Newly installed iPhoto 08 hangs on startup

Just installed iLife 08 from a family pack w/4 unused licenses. iMovie didn't update because my G4 is incompatible but everything else did. I ran Software Update and it now says everything's up to date. Also repaired permissions.
When I start iPhoto, I get a dialogue box that asks "Do you want to use iPhoto when you connect your digital camera?", the iPhoto window appears, saying "Loading photos..." and showing the timer wheel, and a progress window appears that says "Examining photo library...". Then, I get the beachball and that's it. Activity Monitor shows it's "Not responding."
Based on [this 12/20/08 thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8655758&#8655758], I realized I'd directly (i.e., via drag and drop) moved some photos out of the iPhoto Library recently and this might be the cause. So I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager and ran its Rebuild Library function. This created a Rebuilt Library (containing only com.apple.iPhoto.plist and iPhotoLock.data) and launched iPhoto, which did exactly what it's done before. I've also tried moving the iPhoto Library to the Trash, leaving only the Rebuilt Library, and launching iPhoto. Same result.
I wouldn't mind losing the old library if I must because I have copies of all the photos elsewhere. I just want to get iPhoto working again but can't figure out how.

iPhoto creates an iPhoto Library folder in /Users/username/Libraries/Pictures.
Well actually that’sin Users/ Username/Pictures / iPhoto Library Folder , but no matter.
The internal structure of the Library is very different in iPhoto 08 - I‘ll come to that in a moment.
So, try this:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' see if the app will actually create a Library for you.
Assuming it does:
I have another nested folder that's structured and named as I like, containing all the photos I care about.
To recreate this folder structure in iPhoto, start at the bottom of your hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Source (or left-hand) pane in iPhoto. Iphoto will import the pics and create an Album from there. You can then create the Enclosing Folders in iPhoto (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to the Folder. In this way you can quickly recreate your folder system
a: To use *Photoshop with iPhoto*: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
(BTW this was true of iPhoto 5 too)
b: The Structure of the iPhoto Library Folder is *very different* in iPhoto 08 and later. With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to see inside the Library folder? Go to this Library you‘ve made and right click on the icon. From the resulting menu select ‘Show Package Contents’ and a finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Remember: iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
How to +acces your files+ in iPhoto...
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Newly installed Iphoto 9.1.1 wont open

I'm using the latest MAcMini with 10.6.7.  I just installed iPhoto 9.1.1 but it will not open.  Top menu bar appears but nothing else.  What is wrong ?

Tell us what happens when you try?

  • Why isn't newly installed hard drive available for startup?

    Here's what I did:
    1. Backed up Macbook Pro data to external drive.
    2. Installed new hard drive in Macbook Pro
    3. Put old drive in hd enclosure
    4. Connected old drive in enclosure to Macbook Pro via USB
    4. Formatted new drive using Disk Utilities from old drive.
OK, everything seems to be fine and the new drive icon is on the desktop BUT the new drive is NOT available as a startup disc. It works as a regular disc as far as transferring files, but doesn't show up in the "select disc for startup" window. What's wrong? Thanks.
(I'm using good ol' Snow Leopard.)

    You did something incorrectly:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Just installed iPhoto 8, library suddenly corrupted - how can I recover?

    Newly installed iPhoto 8.
Pop up says "Your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup."
I haven't had time to make a backup since I just installed the iPhoto 8. This pop-up has appeared for TWO separate libraries.
Is there a problem with iPhoto 8, or is there a work around (re-install?), or is there a way to rescue my 40 gigs of photos?
    all ears
    Ben

I wonder what the 'official' way of backing up my iPhoto library would be? Just dragging the master iPhoto Library file to another folder\drive?
That will do it - and then using a back up utility to keep it current. Just make sure that whatever you choose is able to parse the iPhoto Package File.

  • Firefox stopped working and hangs upon startup

First, a problem with iTunes - could not access the iTunes store. Uninstalled iTunes and re-installed, then Firefox hung up, had to close with Task Manager. After that Firefox hangs on startup. Have uninstalled and re-installed Firefox, still hangs on startup. Using Windows 7 OS.

Firefox will not load to start in safe mode - it is just a blank white screen with no radio buttons or icons on it and the circling icon for loading.
I deleted my old profile and uninstalled Firfox and tried downloading again, but the same problem exists. I am currently using IE as my browser, but prefered Firefox (when it worked). It seems the new version is the problem.

  • Newly installed Premiere Elements 12 quits at startup, on Mac.

Newly installed Premiere Elements 12 quits repeatedly at startup. Mac OS 10.9

    pastorok
Please refer to your other thread on Adobe contact information for my comments on that.
It might be a good idea to contact Adobe via its Adobe Chat to discuss "Downloading, Installing, and Setting Up". This does not prohibit you from continuing your Premiere Elements 12 issues here. The positive part about the Adobe contact is that, with the latest version, it may offer the opportunity for remote troubleshooting of your computer and the issue; whereas that is not possible in this user to user forum.
Lots of avenues to pursue...the usual drill...
    a. Problem antivirus and firewalls disabled?
    b. Running program from User Account with Administrative Privileges as well as Run As Administrator (from right click of desktop icon and Run As Administrator selection)?
    c. Latest version of QuickTime installed on computer with Premiere Elements 12?
    d. Have you ever gotten the program opened long enough to update it from 12 to 12.1?
    e. Video card/graphics card driver up to date according to web site of manufacturer of the card?
Please update us on your progress when you get the chance.
    Thank you.

