, if you want to control volume, do so with automation. If you want to control volume as you would velocity (i.e. by notes), (re-)program your patch so that volume changes with velocity.

  • Another newby question -- sorry

    Hi All,
I've composed a sequence which has regular fonts --- the fonts are black, with a transparent background. When I export, I just see a black screen in quicktime. I want to import this into Final Cut --- any ideas? How do I get it to display just the black characters?

You won't see the text if you view the file in QuickTime Player.
Import your LiveType movie into FCP and superimpose on the background. It should composite automatically.
If you have LiveType version 1.2 or higher, you can import the project file directly into FCP and treat it exactly as if it were a video clip. No need to render a movie first.

  • Why do I have question marks in the finder window header?

Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Lion I've noticed a large question mark in the finder window header. There is a smaller one beneath it, and they're both located just to the left of the search window.

Can you do a screenshot please?
Also may just grag and drop them outside the finder window.

Did this update make a physical change? Branching from that question, will this update confuse lets say, a parent that isn't savvy?

Did this update make a physical change?
    No
will this update confuse lets say, a parent that isn't savvy?
This will depend on whether they are savvy enough to open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on their Mac , click on the picture of the AirPort, and then click the Update button.
It that sounds too complicated, best to let someone else handle the update.

  • General help, velocity/volume matrix edit

Does anyone know if there is a way to increase the volume/velocity of all the midi notes in a song in one go.
Also does anyone know if it is possible to set a velocity/volume for all of the notes (midi obviously), so say i wanted all of the notes, of varying vel/vol, in my song to be 127 vol/vel would it be possible to do that n if so how?
    Thank you very much.

    Hi
One way i can think of is to select all the tracks/regions.
Open them in the matrix editor.
Select the transformer and choose the velocity option.
Choose velocity as required and operate.
    hope this helps

  • IMovie and iDVD, Stupid Upgrade Questions, Sorry Must Ask

Okay, the deal is I have a PowerMac G4 Version 2.1 with a Combo Drive. I am upgrading to Mac OSX 3.0 so I can do certain things in iMovie and acquire a better browser. (My constraints on the iMovie project about which I've been inquiring are that at least 40 people have been waiting for copies of it for about a month and wondering why I don't come through with it--I sent a lengthy explanation to the guy who'll be duplicating it in case anyone asks. That's one reason I'm in such a hurry I have to ask urgent questions at forums and newsgroups and don't take the time to read every word ever written on every one of these systems and their various applications, abilities, and uses.)
I started out thinking I was about one step from having a completed project and the more I learn, the more grim the situation looks. Yet I've done ALL THIS WORK already to create beautiful titles and elaborately-edited outtakes. I HATE to ditch it all if any faint hope flickers into sight!
My Mac came with the following:
iMovie 3.0.3 -- which seems to be working fine, only problem is, due to deficiencies in other equipment, I'm having trouble getting my movie to DVD or into any other form where it can be played anywhere outside the Mac!
iDVD 2.1 -- My feeble brain, inadequate as it may be, has so far gathered the information that to go to DVD, a project can't be played in iMovie and sent straight to a DVD burner (can it?) There has to be some intermediary step. (Right?) People have argued the various merits of iDVD vs. Toast to accomplish this step. I hadn't opened my copy of iDVD because I am in no way near the point of being ready to make a DVD--I have not yet finished editing the project in iMovie. I made the hideous error of ASSUMING that since this came installed in my Mac, it would work fine when needed, just as iMovie did. When I tried to open it just to see what version I had, it wouldn't open and told me this:
    System Requirements
iDVD 2 requires a PowerMac G4 computer with 256 Megs of RAM, a built-in DVD-R Superdrive and Mac OS 10.1.3 or later.
Stupid redundant bonus question #1: WHY would this come installed on a Mac which lacks the hardware to use it? (iMovie could still be used to edit, and then copy projects--if I had a digital video camera--which I don't. The only other way we've figured is to send it back through the Canopus ADVC110 converter I used to get the video in there, and play it out to a VCR--a cumbersome process I've been assured will result in crummy quality.)
Okay, here are the REAL questions:
    1. I don't suppose there's any way the Canopus could be connected to the DVD burner and the information sent to a DVD that way? Just asking.
    2. Obviously the upgrade isn't going to fix things to make iDVD work, as I'm already using Mac OSX 10.2.8, so I would assume its discontent stems from not having the Superdrive--at least, it was complaining something about inadequate hardware and I think that's what it meant. Will connecting a DVD burner via FireWire convince iDVD to work (either automatically or after some sort of tweaking), or am I stuck replacing the drive? I bought a DVD burner the minute I realized my drive was a Combo Drive and not a Superdrive (which is the first time I stuck a blank DVD in it and nothing happened) before learning details about this intermediary step and that there is more than one way to accomplish it.
    3. Is it even worth replacing the Combo Drive with a Superdrive or is it more worth buying a whole new Mac? If I am FORCED to buy a new Mac, what should I do with the old one? (Not only am I ethically opposed to tossing a perfectly good piece of electronic equipment into the ravine, I might get fined for littering. Can a good home be found for it? For that matter it would be a pain as I've saved all sorts of stuff to the Hard Drive which would have to be transferred to the new one before I could get rid of the old one. So can I keep the old one...PLEASE?)
    4. After making the system upgrade, will I be able to bypass iDVD entirely by using Toast, or does Toast also have all sorts of requirements my hardware does not possess so I'll still be SOL, stuck replacing drives or even the whole Mac, or going directly to crummy-quality VHS as there is NO OTHER WAY OUT?
    5. After making the system upgrade, would I be ready for more advanced versions of iMovie and iDVD? Are any upgrades free, or does every improvement cost? Do I get them all at the Apple site, order some of them from some supplier or other the way I did with the Mac OSX upgrade, or what?
Thanks for helping to clear up my massive confusion!!!

