News page on iweb..

Hi,
I have just recently started using iweb and i wish to use it to help a friend create a small website where he needs to have some sort of news feed on the front page.
I have had a look around but i have yet to find any way or widgets that let you create a news page..
I must point out that my friend does not have access to a mac at this moment so he will hope to run his 'site' from windows tho i figure the only thing he would wish to do is post news.. otherwise anything else will be updated by me using iweb.
My friend currently posts 'news' from a blog so i first tried to set up an RSS feed as the news page but i don't think that is the best way to set up a news page.
Also a big problem is, say he has a hidden blog where he posts his news and people see it on the main page via the RSS feed, well the RSS feed links to the original blog which would be pointless and seem less professional.
Also, if there is a way to post news is it possible my friend could be able to post it from the website using his web browser and not having to do it via iweb?
Hopefully there is a solution & i appreciate anyone who can help!

I did look into using the built in blog feature as a 'news' page but it seems if i use hosting other than mobile me people cannot comment each blog post which is important to me.
Comments on hosts other than MobileMe can be done via services like Haloscan. But only someone with a Mac and iWeb can make entries in an iWeb blog, so I'm not sure what the point would be.
You might want to consider just using an iframe to put the current blog into an iweb page.

Also, just realized I can still duplicate pages (once modified, they resulted in the new needed pages), so iWeb is not completely useless yet…

Publishing new pages on IWEB

I have created a website and its all worked fine and I have published it to the web. However, when I added new pages and deleted a page in IWEB and went to re-publish the site, the new pages haven't published.
Does anyone know how to get the new added pages published onto the live site?

First, after you upload changes to your site make sure you empty the browser cache before visiting the site.
If you have done this then the question is - where are you publishing your website and how are you uploading the files - iWeb FTP or another FTP application?

Creating new pages in iWeb

Could someone assist please with creating new pages within a page - that is if I need to follow from
a previous page with in context stuff, but I don't want a NEW page with a NEW page heading at the top.
I just want to put more stuff up under an existing page heading and using an arrow to go to new page
all in the same section. Rather than filling the top with new page headings. Sorry if I cant explain it better! Thanks - Gareth

This works for your site because it is mostly photos and you have used the Photo Page, fine. However, what you need to remember is that many people just have ordinary websites without photos who might still want to use sub pages and this method will not work for them because there are not forward and back links.
I have sub pages on my own website and basically, I created an About Us page. I have some text there, but then I have something that says find out more about these people. I did not want these other pages displayed in the main nav bar, so I took them all out and what I have done on the About Us page is use a shape with the name of the person in it and created a hyperlink to that page. You click on the relevant shape and this takes you to the page for that person - on this page I have then created a shape with Back and Forward in it - the Back hyperlink if clicked on takes you back to the About Us page and the Forward hyperlink takes you to the page for the next person etc.
If you want to create sub pages on an ordinary web site, then this is how you need to do it - you need the links on the pages that are not in the main nav bar to be able to get around the site.
You don't have those links on your site, but as it is mainly photos then this does not matter and works for you, as you go from gallery to gallery. This will not work for everyone though - horses for courses! What works for one might not work for another.

How to create a new page as a hyperlink to an external one?

I've been trying to solve this for like 2 hours and still haven't found the way!
When you create a new page in iWeb, it automatically adds its name into the navbar and creates a new page and folder with its content. Well, I want to create a new page that is a link to an outside webpage opening in a new tab. How do i do this? Editing the new page .html? I've tried that, but what should I write?

Making a link to a new page without it appearing at the top...

Hi guys,
I have what appears to be a simple question, but have not been able to locate it on the boards.
I have a page in which I'd like to have several links to new pages I've created. However, I would NOT like those new pages to appear as quick links at the top of my web page. Is this possible? Every time I create a new page in iWeb, it adds that page as a link at the top of my Website. I want new pages without those links at the top...

Adding a "downloads" Page to iWeb?

I'm a middle school teacher who currently has an online website through .Mac homepage. I'm ready to switch everything over to iWeb.
What I really need is a page that allows parents & students to download homework assignments I post on a regular basis. This is covered through my homepage now...but what do I do about it with iWeb?
IF this is not possible, could some Apple guru please tell me how I can use my start page in .Mac to link to my new pages in iWeb?

Well, it's been a week since I started playing with iWeb, and being able to compare it to my up-and-running .Mac homepage.
My site on .Mac was put up as an extension of my classroom. Since most are familiar with (and have probably bookmarked) my original site, I won't get rid of it all together this school year.
I have messed around with iWeb where I finally published a new site, have worked on 'classroom' blogs, and recorded 2 podcasts with GarageBand 3! And yes, I think I'll definately throw a link on the new site to get them to the old site.
F.Y.I. I don't want parents or students to download everything in my public folder, so I will keep the present format I have, where you go in and decide what visitors can see.
I imagine that Apple will eventually discontinue the homepage sites down the road. I also see them coming out with a update to fix any common 'issues' that people have had.... I personally hope they come out with more choices for templates as well.
Hey, it's all good when it comes to Apple and their suite of programs. They still kick some major technological butt over that Windows OS!

IWeb • How Do I Make Links in an Embedded PDF Document Open in New Page?

On this page http://ostyn-newman.com/Gov_Downloads.html I have a PDF document that is embedded. I tried an IFrame, but everything seemed to work better for me with the "Embed" code. I am open to changing this if it would be better. Here's my problem. I can get the PDF document to display fine, but when I click on the links in the PDF document, the destination page opens in the embedded window. I want the links to open the destination in a new window.
I created the part of the document with most of the links (Pages 8.5 - 56) in Numbers and cut and pasted the table into a Pages document to create the completed document on our site. I exported the docuemnt from Pages as a PDF file which is what you see. There is also a link to download the file on the same page which works just fine.
I have tried to insert the target="_blank" code but have not been able to get it to open the destination pages in a new window. I am inserting the code by using the Insert/Widget/HTML Snippet Feature in IWeb. Here is the code I am using.

