Newly captured clips need rendering

Hi,
I'm having a problem with a project, with the clips I'm capturing they need to be rendered before I can view them in the sequence.
This has only started happening today, previously there were no problems, the clips I've already captured play fine, it's only new clips that need rendering for no apparent reason.
What do you think the problem is?
G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

you have a mismatch between your captured clips and the sequence settings.
something has changed in your capture settings since before when it was working
select one of the new clips in the browser (or timeline) and press Cmd-9
take a look under the Format tab ... what Compressor is it using? What Frame Rate? note down all thesed settings
now select one of the older (good) clips in the browser (or timeline) and press Cmd-9
take a look under the Format tab ... what Compressor is that one using? What Frame Rate? note down all these settings
... compare the two lists, somewhere there will be a mismatch
you need to change your capture settings to match the older clips settings
equally, you could select the sequence in the browser (or just select the timeline window) and press Cmd-0...what are the settings here?
these settings need to match the properties of your source media, otherwise you will need to render
to change your capture settings, the easiest option is to use Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup..
just choose the correct setup from the list and then recapture the new footage

  • Newly Captured Clips Need Rendering--why?

I've seen similar questions posted about things needed rendering when it seems they shouldn't...but none of the answers seem to help me and none are exactly the same, so...
    Here's my dilemna:
I've been using Final Cut Pro on a G4 Power Mac with a 1.25gig processor and 1 gig of RAM and it's been fine for my purposes. Even though I've been using high def video, newly caputres clips don't need rendering until I start working with them (as they shouldn't).
BUT...I've tried installing the same software on both a MacMini and a PowerBook G4 (each having the same speed processor) and with both alternate computers a newly captured high def clip will appear with a red bar over it, I won't be able to preview anything but a still, and rendering will take about 7 minutes per half minute of video. My question is why?
It's primarly the PowerBook I want to get going on Final Cut so I can edit wherever I am, but I can't work with it if I need to render every fresh clip. Two small differences : (1) My PowerBook only has 756 megs of RAM as opposed to a full gig on the PowerMac. (2) I'd done other projects on the PowerMac with FinalCutExpress before getting Pro, so maybe there was a codec already installed on that one that I need on the PowerBook.
If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. It seems like what works with one 1.25 gig processor should work the same with similar chips on different computers, but it doesn't...

Quite right, David (and Jerry). My problem was indeed a matter of the setup not matching the formatting of the clips. I had a hard time understanding that this was the problem because EVERYTHING seemed to work on the PowerMac and NOTHING on the PowerBook (or MacMini which I set up with FinalCut to see if the PowerBook was to blame.)
I guess it was just a matter of being lucky that the PowerMac's setup was correct for what I was doing and unlucky that the PowerBook's was not. Anyone experiences similar confusion may also be helped by a Shane tutorial I found in a separate thread--

  • Help: all my capturing clips need to be rendered. why?

I have successfully captured all my video clips from mini dv tapes in a Canon XM1 into final cut pro 4. However if i place any of these clips onto the timeline they need rendering before they will play. This has never happened before, usually only transitions etc need rendering. what have i done wrong? please please help, this is very urgent!

yes it does (your sequence settings are diffrent from your clip settings)
you'll have to open all your clips, and set them to zero -there is a quicker way in your sequence settings, but I'm not to sure wihch setting to go for.
Actually... you'de probably be better off trying to chance the sequence setting to match your clip setting - go to: sequence/settings and play around there.
let me know how you get on. I'm going to see if I can get the correct setting figured out for you to

  • Every clip needs rendering once in timeline

This is a new problem. I dealt with my last short project by constantly rendering. This is a bigger project, so I really need to get back to the old way of doing things where you can drop a clip into the timeline and it's ready to go, and you can slide it this way and that without re-rendering.
Why are all my clips needing to be rendered when I place them into the timeline???
    Thanks.

#28 Having to render every clip in the timeline
Shane's Stock Answer #28: When I put a clip in the timline, I have to render it before it will play. Why?
Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.

  • Rendering - clips need rendering when they shoudn't

I am working on a new sequence on FCE 3.5.1 (HD imported from sony hdr-hc5 - no previous problems). Now whenever I move a clip from one track to another (whether on top of another clip in another track or not) it requires rendering and when I move it back to a track where there are no clips on tracks above or below it it needs rendering (even though all I have done is move it and haven't done anything else to the clip at all). This didn't use to happen and as far as I know I haven't changed any of the settings. It does eventually auto-render but by my reckoning it shouldn't rendering at all just because the clip has been moved. They never used to

    Any suggestions?