Wow, thanks. It's good to know iDVD is still an option, even if I don't buy the Superdrive (is that even possible, to get the Combo Drive taken out of my current Mac and a Superdrive put in? There's a question still unanswered.)
(I think this is good to know--because part of my reasoning in asking the question was to eliminate one option or the other, and now I'm ending up with options of options, but hold on for Part 2 as I do have some questions concerning the capabilities of iDVD and Toast.)
Partly answering one of my own questions (although I'd appreciate confirmation from someone who actually knows,) if these Toast 7 requirements mean what I think they do, I don't see anywhere that it says the computer MUST have a Superdrive and CAN'T use an external DVD burner!
    Toast 7 Titanium
    Requirements:
    * PowerPC G4 processor or faster (G5 recommended for viewing DivX files on your Mac)
    * PowerPC G3 processor and Mac OS 10.2 users, see Toast 6 Titanium or Popcorn
    * Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later
    * 300 MB of free disk space to install
    * Up to 15 GB of temporary free disk space during usage
    * QuickTime 7 or later
    * CD or DVD burner and recordable media
If this is true (that I can use an external DVD burner) I like Toast already! My Quicktime Player is only version 6.5.2--is it going to be difficult, expensive, or both, to upgrade that? If it is or the other System Requirements are not met I can just go with Toast 6.
As far as those requirements, I promise you I don't understand a word of it but here is what my System Profiler says my Mac has. Maybe someone can make sense of it and help me decide which version of Toast to get or, if not, what to do:

One thing which may really sway me in favor of Toast is, will it make possible burning 2-hour DVDs? Supposedly iDVD will not enable anything longer than 90 minutes, and when I get to the other big project for which I really want to use the Canopus ADVC 110 converter, that is, converting my home movies from either VHS or 8mm video camera tape to DVD--well, ALL of my tapes are two hours long, because that's the way they come!! I don't see being limited to making 90-minute DVDs as anything but another GIANT PAIN of which I'm already amply supplied! So if Toast will fix this dilemma I'm ALL FOR IT!
As always, thanks for help and advice.

  • ISight System Requirements (dumb question, but I'm confused)

Sorry to ask such a purchase-related question, but I'm entirely confused as to whether I can use iSight with my G4 Cube.
I'm running OS 10.4.3 and have iChat AV installed, but my processor speed is only 500 MHz.
The information on the actual iSight package is unclear. So, after I was disuaded from buying one at a retail store, I checked the site store. There, the system requirements read:
"Macintosh computer with a 600MHz or faster PowerPC G3 or any PowerPC G4 or G5 processor."
I understand this to mean that, for people with G3 PowerPCs, their processor speed must be at least 600 MHz. But any G4 or G5 processor should be adequate.
However, when I called Apple Customer Service, the representative insisted that this means, no matter what processor you have, its speed must be at least 600 MHz.
    Can someone enlighten me?
    G4 Cube   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   500 MHz processor
    G4 Cube   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   500 MHz processor

Hello Jason. Different software applications that drive iSight can have different System Requirements.
There are a lot of choices of Applications You Can Use With iSight. Select the app that performs the function you want and then check its system requirements. Different applications have their own (and possibly different) requirements, so check carefully when considering other software.
The 600 MHZ requirement is the G3 processor speed minimum System Requirements for iChat AV 2.1. This particular 600 MHz speed requirement applies only to G3 Macs using iChat AV 2.1. ANY G4, including your Cube, can use iSight with iChat AV 2.1.
However, you are using iChat AV 3. Some of the System Requirements for iChat AV 3 are significantly higher than for version 2.1, but your G4 can still use iSight for one-to one iChat AV 3 video without PowerBoost.

