Newly burned DVD won't play last chapter

I'm new to iDVD, so this may be a dumb question. I just burned my first DVD and when I put it into my DVD player it plays all but the last chapter of my menu. Any ideas?

First test is to load it into your Mac and see if it plays with Macs "DVD Player" utility.
Let us know whether it plays the disc with or without the same problems.

IDVD won't play last chapter

I just burned a DVD from iMovie 08 and it won't play the last chapter. It shows a red no entry symbol (circle with diagonal). The iMovie was about an hour 9 minutes long and at one point during the burn it said that it was too long. Is that the problem?

Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)

You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

Burned DVD won't play in DVD player?

I burned a video I purchased on itunes to a DVD using Finder (dragging and dropping onto disk). It burned fine, but won't play in my DVD player. It will play on my computer though.
Are there different formats you can burn it in? Am I not using the correct format?
I am using a DVD-RW disk.

In iTunes you create a Playlist from the tracks you want and then select it and 'Burn Playlist to disc', just dragging the files in the Finder is just copying the files across and not making a playable CD.

Burns DVDs, WON'T play commercial DVDs

So I seem to be having the REVERSE problem from everyone else. My iMac G4 (17", 1GHz processor, 512 MB RAM), which I just bought for a piddling $200, will play and burn CDs / CD-RWs just fine. It will also correctly identify blank DVDs that I stick in the drive. It will BURN DVDs. In a few hours, I'll be able to tell you if it will read data DVDs.
The ONLY THING it won't do is play COMMERCIAL DVDs. I pop in a video DVD, it spins up, tries to read it, then spits it back out. Now, I know the not playing DVDs problem is not a unique one, but in reading on these forums, that seems to always be a symptom of the DVD laser diode having gone bad, which is certainly NOT the case here (as it's merrily burning away).
My GUESS would be that--somehow--my installation is missing the CSS library necessary to decode commercial DVDs. I had a similar problem getting my iPod Touch to talk to iTunes. But is that even possible? And, if so, how do I go about rectifying this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I read somewhere else on this forum about someone having a similar problem to mine. He took the iMac to a service depot, but when he got it there, they couldn't replicate the problem. He took it home, and HE couldn't replicate the problem. As in, it was now fixed. Turns out that just unplugging the unit gave the Superdrive a chance to "reset."
So I unplug my iMac to test this out, as well as to see if I can unscrew the access panel to determine how easy it'd be to upgrade its RAM. Well, I could only get one of the screws out, but when I plugged it back in, turned it back on and popped in the collector's edition of "2001: A Space Odyssey," DVD Player came up and began playing the disc! Never has "Thus Sprach Zarathustra" sounded so amazing!

Burning DVD, won't play

I have used itunes to burn a DVD of my music. I can't play these files in my car, which plays MP3 files, but apparently not the M4P files that itunes copies to a burned DVD. When I copy the same files to a CD audio disc they work just fine.
Funny thing is I received a DVD burned from the previous owner and it works just fine. No idea if he took his files from itunes. Anyone have a solution?

m4p files are protected files files from iTunes music store. These cannot be played by any car stereo I know of. You need iTunes or iPod to play m4p files.
The DVD that works probably contains only mp3 files.

Burned dvd won't play on my dvd player.

Help! I downloaded FREE DVD creator from the APP store. Followed directions on how to burn DVD. Imported video from iMovie ( vacation video ), burned it onto DVD and the playback on my DVD player is very jittery, stutters, and sometimes freezes. The video format was m4v. and the other format was .mov. Am I doing something wrong? Did I miss something? Very frustrating spending all that time editing the video only to have it not play on my DVD player. Do I need to get iDVD or a 3rd party app? Please help.