    Hi Al
    Aha.
Sequence is 720x576 DV-PAL. Clip is 1440x1080 aple intermed codec.
So, the sequence is wrong. Is there any way I can change the properties of the sequence without starting all over again as I have got some way down the line on the project and would like to keep the progress made to date.
Thanks for the quick response by the way.

  • All my HD clips need rendering when first put on the timeline -why?

hello people, I've captured loads of HD from sony A1E and a bit of DVcam from canon XL2 , the dvcam stuff is fine, but all the HD needs to be rendered before I can see it in the canvas, I went along with it but now no more space! Is it to do with the easy setup capture settings? i set it to 1080i50 25fps, maybe my camera runs a faster fps, could it be having to convert it before i see it?
    please help
    mark

Your settings are obviously for DV, as your DV footage needs no rendering. When you choose the HDV Easy Setup and create a new sequence, your HDV footage will fit just fine, but then your DV footage will need to be rendered. After you resize it...because initially it will be smaller in the frame. Highlighting the clip and going to MODIFY>Fit to Sequence will make it the right size.

  • Capture Format Needs Rendering?

I have a Sony HDV-HCR1 HD Camcorder. I am capturing HDV1080i with no problems. However, when I drag my clips to the timeline, it will not play unless I "render" it. Man, this is double-duty. Is there a setting where I can say, "this is the codec I want to use" ?

Well, if no disrespect is intended, you need to rephrase your answer. I help in usability testing for a major GIS software company, and one thing you need to do in your manual is provide proper QuickStart instructions. I failed to find that. Also, you have to be a bit of a genius to figure out what format your camera is in the first place. If you think it was easy understanding that my Sony was HDV1080i60 48--it wasn't. The fact is, I could not get my camera to be recognized for one hour. Then another hour for the rendering problem.
I do not see why, within Firewire specs, a videocam or transport could send a code that will alert the computer the format output? As soon as you plug in your camera's Firewire, a small code IDs the coming footage as HDV1080i60 48 coming from a Sony HDV-HC1--automatically. These are computers. This should be easy!

  • Rendering Idle but clip needs rendering

My clip shows it needs to render, but the Rendering Background Task is idle.  Preferences set to start in 4 seconds. (I changed it to see if that had any impact on getting the footage to render.)

    Any help appreciated; Thanx

Try turning off back ground render. Then select and Ctl-R. It still may not render. If it doesn't, select the project and from the File menu choose Delete Computer-Generated Project File.

  • I have converted m2ts files to .mov to edit in FCE (4.0.1) When I drag the clips into the timeline they need rendering, as much as a minute for a 30 sec. clip. Is this normal? I am using OS 10 . My easy setup is apple intermediate codec, 720p30. Any help

I have converted m2ts files to .mov in streamclip,  for editing in fce 4.0.1. When I drag them into the fce timeline the clips need rendering, as much as a minute for a 30 second clip. Is this normal? My OS is 10.6.8. My easy setup in fce is apple intermediate codec 720p30. Any advice to avoid the rendereng would be helpful. Ann

To what codec, frame size & frame rate did you convert the files in Streamclip?
If it isn't AIC 720p30, you'll need to render.

  • Project needs rendering again after it was all rendered?

Okay I'm working in a project that is over one hour long and I finished color correcting all the clips and let that render a couple days ago. Today I open the project and all the clips need rendering again indicated by an orange bar on top of the entire project. What's up with that? It's not like rendering just takes a couple of seconds. This is going to take hours again. I'm trying this Final Cut Pro X but I'm still very uncertain about it. Seems the learning curve is taking me much longer than if I were just editing it back in the old standard Final Cut Pro. Any advice help thanks

I updated. But I just figured it out. I had made a copy of the cc project and that proj was unrendered. now I'm back in the original proj. and it's all rendered as it should be . My bad

  • Captured clips that need rendering ?

    Hello,
Anyone have any idea why my clips all need rendering after capture.
Its just DV Pal shot 16:9 - what could the problem be ?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    Peter

... what could the problem be ?
The sequence settings don't match the clips. If they do, you don't need to render.
If you have FCP 6 or 7, create a new sequence (doesn't matter what easy preset you use) and drop one of the captured clips into it. When FCP asks you if you want to change the sequence settings to match the clip, say yes.
If you are working on FCP 5 or earlier, create a new sequence using the DV/PAL 16:9 anamorphic preset. If that is what you really captured, you should not have to render.

