Newly RMA'd msi p45 platinum - does not boot

I had a p45 platinum motherboard RMA'd because it would was not turning on the power supply. MSI swapped the board out with another, which I received on  Friday. I installed the cpu (e5200) and the ram that I had when the other board stopped working.
with the  4 original sticks of ram from my previous build it seems to hang at the bios decompression stage (boot status LEDs)

While troubleshooting I switched down to one stick of ram, it seems to go through this sequence (some of the stages go by fast, but i'm pretty sure it goes through this sequence)

I have tried a stick of ram from another computer that I know works fine, but I always get stuck at the (second) memory detection test. Not sure why it even goes back to that stage. I there anything else I should test before sending it back msi? I don't have a spare 775 cpu, so I can' t change that out.

I have the R0 stepping SLB9T Intel specs
This is only speculation on my part, but it is possible the board you have received for the RMA was serviced & set away for shipping with a bios that was current at the time. It may not have 1.6 on it which might explain things.

Only suggestions here, but can you or a local shop possibly test that your CPU is indeed ok on another board? Does anyone you know, or a local shop have a known supported CPU that you can use for testing?
The Antec PSU you have only shows 17A on each of it's rails, the OCZ with 25A is the better choice.

power is connected to the 4pin cpu connector.
I was asking about the 4 pin power connector next to the PCI_E1 slot, but just to clarify about the CPU power connection, have you pulled the plastic cover off blocking 4 of the pins & using the full 8 pin power plug from the PSU?

  • P45 Platinum does not boot

I just got a net P45 Platinum and I can't get it to boot. All the LEDs are lit but I just get an empty screen. If it does try to start it gives me the safe mode screen but will not do anything when I try to enter it. The only way I have been able to get it going it to hit the magic Bios button in the back. Last time I built a machine was about 8 years ago so I am lost. Any help would be great.

Enter BIOS Setup after clearing CMOS, load "Optimized Defaults" and test the following settings in the Cell Menu:
    - FSB/DRAM Ratio = 1:1.2
    - DRAM Voltage = 1.95V [use the +/- keys of your keyboards numpad to change voltage values]
    - Spread Spectrum = Disabled
    See if that changes anything.
If it doesn't, test the same settings with only one memory module installed (try each module seperately).

  • MSI P45 Platinum will not power up...

    Hi ppl
I have just built a new PC with the following specs
    Motheboard: MSI P45 Platinum
    Processor: Intel Quad Core Q6600
Graphics: Asus ATi Radeon HD 3450 256MB PCI-E
    Ram: OCZ 2GB DDR2
    and
    x1 DVD R/W
I have put all the component together - but coming to power it up it does not power up at all....
although LED 3 (Which I've read is Power) lights up red? should this be green?
    I dont know
The power supply I am using is ...
    PC Power & Cooling SILENCER 500 EPS12V
which has been tested with a asus p45 deluxe mb and it all workS!
    all suggestions welcome ....
    Thank you so much

it up it does not power up at all....
Take the board out of the case to test it on a non-conducting surface in barebone configuration:
    - CPU (reseat CPU & heatsink)
    - one memory stick in first memory slot (try each stick seperately)
    - video card
    - keyboard
    - power connectors (24-Pin ATX, 4/8 Pin +12V CPU, 4-Pin PCIe MOLEX, 6/8-Pin +12V PCIe (video card)
    Do not connect:
    - hard drives
    - optical drives
    - case front panel connectors for reset, power-on, LED, USB, Firewire etc.
Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU after hardware changes and then try to start the system using one of the following methods (test each):
    1) use the red onboard power-on button
    2) short the two pins that the power-on button of your case usually connects to with a screwdriver

  • K7N2 Platinum does not boot

I have a K7N2 Platinum with an Athlon XP-M 2500+ (overclocked to ~3200+). I recently bought some new ram (2 x http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/65719). I fitted it, turned the machine back on and was presented with a blank screen. I've tried removing the new ram and fitting the old but to no avail, there were previously 3 x 256 mb chips. I've tried them together and individually. I've also tried refitting the processor (and thermal paste) as well as removing the graphics card, SATAs, PATA and DVD Drive.
Conversely I have NOT reset the CMOS, I didn't want to try that because I have no idea whether it would help and didn't really want to make the problem worse.
The D-Bracket 2 shows 1-Green 2,3,4-Red and the various drives connected to spin up but nothing appears on screen.
Anyone have any ideas, any assistance would be much appreciated.