  • Newly installed ilife 6 - iphoto not recognized

    Hello all,
I was having problems with my iphoto 4 not uploading my pictures so decided to upgrade my ilife software to 6. Everything installed fine except for iPhoto, I click the icon to open and nothing happens and now the icon changed to the paper / letter A icon. I looked at the system requirements and I believe I'm okay. Anyone have any ideas or solutions for me?
    Much appreciated!

    rebknell
This looks like a faulty install.
Drag the iPhoto application from your Applications Folder to the trash
then go to HD/Library/Receipts and delete any pkg file with iPhoto in the name.
Then re-install iPhoto - you can do a custom install, you don't have to re-install all the other parts of iLife.
    Don't forget to repair permissions.

  • InDesign CS5.5 hangs on startup (Snow Leopard 10.6.8)

Newly installed CS5.5 from disc + online update. InDesign hangs shortly after startup.
Found some suggestions in this thread on CS5:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3116186
Fixed by deleting the SING datastore folder, as per Adobe support document, which doesn't yet say it applies to CS5.5.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408816.html
    Hope this helps someone.

InDesign CS5.5 currently crashes on launch when launching from the dock or the app direct, throwing up a crash report (http://pastebin.com/8dNiiSWu).
This crash is from opening a Flash file (SWF) inside the PMWelcomeScreen plugin. You can try moving Plug-Ins/PMPack/PMWelcomeScreen.InDesignPlugin out of the plugins folder, as a workaround only. You won't get the Welcome Screen, but that's perhaps a small price to pay. Not sure which flash file it is opening and failing on. Are you behind a firewall?
If launching from a document, InDesign launches, throws up a crash report, but you can still work on the document. Can still print/pdf but on closing another crash report is thrown up.
Sorry, this doesn't really make sense. If InDesign crashes, you cannot continue to work in it. Perhaps you are getting confused by previous crash reporter dialog windows that you have not dismissed or submitted so were still hanging around. Also, sometimes they take quite a while to pop up -- not always contemporaneous with the crash.

  • Firefox 31 hangs on startup with no error messages

Simply put, Firefox hangs right on startup. I see it loading the two generic tabs and then the wheel spins and then it says 'Not Responding' on the top of the window. I have to force close it each and every time, and I've also tried the following solutions in no particular order to alleviate the issue:
    1) Ran SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes last night for any possible infections. Reported back with nothing.
    2) Booted my laptop up in Safe Mode (with networking) and still couldn't get it to operate.
    3) Performed several clean uninstalls and re-installations which also included clearing out the profiles altogether and then trying to open it again, nothing.
    4) Booted up Firefox by holding down the shift key and resetted it to its default settings and then tried firing it up again. Nothing.
    5) Attempted booting up FF in Safe Mode with the shift key, nothing.
    6) Created a new profile and tried booting FF, nothing.
    7) Read this article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Hyper-Threading about Hyper-Threading and followed the instructions which got it to operate, but I can't access the toolbar or the option menus. When I click on options Firefox closes with no error messages. I have a feeling this isn't the issue at hand but I figure I'd try it and at least I can get it to fully load and not hang.
    8) Deleted all Firefox extensions and Plug-ins, nothing.
    9) Enabled Firefox through firewall and antivirus settings, nothing.
    10) Updated my BIOS firmware as suggested in #7, nothing.
I've done almost 10 different things and I still can't figure out why Firefox keeps hanging on startup. I've looked into Youtube videos for tutorials and others posted about the Java crashing that was happening in an earlier version of FF. Since its not crashing, I'm unable to look into the crash logs and pinpoint a crash number or anything because it just freezes and when I click to close it I get a message saying: 'Close program' or 'Wait for it to respond.'
I'm running a 64 bit Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion g6-1c44wm Notebook PC
Microprocessor 2.10 GHz Intel Pentium Processor B950
    Microprocessor Cache 2MB L3 Cache
    Memory 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (1 DIMM)
Memory Max Maximum supported = 8GB
    Video Graphics Intel HD Graphics
    Video Memory Up to 1696MB
    Hard Drive 500GB 5400RPM)
I'm trying to be specific as possible! Please help! I'm at the end of my rope here!

Try to completely uninstall firefox, that means to '''delete''' the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory#Windows Installation directory] located for your 64bit in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ , also, '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox and '''if exist''', '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.
then download and install again a new full installer from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
disable firewall and antivirus and antispyware for a little bit, and run firefox. any luck ?
    thank you

  • Firefox crashes for unknown reason lately, so I removed it and reinstalled it. How can I put my Favorites (bookmarks) back into the newly installed FireFox???

