Newly installed snow leopard 10.6.6 says startup disc is full - help please

A month ago, I installed snow leopard 10.6.6 to my MacBook Pro. Today, when I tried to do software updates, I got a message that says my start up disc is full and it can't install them.
My hardrive has only 856 mg remaining out of 249.72 capacity so it is, indeed, full!
I have deleted any and all files I no longer use and have moved others to an external hard drive.
I ran disc utility and the HD was verified as all okay
I restarted with shift key
I cleaned out my iMail boxes.
And, I cannot find anything on the internet about how to free up space on my start up disc.
What have I not done that I am missing? Oh, I also upgraded to iLife '11 at the same time. Is it possible that I have two sets of something that needs to be trashed because it is taking up an exorbitant amount of space?
Any help anyone can give me about clearing space on my start up disc would be most appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Glenn

Old Accounts would usually show up in the System Preferences/Accounts window. I don't know if you've ever done an Archive and Install, but it could leave some files from older installions on your drive.
Without knowing how many systems you've installed or upgraded from, it's hard to say what might have been left around on your system.
I'd run one of the programs and see if there are any large folder duplicates or anything else that might be laying around.
You haven't said how much space you expect to find... In other words, how large is your music library, photo library, documents folder, etc?

  • Newly installed Snow Leopard, iMac only shows Apple Logo

As I only have experienced problems with my new iMac I decided to newly install the OS (snow leopard 10.6). I did this and now I only get a white screen showing a black apple logo. Nothing happens.
I started again and pressed c - nothing, same outcome.
I started again and pressed d - also nothing.
    tried this many times.
Is there anybody who can help me? I am nearly at the point where I will send it back to Apple, very dissapointing machine... thank you very much for your help!

You should not be having these types of problems with a new iMac and doing a re-installation is almost always unnecessary. Because we don't have any information I'd recommend you make an appointment with your local Apple Store and take it in to be looked at. If you don't have an Apple Store close by then make an appointment with a local AASP.
You have 90 days of free telephone support, I'm not sure why you haven't contacted AppleCare as that would be the first thing to do when you have difficulty on a new machine. The phone number is in your owners manual.
BTW are you a recent switcher from MS Windows?

    Empty the Trash.
Copy files off the main hard drive onto another drive, or burn them to an optical disc if your computer can do that.

  • How to partition to install Snow Leopard and Lion on one computer

    My first posting:
My iMac came with Leopard. I upgraded to Lion, 3 months ago. I found out that Appleworks doesn't work anymore... very displeased because I always used Mac Strong points (for the past 30 years), which is drawing, like McDraw, McDraw 11, Clarisworks, Appleworks, etc. Apple could have have included a software in iworks to open the numerous works I have done over the years in drawing. Now iDVD doesn't come with Lion anymore. Another blow from Apple!! And iDVD  7.1.2 (after upgrade from Leopard's iDVD) doesn't work too well in Lion... quite a few things are wrong.
Consequently, I want to install Leopard in an external HD, where I could use Appleworks and iDVD.
I have a 1 tera WD Firewire as an external HD. I have tried a few ways to install Leopard on my external HD with no succes.
I have tried "partionning" the external HD, but when it came to  "Scan disc image" of Leopard, I had the message: Unable to scan "Install" (Resource busy)
I have tried to install with original Leopard DVD, but after pushing restart (to chose my external HD), then my computer keeps asking me to push restart.
Can anymore can tell me how to properly install Leopard on my external HD?
    MartinR says:
Connect your WD Firewire drive. Open Disk Utility and check to make sure that it is partitioned as GUID partition scheme (assuming you have an Intel iMac) and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  If not, you will need to repartition and reformat the drive - note that this will erase everything that is on the drive.
    Notes:
-If you have an Intel Mac you cannot install OS X to a drive that is partitioned as Apple Partition Map; it must be GUID Partition Scheme.
-Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the same as the "HFS+" as previously mentioned.
-For the disk to be bootable it must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) not plain Mac OS Extended.
Next, insert your Leopard install DVD in your iMac.  If the installer opens, just exit/close the installer window.  Do not remove the Leopard install DVD from the drive.
Shut down your Mac.  Then restart it by holding down the "C" key while it starts.  This will make your iMac start from the Leopard install disk that is in the CD/DVD drive.  You should then be able to select your external WD drive and install Leopard there.
My response to MartinR (I appreciate the dedication of the helpers)
I tried MartinR solution but it doesn't work. When I restart and keep "C" depressed, after a while, a kind of gray drape closes the screen and tells me I have to restart my computer par pressing "restart" for a few seconds. Then when the computer reboots, it tells me there was a problem and had to restart the computer with a report to Apple window.
I wonder if my computer is not defective? In 30 years, this is the only Apple computer that  broke down on me (Always been faitful to Apple computers in spite of the fact they had little apps then), and twice on top of that. The first repair  was done by Apple in Wellington Mall, Florida (hard drive had to be replaced); the second time was Northstar Computer in Sudbury, Ontario (optical drive had to replaced). Maybe that tells us something? Were replacement parts up to par? My computer seems to be working OK. I verified my HD with Disk Utility, and everything was OK.
My computer is an Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz and 4 GB of ram.
My WD external drive is formatted as GUID Partition Table, and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

    baltwo wrote:
Can't recall which I used to do the dynamic repartitioning.
I'm betting that it was originally Partitioned with Snow Leopard.
As a test I just added a second Partition with Mountain Lion to a FireWire HD and it would not let me Install Snow Leopard from my System or Retail Disc into the Partition.