  • Three questions on audio volume, widescreen, export

    Hello,
I am in the heat of building my 40 minute slideshow imovie hd6 to idvd 08 project with some important questions.
first question: I have lots of voice audio and music loops which have been nicely edited, cleaned, normalized - all WAV files, high output, no distortion. I imported these to test into imovie then idvd and played on TV, and it was really LOUD. And some of the voices distorted a bit, and the music almost blew my speakers. I had the volume way down. Is idvd normalizing all the audio? What is happening? If I understand it, I can workaround it in Audacity. Just drop the gain a bit?
second question: I am confused about the standard vs. widescreen. I have been thinking about doing the project in widescreen, the dvds will be distributed to folks, free of charge. My format is PAL, I live in Spain. A film making friend told me that 50% of people had widescreen tv's these days. I'm confused.
third question: I want to both make a dvd with idvd and also have a master copy to give to production company who would rather have it in .mov format to make copies. What is the best way to export getting maximum quality of image and sound, but that I can transport to someone?
    thank you,
    Jenifer
ps I have crossposted to imovie hd6.

    Hi
    1.
iMovie 1 to HD 6 mainly are intended for two kind of materials (as I get it)
    • Video - StreamingDV (as from a miniDV Camera) and via FireWire
    • Audio - Except from Camera also .aiff 48kHz 16-bit
    I would
    • Convert the audio to .aiff 48kHz 16-bit
    2.
Don't really understand. Most DVD-player can be set to match the Play-back device
    eg Widescreen or CTR-TV
    3.
DVD is a final product with a very reduced quality.
I only use miniDV tape and standard 4x3 TV-video as my material and to keep Maximum
Quality I always Copy-back to tape and deliver this. Then the reciever get's
    100% of original quality.
If You use 16x9 HD then I don't know if Copy-back to tape is a working solution
for You. There are HDV-Cameras using a very similar tape as miniDV and this
    should also keep Max Quality.
    Yours Bengt W

  • I recently submitted a question re. the volume which when I send from Garage Band 2008

I recently submitted a question re. sharing music I create and send from Garage Band 2008 to iTunes 11.1.1. I create a slide show in iPhoto 2008 and export to Quicktime (latest version) and ultimately to YouTube. By the time the file gets to Quicktime, the volume has defaulted to a low level which is unacceptable. This never happened until I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. How can I keep the volume? Must I update all of my iLife software?

    export the exact length:

  • Newby Question! Do I have keep my music on Itunes forever?

OK - I just got my 30g Ipod yesterday and I spent 3 hours importing music and then deleted the music out of Itunes to save space on my computer. When I started to import more music, low and behold, it erased all my music on my Ipod from last night. If I have a 30g Ipod, will I have to leave 30g of music on my computer slowing it down forever? What do you suggest, I'm clueless. This is ridiculous. I did change the preferences to manually manage music but it said I will have "eject" my Ipod each time I disconnect, what does that mean.
Help me please, I'm a total newby!
    Thank you

If you have your iPod set to transfer your music manually, then that “do not disconnect” message will continue to be displayed on your iPod until you manually eject it.
You can do this by clicking on the little eject icon next to the iPod listing in the source window of iTunes, or right click on it and select “eject”. Another way would be to use the “safely remove hardware” icon in the system tray next to the clock (looks like a grey rectangle with a green arrow above it). Click on this then select your iPod. Or through Windows, select start/my computer, right click on the iPod, select eject.
Just a word (alright several!) about deleting the songs in iTunes.
It is a very risky option. What if you needed to do a software restore (which is a very common fix for iPod problems)? This would erase the contents of your iPod. Any purchased music would be lost and need to be purchased again.
What if the iPod were stolen/lost/needed repair?
It’s much better to keep the music on your computer, and if storage space is at a premium, one option would be to buy an external hard drive, which are cheaper than ever nowadays, and keep your music library on that.
The iPod is a music player and was never intended as a long term storage device for the only copy of your music.
See also Backing up your music files in iTunes.
Sorry for the sermon, but we see a lot of folks weeping and wailing here that they lost all their music.