I am not a coder and have just used Google to find the code to cut and paste and have played around with it to get to the place I am. If anybody can tweak the code I have or offer some totally new code for me to insert that will get this to work would be greatly appreciated.
Please keep in mind that most of the people who visit and use this page are government employees and are almost exclusivey using Explorer.

It is live on my site. You can see that the embedded document still opens the destination links in the embedded window.
As for your other two suggestions, thank you as well. I am aware of those techniques and did not use them because that is not how I want the other PDF links on the page to behave. The catalog and autocad blocks downloads in the box at the top should simply download (or behave however the client's browser is configured to handle downloaded PDF documents or zip files.) I don't intend to force those to open a new window. I could also have our client click on a link to the PDF document and open it in a new page (like in your second suggestion) but I was hoping to embed the PDF and have it automatically viewable on our Download • Terms • Prices Page with all of the PDF search functions intact as well as the links be active. My only complaint at this point is that the links in the embedded PDF document open the destination page in the embed window instead of a new window. I only want to force a new window because the destination window doesn't behave properly when it opens in my embed window and it is difficult to figure out how to go back to the my PDF document when a destination window gets opened in the embed window. The code you sent didn't do the trick. Or maybe I didn't get it exactly right. That is why I included it above. Thanks for trying though. I appreciate the effort.
I would be willing to bypass the imbed/iFrame route altogether if I could just somehow drop the Pages document into the IWeb page and retain the search and link features, but I've not been able to figure out how to do that. When I was exploring how to directly drop a Pages document into an IWeb page is when I stumbled on the method of embedding a PDF document into an IWeb page to retain the important search and link features.

I add pictures to existing web page using iweb(3.0.1) and new pictures show in all browsers EXCEPT firefox. Previous patches seem only good for iweb 2.X

Do you see any error messages about getElementsByClassName in the Tools > Error Console ?
That was the problem with content generated with an older version of iWeb.
Content that has been generated with such an older version needs to be regenerated with that never version and uploaded to the web server.
Never versions of iWeb should cause any problems.

Open iPhoto, select a couple of photos and use the Share ➙ iWeb ➙ Photo page menu option. That has jump started iWeb for others. I could take a couple of tries.
If that doesn't work try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iiWeb.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder.

Cannot create new pages/sites in iWeb '08

I know this has been brought up so many times before. I read ALL of the posts.
I am unable to create any new pages or sites in iWeb'08. The plus sign is greyed out and command-N does nothing.
Here's what I've done:
Deleted all files associated with iWeb and re-installed from the original DVD.
Tried using the iWeb icon in iPhoto and iMovie (total of 20 times each). Nothing happens. The photos do not show up in iPhoto and I still can't do anything.
Can anyone please suggest something else to try. I have an existing website that I prefer to use iWeb for, but I cannot update it until I can use iWeb.
I can't believe Apple would release something this bad.

IWeb "open new page in browser" doesn't work?

On websites I have created in iWeb, the hyperlinks to a web page will not open in a new window even though I have checked that setting in the Inspector. Previously when creating websites with html I would simply add the "blank target" code but in iWeb there is no way to edit html directly. I have tried this with Safari and with Firefox, it doesn't work!

Thanks for those helpful suggestions, though I have batted around different ways of trying to get iWeb to register the "open in new window" when checked, to no avail so far, and it doesn't work with any link, whether in text or combined with an image. Taking all these points:
I have now managed to open the html using TextWrangler but I must admit it is a little beyond me to even find the string of code in question as iWeb uses so many files. It would be better if I could just get iWeb to do the work for me as it's meant to.
Strangely, when I open the website in iWeb the first time, all the pages to the left are marked in red before I've done anything! So I cannot use that as a simple check to see if a change has been made. Also I have already tried making other changes after checking the "open in new window" box before saving.
I always publish to a folder on my HD, as I am uploading to a server that is not me.com or mac.com. (Could that be the trouble? iWeb seems to generally be very unfriendly to publishing on other servers than Apple and I have had to jump through a lot of hoops with various things.)
Could it be the weird folder hierarchy created by iWeb, where there is an index.html page outside of the main folder where all the stuff is kept? So far, I have just uploaded it to the server "as is", so the contents of the main folder (which has another index.html rather strangely placed outside it) are not at the root level on the server. The folder containing them is at the root level and so is the "external" index.html. Would it work if I uploaded only the contents of the folder to the root directory on the server, and not in the folder that iWeb creates or with its "dummy" index.html outside it?
(I think in the past this has caused trouble with Google search sitemaps, and is the reason why in the end I uploaded the whole thing and not just the contents of the main folder.)
So to be clear (not that easy here), the files on the server are:
Directory > index.html plus the folder containing all the website files. So the actual website files are at a second level in a folder, not at the root level.
The easiest example where the blank target doesn't work is on the home page of one of my websites. Scroll down and there is an image of a book which has a link to a bookstore. This should open a new page in the browser, but never does. (Annoyingly, in FireFox it even kills the back button, Safari works slightly better in that respect.)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. In iPhoto create an album, select it and click on the iWeb button in the bottom tool bar. That will send the photos in the album to a photo page in iWeb. It may take several tried before the menus in iWeb are activated.

Opening iWeb--problem selecting "New Page"

I opened iWeb for the first time, but almost all the options are in grey (meaning I can't select them). What do I need to do to get started? I can't even select "New Page" under the File menu.
