Newest safari forgets homepage

Newest safari does not remember homepage and opens last page even though it was the homepage. All preference settings look correct. How do I get Safari to open with homepage?

Hold down the option key when you quit an app or the shift key when launching an app to prevent Lion from opening "previous" windows.

  • Safari forgets last Google search

    Hi, there's something that's been bugging me since the last release of Safari. Very often - probably 70% of the time - I will search something via the Google bar. If I click on a link and then want to go back to the Google search results, when I press 'back' Safari forgets the Google results page and jumps back to the page I was on before that. If I go into history the Google page is there but it's an annoying bug.
    I haven't tried unistalling and reinstalling Safari yet as this seems to involve reinstalling the OS (or am I wrong?). The bug seemed to survive the last OS mini update...I think. Just wondering if anyone else had encountered this and if you came across any solutions.
    (And yes I know other browsers are available, thank you )

    Deleting the Google search window history is easy. Click on the magnifying glass and there will be an option to Clear Recent Searches at the bottom of the drop-down list.
    Clearing Safari's address window of addresses is a different matter. There is no way to completely clear the list of suggestions or to turn off URL Autocomplete. Autocomplete gets its data from the cache, History, and Bookmarks. The only way to minimize autocomplete is to periodically clear the cache and History and to go through your Bookmarks and delete old and seldom used ones, including those created when Safari was first installed.
    One work-around is to add an extra blank space either before you start typing or when you are done typing in the address. All the various alternatives will then disappear.
    You can add your voice to all the others who want to turn autocomplete off by requesting a toggle in Preferences by sending a feature request via "Report Bugs to Apple" under the Safari menu.

  • Newest Safari and liveconnect woes

    Dear all,
    Part of my site relies on liveconnect, which is ok except for Apple users. Despite all Apple's bragging about its prowess in all matters Java, there seems to be no way at all to reach javascript properties and functions from an applet.
    Nor is it possible to make tapping into an applet from javascript work with any browser, with the possible exception of their own Safari. If you have the Java 1.4.2 plugin, that is, or so Apple claims.
    So I got the plugin, but it seems to no avail. For instead of simply not recognizing an applet as an object, Safari now returns the error that the Object applet does not allow calls. That, however, is simply untrue, as any wintel machine testifies.
    The (uniquely named) applet is retrieved as:
    document.getElementsByName("name_of_the_applet")[0]
    In the applet tag the MAYSCRIPT attribute is present. Including it as MAYSCRIPT="true" or even adding it as a parameter does not make any difference.
    Can liveconnect function on OSX.machines at all (version 10.3.4), or can't Apple cut it at all?
    Thanks for all input,
    Rik
    (p.s. this sort of multidisciplinary question was also posted in the plug-in forum)

    All the essential code was in my original post, it's not that complex. The error reported is exactly as I said:
    "Object does not allow calls."
    To see what happens, check out:
    peptalks.nl/testjava/Applet.html
    There, I put a minimal applet plus some javascript tapping into it: Four functions which should return different parts of the applet. The first three return a variable (string), a string constant returned by a method, and a string constant plus a string parameter from a method, respectively, the fourth switches the background color of the applet between red and yellow. The source code of the applet is at the bottom of this post, the javascript can be seen in the source of liveconnect.html itself.
    This all works nicely on Wintel machines, but nothing works on apple of course, in any browser.
    Another thing: a couple of days ago there was a liveconnect-demo somewhere inside the Apple site itself, which did not seem to work either. Since then, I've tried and tried to find it again, but it seems to have vanished into thin air. All that's left is Apple's repeated and confident but unsubstantiated claim that the newest Safari supports liveconnect.
    Finally, the applet source:
    import java.awt.Color;
    public class Applet extends java.applet.Applet {
    public String testvar = "testvar";
    public String teststr() {
    return "teststr";
    public String teststrparam(String s) {
    return "teststrparam (" + s + ")";
    public void testvoid() {
    if (getBackground() == Color.yellow) setBackground(Color.red);
    else setBackground(Color.yellow);
    repaint();
    public void init() {
    setBackground(Color.red);
    } // end of class

  • Safari missing homepage in Lion

    Upgraded to Lion. Now everytime I quite Safari and reopen my "homepage" is the last website I visited. I have checked all prefrences to make sure new tabs and windows open with my "homepage". If I use the keyboard shortcut to get back to my "homepage" (control, shift, H) my saved homepage is displayed properly. Any thoughts?

    Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
    Quit Safari. Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Launch Safari. If that made a difference, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not move it back to the Preferences folder.
    If that didn't help, go to ~ / Library / Caches / com.apple.Safari/
    Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • Safari Forgets Download Folder

    I have created a Safari downloads folder with a folder action script to automaticaly open certain files on download. The problem is Safari keeps forgetting the folder I set in Preferences and reverting to the Desktop for downloads. I have erased the preference files both in user and general with no effect. OS 10.4.4, nothing particularly weird running except Default Folder and Font Reserve. Thanks

    Why create a folder with an action script? Maybe that's the cause of your problem. Just create one in your finder, put it where ever you want it and set it in your Safari prefs as the default dl-folder and then activate in the same window 'open safe files after downloading', or something like it, cause I'm using the dutch version of Safari. This never gave me any problems.

  • Safari forgets all the windows of the last session if I start it with a link

    On Preferences/General I selected Safari starts with all the windows of the last session and all works this way except for a situation: when I click on a web link when Safari is closed, (i.e. on Mail) and that link starts Safari, it forgets all previous session windows and opens ONLY the link window...
    Can I avoid this behaviour?