When you powered it up without any ram did you get any beeps?
Look at the caps on your MB for any that are swelled, popped or leaking.
Look at the MB P/S connector and look for if any burnt resistors or caps on the MB and get your nose close to it and smeel for any burns.
If all looks well then disconnect all cables (power & data) from the MB, all you want connected at this time is the case speaker, cpu+fan, 1 stick of ram (try different ram and slots) and graphic card, remove all add-on cards, USB devices, serial anything and everything including the KB and mouse, everything but what I mentioned above. Now, pull the P/S cord and push youe case start button to drain any charge off the MB and components then clear your cmos, plug the power cord back in and try to boot now.
If it does not boot then pull the ram and try to boot, here you should get a continous sting of beebs which would indicate that the BIOS was OK.
If you did not get any beeps then it could be your P/S, CPU, MB or even the cmos itself.
You can take your CPU to any PC shop and get it tested usally for free if you shop there alot. If you have a DVM then you could check your P/S yourself or try a friends P/S to test that piece, as for the MB, cmos you could have a shop test them but most will charge for this and could cost almost as much as getting a new MB.

  • K9N SLI Platinum does not boot

    Hi
suddenly my computer does not boot -after a short 10 days of use. I just have a blank screen.
The D-bracket shows 2 green on top and 2 red on bottom, which according to the manual means "decompressing BIOS image to RAM for fast booting". There it hangs.
I unplugged all drives and memory and I flash the CMOS as shown in manual p2-20. No result.
    Any suggestion?

    First, thanks for helping.
I tried different combination of RAM positioning using DIMM1 and DIMM3, but with no result (as I read the manual, it says DIMM1 needs to be used first, and then DIMM3). I also tried DIMM3 alone (the slot near the CPU).
I also disconnected the power cord to flash the CMOS. No change there.
I don't have any other card in the system, just the video card on the lower PCI Express slot (farther from the CPU).
I might add that I did not update the BIOS with the latest version. I left it as it was when I bought the board. This BIOS version was not able to recognize the CPU and it displayed an error message at POST. The OS was dealing with it properly and all seemed to work fine.
The problem started after a cold reboot if I remember.

  • MSI x48c platinum - does not detect SATA HDDs

I am having some problems with a pc build with motherboard not detecting SATA HDDs (MIS x48c Platinum).
I believe I have exhausted all other avenues, and I would appreciate some help if I have missed something obvious.
(details of other components are listed at end of mail).
When I built pc using these components, and went into BIOS settings, the SATA HDD's were not detected.  I tried changing BIOS settings, but no difference if SATA, AHCI, or IDE settings.
I removed the HDDs and successfully tested them in another machine (also formatted them while had them istalled in other pc).
IDE optial drives are detected.  I have tried to boot with these disconnected to ensure no isues with both IDE and SATA drives connected, but this did not resolve issues.
I have also tried connecting HDD to different onboard SATA ports, and connecting just one drive with no success.
Resetting BIOS defaults, and using clear CMOS reset did not resolve issues either.
Sometimes on boot, it takes a few attempts to boot correctly, and on these occassions I receive an error message "Warning !!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed, and the system is restored to the default settings, Press any key except "DEL" to enter setup ......."  I haven't tried to set any over clocking.
I read about a number of issues on MSI forum related to SATA drives which were resolved by BIOS upgrade (mobo was shipped with v.7.0 released 20 March 08).  I managed to install an old IDE HDD and flash BIOS, but still no resolution of issues detecting SATA drives (BIOS V.7.2 released 29 July 08).
I've tried everything I can think of at this stage.  Is there anything else I should try, or is there something wrong with this motherboard?
    Spec:
    Motherboard:
    343949 MSI X48C Platinum, X48, Socket-775,
    DDR2/DDR3, ATX, GbLAN, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x1
    Other components in build:
CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Graphics Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB
    HDD 2 x Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB
    RAM 4GB (2x2GB) GeIL DDR3 1333MHz Value Dual Channel (7-7-7-24) PC3-10660
PSU 700W X-Power ATX SLI PSU
ODD DVD & CDR drives from an old pc - IDE connections.