  • E71x questions? Alarm Volume? Display date on Hom...

I have a couple questions about my e71x.
I was testing the alarm to see if I would be able to be woke up by it and I noticed the volume is ascending and I cant find anywhere to change that.  Is that possible?  My ringer for the phone isnt ascending, so it doesnt use the same setting as the ringer.
Also, is there anyway to get the current date on the home screen?  When I was playing around with my alarm settings, it showed it up at the top of the screen where it normally displays the profile name that it is current set on.  When I changed profiles, it went away.  I didnt do anything to get it there, but I would like to set it like that.  Is there some way to do this?
    Thanks

  • Vibe Z2 Pro - Few newby questions

Hello, as a newby, I have a few simple questions about Z2 Pro and Vibe UI:
    (a) the main issue I have with Vibe UI on this phone is that the 4-apps-per-row look very huge, can you cange it to 5 apps per row with some settings? that would be really useful, as most other big phones are 5 apps per row.
    (b) can I make a guest mode? I think I saw with some other phones, that you can make a guest mode, so that your little cousens don't see all your apps that they don't need to see. I know there is secure mode but that is sothing else.
    (c) can you use Z2 Pro to make the payments with the phone? I know it has the NTF, but don't you need a finger print scanner for that?
    (d) in the camera settings, when I tested the phone, I could not choose 1:1 for the front camera, only for the selfie camera? Is that really so? I would not see why not.
    (e) in the camera settings, I can choose between 3:4 and 16:9 but I somehow could not find the settings for image resolution. what do I do if I want low resolution photos or very high resolutio photos?
    (f) I assume, you can't charge the phone wirelessly, that would be too much to ask for
    Thanks guys.

    Hi, ileyb
Unfortunately I don't know, what is the "Security Zone" & will be very grateful if you explain a bit about this feature or provide an appropriate link.
In order to switch to "stock android", you have to do the next:
    1) Go to Settings > About phone > Version information, tap 7 times on "Software version number". This will unlock "Developer options" settings section.
    2) Go to Settings > Developer options > Switch System UI Style and enjoy,

    Hi there,
Click anywhere on the Desktop to select Finder. With Finder selected, click on View in the menu bar and then chose *Show View Options*. A window will appear for the Desktop. Check the *Show Item Info* box and then close the window. Now you will be able to see the information underneath the icons on your Desktop.
    Hope this helps,

  • What happens to my local user data? -newbie question sorry

    Hi All,
Firstly apologies if this seems a dumb question, I've scoured the forums but I require something that fits my specific situation.
I've had a (my first) MacBook for about 9 months, built up a fairly healthy local user, setup just how I like it, MobileMe, iTunes, Chrome, iPhoto library, lots of other apps, etc etc and so forth.
I'm setting up a Mac Mini Server, and was wondering what I can do to join the new server, but take all my settings/downloads/iTunes etc with me... I don't want it all stored on the server, but I come from a Micro$oft Windows background. With MS, when you add a PC to a domain, login with the appropriate user account, you have a fresh profile, no settings, no files, no customisations etc etc is this also the case when I hit that Join Network Account server button on my Mac? Will I get a blank fresh account on my Macbook?
I'm guessing this must happen quite often as people start their way into Apple technology and build up a nice healthy local account before branching further into the Apple world...

The two laptops I use everyday have access to all the servers via my network account. It is set so that my user account is listed as having "no home" So I log into the laptop with my local user account with a UID of 501 but access all the network services via the go menu and my network account of the same name but with a UID of 1034.
For all other users in the company, if they are on a laptop, I use network accounts. The machines are managed to ask if the user wants to create a mobile account when they login. For permanently assigned laptop users, the answer is yes. This puts their home on the laptop and ties them to that machine. I use mobile account syncing to make sure their critical data is copied to the server for backup.
By having the machine ask to create the mobile account, users can answer no and login to their network home. The use of the laptop may be needed temporarily if a regular workstation is down.
Once in a while I will need to convert a local account to a network account. While a bit more laborious that setting it up correctly at the beginning, it can be done.
But I never let any user account have the UID of 501. I would set that up as the local admin account I use for installing updates and performing other maintenance. If needed, I would back up the user data and erase and re-install the OS.

  • Follow-up question: Moving Root volume to new disk

When using Disk Utility to do the Restore (complete copy) from old to new, do the Volume Names need to be identical ?
e.g. will restoring from volume "bk250" to volume "bk400" screw up the aliases already on bk250 etc?
    Thanks