  • Sequence is DV-PAL, clips are DV-PAL, but Audio needs rendering in Timeline

    Hello everyone.
I'm just getting started with FCE 4. Here's my problem: i set up FCE with the easy configuration to work in DV-PAL. Then i copied some clips i had captured with iMovie 06 from an old project file to another folder on my external firewire harddrive. I then imported these clips into FCE. These clips are also in DV-PAL, since they came from a DV-camcorder. The videotrack is fine, but the audiotracks are only played back in the viewer but not in the canvas/timeline. All i get there are the beeps, which indicate they have to be rendered. If i do render them, the audiotracks are played back in the timeline as well, but from what i've read in this forum and elsewhere, rendering shouldn't be necessary at all when the sequence and videoclips have the same format. Any ideas why the audiotracks need rendering?
    Thanks and regards, Thorsten

    Hi there!
Fortunately, importing iMovie footage was only some kind of quick way to get at least some footage into FCE to experiment with. I only got FCE a few days ago and had no new Footage on tape, so i thought i might as well use already captured video files. I know better now and won't mix up any projects. Although i have some very useful plug-ins for iMovie like the gee three image stabilization. That's something that (as far as i know) FCE can't do. So i do think about using both programs. Not on whole projects, but probably on single clips. Like working on shaky footage in iMovie, then exporting it as a single clip in QuickTime so that FCE can work with it. Could be a little too much hassle, though. I'll see when i try it.
    Best regards,
    Thorsten

  • Do clips need to be rendered before exporting project to video camera?

I am in the process of exporting an Imovie project back to my video camera for storage on a tape. When I start the export process I get a message that says clips need to be rendered prior to exporting. When I click the button to render clips Imovie goes through the process of rendering the clips and after several minutes the Imovie project starts to export to the camera and runs for about 2 seconds and the Imovie quits.
Imovie also gives the option of not rendering the clips.
Do i need to render the clips before exporting them to my video camera?
iMac4,1   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Intel Core Duo, 1.83 GHz

Does the project reside on an external drive? If so, make sure the drive uses the Mac OS Extended disk format, which iMovie requires.

The crashes are most likely occurring because of external factors, not because of a flawed rendering routine. These can include the wrong disk format, QuickTime add-ons and obsolete iMovie plug-ins.

Do i need to render the clips before exporting them to my video camera?
It may depend on what type of clips they are. If they are photos imported with the Ken Burn checkbox turned OFF — which are not rendered as they are imported — iMovie will ask to render them. Do NOT allow iMovie to render the photos at this time for there's a bug that adds lots of jaggies to the images, reducing their quality.

  • Why do my clips indicate rendering needed when exporting?

So I have noticed this before but until now, it's never been a problem. I have rendered "all" for my entire project but when I go to export, some of my clips have red bars, indicating they need rendering. Obviously, I can't render them again because I'm exporting. Maybe it makes no difference, but on my current project, several of my stills show weird color or opacity effects in my exported video. In the past, I think I remembered the plugin Alex 4D vignette causing problems, so I unapplied the filter to my clip and re-rendered the entire sequence.
Hopefully it's not a hardware or software issue. Just not sure about the whole rendering thing...
    Thanks,
    Bob

Do the Render Items have check marks against them in the Sequence>Render All menu?
If there is no check mark then no rendering occurs on that particular item, in effect you have told FCE not to render it.
Green bars mean it will play in real time but you should still render.
In the FCE>Sequence Menu you will find the Mix Down option, always Mix Down just prior to exporting.
You must be exporting as a Quicktime Conversion?
Exporting as a Quicktime Movie will give you the exact properties of the FCE Sequence.

  • Why does it need rendering anytime I move / add a 'standard' clip?

Im spending a lot of time rendering standard DV footage, even when i simply add a new clip of change an existing one, it seems to want rendered all the time.....any ideas
(im new to FCP, so the answer is probably easy....forgive my ignorance...)
    cheers

Assuming your problem is that the sequence and clip settings don't match, the way this usually happens is that the editor creates a new project, THEN changes the Easy Setup. Then captures clips and drops them into Sequence 1.
Problem is, Sequence 1 was auto created before the Easy Setup was changed, and so it has the settings that were in place before the Easy Setup was changed.
The correct procedure, after closing all existing projects, is to FIRST change the Easy Setup, THEN create a new project. The sequence that is created with the new project will have the correct settings for the clips you're about to create.
For now, choose the DV PAL Easy Setup, then create a new sequence. Drop your DV PAL clips into the new sequence, and you'll have a better go of it, I think.