i just remember     i had once similar problem with a sata driver. the issue is this you can not adjust everything in bios in one go and expect mobo to know about it. what i mean is this for instance you disable the raid then you save it and exit and then when it reboot you go back to bios and reset another another parameter,  you save and exit and on reboot you go back to bios and reset another parameter. i got round the prob that way and it worked and mobo saw the sata HDD. give this a shoot good luck and finally make sure raid is disabled
this is what i would do
1- make sure the jumper setting on your IDE Hdd is correct (Y may have to try this twice as there are two different setting on jumper setting for Master)
    2- connect the sata HDD
    3-click on power
4-go to bios and disable raid save exit
5-on reboot go back to bios
6--on first option click on it then you should see all devices that can be seen by mobo if you do not see sata HDD you have to click on enable for the auto to see the device once it sees the device save and exit. REMEMBER THE JUMPER SETTING  ON IDE HDD CAN CAUSE PROB . SO try the other jumper setting for master, repeat this procedure once more hopefully you get it right

  • MSI x48c platinum does not recognize 2 PCIe boards

    Hello,
I had the same recycling boot problem as others have noted.
It occured with the Antec Phantom 500 power supply and the Antec Signature 850.
Swtiched to a Cool Master Pro 650 and no more recyling boots.
However, I have 2 PCIe cards that this system board does not recognize in the POST (quick boot disabled) and no new hardware is found under win XP.
    Boards are:
Black Magic Design Intensity (HDMI board)
    http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/techspecs/
United Audio UAD-2 Quad (audio DSP)
    http://www.uaudio.com/products/uad/uad2neve128/index.html
Does not matter if they are together, alone or which PCIe slot.
These bpards are needed for my work.
anybody else have baords that the x48c can't see?
These same boards are fine with other motherboards.

  • P45 Platinum will not boot Server 2008 with 2x2GB...

I was working through the night last night to get my new rig built and installed with the new SP2 of Server 2008 and was having problems that seem to point to the mobo not liking the optimized settings for my 2x2GB.  Hopefully my signature has all the system specs necessary - but do ask if I've left anything out.
    What I did:
    - Built system with minimal HW:
         CPU & cooler, PSU, 2x2GB (slots 1 & 3), GeForce 8600, 2x250GB SATA2 HDs (ports 7 & 8 for JMicron) , 1xSATA2 DVD-RW
    - Got POST and configured BIOS:
         Load optimized defaults, reset time.
    - Added Rest of HW, got POST and configured RAID:
         - Integrated Peripherals - RAID Mode:  RAID
         - Integrated Peripherals - On-Chip ATA Devices - RAID Mode:  IDE
         - Save &  Exit
         - CTRL-J:  Built 2x250GB JMicron RAID
    - Boot to Server 2008 install DVD
         - Loaded RAID driver and installed to RAID
         - Installation continued (at a wonderfully fast pace), until it hung about 90% through
    - Tried re-installing several times, trying things like reconfiguring RAID, using different drivers, etc.
    - Then I removed the 2nd RAM in DIMM 3, and re-install completed without a hitch.
    - Booted from RAID, configured Server 2008.
    - Installed drivers for Intel P45 Chipset, GeForce 8600, Ethernet, and Audio
    - Retried having 2 x 2GB in DIMM 1 & 3, and reboot hung during Server 2008 loading bar
         - Tried DIMM in 2 & 4 with same results.  Again, system POSTs with no problem, seeing all 4GB.  But OS hangs on load.
    - Ran MemTest on each RAM separately, with no problems after an hour each.
    - Put the 1 RAM back in DIMM 1 and used LiveUpdate to successfully Flash BIOS from v1.2 to v1.6
    - Reconfigured BIOS (optimized defaults and JMicron RAID)
    - Rebooted to Server 2008 successfully with only 1 RAM in DIMM 1
         - Tried DIMM in 1 & 3 and 2 & 4, and again hung on OS load.
    - With only 1 RAM installed, the OS flies.  I did lots of application and utility experimentation to ensure all was functional and stable.   Even Defraged the RAID, so I'm pretty sure no HDD problem.
Based on all the forum posts I've read, I'm not sure about why it POSTS but doesn't load the OS, but I bet it has something to do with the mobo being unstable with the default settings for this RAM.  Seems too bad as I tried to pick a decent RAM for future OC potential.
Out of fairness, I should point out that I have not yet tried blowing away the OS and reinstalling with my only other option - XP Pro SP3 - and seeing how that fairs.  My guess is that it too will be unstable.
Fortunately, I'm still having fun tinkering - so no real frustration to speak of.  But any advice on what to do next would be much appreciated...