Best place to ask is in iDVD forum - but still -
There are lot's of factors determine the resulting DVD quality
Stutter and jittery etc use to be due to
• material is in different frames per second (PAL vs NTSC)
I start with finding out in what format the DVD is supposed to be
PAL (25fps) = EU
NTSC (29.97fps) = US
Most DVD-players in EU can handle both - Few in US can do so
• .m4v or .mov etc are no Video-Codecs but containers - Open the movie file in QuickTime-Player and then open Inspector [cmd+I] to find out Video format and frame-rate
I use JES_Deinterlacer to get all my material into same standard then Import it into iDVD (set to same standard).
By letting iMovie or iDVD do this conversion usually results in STUTTERING and JITTERY results. JES_Deinterlacer does this so much better - AND IT'S FREE !
• Using Cheap DVD brands as Memorex, NoNames etc - usually don't work at all (for VIDEO-DVDs - Data-DVD usually works but they do not play in any DVD-player)
I only use Verbatim
• DVD type used matters - DVD+/-RW usually doesn't work or gives a disastrous result. DVD+R plays on more modern DVD-players - BUT DVD-R plays on older ones too.
I use DVD-R
• BURN SPEED - Full speed usually results in DVDs that doesn't play or only on a few devices.
I always set this down to x2 or x4
So You see there are multiple reasons why this can go wrong.

Burned dvds won't play

my PB suddenly produces dvds that aren't accepted by my DVD/TV. I get a disc error message. The old dvds I made months back still play ok, and so do commercial ones, but my new ones maybe play once, but generally get rejected.
I was thinking that if I could decrease the default burn speed to x1 (the default is x4), that might help, but I can't figure out how to do this. (my iMac flatscreen burns at x1 and its discs are playable.)
are there any routines that I should run to get successful dvd burning back?

I also was having trouble suddenly with burning dvd's as well and after searching on the www found a link to a page on the apple site where they explained that some matshita superdrives were producing bad discs when the burn speed was too fast.
My drive is a matshita dvd-r uj-816 if you type it into google and do a search you will get some info or go to http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/10/24/applesuperdriveglitch/ or http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302565
I reduced my burn speed to x4 and have had no problems since.
I'm using Popcorn to burn dvd's and you can specify the burn speed in the advanced settings options box.

Burned DVD won't play on DVD player

I have downloaded a 22 minute video that I would like to burn to a DVD to play in my DVD player. I have attempted on both DVD-R and DVD+R. They burn to the disc but will not play on the DVD player. The error message states that playback may not be available on this disk. I have used the windows support search to problem solve on my own but have had no success. I have ensured that I am selecting the CD/DVD player option to utilize the Mastered format. I have gone into my option and have no filters on. I have the video format on NTSC since I am from Pennsylvania/US. I have not tried to burn it on slow or medium speed because it does burn to the DVD without problem it just won't playback on the DVD player. What do you recommend as my next course of action for troubleshooting.

I would suspect that the video is not DVD Mpeg2 compliant. Depending on the DVD player, some will play other formats, also. If there are no video authoring programs on the computer, try Windows Movie Maker (free) to see if the video needs too be converted to DVD Mpeg2 standards.

Burned DVD won't play on outside player but OK with Toast

Here we go again!
After scanning the other posts I still cannot find anything to make my problem go away.
Situation: New G5 Quad and all of HD Suite installed.
Have gone through DVDPro advanced tutorial OK.
Burned to Memorex DVD-R media.
Plays great on G5, and a G3 that I still have, with DVD Player app.
But after trying disc on 3 different outside players they still come up with "unreadable disk" or "bad disk".
Players are relatively new - one mf'd within the last year in a TV combo, and the other, my favorite, Apex AD1200.
I figure if something will play on ANY machine, it will play on the Apex.
I have burned the same file to Toast 7 using the DVD Video from VIDEO_TS option and have been able to play it on my Apex with no problem.
However, inserting this "Toasted" disk into my computer gets me everything except the audio.
I have talked to Support and they do not cover this problem, but pointed me to a page on the Apple website for deleting preferences, which I have done with no effect, and have done a clean re-install of the application, again with no change in what I am getting when re-burning disks.
Anyone have any ideas as to what needs to be done to make this application work properly?