  • Iphoto not working after installing snow leopard

My hardrive crashed while I was living in South America so I got the authorized mac dealership to put in a new one. Once I got back I was able to get all my photos and files from an external hardrive but I realized that my computer software was still 10.5.8. So I put in the Snow Leopard disk that I had bought because I realized that when they put in a new hardrive they didn't install Snow Leopard. After I installed Snow Leopard my iphoto now says "Caution The iPhoto Library folder is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." How do I fix this? I called Mac and because I bought the computer in 2007 I do not have any applecare so that will cost me $60 and the mac authorized dealership told me to call them or buy the new iLife in hopes that the problem will be fixed.

  • After installing Snow Leopard I can no longer "save photos on computer" after inserting a memory stick to an HP Photosmart C5180 All in 1                                                                                           Photosmart C5180 All in one

    Hello,
When I insert a memory stick into my HP Photosmart C5180 All in one and I try to "save photos on computer" the printer reads: "You need to install device software". This all started happening after I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac 10.6.8. Can someone please advise on what I need to do?

Typically it's a good idea to uninstall any devices attached to the Mac before doing an upgrade.  This prevents problems that can be caused by the upgrade.  Below are the instructions for uinstalling and reinstalling the printer.  I'm also going to include a link to the full feature software and drivers for the printer.  Let me know what happens.

  • Installing Snow Leopard on New Lion formatted macbook pro

I just purchased a new 15" macbook pro and it came with lion. I need to revert back to snow leopard for a couple of my programs because they aren't currently supported. When I try to boot from the snow leopard disc to add a partition to my hard drive, my laptop beats and will not boot.  I installed snow leopard on a different hard drive and swapped it out for the lion formatted one, same result when I try to start, it beeps. When I try to install snow leopard on an external drive I get this error "You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X. You have Install Mac OS X 23.1.1" Any ideas of how I can get snow leopard installed? Thanks!

Sure! A picture is worth a thousand words:
Start up the Target Mac (the one you want to install Snow Leopard on) while holding T. Plug it into another "Helper" Mac using a FireWire cable. Insert the Snow Leopard installer DVD into the Helper Mac, then restart and hold C.
Now you should be able to go through the Snow Leopard installer as normal, but make sure to choose the Target Mac volume as the install destination.
Immediately after installing, download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 combo updater on the Helper Mac and install it to the Target Mac while it's still connected via Firewire. Once that's done, restart the Target Mac on its own, and it should be ready to go!

  • How do I create more room on my MacBook Pro so I can install Snow Leopard?  It says it needs 5GB and I have 4.something.

How do I create more room on my MacBook Pro so I can install Snow Leopard?
I've only got 4.something GB left and it says it needs 5 GB?
Which then begs the question, will I be able to do anything with the computer.
I think I need to get some stuff off, but do not know where to look up what is taking up the most room.
I have an extra hard drive.
    I have iDisk.
I have a Time Machine, but it backs up one of my three Macs.
    Thanks.

  • My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard (via my MacBookPro), either from the HD or DVD drive.  Can't get it to run Hardware Test.  Disk Utility says disk OK - files are there. What can I do?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

You will lose the entire contents of your iDisk whether or not you migrate to MobileMe as there is no equivalent in iCloud and MobileMe will be terminated at the end of June. You will need to download any data which you don't have on your Mac already.
Snow Leopard is not compliant with iCloud and most of the facilities will not work. You can migrate from MobileMe to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard: when asked to confirm that your Mac is running Lion just lie and say 'yes'. Of course you won't be able to access iCloud directly from your Mac.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it.
This will be the situation with Snow Leopard when you have migrated:
Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).
There are a couple of third-party solutions which may be of interest.
BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion. A single user licence (two machines allowed) is $49.99.
Soho Organizer can sync Calendars and Contacts with iCloud on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. A single user licence (multiple machines allowed) is $99.99.

I installed Snow Leopard when it first came out but now my mac says it has os x 10.5.x.  Where did snow leopard go?

Hi, after a little more looking, I think your response might lead me to a solution.  It looks like the Snow Leopard install package is on my MacBook Pro hard drive but apparently something isn't right because I'm still running 10.5.  I found something called 10.6 Install Package or something like that and clicked on it.  It asked me where I wanted to install it and I said on the MacBook Pro hard drive in a new folder called Snow Leopard.  It told me the installation was successful.  I then restarted the computer but it is still using 10.5.  Any suggestions on what to do now?