Finally, in response to RemusM's request, here's the CPU-Z info for Memory, SPD and CPU using the Optimized Default BIOS settings and 1x2GB in DIMM 1:
Then, I spent a late night last night browsing the forums and searching the web.  I found a dude with the same mobo, memory and an E8400.  He was having similar problems and listed some recommended BIOS Cell settings.  I put in my 2x2GB, removed the HW OC FSB jumpers on the mobo and entered the following settings into BIOS Cell and gave it a try:
    Multi-Step OC Booster:  Mode1
    DOT Control:   Disabled
    Intel EIST:  Enabled
    Intel C-STATE Tech:  Disabled
    Adjust CPU FSB Freq:  400
    Advancd DRAM Config:  (all Auto)
    Enhance Settings:  Auto
    NB Drive Configure:  Auto
    FSB/DRAM Ratio:  1:1.00  (1333:667)
    Clock Gen Tuner:  (all Auto)
    Adj PCI Freq:  Default
    Auto Disable DRAM/PCI Freq:  Enabled
CPU Voltage - ICH Voltage:  (all Auto)
    Spread Spectrum:  Disabled
Not only did now my system now boot successfully into the OS for the first time with 2x2GB installed, but it seemed stable through my OS config and application installs.  What's more, for the cost of taking the DRAM down to 800MHz, I now had the CPU at 3.8GHz!
    Here's the new CPU-Z results:
    What's next:
    - I need to further test stability by downloading and running some decent benchmarks of some type
    - I'd love to get some advice on how I could further tune the above settings for increased stability and even better performance, as the memory and CPU seem capable of more if the mobo is...
Thank you for the input and attention so far.  Please keep it coming...

  • Re: P45 Platinum will not boot Server 2008 with 2x2GB... -l- split

Can I ask how one would go about setting a CAS Latency of 7 or 8 on the Platinum p45?
    I have the same crucial PC2-8500 and BIOS 1.6. I'm happily running the RAM @ 500MHz, 6, 7, 7, 24 (I think!) and FSB 375.
I would love to go further but can't set the CAS Lat' higher than 6 (options run 'Auto' through '6').
I understand PC2-8500 isn't supported by p45 but having read the last post here wondered if it SHOULD be possible to reach this RAM's full potential on the Platinum p45 with such timings 7, 7, 7, 20 or 7, 8, 8, 25 etc??
I have read on this forum that some have had RAM issues with BIOS 1.6 and I will try the 1.7D beta BIOS.
However any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    D.