    You should be able to:
    Backup the device to the new installation
    Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
    Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
    Restore the device from the backup
    This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
    May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
    When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • Safari forgets some Top Sites after closing

    Hello!
    My Safari always seems to forget the Top Sites I set.
    I have set all twelve Top Sites with my favorite Webpages.
    When I quit Safari and start it again in the last row of Top Sites two of my favorites are gone and have been replaced by other randomly chosen Webpages.
    I already tried to reinstall Safari by deleting the App and loading it again from apple.com.
    I also deletet the TopSite.plist files and tried to reset Safari. None of these things worked.
    Its funny though, that when I take a look inside the .plist the top sites are correct and in the correct order. Safari just doesn't display them correctly.
    Does anyone have an idea? I like the Top Sites feature really a lot but its behavior right now is quite annoying.

    Hi,
    Quit Safari.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.safari.plist file to the Desktop.
    Relaunch Safari. Try Top Sites.
    If that didn't help, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.

  • Safari Forgetting Bookmarks?

    Hello, I have a bit of a bug.
    I had the twitter bar plugin for Safari, But I uninstalled it and then Safari started forgetting bookmarks and it lost some of them.
    I tried deleting the com.apple.safari folder but that didn't work.
    Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to fix this problem?
    Thanks!
    -Benjamin

    Hi Benjamin
    1: make a duplicate of Home/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist so that you don't risk permanently losing any more bookmarks, keep it on the desktop, or some other folder. To the same end - Export your bookmarks via Safari-File-Export Bookmarks.
    2: Using Finder-File-Get Info on Home/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist - check that you have read & write access to it, down in the 'sharing & permissions' section. If not, click the padlock, provide an admin name/pass & change that.
    3: If you've no other 3rd party software installed, perhaps the Home/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist file is corrupted - Quit Safari & trash it (you made a copy, right?) then try adding bookmarks to test things out.
    If bookmarks are still a problem, quit safari again & move Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist to the desktop & try once more.
    If trashing bookmarks.plist did sort things out, now use Safari-File-Import Bookmarks to get your old ones back - loading the file you created in step 1.

  • How to completely remove Safari and reinstall. I don't have Safari on my Mac, yet, it says I can't install the newest Safari because a newer version is already installed... Help?

    Okay. So, Safari was giving me some trouble, right? So, I thought I would delete it and reinstall it. I never had a problem doing so before, right? So, why not? I did, and then, when I tried to reinstall it, it tells me I have a newer version already installed. Can someone help me out here?

    Hi..
    Are you running Lion v10.7 by chance even though your profile indicates v10.6.8   ??
    I ask because you can only reinstall apps using Lion Recovery
    Much better to ask for help with Safari here before trying to delete the app and reinstall.
    Is the Safari app still in the Trash by chance?

  • Newest Safari for Yosemite? I have 8.0.4 but it doesn't work

    Safari very flakey. Locks up, can't access app store at all, have tried from Firefox. Want to reinstall safari but unable to access.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Password reminder: Make safari forget "Never for this site" setting

    Hello,
    Today by mistake I clicked on the button "never remember passwords for this site" by mistake. How can I revert back to the old settings? It's the login page of my company's webmail site and find it extremely annoying to enter a long address now everytime I need to log in (I get logged out every 15 mins).
    There are no security issues, by the way. I'm the only one on my computer and always locked the screen when aaway.
    thanks.

    Hi Jose
    Go to your Utilities folder and open Keychain Access. Enter the site in the search panel, then delete the relevant ones. Quit Keychains. Back to Safari. Open the site, then answer the password prompt.

  • Help! Safari forgets last session when Roboform install opens Safari

    I use Roboform alongside Keychain to store passwords and Personal information. Roboform updates require me to close Safari to complete, so I close Safari before updating. After the update installation has completed, Roborm opens it's post-install Web page, which opens in Safari. The post-install page is the only page open when this happens, no matter how many tabs I had open when I shut down Safari.
    To try and get the session back, I close Safari and reopen it. Then I go to History and note that both "open last closed window" and "reopen all windows from last session" options are greyed out.
    Is there any way to save the session before the upgrade so that I can restore it after the Roboform upgrade completes? Being able to save a group of tables to a named session (like mylastsession ) would be helpful. It's really irritating and happens about once a month.
    It's one reason that I'd really like to get rid of Roboform, except that it's cross-platform, cross-browser,  and has a lot of features that Keychain doesn't have (yet).
    Thanks in advance!
    Safari  7.0.4

    That's good.
    Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
    Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
    Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
    If that doesn't help, Open a Finder window select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder.
    Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari.

  • Safari forgets cookies

    Is anyone else having a problem with Safari suddenly dropping all the cookies? I can't figure out why it is doing it, it seems to happen randomly (to my point of view).

    zolala wrote:
    Your questions are right. You have to know all circumstances, to get a picture.
    But, I have totally opposite problem.
    After using my Safari (3.1.1.) on my MacBook, Mac OS X, Version 10.4.11, Processor 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Memory 1 GB 667 MHz), I go to RESER SAFARI, where I checked it ALL: Clear history, Empty the cache, Remove all cookies, etc.
    After reseting, I quit Safari. Later on, when I start Safari again (have EMPTY PAGE as Home Page), before I go to ANY site, I check the cookies, AND, there are ALL there, from previous session! I send several time this complaint to "Report Bugs to Apple" -- no answer.
    This is disturbing.... Any comments?
    It's possible your cookies file has become corrupted or locked. Quit Safari and look in ~/Library/Cookies (where ~ is your home folder) and put the cookies.plist file in the trash. Then relaunch and check to see if the cookies panel is empty. If all is well then try emptying the trash. Older versions of Safari stored cookies in the com.apple.Safari.plist file located in ~/Library/Preferences. You could also try putting that file in the trash.