I posted this to the BMUG website subsequent to chasing down the suggestions offered at that time.
So far the response has been ZERO . . .
At the March 20 meeting I brought up my problems with selecting the correct media for burning my DVD Pro files so that they would play well across a range of dvd players out in the real world - approaching what you expect when you buy a commercially produced DVD movie.
I’m running the G5 Quad, and have the Final Cut Studio HD package.
I am simply looking for some guidance from Apple. Is there a favorite media that has been settled on by Apple, or Apple employees by word of mouth?
One of the attendees stated that he had no problems with his machine or disks that he produced. I wish to communicate with him as to exactly what he is doing and what he is using to be problem-free.
Another attendee suggested I contact the drive manufacturer and ask what media they recommend. Problem is, there is nothing in the Apple profiler that tells me who manufactured this drive. All I can glean from my profiler is the model number, which is HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B. Other forums suggest it is a Hitachi. My own investigation yields the probable manufacturer as LG Electronics. They do not show that EXACT model number (the last 4 digits are slightly different) in their lineup, so I am assuming it is a special build for Apple. So much for that line of inquiry.
I initially used DVD-R media. This played back OK on my computer DVD player, and about 2 out of 15 other DVD players I sampled. Using the same media and file, I burned a disk using Toast 7 on the superdrive. It played fine on three players it did not play on before. I only used the ones that I had immediate access to.
When I switched to 2 different DVD+R media I got the same results as the “Toasted” -R disk.
Why is it OK with Toast on the superdrive, but not with DVDPro on the superdrive???
There is no question about the correctness of the file itself. It is the completed Advanced Tutorial for DVD Pro.
I cannot proceed with projects I have until I can be certain that I am not producing coasters for the majority of the dvd readers out in the real world. I purchased all this gear just so that I could do what it promises can be done with it.

My burned DVD won't play on DVD player or VLC

Hi all,
I have a DVD that was burned by a colleague that will not play on any of the computers in my office. It opens automatically in DVD player and freezes on the title (there is no menu on the DVD) with the words "PLAY" in the bottom right corner and when I press play or skip or anything, either nothing happens or there is a "not permitted" message. The same thing happens when I try to play it on VLC and when it won't open in Quicktime. I have no clue what this could be as it plays on my computer at home and my Xbox and my colleague tested it on her own computer before she sent it over. Please help! This is incredibly frustrating.
BTW - when I double click the DVD it opens to two folders - AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS but when I try to open any of the files, it just says there is no application to open the file and I wouldn't know which application to pick so yea. I'm screwed.

The most common origin to this are:
• Brand of DVD used - was to Cheap e.g. Memorex, NoName etc - known problem makers.
• Type of DVD used - DVD+/-RW are a NO NO, DVD+R plays well on newer DVD-players - I use DVD-R
• BURN SPEED - I always set this down to x2 or max x4 - and it's so much better
• Dusty DVD burner - I run a Cleaning DVD from time to others - NO LIQUID but the ones with brushes
• Material feed to iDVD - doesn't suit - iDVD tries many Video-Codecs, Audio and Photo file formats it really can not handle = A BAD DVD.
• Very low - FREE SPACE on Boot hard disk (I never go less than 25GB)
Usually one of these or all of them results in disaster.

Burned DVD won't play on another Mac

Hey folks.
I just finished my first iDVD project on my iBook and burned it onto a Maxell DVD-R (16x). I opted to include the picture files on the DVD. The project is 9 slideshows from iPhoto with accompanying music out of iTunes (both my own and purchased). The DVD works fine on my laptop and also plays fine on my DVD player. I can access both the slideshows as well as the image files.
But, when I tried to play the DVD on my parents iMac PowerPC G4, it doesn't work. I put the DVD in, it clicks for about a minute or so, then ejects the disk. Nothing appears on the screen or anything. I haven't had the opportunity yet to try it on a Windows computer yet. I wanted to make copies to give to my family, but I am getting frustrated.
Any suggestions?
Oh, one other question, if you don't mind. I burned one copy out of iDVD (set at best quality), then attempted to make a disk image of it to make other copies. It wouldn't make the disk image, telling me that there was an input/output error. I had unintentionally also burned a copy out of iDVD at best performance, and that one will make a disk image. What is an input/output error?

The trouble with iDVD is that it doesn't give you any direct control over burn speed. Disc burned on low quality media and/or with high burn speeds have lots of burn errors that can make them diffcult to play. Maxell is good media, but the only way to control your burn speed is by burning a disc image to writable media at a low speed (4x or lower (and I use 2x)) with Apple's Disk Utility or Roxio's Toast.
It appears the disc made with 'Best Quality' has more errors than the disc made with 'Best Performance' and can't be read. Use the 'Best Performance' disc to make a disk image file and be sure to burn all the additional copies at 4x or lower speed.
BTW, despite the names Apple has given the two modes, if your content is short enough, 'Best Performance" actually gives better image quality than 'Best Quality'.