Sorry Henry - I thought it was quite on topic.
    This particular RAM default @ 1067  7, 8, 8, 24.
So when 'Optimized defaults' are loaded the Platinum p45 sets timings of 6,8,8,24 @1067 and thus the system wont boot (The origin of the Server 2008 boot problem no?!)!
The last post in that thread indicates that a CAS Lat' of 7 or 8 could be used.
The question is can a CAS Lat of 7 or 8 be set on the Platinum P45 or is this post simply saying "it could be. On another motherboard"?
    Cheers
    D

  • MSI TV@nywhere does not boot

    Hello,
I just got a TV@nywhere master tv-card. When I put it in my pc with a Abit BE6 motherboard I won't boot anymore. I don't get any image on my screen. I disconnected all harddrives, other pci cards and I used an other vga card (agp and pci) but still the same. I have the latest BIOS and reset the the BIOS but nothing works.
The card works in other computers so that isn't the problem. Does anyone know what to do?
    Bart

Check if anything else might have happened to come loose or becoming just slightly pushed out of its ideal position, like a RAM module or the motherboard itself.

  • News - BIG PROBLEM - MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - DOES NOT POWER!!!

    Hi to everyone.
I'm a proudly owner of a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that in one year gave me no problem until yesterday morning.
I used the computer in the night before and when I finished I turned it off and I went to bed.
Yesterday morning I found the power led blinking (like if the system was in standby), and there was no way to turn the PC on.
I even took off the battery for more than 12 hours and I left only minimal components installed:
the video card (Gainward GeForce 6800),
    the psu (Antec TruePower 550W),
    1 x 512 MB Ram Crucial Ballistix,
and I checked them into another computer and they work perfectly.
I tried shorting the MB power switch pins with a screwdriver and I've even tried to power on the system without the Memory or the Video Card... I've tried everything that came across my mind with no efforts!!!!
Every time I give power to the MB appens only that the power led starts blinking, but pressing the button the PC doesn't turn on.
PLEASE HELP ME... I really don't know what else to do!!!
    Thanks,
    Alberto

    Hi thanks for the answers.
I do have a D-Bracket, but my problem is not that the system does not boot or does not post... my system DOES NOT POWER ON (!!!!), so d-bracket is useless!
When I plug the system power    the only thing that happens is that the power led starts blinking (with the system still in soft-off), and if I press the power switch button nothing happens!
I've the bios for 7025 v1.8 and the settings where for OFF on power-loss ond pressing the button (can't rememeber if it was more than 4 sec) was meant to turn off the computer, but considering that I un-powered the pc more than once without the MB battery the settings should be factory default by now.
I went through the Windows-XP shut-down system, and i could not be an electrical problem as I always used the PC with a pretty good UPS unit.
Right now these are the full specs of my sytem:
    - MB MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra
    - GAINWARD 6800 2600 GLH 256 MB Ram
    - PSU Antec TruPower 550 W
    - CPU AMD64 3500+ core Winchester @11*210 Mhz (this cpu has never overclocked very well)
    - HEATSINK Thermalright XP-90 with a 12 Cm Enermax Fan (CPU temp in always below 55 °C when stressed)
    - 1 x 512 Mb RAM Crucial Ballistix DDR400 optimized for  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
I left only these things inside my computer in the hope that it would turn on... it did not work. I tested each component but the MB, and they work perfectly.
    Again...
Thanks for you efforts, any help will be appreciated.
    Alberto.
All parts have been tested: CPU/RAM/GFX/PSU/HD/DVD,  just not the MOBO ?
Checked if the MOBO is shorting in the case ?
Have you tried using the reset switch as power, on/off switch ?  I've seen before when the power switch stops working (lose/bad wire busted spring) after swapping  reset to power, then the system turned on. Worth a try, as sending it back to USA won't be cheap. If its over 1 year old it mite not be covered by the re-seller and or MSI. Best to check this out as law and warranty is different from country to country.
    Good Luck

  • MSI P45 Platinum and RAID 0!