Firefox crashes a few times when I was on Facebook and with email, also watching dramas online. Most of the time due to Adobe Flash and I did submit crash report. Later it crashes for unknown reason while I have email and Facebook on different tabs -- when I was on the tab of email, it looks system hang and not responding. This happened to my laptop that uses Windows Vista as I noticed. I don't remember it ever happens to my desktop that uses Windows XP.
It's pretty annoying of such known crash, but before removing Firefox, I did try to update all add-ons or plugins and it looks like doesn't work out. After updating for couple times and it still crashed like that, I removed Firefox and reinstall it.
'''Now I want to know how to put the shortcuts from my Favorite folder into the newly installed FireFox's bookmarks.''' I didn't backup the bookmarks by using Firefox. I even went to Firefox help for instructions, but it only mentions how to merge/input the bookmarks from other browsers. Please note the version I've removed and inrestalled is the same -- 3.6.13.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • 10.7.4 Hanging at Startup

I don't often find the need for these forums, but I've got a tough one this time. Here's my issue:
I was recently using my late 2008 MBP (6 Gig RAM, 500 Gig HD) without issue as I have done for the last several years. The other night, I was running my DJ software (Traktor) which worked fine all night. I ended the night and shut the lid on my MBP, the next day, Traktor was still shutting down (as it does on occasion). I gave it a few minutes, but it seemed to have crashed so I force quit the program. Things seemed to be running slow so I restarted. When I did, my system hung on startup at the gray Apple screen with the spinning wheel. After many days and many, many troubleshooting routines, I'm STILL unable to make this go away permanently. Here's what I've tried:
(I've always been able to boot in Safe Boot mode, so that's how I've been doing maintenence)
Initially, I thought this was probably related to my DJ software so I uninstalled it (including manually uninstalling all extensions and preferences).
That didn't work so I started cleaning out my system (I haven't done a fresh install of OSX since like 2005, so it was probably time anyways). Still, no luck.
I reinstalled 10.7.4. Success, but only for the initial startup. A subsequent reboot and I'm back at the stalled startup.
Try removing more stuff from the system to no avail.
Wipe hard drive completely, reinstall OS X. WORKS!
So, I start migrating things back over from my backup (I used CCC instead of TM because I wasn't sure of the integrity of my TM backup). Things seem to be going OK.
Reinstall Messages beta and restart. NOOOOOO. Back hanging at same place.
I figure it has something to do with Messages, so I Uninstall the Messages beta. Still hanging at startup.
    Getting really frustrated now.
Time to try a blast from the past: Applejack. Yes, I know, it's not officially supported under 10.7, but low and behold, cleaning caches gets me back in business--but only for one reboot. Then I'm back at a stalled startup until I clean the caches again (and it's the system cache, not the user cache).
I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM and then immediately cleaning the system caches. That again gives me one good restart then back to the hanging startup. And, that's where I'm at now.
I'm absolutely stuck. I literally have not experienced this kind of issue in at least five years, so I could really use a hand on this one. The last log entry that I'm getting on the stalled startup is this:
    6/28/12 11:25:39.364 PM ntpd: proto: precision = 1.000 usec
Then it just hangs forever. The spinning progress wheel just freezes. I left it sitting overnight at that screen, so I'm 100% sure that it's not going anywhere.
I have a couple of theories on what the issues could be, but at this point, I'm totally open to suggestions. From what I can tell (from watching the logs over the course of several (seems like) hundred startups), it seems like this is about the point in the startup where iCloud is trying to check my user credentials. That said, I could be totally off base with that. Also, although the preceeding log entry seems to come after this on occasion, I'm NOT seeing this entry on any of the startups that hang:
6/28/12 11:25:38.000 PM kernel: NVDANV50HAL loaded and registered.
Seems to me that this could be an issue too since that's obviously associated with the graphics hardware.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Something you haven't mentioned is whether you have tried booting
from your clone and having the same issues.  Did you try that?
If it boots and works fine from the clone, then there could be
a corrupted file trying to be accessed at boot (possible bad sector)
on the internal drive or it could be that the drive is starting to
    give out.

  • How to move the photos from my boot drive to a newly installed hard drive?

    - regarding iPhoto's storage, etc.... Where is the iPhoto library located anyway? And - how to transfer it to the brand new hard drive?
I want to add a ned hard drive just to keep the media there, so I would like to transfer all the GBs worth of photos (the whole iPhoto library or - what folder, really?).
What do I need to do in order to accomplish this task?, and assuming that there is no problem moving all the photos (as I understand it would mean Originals, Modified & Data) - can I then just delete the original iPhoto Library (but from where?) somewhere on my boot drive?
Basically - I want to move all the photos from my boot drive to the newly installed hard drive, and after a successful move, I'd like to delete all the same photos from its original location (the boot drive).

One addition to Larry's steps: make sure the external drive is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and have it set to ignore ownership as seen here:
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