On my Mac (vers 10.7.5) I use Disk Utilites to burn a DVD. The DVD won't play on the Mac but will play on my Windows PC and on a DVD player. A DVD created on my PC will play on the Mac. Any ideas why this is happening?

I used iDVD to create an IMG file
You created the video DVD, the IMG file, with iDVD and just burned it with Disk Utility. As Klaus1 pointed out Disk Utility can't create video DVDs.

Trouble with my newly burned DVD's

I am having trouble with my newly burned DVD's which are produced using iDVD. They seem to play a couple of times then start freezing (usually on DVD players). I played one last night on my mac and it made a horrible grinding noise which you could hear slowing until the disc and movie froze completely. This is causing me much concern as I am burning DVD's as part of my wedding video business for newly weds.
I have a few questions
1. Is there a manufacturer that produces high quality DVD's to ensure my clients get the best.
2. Is there a chance that my mac DVD burner might be glitchy?
3. Does my mac DVD player/ burner need cleaned regularily?
4. Is there external DVD burner that I can buy that would ensure high quality DVD burning process?
5. I print DVD covers to stick onto the DVD's. Does this reduce quality or effect the playing process in anyway?

• I set down burn speed in iDVD (x4) to get as few burn errors possibly

• Mine does - I run a Cleaning DVD from time to time

• Yes but I've doubt that the result will be any better or worse - MY OPINION - I've got a ForeMac DVD burner as last resort.

• NEVER PUT ANY LABLE OR STICKY DEVICE ON ANY DVD or CD - as they will lose in stability and result will be a MAL-Functioning DVD (or most probably not working at all - especially DVDs)
I do - use printable DVDs and use printer that accepts DVDs. They look as Pro Quality DVDs

I have discovered, no thanks to Samsung techs, what the problem is, and it might be revealing for others, as well. It seems that DVD Player, which is the app Apple provides in OS x for (naturally) playing videos, doesn't work with external drives if the computer has an internal drive – even when, as in my case, the internal drive is dead.
I have learned, however, of the existence of a couple of alternative, free applications that run video and audio disks with external optical drives, and one of them, at least (VLC), seems to be widely acclaimed. Does anyone know whether bypassing DVD Player could be a bad idea? There were some gripes from one or two reviewers about awkwardness with playing audio DVDs with iTunes, but I'm not sure what they meant when they said that you have to click on individual items in a selection. Would that mean, for example, having to click on each movement of a Mozart trio? That I couldn't play an entire album's contents of another kind of music without clicking on each song?
Getting the internal optical drive replaced would be prohibitive, even if the parts could be obtained, so I guess I'm stuck trying to deal with the external drive I have and finding the best replacement for DVD Player that I can find. The interesting thing is that the drive works beautifully with a MacBook Air I tried it with, so I guess that is because the Air doesn't have an internal drive?
Wouldn't you think that Samsung techs would know all this? The one I spoke to told me to make sure that my system preference for CDs and DVDs was set to open automatically with DVD Player and sent me all kinds of FAQs, plus a way to get an RMA number for a return. Not a word about difficulties with Macs having an existing internal drive. And all after spending a very long time talking with me about what was going on, what the error message was, and so on. I guess the message hasn't gotten to them.

Short content DVD won't play

I've had this problem for years, and I've finally decided to ask. Every time I make a short content DVD with under about 10 minutes of content, my finished Encore DVD won't play in some players. The amount of data written by Encore is visibly small on the disc. I've noticed however, that if I take the same content, and master it in Nero rather than Encore, the content on the disc (burn area) is much larger and it plays just fine on every player. Is there anything within Encore that I can change to eliminate this problem?

"Probably" the reason nero doesn't have the problem is the same as for ImgBurn: it automatically pads the total size. I never remember to pad tiny disks anymore, because I have become dependent on the autopad!
Edit: I see John's second past! That's the other imgburn advantage here: let it figure out the addition!