System specs below! First of all this system is basically a gaming rig. I am running Vista 64 on one single Western digital hard drive, and using an identical drive for storage. I was thinking about setting up a RAID 0 array with these two drives. Can this be easily done with this mobo? I am just wondering if there are any quirks associated with the MSI P45 Platinum mobo that would make this a pain to set up. Anyone else running a RAID 0 with this mobo and having good results? Would it even be worth it?
I was told my several different people in the gaming community, that RAID 0 really speeds up map loading, which would be great. I would be backing up the array to another internal drive using True Image.
    Any advice would be great!!

Only, if you set the controller to AHCI Mode (which would not really be a problem either).  You probably won't need any additional drivers when the controller is working in IDE Mode.
If you have to install drivers, use the latest ones from the JMicron FTP Download Server:
    ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/jmb36x/Win2k_xp_Vista/
Ok, well I won't have my new storage drive until Thursday. I will run HD tune on the drive connected to both different controllers and see what is the fastest.
I know we talked about this just a little. Still wondering about the RAID drives, or any drives attached to the ICH10R's SATA connections when it is set to RAID in the bios. The drives, including my SATA CD/RW drive does not show under "Standard CMOS features". Just #7 and #8 of the JMicron's show since they are still set to IDE in the bios.
    You commented with:
"They are now Controlled by the ICH10R Firmware.  Look here":
--> Integrated Peripherals --> On-Chip ATA Devices --> AHCI Devices Group
    --> Integrated Peripherals --> On-Chip ATA Devices -->
Those locations are just where you set the RAID mode. There's no actual drives listed there. I do see a screen popup when booting my system with the two RAID drives saying "ok" and bootable. Plus I see them in the Matrix storage console. Is this normal then?  There really is no place when you search through the bios that you can see them listed??  I can hit the Ctrl and I keys and go into the actual RAID bios, but I don't see my RAID drives listed in the actual bios.
Am I explaining this right??  Just wanting to make sure everything is working right.  It sure seems to work well with bench marks. Here's a shot of my array with HD tune.  I'm thinking that burst rate can't be right.

  • Q6600 & MSI P45 Platinum...

    hi guys,
    my pc specs...

MB  - MSI P45 Platinum with Zalman Cooler BIOS V 1.5

currently i'm running @ 266*9 = 2.4Ghz n my fsb/dram ratio is 1:2. the thing is wen i set my FSB to 400 , fsb/dram ratio is changed to get 1064Mhz for my rams thou, (CPU stil runs @ 400*6=2.4Ghz), i c my NBB Voltage is marked in RED color in d core center software.
the thing is i'm not sure wat is d safe voltage to set it in BIOS to as i'm afraid i might fry d board. PC parts over here are freakin expensive. All settings in BIOS is set to AUTO as i didn't OC my Q6600. Except my ram timings in BIOS is set to 5-5-5-15 (others all auto). so guys, please help me out here. i'm sorry if tis question is lame or a repeat post. i've been checkin around for months but just cant seem to get an asnwer. once again, thanks for all d help guys...

If all voltages are set to auto and everything's running without an issue you don't need to change any voltage setting because the auto settings are safe. Forget about core center software as it is quite crappy. What does your HW monitor in bios report for nbb voltage?

  • Problem with MSI P45 Platinum DDR2 mainboard and Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D Ram

Hi, I have encountered with a problem.
    First I had
    MSI p45 platinum ddr2 bios ver. 1,4
    Intel E8400
    Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D 2x1Gb
2 Asus ATI EAH 3870 Crossfire
and it was running with windows XP without any problems.
Problems began when I decided to upgrade to 6Gb of ram and to install Vista 64. Ram modules witch I bought are the same Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D, but 2x2GB.
When i put them together adjust voltage 2.1v and timing 5-5-5-15 they fail mem test with huge amount of errors.
when I test only 2x2gb modules memtest sometimes doesn't open at all, sometimes just stops working on 8 minutes of test. couple of times they completed memtest without any errors.
Can someone advice what should I do and what could the problem?
    Thank you for your answers.

    1) the modules are not the same (the DDR2 chips are different)
    2) as general rule, mixing 2x1GB with 2x2GB is a bad idea.
